I think you've understood by now that this will be 100 days in different styles. The only common thing is the theme. So here is a nib pen raccoon. I remember when I got my first nib pen. I was so happy. The sound against the paper, the lines that you could feel by touch, the super fine lines you can create with it, and the intense blackness. I copied Ilon Wikland and other illustrators that I admired. Later on, I became the only female inker in the group of artists behind a role-playing game. It was my first job as an inker, and I must say that I used the electric eraser a lot. Without me knowing it, they presented me as “Felicia Fortes, a lover of vibrating electronic devices” on the credit page. So typical for that kind of sexist environment. 🙄 And of course, when I worked as a teacher, this presentation of me was something that role-playing pupils discovered for years to come, and I guess that might also have been something the pupils called me behind my back. Oh well, simple amusements. Pen and ink cameo ring to illustrate another story from Great Grandma Esther’s journal. “After the noon meal, dishes done, kitchen set in order I checked the clock: 1:30. Good, I think I’ll take my little ones and tuck them in for a little rest and I’ll join them. An hour’s rest would feel great for a pregnant mommie. So, after a kiss and hearing them say, “I love you mommie,” and orders not to whisper or giggle I retired to my room. Soon I was fast asleep. I had enjoyed a good hours rest and now it was time to get that coffee brewing. I peeked in the girls’ bedroom. They had gotten up and very quickly gone downstairs and out the door to play. When the men came home with a heaping load of hay they found two blonde-headed little girls sitting in a bunch of hay that had slid off the slings playing “Lady.” Or, as they said to their daddy, “We’s ladies now, we got Mommie’s nice rings on,” and ran to show their daddy they really were nice little ladies. One had my diamond and the other my cameo ring, twiddling them on their fingers in the big mound of hay. I usually took my rings off when I was kneading bread and on wash days and put them in the basket of the coffee server brother Martin had given us for a wedding present and the girls having seen me do this many times quietly brought a chair over and reached up to get them. How tired I must have been not to hear the excited voice of Mae say to Lee, “You ver dis one and I’ll ver the pink one with de lady,” referring to the cameo. Imagine my surprise when Edwin came in with my rings. The little girls following closely behind saying, “I’m sorry Mommie, we won’t do dat again.” I was thankful the rings were not lost, they were one of my treasures. Another hand-drawn stamp for the book about Great Grandma Esther. This stamp was from 1967. It’s heartening to consider all that happened in Great Grandma’s lifetime— she lived through 2 world wars, The Great Depression, the first man in space, landing on the moon, the dawn of the internet, and much much MUCH more. Knowing that helps put our current situation in perspective.
