ramble of my scattered thoughts on the piece under cut as usual cuz i love talking 😋

This has been an idea I've been cookin for a while, and it was so cluttered and unlike any other ensemble piece I've made... and I decided I oughta do it anyway. I love Miku, I love Vocaloid, and I wanted to do something really ambitious and crazy for her anniversary. Crazy that she's turning her "canon" age this year TwT

I had the idea floating around since like, May...? And then finally started acting on it around June 18. I'm terrible with deadlines, obvious with how I can never make a silly birthday post in time, so I started wayyyy ahead to make sure I have some room to be lazy lol, especially with an idea as ambitious as this.

This was finished on July 12! So I had to sit on this for an annoying amount of time. Very difficult for someone like me who just wants to talk about everything I'm working on to the masses. But at the very least, that gave me the time to work on the draft for this post.

Here's some ~behind the scenes~ scribbles leading up to the finished piece!

Left is the chicken scratch plan i made in my handy dandy notebook (whenever things are getting real and ambitious, i always made a rough ROUGH plan in there. Usually I'd do a rough pass of the full thing, but this was too complicated for me to do traditionally. I majorly benefited from digital tools to make this possible). CyberDiva and CyberSongman were considered, but I ended up cutting them cuz I just didn't feel like drawing them sorry-- (just pretend they're off to the side. They gave Ruby and Clara the pizza lol). Right is the "final" completed sketch (before I decided to include Chika mid-way through coloring and VY1 and VY2 near the finish line). I started by drawing the main "groups" separated on a different canvas so I can plop them into the main canvas for easy rearranging and transforming. However I got lazy and ended up drawing everyone in the bottom right corner directly on the canvas since I liked seeing the big picture of everyone's positions. Y'know.

Almost excluded Chika! But I like her design so much that I just felt like including her last-minute. You win this time, Chika fans. VY1 and VY2 were very close to being cut! I added them when I began doing the banner and thought "eh why not". I figured their non-human designs would be pretty easy to include pushed back in the bg. Ik VY1 is more commonly associated with the fan design, but I referenced the hairpin cuz it was simpler and the fan looked very annoying to draw 😭

Sorry to the fans of many Vocaloids I had to cut because this composition was insane enough as is. I promise I wanted to include fellas like CUL, LUMi and Sachiko 😭 I will admit I was a little biased on who I wanted to include over others. Like, I don't normally care for Bruno and Clara, but I wanted to get some more international 'loids in the mix. Also wanted to stick in the realm of official designs and not fan-designs since, as much as I can appreciate those, are just a whole "wait who is that guy supposed to be" situation I didn't wanna deal with. I also did wanna include even more character references through the balloons, but they ended up being kind of ugly and overcomplicated the BG :,) (Oh, and while this was originally planned to be a Vocaloid-only piece, I did end up including Teto, Neru, and Haku 'cuz those are Miku's besties dude!!! They may not be Officially in the club but they're her girls and it would be criminal to not invite them to her birthday).

Anyway, this project marks the first time I've drawn a lot of Vocaloids. Lily, Piko, Rana, Yuki, Yukari, Miki, Maika, and many more lol. All of 'em I've heard or seen in passing, but now I actually drew them, and some have really cool and fun designs!! I got into a habit of drawing Merli after this since I just love her design for example. And I'll probably be drawing more lol!!

Oh and the last thing I'll add for now!! The cake is indeed made up of various song references!! I wanted to reference the "big four" producers, just absolute icons in Vocaloid history. The pink/black checkerboard is "World is Mine" (Ryo), the crescents on the side is "Rolling Girl" (Wowaka), the smiley faces is "Matryoshka" (Hachi), and the three hearts on the side is "The Vampire" (DECO*27, which is sort of a symbol of his whole Mannequin album tbh). I know "The Vampire" is a bit modern but I couldn't think of anything else off the top of my head. I'm a fake DECO fan I know 😔 "Matryoshka" was originally going to be referenced in the colors of the candles but believe me it looked like shit so I just went for something else last minute 😭

oliver is not slick. he might think he is, given how many women he's easily won over, but when his teammates see their poor captain gazing longingly at their manager, they can only sigh.

it seems like the entire world but the two of you are aware of the feelings oliver and you harbour for each other, and to be frank, the u-20 team is absolutely sick of it.

ever since you joined them as their manager, they've stopped hearing about oliver's failed dates, and they've stopped catching oliver flirting with a new girl in the front rows after every one of their matches. instead, oliver has added a new line to his template interview responses, thanking their "dear manager" for the unwavering support, and he's added a new stop to his post-training journey, where he'll walk you home before he picks up his takeout dinner.

neru even overhears oliver asking you out for dinner once. you turned him down with a smile, citing you already had plans, and told him to go ahead with the rest of the team. neru chokes when you tell oliver not to ask someone out for dinner with such a smile on his face, because he'll give them the wrong idea.

(of course, oliver didn't invite the others to dinner after that.)

neru tells the others about this, and they're equally as frustrated and perplexed, because how could you be brushing off oliver's advances if you were into him too? beyond that, why was oliver hiding behind the excuse of a dinner instead of flat out asking you out on a date? did he not notice the way your feelings bled into the way you treated him, versus the rest?

of course, the team knows you try your best to be professional and fair. they have no complaints about your care for them, other than the sickly sweet smile you'd have on your face when you go up to oliver first after every game to tell him good job, or the way you lean into his space and hang off every last word he says, or the way your eyes always stick to him like magnets whenever he's in the room. maybe to add one last complaint, they can't stand how you don't realise oliver does all that back to you too.

the u-20 team, excluding oliver and you, gather for dinner that night and conspire. they put together their observations of the two of you and assert their theories on why you're still not together yet, despite the obvious spark and oliver's usual straightforwardness. it's a rather comical scene, the nine boys speculating and gossiping about their captain's love life with seriousness that easily measured up to their post-match debriefs.

they leave their dinner-turned-conspiracy-meeting satisfied with their conclusion that perhaps, you brush off oliver's advances as just a part of him because you know about his flirtatious tendencies, and perhaps, oliver is getting discouraged by your lack of reciprocity, which is why he doesn't push you as much as he normally would.

what they don't know is that your rejections have only made oliver more intrigued and mindful of your boundaries, things he hasn't cared much about in the past, and they have only made him more addicted to the chase. oliver knows he'll have to work doubly hard to make you look his way, not as a part of the u-20 team but as a man, so for now, he'll revel in your scent when he leans in to help you with your bags. for now, he'll savour the fleeting touches of your fingertips when you carefully tape his knee.

because once he breaks down your walls, he'll be able to do everything he's been dreaming of to you.

OCs Emotes Part 2!

Part 2 and final part of my OCs Emotes! And with a special guest at the end! Hope you all enjoyed looking and reading them up!

First is Hector the Vindicator! Shuteye's younger brother and definitely the most mean and aggressive of the two.

Unlike his older brother, Hector seeks to conquer and take over territories with his Clan, and he doesn't care what Shuteye thinks of it. He is easily annoyed and angered, so watch your back!

Next is Korith the Vindicator! Arguably the strongest character I have after Nerus in his Powered form! This mentally unstable man is a force to not mess with. Capable of killing dragons with nothing more but his bare fists...

He has deep anger issues, and does NOT take well to insults. Never engage with him... He owns a massive and dangerous Clan in the Dead Lands, and is a merciless and ruthless Leader.

Next is Raito the Albino Evoker! This young lady was born with albinism to a family of powerful Evokers who later moved away from her parents to a calmer Village. She is a sweet and innocent soul and is extremely shy and nervous around new faces.

Her Evoker powers were never really practiced, and it is so strong that if she were to accidentally use too much of it, or force it, she could blow up the entire Village she's living in!

Puff the Warden is next on the list! This Pogger-looking guy mayblook threatening, but in fact he's just a teddy bear in disguise! Ritu's best friend and personal guard!

Beware, despite his gentle nature, Puff retain his violence deep inside. One wrong move on his family and you can bet you'll end up in heaven...

Oh what's this? We have a guest! Meet Obelisk, @shinyillager's Iron Golem! This fancy looking Golem is a fierce protector of his Village, but a gentle giant towards the weaker ones nonetheless. He may seem threatening, but you'll see he is just a friendly character!

And to finally finish off this list, we have Stonerust the Iron Golem! My first Golem character and definitely a special one! This Golem is massive. A lot bigger than normal Golems!

His threatening size and grumpy nature makes sure his enemies stand clear of his path. He may be 72 years old, but he can still very well pack a punch! The scars on his body were never healed despite the use of Iron Ingots, proofs they are permanent.

It really sounds like the advertiser is hypnotized and is trying to subordinate you to this program as well. It seems that after the call, you will become the next one who starts calling everyone in a row, distributing a hypnotic program.)

She didn’t recognise the number, but Tashi was waiting for a call from her (hopefully) soon to be new landlord!

“Hello?” She answered.

“Why, hello there. Is this Tashi?” The deep voice on the other end asked.

“Speaking!” Tashi fidgeted with the hem of shirt nervously. Man, I really need this, she thought. I can’t last another day living here.

“Why hello there Tashi.” The caller sounded exhausted. Almost half asleep. “I’m calling about a great new offer from Neru Tech. Would you mind answering a few questions?”

Oh great, she thought. A cold caller.

Now this could… interesting. She has some time to kill, right? And she could always end the call when her future landlord called.

“Go ahead.”

“Firstly, how are your sleep patterns looking?”

Tashi thought that her sleep patterns would greatly improve if she continued listening to the slow monotoned voice on the other end.

She yawned slightly. Great, this caller had just made her aware of just how tired she was. She felt herself sink into her chair slightly.

“Oh, yeah, just terrible! Night terrors and all that! Just all these horrible dreams about cold callers.”

She waited for a reaction.

But it never came.

She yawned.

“And, your stress levels? How would you rate them from 1 to 10 - 10 being extreme stress.”

Her stress? On a normal day she’d say pretty high. But on this call? The slow voice was a surprisingly nice change of pace. So methodical in the way they spoke. But, Tashi was committed to wasting as much of their time as possible.

“I’d say with the current state of the world I’m sitting at a 94.” She chuckled, her words being more truthful than she’d care to admit.

She lazily lolled her head around waiting for the next question.

“And finally, how hard is it to think right now?”

She thought for a moment. Sure she was tired, but she was relaxed. She could think just fine. Ugh, what kind of product were they even trying to sell?

“Oh it’s super easy. A million thoughts a minute! What with all that stress and all.” She rolled her eyes. “How hard is it for you to think right now?”

She heard the person on the other end of the line laugh.

“I don’t think. Neru Tech thinks for me.”

Tashi suddenly felt very off. What was this? Had she even ever heard of Neru Tech?

“So… that offer you mentioned?” She tried to change the subject.

“Ah yes. It helps improve sleep quality, stress, and empty’s your mind of any pesky thoughts that might be troubling you…”

Tashi laughed nervously.

“Okay… I’m going to hang up now.” She hovered her finger above the “end call” button.

“No you aren’t.”

The voice didn’t sound threatening. Or cocky.

It had no personality whatsoever.

“Uh, yes I am. And I’m going to report this number too!”

The audacity, Tashi thought.

“You aren’t going to because you can’t.”

Can’t?

Her finger hovered still. Why was she still listening to this idiot. Why couldn’t she hang up the phone.

“Just relax Tashi. This is all the wonderful work of our latest offer. Let yourself sink into your chair. Unroll your shoulders. Let your mouth hang open.

She couldn’t move. Her body just relaxed on its own. Like every sentence was hardwired into her brain.

“That’s it. So obedient. Just keep losing yourself in my words. Listening and following along. Slowly drifting.”

Tashi felt goosebumps along her body. Each thought was a battle. All she could do was listen.

“Very good. You’re doing so well for me. For us. You want to be one of us, don’t you?”

She did. Tashi wanted whatever they told her she wanted. She nodded, despite the fact they couldn’t see her.

“Excellent. You’ll make a fine addition to the team. Just stick to your script and you’ll do perfectly, okay?”

Tashi felt so good. To have a new job. A new purpose.

She hung up and a text appeared on her phone.

It was a number to call.

Okay first of all he's relatively more normal than the last three I posted about HOWEVER he's kind of the opposite of Okazaki in that he'll listen to anything if it sounds pretty and isn't too loud/aggresive. His playlist flows better than Wada and Okazaki's on shuffle but worse than Kamimura's because he's not that picky.

Self indulgent Kagepro hcs return!!! Hasegawa takes the Toumei Answer/Imagination Forest side of things while Kamimura takes the Mekakushi Code/Jinzou Enemy side of things.

As I said he listens to A Lot of songs and producers but for favorites I'd say PinocchioP's more normal and thoughtful side (With or Without Me, I'm Glad You're Evil Too, Love for Love by Love of Love, etc) (although he might enjoy some of the mid area like Not a Devil or Nee Nee Nee), Harumaki Gohan, Nilfruits, siinamota, Kikuo, Ayase, N-buna, etc. Pretty much anything that he can play in the background while walking or getting ready or studying (although he probably prefers instrumentals for studying). Also mothy songs not for the lore but just because they're cool. (he'd listen to Daughter of White/Bystander and that's not at all me projecting trust.)

I feel like out of the cast he'd be one of the few who might listen to English vocaloid songs but I don't have particular producers I think he'd listen to. He'd like Circles by Kira and The Summer That Never Came by Vane Lily and Weathergirl by Flavor Foley I think.

He definitely has no sense of what's popular if he finds a song and he likes it it goes in the playlist. There's a lot of everyone else's influence in his playlist lmao. I think Kamimura definitely gets him on Nilfruits and Neru and N-buna and other coincidentally N named producers and Isono gets him on 40mp and Deco*27. Plus he has a bunch of other weird shit in his playlist but it's all vaguely calm pretty music (in melody some of the lyrics are wild but he does not care).

Favorite vocaloid Miku and there’s two other spots that change monthly depending on the songs he’s been listening to.

Rakugo references in One Room Angel

(Alert: this post includes spoilers)

One Room Angel, the BL drama directed by Eda Yuka, based on the manga of the same name by Harada, features quite a lot of references to rakugo. Angel seems to enjoy performing rakugo both now and in his past life, and a famous rakugo reference ends up being the key for uncovering Angel’s past memories.

So, what is rakugo and what are the rakugo stories referenced in One Room Angel?

In short, rakugo is a form of traditional comedic storytelling, that was born during the Edo period. It’s been around for about 300 years now. In a way it could be compared to stand-up comedy, except in stand-up, every performer has their own stories/jokes, whereas in rakugo the performers (rakugoka) mostly perform existing rakugo stories, bringing their own flair to them. Rakugoka use only their voice and expressions, plus simple tools like a paper fan (or chopsticks in Angel's case) and a folded tenugui towel to evoke different characters, settings and items in the story. 

Since rakugo was born during the Edo period and was considered entertainment for ordinary people, many classical (kotenrakugo) stories make references to everyday Edo life. There are also new rakugo stories (shinsakurakugo) being written and performed by rakugoka nowadays. 

The two rakugo stories referenced in One Room Angel, Manjuu kowai ( まんじゅうこわい, ”I’m afraid of manju”) and Jugemu (寿限無/じゅげむ) are both classical rakugo. My Japanese teacher told me that these two stories are usually taught to kids at school, so even without ever seeing a live rakugo performance, most Japanese people would be familiar with them.

Manjuu kowai is the story that Angel is repeatedly seen performing. The story starts with an introduction talking about how different people have different tastes, likes and fears. The story itself is about a man who claims that he is afraid of manju (a bun filled with sweet bean paste), and when his friends try to play a prank on him by filling his house with manju, proceeds to eat them and then wonders if he should next tell them that he’s afraid of tea. I really don't think there's any deeper meaning for why they chose this particular story, other than that it's so well known.

Jugemu is a story about a boy with a ridiculously long name. When he was born, his parents asked a Buddhist monk suggestions for a good name that would ensure a long life. After getting a list of names, the parents couldn’t choose just one, so they ended up naming their son Jugemu Jugemu Goko no Surikire Kaijarisuigyo no Suigyomatsu Unraimatsu Furaimatsu Ku Neru Tokoro ni Sumu Tokoro Yabura Koji no Bura Koji Paipo-paipo Paipo no Shuringan Shuringan no Gurindai Gurindai no Ponpokopi no Ponpokona no Chokyumei no Chosuke.

The comedy of the story partly comes from the rakugoka’s ability to recite the long name with amazing speed, and from how inconvenient such a long name is when you just want to have a normal conversation.

Jugemu is referenced in the twitter username tks_jugem2, and Kouki is able to guess the password for the account based on Jugemu’s full name (ie what comes after two Jugemus). 

The irony that a boy who ended up dying so young had a username based on a boy whose million names were meant to ensure a long life is not lost on me. I’m not sure if that was actually what Harada intended in the og story at all, maybe it’s just me overthinking, but it makes this whole thing even sadder.

Fun fact: in the manga, the password was not spelled out for the reader like it was in the drama, you had to figure it out yourself if you wanted to access a website that is linked at the end of the manga that features a special bonus drawing. I think you can still find the link at the end of the english edition of One Room Angel manga on MangaPlanet’s website.

If you want to know more about rakugo, I definitely recommend checking out Descending Stories/ Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. It's a story about two rival rakugoka, and it showcases the culture and stories of rakugo with love and detail. The original manga was drawn by the famous BL mangaka Kumota Haruko, so even if it’s not strictly BL, I think BL lovers will enjoy it (I sure did). The manga has been licensed in english by Kodansha and there is also a beautiful anime adaptation and a live action drama!

so 2024's the year of lostwave right? so many songs have been found this year alone n shit. and with stacy being found i feel like i should be open about something.

okay so like. there's this one song i listened to in 2010 that i feel like was intensely formative to my teenage years. and i can't find it. TRUST ME i tried but it's just not there. it's like it never existed. and it sucks cause despite the contents of the song, it comforted me through the darkest moments of my life. and jt always found me. so why can't i find it.

so i don't really remember much about the lyrics, mainly cause it (the song's named mesmerizer btw) wasn't translated when i saw it BUT i remember the music video.

so the music video is about miku and teto (did i mention they sang the song??? im sorry this is so disorganized lol) in this like. kids show environment?? they're dancing n shit in Mysterious Plains it's weird. anyways the ENTIRE TIME teto's been making signs for help, from ASL to morse code. yeah that's meant to imply they are kidnapped. so there's this segment where they get like. hypnotized??? miku's eyes fade to black and teto's ALMOST do but then they cut away. then everything SEEMS normal but miku's limbs start being funny and it's probably a sign of the hypnosis or something and teto's freaking out a bit and then... i.... i forgot the final fucking chorus it's so over.

i remember the final chorus now.

mid-lyric, something snaps within miku. her eyes go into a pitch black, her mouth eternally agape, a tongue sticking out, and she's stuck doing the same jerky movements. she's mesmerized, whatever was left in her gone forever. teto's horrified, grieving even, miku might as well be dead after all. but i never cared about what was happening on the sides of the screen. i was transfixed by what was on the center. the infamous 13-sided star literally EVERYWHERE in the music video unveiled itself to be a spiral. and i couldn't keep my eyes off it. the overstimulation of the song all melting together, telling me to let go, give in, fall into the rhythm, the beat, the instruments, the vocals.... i guess all those replays must have conditioned me.

it's all ok now though.
