Throughout my life, in consistent and sometimes surprising patterns, Cash spoke to me about spiritual matters, even if I didn’t get it on the first pass. Marlowe soon finds herself unraveling the tangled dynamics of this small town and the legacy of a summer home that holds both secrets and scars. What follows is a gripping mystery that weaves between past and present as Marlowe confronts the fallibility of her own memory, the shocking truth about her lost friend, and an ultimatum that will change the course of her life.

Marlowe Fisher loves spending time in her family's upscale upstate New York farmhouse. She has spent every weekend and every summer here since her family purchased it, quickly befriending local girl Nora, and the two of them held onto a friendship with each other ever since. But after Nora mysteriously disappeared from her family's property in 1998, Marlowe has struggled with various issues but continues to return to her family home.

It is 2018, and it is after the Thanksgiving holidays when she ventures out on a walk with her brothers Nate and Henry. Taking the direction they often did as children and teens, they come across a tent. Though this isn't something unusual as their father, Frank, often gave locals permission to hunt on the property, they come across the body of a man within the tent, beaten to death.

Disturbed, they return home and phone the police, and the investigation into the mystery man begins. He is identified as Harmon Gallagher, a distant relative of the former owners of the property across the street. Known as the Gallaghter Place, three brothers once kept a farm on that property until each of them had passed on and the Fisher family purchased the land themselves.

Marlowe learns for the first time that Harmon had begun threatening various members of her family, hoping eventually to get them to sell back that piece of land to a Gallagher, though Frank wasn't interested in selling it. They kept this hidden from Marlowe for reasons unknown, until she discovers that he was trying to goad them into revealing what really happened to Nora more than 20 years ago.

Marlowe begins doing her own investigative work, both into Nora's disappearance and into the Gallagher family. She wishes to speak with Enzo, the family's caretaker, though he is now old and living with a diminished mind and memory, therefore making conversatiosn with him nearly impossible to decipher. The detectives on the case seem to think that the Fisher family knows more than they're letting on, more so after Enzo's DNA is found on something that Nora owned, and he, along with Nate, are placd under arrest.

Determined to get Nate and Enzo free, Henry, who is now a lawyer himself, follows them to the police station and they return the following day. Marlowe speaks with Enzo, telling her to go to the Bend, a local hideout that the kids used to visit when they were younger.

When she does, she locates Nora's body, hidden within a rock wall that she and her siblings, along with Nora, had put up one summer in order to give the appearance of graves and keep people off of the property. In the end, it ultimately became exactly what it was masking as: the last resting place of Nora.

Nate relays that Henry had come to him that last summer, telling him that Nora had told him that she was pregnant. The two of them had been sleeping together for a few months, and Henry, who was only 14 at the time, was terrified. Nate took this issue to his father, and Frank, Glory, the matriarch of the family, along with Enzo, attempted to reason with Nora that an abortion would be the best situation for them all and offered to help her fund it, but Nora wanted nothing to do with this plan.

On the night in question, Nora had left the home to take out the garage and didn't return, the others only becoming alarmed after she didn't return back into the house a few minutes later. Nate says that it was their mother who had accidentally pushed Nora in an attempt to get her away from her after Nora attacked her out of anger, that ended up in a fatal fall and Nora died. Enzo hid the body while the others desperately searched for her, only later removing her body into it's final resting place.

Knowing now the truth, she understands that she cannot go to the police with the information without implicating her entire family, ultimately deciding to keep the secret herself. Though she is determined to not forgive a single person involved in her best friend's disappearance, only happyto finally have answers as to what happened to Nora.

Imo, as always, you wrote a masterpiece and are correct on every front. It’s always such a relief to hear folks talk about Sam in this gentle, empathetic way because… that’s literally what the game was TRYING to do.

To me, it very much feels like a TLOU2 moment, and the boundary between what type of person YOU ARE outside of watching media. Have you NEVER done something wrong for the right reasons? Lied to someone to protect them? Against your better judgement, fought to save a relationship in danger of fading altogether? Y’all know me. I’m as big a Nate Stan as there is. I’m the old man next door screaming at the sky that Elena is a villain herself for marrying Nathan at all. I’m crazy. But to me, THAT was Nate’s villain moment. It is cruel, and heartless, and thoughtless, and it’s clear that, like Nate, some people get so wrapped up in their own blessings that they can’t even FATHOM what it must be like for a person to live without ever having had them at all, and the lengths a person might go to fill those very basic human needs when they have no other option.

Naughty Dog games, I’d argue since Uncharted 2, have always been a testament to the practice of and exercise in empathy. Harry was treated with empathy by the story. Chloe was treated with empathy by the story. Nate tries to save Marlowe. Chloe gets her redemption in Lost Legacy. Nadine fully turns a new leaf and turns from a villain to a protagonist. Without nuance, what is the point in storytelling at all beyond fairytales for children that tell you ‘slow and steady wins the race’ and ‘don’t trust sketchy men in the woods’? Would fandoms even exist at all if there was nothing of any deeper value/interpretation to discuss?

In conclusion, Sam is easily the most interesting, dynamic, likable video game character of all time for me, and while I still wish they kept him as the sleeper villain (ala final Ellie/Abby fight, Nate saves him anyway), I couldn’t be more happy they went the route they did. I’m still shocked people will be so harsh about Sam while completely negating Nate doing the exact same thing. We just know Sam less. Maybe there’s a real life lesson to take away from that.

Okay, so let’s talk about Sam (she says daily). The moment it’s revealed that he’s been lying about Alcazar and working with Rafe? It hits hard. Yes. Especially from Nathan’s perspective, it’s not just a betrayal; it’s a sucker-punch to the very core of their relationship. I remember the first time I played UC4 and hit that moment where it was revealed that Sam had been lying about Alcazar. I was stunned - completely thrown off. I actually paused the game, just sat there in shock for a minute, staring at the screen. I turned to my sister, and she was just as dumbstruck, sitting there in a stupor, both of us trying to process what had just happened. I think I even hollered a few choice words at him. Once it had sunk in, though, I knew that this wasn’t just about treasure. If Sam was motivated purely by greed, he could, and I’d argue would, have gone with anyone - stayed with Rafe, for instance, or taken Nate up on his Cutter offer. He didn’t need to manipulate Nate. No, there had to be something more to it. Then, lo and behold, we get the second flashback and the pieces began to fall into place.

I’ve seen a lot of people rush to label Sam as the “bad guy” after this reveal, and it frustrates me because the nuance gets lost and the flashback is overshadowed by blind rage from the player. Yes, Sam lied. He betrayed Nate's trust. That’s a bad thing to do. But the why is so important here, and it's something we shouldn’t just gloss over. Sam’s been rotting in a cell for over a decade, isolated and cut off from the world, while Nate was out there living this life full of adventures, relationships, and experiences. Sam didn’t get that. And that’s a huge part of why he did what he did. He didn’t lie out of some cruel desire to hurt his brother or get revenge. He lied because he was desperate. He wanted to do something with Nate again - one last grand adventure to make up for the years they lost. He was afraid Nate would say no, and in his desperation, he made a selfish decision to get what he thought was his last chance at redemption. Sam’s not a villain. He’s a complicated, flawed human being, and his motivations are rooted in something much deeper than greed alone, or malice.

Both before, and after the lie is out in the open, Sam proves again and again that he’d do anything for Nate. He fights for him throughout, and he’s willing to die for him. At least three times throughout the game, Sam risks his life without hesitation to protect his brother. That’s not the behaviour of someone who's malicious or evil. That’s the behaviour of someone who made a mistake, yes, but who loves his brother deeply. It’s messy, and the way he went about it is wrong, but that’s what makes Sam so compelling. He’s not a villain. He’s just a person who made a (big) mistake in an attempt to make up for the time and experiences he lost. He's also, I'd argue, attempting to quell any involuntary resentment he might feel towards Nathan for moving on.

And when you look at it from that angle, it’s heartbreaking. It’s never been about treasure or riches; it’s about Sam wanting to be seen, wanting to matter to his brother, after being invisible for so long, and having his position of importance that he’s held in Nate’s life since childhood overtaken by Sully and Elena.

I remember in my first playthrough when we got to the moment where Sam says to Nate, “No offence to these guys [Elena, Sully], but they don’t get it,” and Nate replies with, “Actually, Sam, they do,” and I was just flabbergasted. It hit me like a ton of bricks. That was the moment for me where the full weight of everything Sam had been carrying came into focus, and where the true complexity of the situation began to sink in. It was painful. It made (makes) me cry. But honestly, it was also where my understanding and, eventually, my forgiveness (for lack of a better term) for Sam really kicked in.

Sam’s not just talking about the treasure or the thrill of the adventure - he’s talking about his entire purpose. Perhaps the one thing that has kept him alive and going during those long years in prison: the idea of doing something monumental with Nate, of rebuilding the bond they once shared. Honouring Cassandra. His hubris? Sure, that’s there - but it’s also been his salvation. That dream has been the one thing he’s clung to. And for Nate to dismiss it as an “obsession,” to basically reduce it to nothing - to essentially call Sam greedy - felt like such a monumentally cruel thing for him to say. Because it’s not about the treasure. It’s about what they lost - about their mother, about being brothers again. For Sam, this was the reason he kept pushing forward all those years. And here comes Nate, smacking the map back into his chest like it’s meaningless, telling him “we’re not those kids anymore.” It’s just crushing, because, to me, Nate doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand how much Sam needs this. For Sam, this isn’t just an obsession or an adventure; this is his last chance to feel connected to his brother again, to share something that matters, and to not be on the sidelines now he’s formed a life of his own. That, to me, was the most heartbreaking part of the game. It’s the one thing Sam has been fighting for, and Nate’s dismissive response makes it feel like all that hope is being stripped away.

So yeah, Sam’s choices were wrong, and his actions caused harm - no doubt about it. But that doesn’t make him a villain or a bad person. And it doesn’t erase the fact that, deep down, his motivations were rooted in a deep, human desire to reconnect with the person he loves most. This isn’t a story of a “good” guy vs. a “bad” guy. It’s about the complexities of the human experience, the desperation we sometimes feel, and the lengths we’ll go to to be valued by the people we care about. Sam made mistakes, but he’s also a man who is willing to risk everything for his brother, even at the cost of his own integrity.

So Sully is Nate’s mentor, best friend, and father all in one. We saw him basically adopt a 15 year old Nate with very real concern for the kid driving him to take the kid under his wing. He does this after betraying a client who is paying him very well and risking being shot by her men in order to protect this kid he doesn’t know. We saw this in the same game where our villain Marlowe (that same ex-client) tried to plant the idea in Nate’s head that Sully only took him under his wing so he could use Nate in money making schemes and treasure hunts. Nate’s just coming out of being drugged when she tries this and he still immediately calls bullshit because it 100% is bullshit.

So when they made the movie they apparently thought it would be a great idea to change things up by having Marlowe be absolutely right about Sully being a scumbag who starts things off by immediately trying to use Nate to get rich.
