MU-YEOL:

Mu-yeol couldn’t tell you when his hands stopped shaking after the call with Soon-ja, but when they finally did he flit up to Nemo’s room, one of the boxes of pictures from Korea in hand. Nemo might like to look at them after they talked it might comfort him.

“Hey, kid.” He knocked on the open door frame before walking in, an open door in their home meaning coming in was fine if you knock. Mu-yeol sat down on the edge of Nemo’s bed and offered him the box. “I brought some stuff for you.”

He let Nemo peek in the box before continuing. “Um. I just got off the phone with your imo. She…there’s an update about eomma. Soon-ja is the only reason we know anything, I really appreciate her. Do you want to know what’s happening or would you rather not?”

NEMO: Ah. The storm was here. Nemo had this feeling, see. He couldn’t explain it. Maybe it had been his talent all along, reaching the four corners of the world and whispering back to Nemo that soon there was going to be something awful blowing his way. It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? With the court case opened and everything? Nemo had been able to ignore it for a while, but it had always been there, rumbling in the back of his mind. Now it arrived with Appa did. As soon as Appa fluttered in, Nemo knew something was wrong by the way Appa didn’t look her directly in the eye. And he was right. Nemo gripped the box he’d been handed– which had been an excuse or a distraction or a crutch, or something. He glanced down at the pictures, quiet for a moment. “I mean– I wanna know what you know,” Nemo said after a beat.

MU-YEOL:

Okay.

He wanted to know, so he’ll tell him even if he worried it’d make him sad.

“Soon-ja said, uh, someone turned himself in. Well. His father turned him in. Apparently he confessed to his father right away, back then, but.” Mu-yeol chuckled mirthlessly and ran his fingers through his hair. “His father was a cop, can you believe it? He obtained the CCTV and hid it for years. The old man’s guilty conscience finally won out I guess. So that’s one person out of five.”

NEMO: Someone turned himself in. Nemo heard the sentence, but didn’t really understand it. There was a lot of context missing– context implied. Course, Nemo had heard over the years in the most vague terms what had happened to his eomma. She was attacked and she was killed by a group of men. How? Appa never spoke in detail. And Nemo had never asked, because who wanted to hear something that brutal and sad? And so this felt ominous and strange and vague too. Nemo hesitated, but then finally asked the question he knew the answer to, but he needed to hear anyway, to be sure. “You mean… one of the um, one of the men? Who… did it?” Did it. Beat his eomma. Murdered her. He couldn’t form these words.

MU-YEOL:

Mu-yeol, as if Nemo was still small and sitting on his lap asking him why their family was so different from all of the other pixie families, ran his fingers through his hair and smiled thinly. His sweet boy really did manage to grow up so nicely; So-yeon would be proud.

“Yes,” Mu-yeol said gently. “Um. One of them is in jail now, pending the rest of the investigation. So there absolutely will be a trial for at least one person. I’ll have to go to Korea.”

He held Nemo’s hand.

“We should talk about if you will too. But we can save it for another day if you want.”

NEMO: I’ll have to go to Korea. Why? Nemo nearly said that out loud, feeling like a seedling again, asking innocent questions. But he wasn’t a seedling and so the older parts of his soul answered the still-young ones. Because Appa is a witness. Still, the young parts of Nemo wanted to close his fingers around Appa’s shirt sleeve and tug. Don’t go, he wanted to say. He wanted to ask that of Appa for Appa’s sake as much as he’d ask for his own. It was going to open up so many demons. It would unleash so much pain. Nemo was terrified of what that could mean. It had been awhile since Appa had been too depressed to leave his bedroom, but then again, if you really thought about it, it wasn’t that long at all– just a year or so. His healing was still new and fragile, like a baby bird that hadn’t grown all its feathers. So yeah, Appa had to go, and that meant– “No, I – I wanna go,” Nemo said right away. “Like I said– I wanna know what you know. If you go, I go.”

MU-YEOL:

He expected that answer, Nam-min was very very serious about them being a team. As he was twenty now and technically all grown up, Mu-yeol could not make him stay. He also didn’t want to. It was selfish but knowing he’d get to immediately hug his son after court every day made it seem less daunting. Like, no matter how stressful it will be, he’ll still have his Nemo to look at as proof that So-yeon had been real and wonderful and that they’d loved each other.

And maybe worrying about Nemo will keep him together long enough to only break down once or twice in front of his siblings. Showing him Korea might also serve as a good distraction.

Still, there was much to consider.

“Okay. If that’s what you want I’d love to bring you to Korea.” Mu-yeol even smiled at bringing Nemo home for the first time. It quickly faded however as he remembered who else would be there. “Um, but. You know her…parents will be there. Obviously. If that’ll be triggering for you I won’t make you go to court at all. But if you can stand to see them at a distance, my siblings and Soon-ja— we won’t let them near you unless you say so. I understand if seeing her is upsetting too, and so does she. She said she won’t go near you either without your permission if you need that. I think we do need to talk about a plan that works for you regarding your mother’s parents. I’m sorry to have to bring it up.”

He pressed a kiss to Nemo’s forehead and held onto him, in effort of keeping him safe from the bad memories mentioning them would bring up.

NEMO: The mention of his grandparents made Nemo feel– nothing at all. But it was that numbness he recognized as not-right. Nemo wasn’t a person who felt numb. He felt it all, instead, all his anger, all his sadness, all his anxiety. He hated it about himself. Nemo wanted to be calm and rational. He thought that was the adult way to be, but here he was, always crying or panicking. Obviously he should cry and panic, thinking about the people who had tried to take him from Appa, and from his home. But Nemo just blinked slowly. The news sank in, but he still couldn’t feel it. Maybe he wouldn’t until he was right there in the courtroom, and when Halmoni set her eyes on him… Ah. There. A first shudder up his spine. He didn’t want to see her. But it couldn’t be avoided, could it? Appa was looking at him so worried, so Nemo quickly smiled for him. “That’s okay. I mean, we don’t have to talk about that now. It’s still far off, right? Trials don’t happen right away.”

MU-YEOL:

Mu-yeol didn’t want to push the conversation because he imagined Nemo needed time to process that reminder before they could. Still, he wanted to bring it up. So he could consider it.

“I’m not sure how far off it will be. It could be in a couple months. It could be over a year. So if you think about what you want to do regarding them, you let me know what I can do to make you feel safe, eo?” He ran his fingers through Nemo’s hair and tried not to think too hard (at all) about how he felt about any of this. “I don’t want you to stress yourself out for me or feel unsafe. Protecting you is more important.”

It was better to focus on Nemo than anything else.

NEMO: A couple of moons might as well be a year to Nemo, really. He wasn’t the sort who liked to plan ahead, even though that was what Appa was giving him a chance to do. Instead, he heard a ‘couple of months’ and he took that as an excuse to push it away as far as he could from himself. Besides, it was just too overwhelming, eh? He had too much going on. Like school, and work, and performance practice in the Hollow. Maybe when things slowed down a little, then he’d find the time to think about it. (Things never slowed down for Nemo. If they did, he just started something else. Living fast was in his blood.) So… yeah. This was fine, at least for now, and like Appa said, it could be a year. Maybe it’d even be more. Humans found ways to get in their own way and make things like trials super complicated. “I won’t stress myself out,” said Nemo now. He kept smiling. “It’s fine, Appa. I mean, I’ll be fine. But you shouldn’t stress out either, eh? And if you are, you need to tell me. Then I can be there for you too.”

MU-YEOL:

Mu-yeol smiled, though he knew he wouldn’t. At least, he wouldn’t tell Nemo first.

“I have Jun, David, plenty of people to talk to about that.” Mu-yeol said. “You don’t want to hear what’s going on up here. It’s quite boring actually, I mean.”

He shrugged and gestured vaguely with his hand before letting it drop onto his lap.

“Just kind of. Have you ever made a phone call and been put on hold? That’s what it feels like.” Being in the middle of a process but there weren’t any answers, results, things to sit with, it was pretty frustrating. You had nothing to react to, nothing to feel about.

“I just wish I — we — didn’t have to go through any of this. But.” He handwaved. “It is what it is, yeah?”

"He's been in and out. I brought him to my flat if you'd like to see him. Or I can tell him to call you when he wakes up?"
