... This is probably why I worry about people perceiving me as a copycat/unimaginative

I think my HK phase was really constructive in that I learned a lot about art and colors and stylization, and it gave me a really good boost in confidence for posting my art online,

But on the other hand drawing exclusively fandom content for so many of my creative formative years has DESTROYED my ability to draw anything original. If I do not have Source Material to reference from I flounder.
