So I might actually be stupid😂
The other day, I had been rewatching Atypical as one does. That night, I wanted to rewatch Riverdale's Men Of Honor because Toni in that episode was amazing. ANYWAYS, I'm looking at Nick all, "Huh... both him and Nate look similar." I'm thinking there no way, because why would this man play two douches?
But in the end, low and behold, Graham Philips plays both Nate and Nick.
And I only figured this out recently.

Ranking the Top 5 Worst Riverdale characters
Not to be a negative-Nancy on here, but I thought I should include a list of characters I don’t like. This is just about who is a literal killer or dirtbag, this is absolute pointlessness as well. Either way… yeah. It’s my opinion, deal with it. 😂✌️
Honorable mentions:
Alice. She just bothers the shit outta me…
Ethel. The cringe.
Hal. Duh. I just dislike the next few more haha
5. Fangs

I feel so strongly about this character. He’s the only one on this list that isn’t a villain, more just… utterly pointless with WAY too much screentime. A nothing burger character. Why he lasted so long on this show and was promoted to a regular is beyond me. Nothing about him stood out, he was never important to the plot, he was irrelevant and never had any character growth/arc. He and Toni were genuinely horrible parents in S6, I hate what that whole arc did to Toni especially. Tangs is widely regarded as one of the worst ships for a reason. To make matters worse, that was the only reason he was around. And the Tangs/baby Anthony story just made most people dislike him, if they didn’t already. Not ashamed to admit that my love of Choni plays a huge part in my opinion here.
But really, what an empty shell of a character and a complete waste of screentime ugh. 😣
4. Nick St. Clair

He wasn’t a main character, but MAN. What a fucking dirtbag. Archie & Toni both getting their physical and metaphorical hits in against him was gorgeous and stunning and perfection.
3. Penelope Blossom

ABUSIVE. ABUSIVE. ABUSIVE. VILLAINOUS NASTY HAG OF A WENCH.
2. Clifford Blossom

Literally shot his son in the fucking head???
1. Hiram Lodge

The “big bad” multiple times for a 🙌 reason 🙌
So overused to the point where I visibly sighed in annoyance every time I saw his face…

the kiss ask in question (viral post if you're an archie microblogger)
this is an esoteric one sorry to my followers who arent into the riverdale abuse cycles niche. but wrt the hirarchie kiss ask going around i do think its interesting that it goes without saying for everyone that hiram would kiss archie. and like yeah of course because hes obsessed with him and a monster and a loser creep and the whole hirarchie thing is generally a desire to explore archie's feelings of being taken advantage of by someone sexy and horrible. BUT i would like to pose a scenario where at some point, early in their partnership and still reeling from the black hood hurting fred and ms. grundy, archie goes in for a kiss. and hiram does not do anything at all but just knows that about archie for the rest of the show. that aould also be fucked up and interesting right
#oh that's an excruciating answer tbh. love it#really makes every instance of physical touch between them that much more loaded and coded#really enriches the whole carrie episode subplot with hiram pushing boundaries to the point of making fred jealous#it makes archie's choice to accept hiram refusing to ransom him from nick st clair seem even more self-effacing. self-hating even#woof. thanks for that#hirarchie#hiramaissance#(for blacklists)

tuesday again 3/4/2025
my desktop has Kicked It™️🫠 so this is shorter and worse bc it comes from my ailing phone. the tuesdaypost is generally a multi-tab multi-window affair and i completely forgot about the ten-image limit on mobile
listening
i bought this cd months and months ago to fill out the 8 items for $1 sale at my favorite religious thrift shop with the worst vibes, bc i saw the name and thought “oh i like the guy”. i was in fact thinking of nick cave. i would describe this as crunchier than nick cave. also janglier. my most deeply held american trait is that i am a sucker for a song about a road trip.
-
reading
i struck out with Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe bc it made me desperately, desperately miss my maternal grandmother and we simply don’t have time for extra emotion this week.

bad news from the zone tumbleweeds i hated this one too. this is a fourth (!) 1997 printing of the 1992 novel by Claire McNab, Under the Southern Cross. 180p, it’s the same physical quality as all the other Naiad Press softcovers. i did not look up anything about Claire bc copying and pasting shit on my phone is horrendous: however, the frontispiece notes that she lives in LA “for love” and misses Australia. the draw and strong point of this book are the vivid and immersive descriptions of various tourist points down under by someone who really loves the country. it’s an effective travelogue!
The vast, forbidding Australian Outback… the grandeur of Ayers Rock… legendary Alice Springs… the Great Barrier Reef… the primal beauty of Cape Tribulation…
Two women, from different continents, with different values, collide with spectacular results… UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS.
American Lee Paynter has built her small travel agency into an international tour company. Brash, confident, openly lesbian, her great love is her business. Women? They’re to enjoy and let go.
Alexandra Findlay is pursuing a career in Australian tourism with quiet focus and determination, convinced that her career is the best she can hope for in her arid, closeted emotional existence.
Now Alex has been assigned to accompany Lee on the American woman’s visit Down Under, to win Lee’s company over to Australian tourism. Suddenly Alex’s quiet life explodes… And Lee is challenged by a woman unlike any she has ever known.

there were a lot of components i did not enjoy about this book, but the actual construction and hitting what felt like what the next emotional beat in a relationship Should be was there. nobody said anything outlandish and nobody’s crotches were engorged. the first lesbian romance in this project ive read in first person.
i find it extremely funny when someone is in a gorgeous location and having a fucking miserable time. just seething in competitive rage. alex at one point states that her family will never forgive her if she comes out and lee goes “oh? you’re super close with them?” and alex has to go “😠 no 😠”. their relationship is at its best when lee is like “you know you don’t have to live like this?” and kind of mentally drop-kicks alex into enjoying herself. unfortunately these moments are few and far between.
i mostly hated this book bc i hated alex, but it was sort of fun (though not really what i personally read romances for) watching in horrified fascination for 180 pages as she sort of train-wrecked her way through the book. i HATE this kind of sanctimonious unpleasant gay. someone who is extremely pushy about your boundaries (lee doesn’t want anything serious and says so from hour one) but doesn't want to do any work at all on her own boundaries or emotional growth (in only one example, pitches a fucking fit at the airport after lee has been very firm about how she loves to fuck and had a great time with alex but doesn’t want anything serious). this is cutting a little too close to home bc this is nearly all baby (and a lot of grown/post college) western mass queers. i had enough of that in real life and enough roommates like that. i also don't typically enjoy the divorced woman discovering her latent lesbianism storyline. the coming out storyline deserves its own graf.
this book does a good job of portraying alex as believably prickly for her own reasons, and not just out of contrariness or to fit a trope. she was very badly scared by watching her lover get fired and her almost fired at her post divorce job! that makes sense! i wish the arguments for and against coming out that she comes up with for herself rang less true today! however, she doesn’t come out in the book as a big emotional gesture to join lee in scary freedom, she comes out to stop her boss hitting on her and to prevent her coworker from blackmailing her. her coming out is such a significant point of tension and happens with such a fizzle! I think I would be giving the book too much credit to agree and say that sometimes coming out isn't a big deal and is kind of a fizzle, be she is constantly thinking about how her first lover was fired for being a lesbian. it can happen to you!!!

there is a very contrived, unnatural ending that requires lee to betray all her most deeply held relationship beliefs/make a lot of bad decisions and a deus ex concussion for alex. not that i expect every book to be a Victorian morality fable, but i didn’t want her to have a happy ending that felt so unearned. I didn’t want her to be rewarded for being such a pushy bitch while doing zero work on herself!
at least the sex scenes were some of the less awful ones ive read in this project

making
i am a firm believer that anything worth knitting is worth knitting well and as heirloom quality as you can make it, bc it takes the same amount of time to knit something in garbage single ply that will fall apart in one wash as it does to knit something in yarn that’s actually good. however, sometimes you need to produce an acrylic baby blanket bc a baby’s one job (as i have previously stated in this series) is to produce fluids and crumbs, and you love their parents and want to make their lives easier without adding a wool blanket to the mix.
this baby blanket is completed, only two years late. i did not measure this or even really unscrumple it before throwing it directly in the warsh. nineteen repeats across and twelve up of the tumbling blocks baby blanket, applied icord edging on the short edges which took six! total! hours! to apply. i think this yarn is bernat softee in mint? some sort of oil byproduct. phil is on my lap i cant find the band to check. i got very tired of this one and its 200 stitches across and am glad to see it out the door and to the tender graces of the toddler recipient. next on the docket is some socks for a grown person. i hope i still remember how to make socks.

Hello, Betty. This is the Black Hood speaking. Tonight was all about you. [What I want is] the same as you: to set Riverdale on the righteous path again. To cleanse it of sinners. Isn't that what you want? [Not by killing people.] Only the ones who deserve it. People like… your sister. I know all about the sin she carries in her womb. I also know she's at a farm, two hours North. If you try to warn her, I'll know. If you tell the police we've spoken or your mystery-loving boyfriend I'll carve her like a Jack O'Lantern. Don't you deny me, Betty. […] Your mother's at work. I know, I'm looking at them through a nice, big picture window. She's a thorn in both of our sides, your mother. We can't have her looming over us. Check your email. Publish what I've sent. And then I'll know that you're loyal. You do this for me, and then you get to ask me a question. And I have to answer it. You have until tomorrow night. […] How does it feel, Betty? Knocking your mother of her high horse? What's your question? And it can't be my name. [The face under the hood… Would I recognize it?] Yes. Do you feel closer to me now? I do. I feel as if we're friends. But I'm selfish, Betty. I don't like sharing you with other people. So I need you to cut them out of your life, or I will, my way. Let's start with that daughter of a philanderer, and an embezzler, complicit in her father's crimes… Oh, Betty, you don't really believe that [Veronica is innocent]. […] [What will make you stop?] You. As long as you continue showing me your devotion. Jughead. The son of a Serpent. He's not worthy of your love. Cut him out of your life… Or I will. […] There's one piece of unfinished business. The fact that you've been telling Archie about our chats. Betty, I've been watching you… You broke the rules, Betty, and now your sister will pay. [Please don't hurt her.] Then give me another name. Right now. If you want to save your sister, give me another name. The name of someone guilty. Come on, Betty. One little name. I'll kill your sister. And your mother and your father, and everyone you hold dear. [Nick St. Clair. He's staying at the Five Seasons.] I told you we were the same.

The Chaser and the Chasee, Accept No Substitutes

Newspapers are running stories on how the Green Lantern and Spider-Man are running stories about drugs -- Green Lantern's sidekick is a junkie! We still have to wait for the next decade for "Biff! Bam! Pow! Comics are Not Just For Kids Anymore!", but the comics for kids are tackling the real world now. And in tone this 1971 story where... Betty Cooper is running interference for Veronica against a... er, date rapist... is not matching the earnestness of, oh, Mr. Lodge trailing Veronica's date with a hippy before learning we're all brothers under the skin. Or Archie still believing in Betty despite the note that she seems to have left telling everyone that she ran off to join a hippy commune. But I do still get that sense of a "this isn't your older siblings' Archie!"
And the boys are oblivious, while the girls take an extra step to keep mace in ready reach or be able to get your keys in proper weapon position.
1999 and Archie, writer Kathleen Webb, is giving the young reader the textbook signs of an abusive controlling relationship. And this does read as though she wants to lay down some specific markers.

Sign of the times, or precise moment. The "Swing Revival" is in full flourish. I guess we may as well name the boy the recurrent "bad boy" name for Archie of Nick St. Clair -- though Scott Wunderbaud here seems more carefully constructed for that "bad boy should stay away from" role.

i kind of think riverdale shouldn’t have brought nick st. clair back two seasons later so they could have an episode where they sexually assault him to teach him a lesson about sexual assault and have our main characters giggle and watch the recorded sexual assault later i kind of think that wasn’t handled well

what if hiram and archie but they're both girls
what if we were hiram and archie . and we were both girls
interesting premise, anon! it could go lots of different ways imo. really depends on the configuration. see one of the things that really creates the unique dynamic of hiram/archie is the fact that it’s built on the very patriarchal patterns of father-son relationships and ALSO the mafia/mob/cartel whatever (crime rings, essentially, are a male business.)
(there is also the question of race, but.)
hiram is brought into the mob the same way that archie is turned into a capo in season 2. i think before anything else, that is what shapes their dynamic that hiram does Wrong and archie Tries to Do Right. that’s the thing that shapes the entirety of season 2, right? archie wants to Do Right (protect fred) -> hiram offers him a way to do that by Doing Wrong (suggesting he start a vigilante group). archie then gets sucked into hiram’s world, with the lure of what i would call very male narrative motivations (this doesn’t mean these apply to men alone, but in fiction, are often seen as inherent traits for a male character to have) such protectiveness - over fred and veronica, power - over those who would seek to hurt fred and veronica. there was a point somewhere in the thousands of meta posts i’ve devoured in the last two days that fred getting shot makes him weak in archie’s eyes, and that hiram’s traditionally “powerful” persona becomes very attractive to him in the time following the fred incident.
have you ever heard of the theory of homosociality, anon?

the thing about the mafia, like i said before, is that it is a predominantly male business. the women, like hermione often cites in s2 to veronica, are supposed to stand behind their man as he makes his moves. the issue with hiram is the same issue that logan roy had in succession, which is that he had no acceptable male heir, so he does, again, what logan roy did: used his idiot son-in-law as a conduit for power. (idiot here used affectionately for archie, derogatory for tom wambsgans) what’s interesting to me is that hiram obviously prides himself on veronica having turned out to be such a cunning, self-sufficient young woman - and while this frustrates him as well, i have to believe that as some point he must’ve considered handing his empire over to her. but the fact remains that ultimately the mafia is a male business, and archie-and-veronica would’ve been a really odd, controlling couple because veronica would be running everything from behind archie’s stature. she does so, even, with nick st. clair and the speakeasy/casino side hustle in s2. she still has to rely on a man to pull the strings.
you know the riverdale genre theory? because of the way that hiram’s entire character is constructed around the mafia, and by extension, so is veronica’s relationship with archie, i think a lot of archie and hiram’s relationship has to specifically with their gender. think about it - none of the women on riverdale have such an intense relationship with the girls on the show who aren’t their daughters. even though alice HATES hermione and veronica, she doesn’t do anything more than forbid betty from being friends with veronica. mary doesn’t really interact with veronica the same way that hiram does with archie. gladys never even comes into meaningful contact with betty - for that matter, neither does hermione. all the girls have very complex minefield-esque relationships with their mothers, but none of the rivermoms ever reach out to the other daughters.
i would say on some level archie and hiram’s relationship cannot be replicated if they were female; say, for example, that hiram were to be woman, and still married to hermione; a lesbian mob boss would always be fighting her way into again, what is predominantly a male space. i don’t think she would’ve had the time to groom female!archie the same way into becoming her capo, because it wouldn’t supplement her position in the mafia to have more female capos. i believe if hiram were female, also, and veronica was still her daughter, there would be no focus on female archie (veronica’s gf in this scenario) and instead, veronica would have a very fraught, tense relationship with hiram instead, because hiram would be actively trying to groom her to take over the empire (?) instead of spoiling her and treating her as someone who would eventually marry into a different position of power. veronica would then fight hiram on all these things, because her girlfriend archie would be protesting against all the evil things that fem!hiram is doing, because fem!archie would be able to see it from the outside of the relationship. riverdale loves a mother-daughter struggle.
if, say, instead, this was a genderswap situation, where hermione is male and hiram is female, and veronica is male and archie is female, i believe nothing would really come of it either. again, fem!archie would be trying to convince veronica that male!hermione is evil, but male veronica would’ve been indoctrinated a long time ago. hiram being female and archie being female completely sap all the tension from their relationship, because all of a sudden fem!hiram would be using her cunning to ensure male!hermione stayed on top of everything, and fem!archie would be busy trying to ensure male!veronica wouldn’t succumb to the dark side. they would simply never interact! riverdale wouldn’t put them in the same room, even. it is possible i just lack imagination; but i just think the layers of repression and violence that form archie and hiram just don’t click in the same way if they were women. i don’t know.
(i do think, though, that fem!hiram would be a very possessive boymom over male!veronica. perhaps there’s something there? fem!hiram beefing with fem!archie over male!veronica’s attention? even so, riverdale, for all its female characters, doesn’t really do non-familial intergenerational interactions all that much. i have a jughead-meta reason for why this is, but that’s a story for a different time.)

Alright! Riverdale season 2 rewatch is DONE!
Here are some of my thoughts:
This whole season is sooooo teen campy horror and I’m obsessed. I prefer this season over S1 for sure.
TONI FCKING TOPAZ. MY BEST GIRLYYYY. 🥹
The Black Hood is actually such a good villain idc
LOOK. I love FP, but he DID clean up the Blossom’s crime scene, he WAS involved. Whether he was blackmailed or not, he did it. So Betty blackmailing Cheryl by threatening to release the video of Jason’s murder is… very fucked up.
Speaking of Betty… she lowkey annoys me several times throughout this season. She’s such a bad friend 😂
I may be in the minority, but I LOVE all the Serpent drama stuff
Jughead is my extra-brooding broody emo boy this season. Complete with a dramatic ass Bughead breakup lol.
The scene where Fred imagines Archie’s graduation day and says “I didn’t think I’d live to see this day” actually made me cry because Luke Perry passed away before S4 so Fred really didn’t get to see the day…
CHONI CHONI CHONI. Their first meeting, the “you’re sensational” scene at Pop’s, Toni leading the charge to save her, Cheryl (and Jughead) saving Toni from the Ghoulies. Choni’s FIRST KISS. Ughhhh I love my babies so much. 🥰
I was wrong in my S1 post, Alice Cooper is still fcking insufferable this season.
Archie starting a team of teen vigilantes to hunt a serial killer lmfao
Nick St. Clair deserved JAIL. God.
The fact that Kevin has known about the Sisters of Quiet Mercy being an illegal conversion camp for some time and has never done or said anything before, while hooking up with boys from there and being the SON of the sheriff is… concerning.
And then the gang literally does nothing after either
CHONI
VARCHIE. Her being right by his side after Fred was shot, Archie beating the shit out of Nick for hurting her. Their “I LOVE YOU’S”, which was hard for Veronica and caused some tension, but they worked through and came out stronger for it! Dealing with Hiram’s shit lol.
Cheryl Blossom deserved a stint on CW’s Arrow!
Having the Serpent/Ghoulie war off screen was not it… like… that was such a huge point and we saw none of it
Hiram Lodge was a GREAT villain, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record, he was just sooo overused.
Veronica girlbossing & getting ownership of Pop’s because she knows how much it means to people. My girl :’)
FP retiring, making Jughead king, and then Jughead’s first act being inducting Cheryl into the Serpents? Beautiful symmetry that mirrors his own start with the Serpents at the end of S1.
Oh, did I mention CHONI?
The cliffhanger being Archie arrested right after winning the student body election… like goddamn.
I love this fcking season, and idc what anyone else says! It’s better than S1! 💋
