“That’s the problem, Aunt Piper. Anytime I try to talk to someone, they just end up staring at me like I’m insane. Everyone just thinks that I’m the freaky genius girl and it sucks.” It was such a ridiculous thing to complain about, being the top of her class. Well, it would be if her classmates didn’t talk about her behind her back. Her “witchy” vibe, to quote Tamora, didn’t exactly help matters.

Geeky as it sounded, Kat really did love volunteering at her school’s library. She spent an hour or two every day shelving books and occasionally running the desk when the librarian had to leave for a few minutes for volunteer hours. It was so much better than other volunteering options in her opinion.

Like today. Mrs. Raynes had stepped out for a little while, leaving Kat in charge. Hearing another student approach the desk, Kat closed her book with a snap and slid off her stool to face the other.

“Can I help you with something?”
