I’ve been talking to the owner of Kanis glass eyes via email. I shared an owner picture to show how much I like their eyes and told them they need better photos for the website and they added mine ahaha. My doll feels like a little model!

I put in an order for more as I only have this pair and I’m curious about how the other colors look irl! The website photos don’t do them justice!!

The craftsmanship used to make these is pretty identical to how glass eye human prosthesis are made, minus the shaping that occurs at the very end to fit the clients eye socket/implant!

The eyes are hallow compared to other bjd eyes and the doming is very gradual and smooth. Resin eyes are very popular but these have a glow to them I just can’t describe even the white part. Just get a lil eye shine going with your lighting on them and you’re golden!

Hello. Stumbled upon your blig when i'm researching body for my oxmo head by dollfc (instagram)/chaofan. Especially interested in 4th gen guard love. Have you receive yours yet? Seeing you have so many yosd body would love to seen nude photo of them and posing review would be great too. And i guess you can read chinese as you know a lot of chinese artist. Could you please give some pointer on how to find them? As taobao is confusing to tell from recaster or not. Thx i enjoy your blog.

Hello and thank you for the message!  I wish I knew what head oxmo is, I don’t have Instagram and couldn’t find it when I searched.  

4th gen Guardlove body - I haven’t received mine, and probably won’t for a few months, as the pre-order just ended.  (So it’s probably not a good choice if you need a body soon…) I’ve been relying on photos and reviews from collectors on Weibo who received samples from the company.  Here are some photos and reviews: One, two, three, four, video by the sculptor.  

I’ve been planning to do nude comparisons of my Yo-SD-sized bodies, but there’s always more bodies on their way in… XD;; I’m waiting for Guardlove, 2D Doll and Akagidoll at the moment.  All the comparisons or posing reviews I have at the moment are a Yo-SD/ Pettimal/ ASAI comparison and a Pettimal review.  I also linked two Chinese sources for multiple body comparisons here and here.

Even Chinese people get tricked into buying recasts on Taobao, so yes, it can be hard to tell.  Tips:

Avoid the stores of  notorious recasters such as username “luoligui” (I believe this is the infamous recaster who tried to trademark many Korean doll companies’ name as his own in China) (shop name changed to “shuga fairy” but username is the same), 园梦天使, 萌精灵娃屋.

Avoid the stores that appear in the right-hand column on the BJD search results pages.  These are stores that pay to be promoted in the search results, and as far as I can tell most of them are recasters.

If sculpts are freely offered which you know were limited edition, or skintones are freely offered which were limited edition or never released by the original sculptor/ company, or sculpts which were only released as heads/ without bodies are sold as full dolls (e.g. Napidoll Carol)  - it’s probably a recaster.  

Finally, if it’s too cheap to be true compared to other official Chinese companies’ or dealers’ sites on Taobao, or the RMB equivalent of the original overseas artist’s price, it’s probably a recaster.  (This is not a recommendation to buy from them, but dolk.taobao.com is an authorised retailer of many brands - you may compare prices with them.)

【Napidoll Kuri】

So, Napidoll has finally released a new YoSD head ‘Kuri’, after the success of their previous releases ‘Carol’ and ‘Maroon’.

The sculpt is very adorable, especially with those chubby cheeks and eye bags. He was sculpted and painted by one of Napi’s artists, Ire (she also painted Napi’s Carol).

I ordered Kuri with the company’s faceup cause I think it’s too cute! He comes with long light lashes and freckles.

I still need to find him a wig and a body. But it’s gonna take a while since I currently have other plans for other dolls.

For now options for 1/3 size jointed bodies are very slim. Right now there's Xinyi (which is not 100% free of suspicion), obitsu (parabox), smart dolls and dollfiedream. There could be some other but I dont remember.

Does anyone have a list/resource for which of the 1/3 ABS/HJD dolls are like, legitimate? I was thinking about getting one as a cheap body for a floating head but I don’t want to support a recast!

i think i’ve posted only like one pic of my napidoll carol even though i’ve had it for a few months...i’ve tried so many different looks but nothing sticks u__u i’ve never wanted a “little boy” doll but i think it just IS a little boy sculpt so i guess i’ll go with it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ tried to cut this wig in to a boy style and it looks ok!

Comparison of various Chinese-made 1/6 scale BJD bodies

I found an interesting video which compares various popular 1/6 scale body options in the Chinese-speaking BJD world.  It’s a pity the uploader only has Chinese-made bodies and a Volks body, it would be interesting to throw some of the Korean bodies in the mix!  

If you browse Taobao or Chinese-language BJD sites, you may have noticed the overwhelming popularity of certain sculpts - chiefly Napidoll Carol, but also Miadoll Soo.  They are so pervasive that it seems like almost every BJD collector has one...!  Since Napi and Mia only sell heads, this seems to have led to an interesting phenomenon of purpose-made bodies, specifically to fit these heads, that is, the makers of these bodies don’t seem to sell any original head sculpts of their own.  Besides Rouchang (below - a collaboration between BJD dealer Engodoll/ 银谷屋 and an independent sculptor [source]), other examples are the slim Chaofan (”fried rice”) body and Pettimal (below).

Here’s a summary of what the uploader of the video had to say (she seems to favour taller, slimmer bodies overall):

Rouchang (”sausage”) body - Tall and slim, nice legs, looks good in clothes, poseability is not bad, stands well, many option hands which are well sculpted, but the thigh area is loose? and it doesn’t sit up well, especially with clothes on (a major flaw in her book).  The neck requires a silicon “KIPS” disc for Miadoll heads, else the fit would be too loose.  Many customised colours available (to match Volks, Napi, Miadoll, etc.)  Reasonable price.

Huajing - Cheapest option.  Fleshier than Rouchang, still quite tall.  Resin quality, standing and posing are all not bad.  Six hand options, fewer than Rouchang.  She has heard from long-time owners that it has knee issues - after a while the knee joint tends not to fit well and will easily buckle.  Legs are fat, especially compared to the small feet, so it’s hard to wear stockings.

Spirit Doll - Too expensive. Resin quality is average.  Legs are cute, but they’re too short.  Even with a KIPS disc in the neck, the head she placed (Napi Maron, I believe) on it cannot look up.  The details are good, better than Rouchang and Huajing, but she doesn’t recommend it because it’s relatively expensive.  

DF-H - Quite cheap.  Quite chubby, has a nice waist line.  Details are ok.  Long wait time.  Its legs are the fattest of all her dolls, so some shoes cannot fit.  The thing she dislikes the most is the squeaky noise it makes and its plasticky-ness.  I think she said the limbs can be kicky (弹?).

Volks - Very detailed and beautiful.  Short and plump, not slender like Rouchang, yet it looks good (she sounds bemused XD).  Needless to say, the quality is great.  But it’s expensive and harder to get.  And you can’t order custom colours.  (As with DF-H, I think she said the hands and feet are kicky (弹?), but as the owner of three Volks Yo-SD’s I certainly haven’t found that to be the case... >_>)

She also mentioned some bodies she doesn’t have at the moment, including Charm Doll, which she says looks great but has terrible wait times (she has one on order), and Pettimal, which was new to me and certainly does look lovely!  (added to my watch list)  It reminds me a little of the Korean SQ-LAB body, with its shapely Unoa-like knees~

Also, as a bonus tidbit, LAKE has a tanned skin Mira with her own original 30cm body in stock on her Taobao!  I was very tempted but I asked and the tanned colour is apparently colour-matched to SOOM iMda instead of SOOM The Gem, so it’s a bit too chocolatey for my taste.  I did snag a normal skin head though. :D An unexpected purchase - I haven’t decided if it will be a boy or a girl yet, or what body I’ll put it on! (thus the research I’ve been doing XD)
