History of Vannam
The 'Vannam' are a main component of Kandyan dance form. The word Vannam comes from the Sinhalese word Varnana meaning descriptive praise. The fairly complicated rhythmic forms of steps and movement are from original dance patterns of the Kohomba Kankariya. These are solo poetic dances, sung and danced expressing a dominant idea. An ancient text refers to 36 of them.
History reveals that the Kandyan King Sri Weeraparakrama Narendrasinghe gave considerable encouragement to Dance and Music. In his Kavikaramadwa - the decorated dance arena appurtenant to the Assembly Hall - there were song and poetry contests. It is said that the Kavi (poetry sung to music) for the 18 principle Vannams were composed here by an old sage named Ganithalankara, with the help of a Buddhist priest of the Malwatte Chapter of the Kandy Temple of the Tooth Relic.
It is possible that some of these Vannam have come from ancient times and that others were composed afresh or adapted to expound the majesty of the King and his court.
In order to make the dances more readily understood to an audience which would not comprehend the words of the lyrical poems, there has been an introduction of mime and acrobatics.
The Nine Moods: Navarasa
The Navarasa - nine moods are contained in the composition of the lyrical poems and are not generally expressed in the dance interpretation, hence the recent tendency toward mime.

The First Vannam
The Vannams Gahaka, Gajaga, Asadrusha, Udara and Thuraga are in praise respectively of the conch shell at the King’s consecration, the Royal Elephant, the King’s glory, monarchy and the chariot-horse were the first ones to be written. This later grew into 18 Vannams’ inspired by nature, history, religion and legends.
Tumblr media
1 Gahaka Vannama | The Conch Shell
This vannama is performed in respect to the Conch Shell. This is a shell of a large predatory sea snail, Turbinella pyrum, found in the Indian Ocean. This vannama is dedicated to the King of the celestial world; an eulogy of Sakra. It is presented in the medium of divine orchestra where Brahma, Vishvakarma and Iswara blow the horn and play the flute. Before the King of the Universe, Iswara blows the conch shell and the performance begins.

2 Gajaga Vannama | The Elephant
This Vannama is the recital of the Elephant. Dancers enact the majestic walk of the celestial Iravana, elephant of the sacred legends. The dignified features of the elephant are portrayed in choice diction; Irvana’s bathing and frolicking about, its stride and movements are imitated with considerable technical skill by the dancers. This vannama is among the most remarkable of the series danced with stately steps by performers commonly wearing costumes in Black/ Red/ Gold. The singers perform the Gajaga Vannam Kaviya harmoniously as the dancers enter stage, meanwhile the drummers play by their side.

3 Asadrusha Vannama | Praising The Buddha
This vannama is an eulogy to the Triple Gem, Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha: “I pay homage to the lotus feet of the Lord Buddha, honoured by kings, Brahmas, Vishnu and other Gods. I adore the Dhamma proclaimed by the Great Lord, salute the noble Eightfold Path. I pay homage to Sariputta & Moggallana who renounced the world to follow The Buddha. Singing to all assembled, I dance with joy the delightful Vannama of this”. This recital is essentially in praise of the Buddha, the Supreme Being unequaled.

Udara Vannama | Majesty of The King
Reciting the Royalty (Udara) by expressing the majesty of the King, the Vannama describes, “Adorned with the sixty four ornaments, the king strolls through streets of the city riding on an elephant accompanied by his retinue of foot soldiers amidst the pomp and pageantry of a procession. The music of the five-fold instruments rends the air. People pay homage and the city is jubilant”. The king thus idolized by the people is presumed to be King Narendrasinghe, the last of the kings of Kandy of Sinhala descent.

5 Thuranga Vannama
his Vannama moves with the rhythm of the horse, lyrics composed to the lasting glory of the good stallion, the noble born and high minded, Kanthaka. The stallion of Prince Siddhartha (Kanthaka) is the inspiration for this Vannama. It describes the story of Prince’s great renunciation. It is said that the Prince mounts the horse led by Channa and the three ride along cheerfully until River Anoma, where Kanthaka leaps across it (river) with Siddhartha on his back as Channa was clinging on to the tail of him.

Breaking down the script into a trailer format
In the initial stages, the script was crafted to tell a broader narrative within a 2-minute short film. However, after reviewing the pacing and flow, I felt that certain scenes were too drawn out, and the emotional impact of the story wasn’t as sharp as it could be. To address this, I condensed the script into a more compact trailer format, highlighting only the most essential scenes and dialogue, which created a more dynamic, impactful story.
The trailer format better captured the core essence of the film—the unspoken tension between Pramila and Dascon—and allowed for a more engaging visual experience within the constraints of the short runtime.

Dascon and Pramila - A forbidden love story
In Sri Lanka, romantic stories are quite common. Above all, I was fascinated by the era of the Kandyan Kingdom. In Sri Lankan history, it was one of the most significant periods. During my research and article reading, I came across Dascon and Pramila's story. A tragically ended romantic relationship.
The story goes back to the 18th century when the coastal belt of Sri Lanka was under the sway of the Dutch colonialists. In 1672 a fleet of French warships landed at the eastern port of Trincomalee. On its way the French had fought several battles at sea with the Dutch and conquered them. At the time King Rajasinghe II, ruler of the independent kingdom of Kandy and the Dutch were sworn enemies. On hearing of the good news of the defeat of the Dutch, the king accorded a warm welcome to the French. Later the fleet left the country but the second commanding officer named Gascogne stayed back and married a Portuguese woman, taking up residence in Kandy.
In 1686 the son of King Rajasinghe II ascended the throne as Vimaladharmasuriya II. The son born to Gascogne was named Pedro Gascon (To facilitate pronunciation, Gascon was changed to Dascon). Though his parents were Christians, a temple (Piriven) education was preferred for the child under the guidance of Buddhist monks. It was at the temple school that Dascon met the son of King Vimaladharmasuriya II and they became fast friends. Dascon won a special affection of the king and the two children often played together at the palace. As the Kandyan nobility plotted to prevent the now young crown prince from being the next heir to the throne, he fled the palace stealthily and later managed to quell the rebellion, thwarting the attempts of the conspirators. In 1707 he was enthroned as King Vira Parakrama Narendrasinghe at the age of 17 and to show his gratitude to his childhood friend who gave wholehearted support to the prince to crush the insurrection, Dascon was appointed to the post of Maha Adhikaram (Chief Minister) after two years, thus earning the wrath of the noblemen.
In 1708 the king brought a pretty princess from South India from the Nayakkar royal clan to be his queen consort, named Pramila Devi. She was the daughter of Lord Pitti Nayakkar and Lady Abhirami Devi. King Narendrasinghe is generally described as a playful, quarrelsome and wicked king addicted to alcohol and gambling, and fond of women. This earned for him the nickname “Sellam Nirindu” (meaning in Sinhalese “Playboy King”).
Nevertheless, it so happened that while the king was enjoying himself with his concubines at the harem in the palaces of Senkadagala and Kundasale, Pramila was doomed to be left alone at Hanguranketha, the other palace of the king. It was then that a forbidden love developed between the handsome minister and the forlorn queen consort. Pramila is said to have studied the Sinhalese language from Buddhist monks and she later became versed in poetry. Dascon too had an inborn talent to be a poet. Both of them exchanged poems of love and were inflamed with passion for each other. This romance became an open secret in the palace.
Then Pramila contracted a disease which the royal physicians could not diagnose. Prior to conducting a ritual, a life-seized image in clay resembling the queen, had to be made. A sculptor was commissioned in this task under the supervision of Dascon. When, on completion of the work, the minister noted the absence of a birth mark on one thigh of the queen and asked the sculptor to correct it, king’s suspicions grew, wondering how his faithful friend could have known this. Incensed at the assumption of a possible sexual relationship between the two in his absence, the king promptly incarcerated him. While in prison, Dascon wrote poems, asking for pardon, to be handed over to the king. Yet, the nobleman named Levke Rala, the protagonist of the conspiracy, who had always been burning with jealousy of Dascon, accusing him of alleged missionary activities, saw to it that the poems never reached the king. With no explanation coming from the friend for his breach of trust, the king ordered to behead Dascon in 1710. Only after his death, King Narendrasinghe came to know the truth. Levke Rala, who had by then replaced Dascon as Chief Minister, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Pramila, who saw her lover being taken to the executioner, was distraught with grief. A legend says that she committed suicide by eating a poisonous tuber of a wild plant, thus drawing an illicit love-affair to a tragic end
Continuation of the story :

Vannam Components
Vannams are believed to have originated as songs composed in a dance arena in the 18th century and belong to the Kandyan dancing tradition. The word Vannam translated to Sinhala Varnana means 'descriptive praise'.
There are seven components of the Vannam dances:
Thanama – Singing a note of the melody to each syllable
Thitha – The beat indicated with cymbals giving a rhythmic timing
Kaviya – The poem vocalized by the dancer
Bera-matraya – Rhythm of the drum
Kasthirama – The finale of the first movement of the dance
Seeru-maruwa – The movement in preparation for Adawwa
Adawwa – The finale of rhythmic body and foot movements
The Vannams Gahaka, Gajaga, Asadrusha, Udara and Thuraga are in praise respectively of the conch shell at the King’s consecration, the Royal Elephant, the King’s glory, monarchy and the chariot-horse were the first ones to be written.
