‘90s Vets DEAR DECEASD Run “Traffic” Ahead of Ripple Music Full-Length

Cali stoner metal vets DEAR DECEASED stretch back into those exciting experimental days of the early 1990s, when they band broke away from a stereotypical corporate sound and got, well, grungy.. Everything got heavier, it seemed, and much, much more down to earth.

Active in the San Jose area, Dear Deceased members went on to be involved in influential acts of the day. George Rice (rhythm guitar, bass) was the original bassist for High on Fire, for example, and Mitchell French (bass) fronted Operator Generator. Rounding out the group: the husky vocals of Erik Kliever, commanding guitarist Ryan Landes, and bulwark drumming from Chris Musgrave.

Recently, the group announced the special reissue of their early material as part of Ripple Music’s Beneath The Desert Floor vinyl series. The band's forthcoming full-length is a brawny collection of 8 tracks, a mix of grunge, blues, and some thumping low end. It captures the spirit of an era, with a sound that's big, sweeping, and audacious, as you'll hear from the lumbering new single we're premiering today, opening number "Traffic."

Look for 'Beneath the Desert Floor: Chapter 7 - Dear Deceased' (2024) on Ripple Music, with the album dropping December 9th (pre-order here). A must for fans of Nirvana, Godsmack, Temple of the Dog, and Core-era Stone Temple Pilots.

SOME BUZZ

Californian 90s stoner metal veterans DEAR DECEASED (with former High On Fire, Operator Generator members) are set to issue their early recordings for the first time on vinyl and digital this December 9th, as part of Ripple Music's "Beneath The Desert Floor" special series.

Dear Deceased formed in San Jose, CA, in 1990. Their heavy, rhythmic sound and complex arrangements took form out of the ashes bands whose members were influenced by everything from West Coast crossover thrash to post-punk, glam rock, industrial, grunge, British heavy metal and especially, Black Sabbath.

The material flowed from the quartet, but they lacked a frontman. So the band continued to play instrumentally until one pivotal show when the audience got a surprise. Nobody in the crowd knew Dear Deceased had invited a vocalist to join them onstage to have a go at singing live. Emerging from the audience, clutching the mic, the unknown singer belted out a song. His soaring vocals meshed perfectly with the band's angular riffs and pummeling rhythm section. They now had their vocalist.

Beneath the Desert Floor: Chapter 7 - Dear Deceased by Dear Deceased

With the lineup complete, Dear Deceased immediately booked a recording session at House of Faith, the Bay Area studio known for punk and metal run by the masterful Bart Thurber. Initially distributed as cassettes, these recordings soon became coveted cult items among fans. Before long, the band was selling out shows with their intense, live performances. Dear Deceased’s remarkable sound soon caught the attention of record labels. Yet despite the interest, the band dissolved before a label deal could materialize. Lacking the widespread distribution of the pre-streaming era, the music faded into relative obscurity.

Fast forward to years later, when Thurber came across the master tape in his archives. This find led to a revival of Dear Deceased's music, with Ripple Music stepping in to give the songs a proper release. A new rendition of the band’s art, has been re-drawn by long-time friend Rob Klem in keeping with the band's original vision and includes an insert with archival photos by Brandy Bennet Jordan.

"Dear Deceased" is the seventh chapter of Californian music label Ripple Music's "Beneath The Desert Floor" series, which unearths long-lost treasures from the golden days of stoner and desert rock, such as releases from Fireball Ministry, The Awesome Machine, Glitter Wizard, Witch White Canyon, Rollerball and the Sabians.

He couldn't fucking believe it, he'd left the Wayne Manor because he had been told you'd be there, he knew it was cowardly, but how the fuck was he supposed to face you after screwing you - his best friend of four years - in his teenage bedroom at the manor and then waking up alone? He knew you might've stayed if you didn't have work, but he had no clue. He left to get away from the awkwarness you don't seem to feel seeing him at the manor, and here you are, in his favourite shirt, the faded Nirvana album cover on the fabric and the blood stain on the bottom left part of the hem giving it away as his. You'd tied it into a crop top, the same as you did with most of the shirts you wore, and you were wearing the dark red denim shorts he'd given you for your birthday after seeing you consider buying them yourself and changing your mind.

He considering leaving now and getting his crap food and exsessive amount of energy drinks from the store only eight minutes further away from his shit apartment with the crap locks and overused fire escape, but he already has his things in his hands, and you aren't looking around, just waiting in line as someone tries to haggle the price of cigarettes because he's one of Penguins Goons.

His phone vibrates in his pocket and he digs it out of his (unsurprisingly) red hoodie.

He smiles, amused. Fuck it.

"How long you been waiting, trouble?" he muses, leaning down slightly to murmur into your ear. You startle, turning and flushing pink. "Jase! How do you do that?" you huff, glancing down at your phone in your hand, and the now liked message displayed on the screen.

"Practice. Want me to ask Bart if you can pay now?" he offers, his crap held in one arm as his other hand splays along her lower back, not waiting for an answer. "Hey Bart, can we get outta here now or?" Jason calls out, leading you past the goon. The store owner grins at you both, canceling the thugs perchase and scanning both of your things as Jason gently pries them out of your arms and onto the counter with his things.

"Oi! Fuck you think you're doing-" Jason turns to the thug, his usual glare you haven't seen directed at you in over a year burning into the man. You glance between them, Jasons 6'0 stature, cold glare, and threatening silence making the shorter man pale slightly and turn away, stalking through the aisles, pretending to browse.

The 'theives will be shot' handmade sign on the counter makes Jason smirk a little, knowing exactly when that sign was placed, it helped that he - red hood - gave Bart the gun he threatens theives with, not that it loads anymore.

"Jason, i'm not letting you pay for my things" you begin to argue, Jason smiles at you, and Bart grins "Yes you are, you always lose this argument, just let the man pay" Barty comments and you begin to argue. "That's no-" you're cut off by Jason wrapping his arms around your shoulders, his hand covering your mouth.

"Think of the snacks, and the extra snacks you could get later with the money you aren't spending now, hm? What about that vending machine by your lecture hall you always grab something from? You could get more things so you dont have to be embarrassed when I drop by some leftovers for you" he goads, and you groan, giving in as you lean back against him.

He pays and Bart hands you both of your things in a single bag, which Jason takes, along with your hand as you leave the store together. "Mine?" he offers, and you hum.

"Yeah, but stop sneaking up on me like that! We've talked about this"

"I remember, and still.. no promises."

"God, you're a dick sometimes"

"I'm not god, take a good look if you need to remember, I know its hard to tell the difference - i'm that hot, but you'll be able to tell"

You both laugh.

"Shut up"

"No. Give me my shirt back"

"No"

Dick rolls his eyes, watching you lean into Jasons side as he tosses his arm over your shoulders. So much for Bruce wondering where Jason had fucked off to.

I think it’d be funny if Dick and Jason, due to wearing bright yellow capes on the job for years, are capable of stealth to a frankly unhinged degree. They barely have to try anymore it’s so second nature. Dick can just completely disappear while in the loudest neon clothes imaginable. Jason is constantly startling people who don’t understand how they missed a guy the size of a fridge standing right there. Bruce is extremely grateful for his unbreakable poker face because they have both startled him by accident and would never ever let him live it down if they knew.

Songs I Like, #2: Gryffin - MAGIC (ft. babyidontlikeyou)

Has the amazing energy of the old Gryffin (no offense to his most recent album). Apparently he played it at his Red Rocks show in October, which I definitely would've tried to be at if not for the wonderful birth of my daughter.

I can't wait until she can really enjoy music. I wonder what her relationship with it will be like, if songs alone can make her feel the whole spectrum of human emotion, from tears to euphoria. Once at Coachella I was vibing *intensely* to Epik High's great set, and a friend of a friend asked if I was rolling. But I wasn't under the influence of anything.

Somehow music can activate my brain such that I feel like every nerve ending is firing off at once into some sort of hypersonic nirvana. It almost does feel like a drug at times, the way I can just lie in bed, listen to music, and feel euphoria for hours. When I read it that does sound troublingly like addict behavior.

Anyway, this song makes me feel a form of euphoria. Today I listened to it on the BART ride to work, and the bass came in *right* as the door to my stop opened. I almost flew out the train and up the stairs. What a feeling.

I do hope Claire has that same embrace. She does react quite strongly to music even at 5-months-old, with Beyoncé's "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" having an amazing soothing influence on her. That song has honestly saved our life. There have been dozens of times already when she is crying, we play that song, and she stops crying within seconds.

Whether in her car seat, having boogers aspirated out of her nose, or having medicine syringed into her mouth, Beyoncé always saves us. We honestly owe her so much; I think we would have lost our sanity a long time ago without that song.

The only other song that works is the NARUTO Main Theme, oddly enough (which only works when TEXAS HOLD 'EM doesn't work).

I think this bodes well for her relationship with music. I can't wait until she, Iona, and I can all dance together. It'll be magic.
