SUMMARY: Parker takes on the job Metzli listed online. The two barely talk, but find each other's demeanor refreshing.

WARNINGS: None

Hope came and went in waves, like it was taunting the vampire. The building hunger only worsened the irrational swaying of Metzli��s mind. Stomach and throat constricted painfully, no amount of steady breathing helping to quell the pain. It’d only been days but the slow, spiraling disconnect from their mind made Metzli feel like it’d been weeks.

The smell of an approaching human was captivating enough to rip their attention away from the pangs. A growl escaped them, feral and beastly as they inhaled deeply. One breath quickly turned into three, inevitably evolving into something akin to a dog sniffing out its prey. Metzli slammed their body into the door, metal creaking under the pressure of their attack. They inhaled, deep and prolonged, punching the door as if it would hurry the delivery. All that blood in the crate. They could smell it.

“Leave the box in front of the door!” They hissed, voice gravelly and deep. “Leave it and then turn around!” There was no room for pleasantries. Metzli wanted to eat, and if the delivery man wasn’t careful, he’d get a bite taken out of him, and that was the last thing Metzli wanted. They were trying to fight the monster within, prevent it from escaping. It was thrashing against the cage, bending the metal to its will. It was only a matter of time until they attacked without a meal.

“You will leave after you drop the box.”

Day 13.

Don’t ask questions. Take the delivery from point a to point b and you’ll be compensated. While it was difficult for Parker to keep from asking questions before he learned of the true nature of whatever task he was supposed to carry out, he also acknowledged that this individual he’d spoken to seemed similar in a way. He needed a distraction, not to mention he’d been effectively conned out of some of his money by someone who wasn’t what she said she was; at the time, he remembered almost breaking the bones in his hand from clenching it so hard at the revelation. This wasn’t then though, and it had passed. Parker wasn’t usually one for dwelling on things, even if he wanted to and he was… uncomfortable with how recent events had tended to linger in his mind, retreading the steps, wondering what went wrong and why he reacted the way that he did when it all felt so foreign and wrong to him. He could still hear the nix pleading in his head, he could hear Felix’s anger, he could hear the alleys and the tones and the sound of flesh being ground by a fist blinded with fury. He was scattered, unfocused, compromised emotionally and physically. He felt the sleepless nights clinging to his frame, resting under his eyes. He hated this. The Warden pulled the box of what he presumed was either a corpse or some variant of illegal substance from the back of his car and he trudged over to the door of what appeared to be a cement… shack? It was above the marshy ground so Parker didn’t want to call it a bunker. Tired blue eyes danced over the humidity-slicked exterior as whatever was hiding on the inside banged on the metal. He heard chains. Whatever was in there seemed to have little in common with the advanced, yet still human man that stood on the other side of the barrier. It wasn’t his business, and yet. Parker wordlessly set the box down just in front of the creaking metal door, inwardly thankful that his wasn’t nearly as unpleasant to listen to and he turned before taking a few steps away from the door. “I’m not leaving until you get your delivery.” He replied bluntly, simply, though he couldn’t be sure if it was curiosity that kept him or the fact that whoever was on the other side of the door could’ve lied about not having received the delivery, thus wasting his time.

The resistance was met with a powerful fist to the door, the metal bending with an imprint of the vampire’s fist. Metzli wasn’t normally so emotional, and the display only fed into their anger, teeth bared in display accompanied with a growl. “Fine.” Metzli complied, beginning the process of unlocking all of the locks. They were down to the last two when they paused, emotional swelling dangerously in their chest. Their chains rattled and dragged across the concrete floor as they sunk into themself.

What was happening to them?

All the fighting for control and they felt like they had even less than when they started. Breathe. Metzli did, inhaling with a stutter, gasping helplessly. The ants that were quickly marching around their skin finally began to settle, and they swallowed, wiping away the sweat from the effort. “Okay…con calma.” They muttered to themself as they strode back to the door and creaked it open. Whoever the man was, Metzli had never seen him before, and they didn’t care to know him past their business.

The chains rattled behind them, ending with a clang from reaching their end. With a sigh, Metzli hooked their free foot around the box and slid it into the doorway. “Okay. It is done. Now leave.” Red eyes glared threateningly, serving as a silent warning. Don’t come any closer. You’ll be bitten.

The door was unlocked, from top to bottom, a mallet on a xylophone of metal scrapes and clinks. Then it was opened as Parker had his back turned, naturally feeling the same mallet creep up his spine, making the hair on the back of his neck stand on end in a primal response that no amount of control could seem to keep smothered. As far as he knew, this was the last time he was going to see the beautiful, swampy Mossthorn Bog so he took to gazing around with a rather gentle expression, an expression that he shared with no one but his mother. That was part of the problem though, wasn’t it. Parker knew he needed to work on his approach and he was sure his ‘bedside manner’ could use some work as well but all his words about being gentle, not wanting to hurt anyone, seemed to fly by the wayside in the heat of the moment, in the grips of obsession. …He didn’t want to think about it. ‘You’re very distracted today, my son.’ He blinked his mother’s voice out of his head and as he heard the crate being pushed or pulled along the ground, presumably being lulled into the possession of whatever was on the other side of the door, Parker turned slowly to see what it was with his own eyes. Dangerous red met with steely blue, an exchange of exhaustion and for a moment, a fleeting moment, Parker felt as though he were looking into a mirror.

Did he dare? “Did your original delivery man perish?” He asked before following the question up with his signature “What are you?”

Once the blood was inside, the door began to close until a new set of questions were presented. Metzli had no idea what happened to the man they’d designated for their deliveries. Only that he hadn’t shown up as usual. Part of the instructions were to always be punctual, to stick to the schedule Metzli gave them every week. So, no, they weren’t sure if the original delivery man had perished, but they had a feeling that may be the correct deduction. In a town like Wicked’s Rest, death was reasonable enough. As was the inference that the new delivery man may not be all that human, or at least a purveyor of the supernatural.

He asked what Metzli was. Not…who.

They left the door ajar, the dim bulb behind them obscuring any of their features and only presenting a tall and lanky silhouette. “I do not know what happened.” They managed to return to their dry and even tone. Having the blood in their presence calmed them down because they knew they wouldn’t starve, or go feral. It was easy to remain calm again. “He missed the delivery a few days ago, which was not like him.” Metzli had made sure of that. Their instructions were clear.

“What I am is no business of yours.” Their robotic tone had a bite, telling the man to back off the subject and from the door. “I am…just a monster.” Defeat began to slip off their tongue, and they sighed, opening the door further to reveal the makings of Metzli’s self-made prison. The essentials only, comfort not made for them. It was home, and if always had been. A memory furnishing that small space.

The door was left open, Parker’s blue eyes seeing a tall figure who appeared to be missing half an arm standing in the space. Frustratingly taller than him. The thought curled his lip ever-so-slightly with jealousy, a piece of flashpaper that inflamed his mind but was gone shortly after it had arrived. So whoever and whatever it was, having since decided to sound like a human once more now that their package had arrived, didn’t know what happened to their delivery person. Which seemed sort of dangerous considering how they were dramatically banging on the door shortly before. Parker guessed either vampire or zombie - he had astonishingly little experience with both of them, predictably, but from what his father had to say about them, they were prone to… He inhaled, unable to repeat what exactly his father had said in his head but the rough equivalent was ‘loss of their minds’ when they had gone so long without feeding on blood or brains, respectively. A primal state that was present when the brain was dead, driven only by the desire to consume. They didn’t answer and told him it was none of their business before shortly following up with ‘just a monster’. The door opened a little wider and the Warden cast a studious gaze into what he could see of the room, which seemed decidedly more like a jail cell. “I’ve been called that before, too.” Parker mused aloud, his own tone flat, surprisingly matching theirs well enough though he was bereft of any strong tonal indicators; he wasn’t here to judge their isolation or even what was in the crate. He wasn’t lying or attempting to form a connection between the two, either; it was a simple fact. Many of his specimens had called him that. It wasn’t a title he preferred but he had long since gotten accustomed to it. He placed his hands on his thick leather belt absently and gave the ‘monster’ another stare. “I can replace your delivery guy.” He offered. “I too value punctuality. Two thousand dollars is superfluous though.” Parker tilted his head slightly. “Do you have a lower price you’d find preferable?” He asked before motioning to his car. “I won’t keep you much longer. Just the last question and I’ll leave you to your meal.”

Metzli took a deep gulp of air at the confession, the mutual experience of being called a monster. It was a term others had coined for him, not one he’d given himself. He smelled human, with plenty of metal and bitter-smelling solutions in what appeared to be a utility belt. A hunter, perhaps? Or maybe just a cautious hiker who’s lived in Wicked’s Rest enough to know that he needed to be prepared for anything? Regardless, Metzli noticed they weren’t exactly being sensed, and therefore they weren’t of particular interest to the man in regards to a hunt.

“Two thousand is what I pay him and it is something I do not mind. Money means nothing to me.” With a wave of their hand, Metzli brushed off the stranger and ripped into the crate easily. Like it was a piece of paper. “If that is all, then go.” They pulled out a few bags from the ice box, transferring them into the small fridge by the bed. “I appreciate you doing this.” For a moment, Metzli paused what they were doing to approach the door, memorizing the man’s face and scent.

“Same time next week then, okay? The process will be the same as before and will always be this way.” Their face was devoid of emotion, their preferred state of being. For now, the monster was sated, and as long as their new delivery man didn’t meet whatever demise as the other, it would stay that way. “Okay. Goodbye.” Without another word, Metzli shut the door, locking it completely so they could focus back onto their food. There were a few meals that were long overdue.

“It has to be done.” Parker nodded once in acknowledgment of the appreciation. He was no slayer, but he also was no idiot. ‘Doesn’t take two brain cells to rub together to be a slayer or a ranger’, he recalled. The undead and shifters, as he was quickly becoming aware from first-hand experience, were brutish with their strength and fell back on instinct. They weren’t like the fae, with their word games and tricks. They were animals that needed to be struck down when they reached a point of seemingly no return. The nonhuman was restrained but while Parker couldn’t be sure about the effectiveness of the restraints, he also understood that without his acting as a delivery man, beneath him as it seemed, he really didn’t want himself or anyone else to deal with a rabid animal on the loose.

“Same time next week.” He confirmed, not turning down the offer of two thousand dollars for what he considered an incredibly easy job. Parker was used to transporting much more valuable (at least, in his mind) specimens, though it was nice to see confirmation of his assumption that the figure was a vampire. He also assumed that their relationship was neutral; not that he was particularly trying but the way they spoke was just similar enough to him that he found it rather refreshing internally. ‘Parker has a friend and it’s NOT a bug??’ Walker playfully teased him. It wasn’t the case. Parker had no friends, he’d come to that realization a long time ago. This was a mutual agreement between two monsters, evidently, and with the arrangement in his head and a nice, succinct farewell from the nameless, one-armed vampire, the Warden turned as the door was shutting and he went back to his car. Go to MuertArte, speak with Rachel. Repeat the process next week at the same time. He had a schedule. This was preferable.

The man's comment about her clothes made her smile, it was good to find a polite person.

—Thank you for your kind words. —the woman was leaning against the door frame, looking in the window's direction, she crossed her arms and nostalgia was gently touching her heart. —You know, I am admired by many people, I know I am precious to many citizens. That makes me happy, to know people rely on me. It is just...that I would love to have some people to have tea with, maybe explore outside the walls, sneak into human events, I don't know.

Lilith seemed happy, happier than before, no one besides the dukes and the king has talked to her like an equal, Kauze seemed a very good person, she still did not trust him completely, but in a social way, this was the closest she has been to make a new friend. She snapped her fingers and a trail of smoke brought him a cupcake.

—Do you want some? —asked with a kind smile on her face.

The fact that in his universe there were demons and angels was quite interesting, or at least that's what his words suggested. Were they the same as the angels from the Nix? The expression he used to describe them, sounded casual, too casual.

—The angels here are the worst, they think they are above everything and will do anything to maintain that idea. They would not hesitate if they had to go against they're own people. Obviously, our king says we have to be careful with this kind of thoughts, he says it is not the same an angel from a noble position than a homeless angel. Our king believes that no matter the species, there is always good and bad people, but because of the different cultures, people are used to judge and separate.

The vampire duchess approached him to look at the drawing, her hands were behind her back, she seemed relieved and relaxed. Lilith chuckled a little, she had seen with her own eyes the results of wars, culture differences and misunderstandings, why did she chuckle then? He was about to let him know.

—Hey, I am glad that you fell right in front of our gates, this planet is a chaos. You could have been used as a punishing bag by the humans, other countries would not have the enough power to give you the right sense of safety, the least bad thing the angels would have done to you would have been to put you in a zoo. Here you are free to build a life in the most advanced and safety kingdom on Earth, maybe some day you could even go back to your universe, but I find more probable that you end up liking it here.

Kauze didn't have many memories of his life free from the angels and Michael, as he ended up trapped in this universe when he was only 7 years old, an incorrectly used power sent him to Nix, where he was found by the angels, but they looked more like monsters than pure beings.

Since he was here, his life was hell, he was imprisoned for being a demon, and soon after he was "adopted" by the ruler of the angels, Michael, which seemed to be the least worse, after all, now he would be locked in a room or in a house, not in a dirty cell starving and cold.

But that became completely exhausting, after all, he only had Michael to talk or interact with, and he wasn't the nicest person in the world for that, Kauze just wanted to go back to his universe and try to start his life over.

Which seemed completely impossible to him, as he seemed to be completely stuck with Michael.

But that changed one day, with a somewhat dangerous proposal, but with a reward that he dreamed of so much, returning to his universe and finally leaving that place.

Being a spy sounded crazy since he had no intention of talking to anyone, but if his homecoming was at stake, he had to.

Walking through that scary forest, he finally arrived at the gates of the Kingdom of Blood, it seemed that now he had to put Michael's plan into action.

— Uhg... Wow, how did I get here? I was training my powers and I ended up in this strange forest and right behind this giant gate, how can I get back to the home?

He says out loud, as if to get someone's attention, if he's going to enter this realm, let it be legally so he doesn't have future problems.

The angel species, probably the most overrated, known for being the glorious descendants of the great Goddess of creation. However, the angel’s politic became a strong aspect of their culture, being a bunch of selfish, hypocrites and cruel people of power, building their twisted government from a twisted religion. Poor Kauze was found by the wrong people, and ended up being practically the pet of the leader of the most cruel and despicable angel race. The Creed Angels, born with colorful wings but dying them white to show their commitment with the religion.

Michael, the council of the creeds, he took Kauze and work hard through many years to make him dependent. He didn’t even train him to control his powers, the angel wouldn’t take the risk of a rebellion. One day, with the sunrise, Kauze was sent from the sky with a beam of light, if he could complete this mission, the angels would finally defeat the vampires.

As soon as he approached the gates, they were opened for him, after all, this kingdom was open for tourists. Beyond the gates, there was a guard waiting for him with papers on his hands.

Almost there.

Nix grasps the piece of pale tile in their left hand and grips the compound nippers in their right with just enough pressure. A cracking sound and a small square falls, muffled, onto a folded towel.

They roll the piece in the towel, wiping off any excess debris before picking it up to look for hidden chips or cracks. Finding none, they turn and push it firmly into the adhesive.

Finished.

Nix leans back on their heels, dusting their hands on their heavy canvas apron. Flower, their Espurr, chirps and does a little spin before wiggling a nearby bowl of extra tiles. The way they click together feels celebratory. Ever the serious one, Bronzong gives a low ring of approval before returning to their pokeball. Nix smiles.

The mosaic is a near-exact replica of one that Cale and Nix had seen on their trip together in Galar. There were a great number of ruins to visit in the country; a favorite being a series portraying dog Pokemon.

They were always set in the entryways of homes and buildings. Guards, protectors. Cale had waxed poetic about the historical significance and mythic connections between dog type Pokémon for the better part of a day.

At the time they'd joked about having a matching mosaic of their own. In the years since, the topic had come up in passing several times. Unbeknownst to Cale, Nix was of a mind to make it reality. Not just reality, but a surprise.

This meant assembling the piece over the course of a single day when Cale was away on business. The scope of the project, both size and time frame, meant installing the majority of the piece telekinetically — with the assistance of Bronzong, Solrock, Lunatone and even Flower.

Nix prepared the pattern, the tools and materials weeks in advance. Still, it was a full day of work marking it out, cutting thousands of tiles and placing them piece-by-piece from the center to the border.

Project finished, Solrock spins triumphantly, flooding their mutual link with pride. Lunatone sings jovially as well.

A shaft of light peeks through the blinds, highlighting their hard work. He'll be home with Marinell soon, Nix can't wait for him to see it.

So as I mentioned I do have a holiday fic which I’ll be posting in December, until then though I thought I’d share the details on another holiday fic idea I had. I had two ideas and I debated on which story to write and in the end, I decided that the following idea would be more time consuming and I just didn’t have it in me. So the following is my nixed holiday fic idea.

It was a future fic in which Brittana were celebrating their first holiday season as a married couple. The gist of it was this...as a newly married pair Santana would introduce Brittany to a long standing tradition in the Lopez household: Black Friday shopping.

Santana would explain that she and her mother, Maribel, take their Black Friday shopping very seriously. Every year, no matter what, Santana and Maribel would meticulously map out their plans weeks in advance, scouting ads for the best deals at the best stores. Even though Santana lives in NY with Brittany and there are better shops in the city, it’s a very important mother-daughter tradition that they do their shopping in Lima at the one huge outlet mall. It’s their turf. So Brittana fly back home to enjoy Thanksgiving with both of their families and it’s over dinner that Whitney learns that Brittany is going to join Santana and Maribel for Black Friday shopping. Feeling as if they should include her as well, the Lopez ladies extend an invitation to Whitney. Later that evening, after filling their bellies with food they prepare for retail war.

Whitney and Brittany are a little taken back by how serious Santana and Maribel are about this. They have laminated maps of the mall, food rations in their bags, mace (in case they encounter any unruly shoppers), perhaps Santana even has a set of brass knuckles (which Maribel confiscates from her daughter). Santana and Maribel approach Black Friday with as much intensity and detail as a military maneuver. Whitney and Brittany side eye how ridiculous they are but they overlook it, Brittany loves Santana and Whitney is just jazzed to be included.

So at midnight, Thanksgiving night, the four women set out on their mission and head to the Lima mall. There’s a few very specific deals they have their eyes on but Maribel has her eyes on a very expensive, very rare handbag. I don’t know handbags, it can be whatever. Hermes, Gucci, whatever. The ladies all agree, the fancy handbag is the priority.

Our characters walk into Lima Mall to utter chaos. Their friends and neighbors have turned savage, Santana and Maribel are nonchalant about this, after all, they’ve done this all their lives. Brittany and Whitney are a little out of their element however, perhaps a little bit overwhelmed and maybe even slightly amused to see the usually calm, professional and articulate Maribel Lopez go absolutely apeshit on someone over an air-fryer. The four ladies navigate the mall without incident and manage to bag some sweet swag. Eventually they take a break, refueling with protein bars between stores, it’s then that Santana and Maribel break it down for the Pierce women. Santana explains that everyone in town - everyone in the mall - knows the Lopez women run that mall each and every Black Friday. The name Lopez strikes fear in most people so for the most part all soccer moms and dads know not to mess with them when they’re after a deal but there’s a couple of families in town that like to play and butt against them in a bid to win more power.

‘’The Cohen-Changs and the Fabrays,’’ Santana identifies the two other mother-daughter pairs she and Maribel have been warring with for decades.

‘’You mean our friends?’’ Brittany would ask.

To which Santana would reply, ‘’They’re not our friends, at least not on Black Friday.’’

Because what happens in the Lima Mall stays in the Lima Mall and it turns out that outside of Mckinely and outside of the Glee club the Lopez’s, Cohen-Changs and the Fabrays have been in competition to be the best, most badass Black Friday deal shoppers. Years of sabotaging each other, one-upping each other and so on. Brittany laughs, but Santana is straight-faced.

‘’Babe, this isn’t a joke,’’ Santana declares. ‘’Our three families have had bad blood for years, okay? You’re an official Lopez now which means you’re a part of this. This is important information that you need to know. Now I haven’t seen the Fabrays or the Cohen Changs today but that doesn’t mean they’re not here. This handbag is the holy grail - the it item of the season. My moms wants it but word is the department store has a very limited stock. We gotta make sure we get our hands on one before either of those bitch ass families do!’’

Meanwhile! Interspersed with all of the action scenes in the mall there will be a handful of cutaway scenes that take place in the parking lot as Brittany’s dad and Santana’s dad wait for the women in the Pierce family’s old minivan. Lots of silly banter, with Santana’s dad being the serious straight laced one and Pierce being...Pierce.

The four ladies gear up at the mall, arming themselves with walkies and essentials before storming the department store in question. They wade through the mass of people, elbowing and kicking and screaming and through team work they manage to get their hand on the very last handbag - the handbag of Maribel’s dreams. There’s a moment of celebration between them all until they realize - where’s Brittany?

It seems in the kerfuffle to get their hands on the bag Brittany has vanished, swallowed up into the crowds.

The three women are confused but don’t panic until they hear a message over their walkies. It seems someone has ‘’intercepted’’ Brittany.

‘’You hand over the bag, we hand over your wife,’’ says the person who has taken Brittany and is using Britt’s walkie to make demands on the Lopez-Pierce women.

Santana doesn’t need to be told who it is, she already knows. ‘’Fabray,’’ Santana seethes.

Insert a FaceTime call. Santana and Quinn glare at each other down via their devices. ‘’What do you want, Quinn?’’

‘’I think I’ve made my demands fairly clear, Santana. I want the bag. The choice is yours, you can either trade the bag for your wife or you can keep the bag and suffer the consequences. Who knows what horrible things will be inflicted upon Brittany in the meantime.’’

‘’Hey, babe,’’ Brittany would greet Santana, pushing up against Quinn in order to be in the video frame. ‘’Quinn just bought me a bunch of churros!’’

‘’Brittany, go sit down!’’ Quinn shoves a perfectly safe, perfectly intact Brittany away because obviously this is more of a mind game than a lethal game, but Quinn and Santana are both playing up the intensity for all it’s worth, cause comedy. ‘’As I was saying, Lopez, if you want to see your wife again, you’ll hand over the bag. She’s being held captive at an undisclosed location. You have two hours to make your decision. I’ll contact you again with the location of the trade off, if you dare contact mall security, well...I can’t promise Brittany’s safe return.’’

‘’Quinn, can we go get some Panda Express?’’

‘’Yes, Brittany, we can go get some Panda Express.’’

End call.

Insert some crazed primal scream from Santana. Because of course!

Of course Fabray would play it like this. Of course Quinn would be after this hot bag and of course she would play dirty. This was Quinn’s plan all along, Santana concludes, Quinn would let Santana, Maribel, Whitney and Brittany do the dirty work of actually going through the great unwashed crowds, only to ‘kidnap’ Brittany for the trade off. Quinn would get the bag without having to do any of the work. Evil genius! Santana is mildly impressed but she isn’t about to submit. Maribel is worried and Whitney is on edge so Santana takes the lead in this.

‘’Here’s what we’re going to do - we’re going to play along,’’ she tells her mother and mother in law. ‘’We’re going to make Quinn think we’re going to meet for a trade off but it’ll be trap. We’re going to walk away with Brittany and the bag. They’re somewhere in the mall and we just have to find them.’’

Then insert lots of little scenes as the ladies make their way through the mall, perhaps even bumping into other Glee characters (because everyone is home for Thanksgiving and there’s literally nothing else to do in town). Maybe there’s a short montage as they travel from level to level, occasionally stopping to buy and eat a hot cookie as they search for Quinn’s makeshift lair in the mall.

Eventually all of their running around and clue collecting leads them to believe that Quinn is keeping Brittany in the back stockroom of a Claire’s (which is really sort of a nod to the fact that Claire’s used to sell a lot of silly Glee merch back in the day, like there were Rachel and Quinn themed makeup ‘’palettes’’ lol - also does anyone wish they could go back in time and actually buy all of the dumb Glee merch just to have for shits and giggles and nostaglia, sometimes I do, I remember once going into a Barnes and Noble and seeing a backpack with Finn’s face on it, god, 2009 was a simpler, stupider time and I miss it). Anyway! They make their way to the Claire’s in the mall, bust into the back stock room to find Brittany - again perfectly safe and totally nonchalant. And because they outnumber Quinn they’re able to take back Brittany...briefly.

Once they defeat Quinn (who is left beneath a huge pile of headbands or something) they make their way out back into the main walkway of the mall only to find some giant dance mob demonstration happening with carollers and all kinds of nonsense. It’s there that Brittany gets ‘intercepted’ once again!

They may have just defeated Quinn but they forgot about their other bitter rival: one Tina Cohen Chang.

‘’I’m gonna kick your sneaky ninja ass when I see you Tina,’’ Santana declares over FaceTime.

Tina isn’t amused. ‘’First of all, racist, second of all, how does it feel to lose your wife not once, but twice, Santana?’’

‘’You should know by how I handled Fabray that I don’t negotiate with terrorists, Chang.’’

Thus begins another mission through the mall to find Brittany and again Santana, Whitney and Maribel have to navigate through several stores which have turned into complete war zones. Soccer moms fighting over big screen tvs and people punching each other out over shoes, etc. As they move through stores, kiosks and the food court Santana is in a rage. This wasn’t how their first joint Black Friday as a married couple was supposed to go, she should’ve known once she brought Brittany into the fold others would use her as pawn to gain more power and knock the Lopez family down. Revenge for all those years of the Lopez family tricking, manipulating and fighting dirty on every Black Friday for the past ten years.

Maribel honestly doesn’t care at this point. ‘’Look if they want the bag we can just give them the bag, I’m tired, I just want to get Brittany so we can all go home.’’

But Santana isn’t having it. ‘’No, we’re getting Brittany but we’re not handing over that bag, mom. This mall is our turf - we run it. Retaliation must be swift and brutal. Gangland rules. We figured out where Quinn’s hideout was, we can find Tina’s too and then I’m going to bust a metaphorical cap in her metaphorical ass!’’

After some brief brainstorming Santana decides to make some calls. Insert Face Time with Mercedes, who’s bleary eyed because unlike her idiot friends, she’s at her family home in Lima in bed where all the normal people are Thanksgiving night at 2am.

‘’If Tina were to set up a secret ninja liar in any store at a mall, what store would it be?’’ Santana would ask in greeting.

‘’What the hell are you talking about?’’ Mercedes would scramble to look at the time. ‘’What, it’s 2am, what’s going on - oh wait. Black Friday. Let me guess.’’

‘’Tina has Brittany and she’s holding her hostage somewhere in the mall unless I hand over a Hermes bag!’’

‘’It’s too damn early for any of this nonsense, I’m hanging up.’’

‘’Wait, no, Mercedes, I need your help.’’

‘’Well, junior year whenever Tina and I would hang out at the mall, her favorite store was always Hot Topic.’’

‘’Of course, goth phase era Tina. Why didn’t I think of that?’’

And this of course would be a nod to the Hot Topic tour the cast did when the show first started. They surround the corner Hot Topic to find Tina holding Brittany captive among a bunch of emo shit. Then begins a brief but hilarious tussle between Santana and Tina who is eventually restrained and tied up using like, tattered emo black lace tights.

The gang of ladies walks out of the Hot Topic, again to madness going on all around them within the mall. There’s fist fights, there’s screaming, maybe even a small fire, the residents of Lima have mad this Black Friday and the mall is a warzone. People have gone straight up gorilla and now the mission is to escape the front doors but before they can there’s another interception!

Except this time it’s Maribel and Whitney who are whisked away, vanished into the crazy crowds. Brittany and Santana are confused but once Quinn and Tina join them in their spot, our pair realizes neither Quinn nor Tina are responsible for their moms going MIA. One, they’re standing right in front of them so they couldn’t have and two, they’re not that organized or powerful.

Who could it be this time? And why take their mothers?

The answer comes when they get a FaceTime call from someone from their past. The only person who could and would hire henchmen and go to crazy lengths to get her way. Sue. On screen Sue is sitting in a chair, petting a cat, full villian mode.

‘’Let me guess, you want the handbag?’’ Santana huffs. ‘’Why, it isn’t even your style, what the hell would you want with it?’’

Sue shrugs. ‘’When I travel by plane I tend to get sick in the air and I’d like to use it as my primary vomit bag. If I’m flying first class I’d prefer to vomit in style. I’ve been watching you, your friends and family run around the mall all night, sandbags. Quinn and Tina are amateurs but you know that unlike those two boobs, I can do serious damage if I so chose. So hand over the bag and I’ll hand over your mothers.’’

End call. Brittany and Santana, as well as Tina and Quinn converge to discuss. Yes, Tina and Quinn kidnapped Brittany earlier but those were harmless power plays, but Sue? Who the hell knows what she’s capable of, Quinn reminds them, after all, she almost shot Brittany out a cannon junior year. Sue could ship their moms off to some deserted island or frame them for tax fraud or waterboard them or all kinds of crazy shit.

‘’I’m not handing over this Hermes bag so Sue can puke in it during plane rides,’’ Santana declares.

‘’She has our moms, Santana,’’ Brittany urges.

‘’Look, I got you back twice, didn’t I? I’ll get our moms back.’’

‘’Yeah but what were you up against? Tina? Quinn? No offense, ladies, but you never stood a chance. But Sue? She’s like a legit Disney villian, Santana.’’

Thus begins ANOTHER trek through the mall, this one takes them through employees only section, security camera rooms and air vents. Like all of the action movie tropes, but in this instance played for laughs and all taking place in a shopping mall. Eventually it all leads to a big showdown on the mall rooftop where Sue is leaning into the villian role, even going so far as to tie up Maribel and Whitney to chairs and putting bags over their heads.

‘’Tweedledee, Tweedle fakeboobs, you’ve arrived,’’ Sue greets them.

‘’Here’s the damn bag now let our moms go.’’ Santana tosses the bag in Sue’s direction like this is some kind of mob pay off or drug deal.

Sue inspects the bag and then nudges the moms up and our of their chairs, the moms blindly walk towards their daughters. Lots of hugging and embracing as they work to release Maribel and Whitney of their blindfolds and hand restraints. All the while Sue stands tall, observing the tiny dots of people exiting the building with shopping bags in tow. She has a long and ridiculous spiel about consumerism, american greed, materialism and such. ‘’Look at those unwashed idiots, screaming and trampling and stabbing each other and for what? Big screen TVs and seventy five percent off of mom jeans at Old Navy. Have they no sanctity for the holiday? Then again this holiday is based on a false narrative to erase the very real pillaging and destruction of a native culture so perhaps this…’’ she makes a wave to the barbiac acts and people below them. ‘’...is very much in line with what the holiday represents. Either way, I’m off to spend the next two weeks on my private island so I have a plane to catch and a bag to vomit into. Always a pleasure, Lopez, Pierce.’’

And with that Sue zooms off - taken away by some helicopter that swoops in and scoops her up and all of them are like ‘what the hell’ cause where the hell did the helicopter come from. It’s no matter because they start their way back down off the roof and into the mall. Their all a little worse for wear, some have limps or bruises or small injuries from the evening’s events but they all survived Black Friday at least. Wearily they go down and collect their belongings from where they had hidden/stored them earlier before all the action went down and slowly they FINALLY make their way out of the mall after several hours inside.

The four women enter the Pierce minivan, injured and disheveled. Santana’s father and Brittany’s father jointly turn in their seats.

‘’You girls have fun with your shopping? You get any good deals?’’ Pierce Pierce asks.

‘’I think my ear is broken. Can ears be broken? I got punched in the ear earlier and it feels broken to me,’’ Santana states dryly and to no one in particular.

‘’Honey,’’ Maribel sighs to her husband in the driver’s seat. ‘’Just get us home.’’

Cut to later that night (or technically it’d be the wee hours of the morning, since they start Black Friday shopping at midnight, so when they arrive home it’d be 3 or 4am). Whitney and Pierce have retired to their home. Maribel and Santana’s father have gone to bed as well. Santana and Brittany are in Santana’s old bedroom. Brittany has stitched Santana’s little scraps and bruises up as they prepare for bed.

‘’I’m sorry we all got kidnapped so much tonight,’’ Brittany says.

‘’Babe, it’s not your fault.’’

‘’I know but I feel like me being there got in the way of you and your mom doing your thing, you know?’’

‘’I mean, Black Friday shopping has been a mother-daughter tradition for us since forever, but you’re my family, Britt, that means you’re a part of all the traditions now too, if you want to take part. Although I’m guessing after tonight you’ll never want to go Black Friday shopping with us again.’’

‘’What, are you kidding? If you ask me tonight was a blast! I mean yeah I was a little worried when Sue took our moms for a second but it was also kind of cool, the four of us being a family and doing family things. Like battling the crowds and all of the insanity was a lot but it was also kind of fun. Plus, it was super hot how you got all take chargey and came to rescue me.’’

‘’Hot huh?’’

‘’Totally hot. All that smoldering and chest-heaving…’’ Brittany makes a show of fanning her face.

Santana does her bashful thing but relishes the attention and the kisses and affection Brittany lays on her.

‘’But it also meant a lot to see that you would go to the end of the earth for each of us, all of us and that’s really what this season is all about,’’ Brittany continues, hugging and smooching on Santana. ‘’Family.’’

Cut to a month later. Thanksgiving and Black Friday have passed. Brittany and Santana are once again back in Lima with their families to celebrate Christmas. Everyone is happy and enjoying themselves but Santana’s a little sad she couldn’t give her mother the beautiful rare handbag she had wanted. Maribel waves her daughter off, yes they lost the bag but it doesn’t matter. They still have their tradition and their bond, and now they get to share the experience every single year with Brittany and Whitney now too.

‘’As wild as it was that night, it’s also felt like an adventure with those two along for the ride. I may not have a purse or any material thing to show for the experience but that doesn’t matter. The experience was a gift in itself. Now I have another daughter, now you have another mother, that makes this mother-daughter tradition we have even more wonderful. Plus it means we have an extra two pairs of hands so it’s easier to loot stores.’’

Insert some sweet brief exchanges between Brittany, Santana, Whitney and Maribel who have bonded over the hell that was the first annual Lopez-Pierce Black Friday Shopping Extravaganza.

There would be lots of little details and kinks to work out, not to mention a ton of interaction between Santana-Whitney, Whitney-Maribel, Maribel-Brittany in between all of the running around. The characters would have to be moving through the mall constantly and, it would be a lot. Also I don’t know if anyone has noticed but I tend to write things that are very contained. Bachelorette takes place in the span of one night, so does You Instead, IWLTM takes place over the course of one summer. I have this habit of containing the characters either within a space of time or in a specific physical area or both and making that work is always a tricky thing. I just didn’t feel like creating another sprawling fic like that so, I opted for something a little more simple.

I doubt I’ll ever use this Black Friday fic idea but I feel like if I ever had the time to devote to it, it would be a fun and hilarious ride. I wish I could take you readers on it, but, I hope you got a chuckle out of this maybe?

True Crime NYC is the sequel to True Crime: Streets of LA. It's also attempting a huge bite out of Grand Theft Auto's target audience. It's gritty, realistic (sort of), and meant to bring you right into the seedy underbelly of a New York crime drama. Does it do all this?

Nope, no, nada, sorry, but I digress. The rendering of New York City is incredible. A lot of detail and painstaking care went into making every street and alley look authentic. From Times Square to the depths of Harlem, everything is VERY close to reality. As a tour program this game excels, but I'm betting you're hoping for a lot more than a tour.

Before I get to what's wrong with this game, let me focus on what's right. It's a much shorter list. The graphics are quality, with features drawing from the latest in pixel shading, high polygon count character models and impressive motion capture, topped off with a gorgeous depiction of the big city that leaves a good taste in your mouth. You can spend a fair amount of time enjoying the scenery and getting lost in the mix. Another point for True Crime: the voice acting. They have spared no expense to obtain talent, Laurence Fishburne, Christopher Walken and many others top the list of grade-A voice acting for this game's gritty plot. When I first heard the voice of a mysterious officer bark out orders and explain my next mission in Christopher Walken's creepy cadence, I was very much caught in the moment. On a further note, the audio in this game is not lacking. Sound effects are crisp and believable for the most part, the soundtrack is as varied as you could ever hope for. Bouncing from White Zombie to De La Soul to The Ramones had me guessing that they wanted to avoid the rap-only crowd, though there is a large share of that too.

The plot, in case you're wondering, is you taking the role of Marcus Reed, a down and dirty gangster thug who has embraced the straight and narrow and become a police officer. Although he can still fight and play dirty, he's out to solve a few mysteries and clean up the town. This is mostly achieved by driving around (or by subway, or walking, but, unlike the real NYC, driving is preferable) and catching calls on the radio for random crimes. There is an interesting amount of variety in the crimes, but you soon reach the end of the cycle and bust your 34th counterfeit syndicate and your 23rd serial rapist and the regular missions soon get old. There is a larger plot to follow, however, and it is slightly more interesting. You follow a series of clues and leads to interrogate increasingly more important thugs. The interrogation mini-game is a fun little past-time to beat, or reason, information out of people. You're soon turned onto a mission that involves a mole from inside the precinct.

Ultimately, this plot has been done to death so many times on so many cop dramas that it's difficult to get engaged. This is just the beginning of where the game goes downhill. Obviously, high production values went into this game, but as is so often the case lately, they missed the mark in some very key areas. The controls for one. Amd display driver whql 8.10. I have rarely seen a more convoluted control system for PC.

I'll be the first to admit that this was originally for console, but it seems that barely a token effort was made to translate the commands to a keyboard layout. My fingers got a workout hopping all over the keyboard for the numerous and poorly constructed commands. If you're thinking that a gamepad might fix all this, nix that idea too. My Logitech PS2 Styled PC gamepad looked like a perfect match for this game, alas it was barely configurable and did not coordinate to the multiple styles of game play, you could set it up for driving, but not running, or vice versa, but its limitations soon had me back on the keyboard.

After I had adapted to the controls somewhat, the physics had me somewhat at a loss. Keeping in mind that this is not a driving simulation, at its core, I don't expect much more than doughy arcade style driving. Labtec speakers drivers download. But nothing handled as I expected, the cars were sloppy, sometimes you lightly skidded off the front end of a fire truck, other times being brushed by a motorcycle had you recoiling and turning 360's while your perpetrator was getting further and further away. Finally I just tracked him down on foot after he fell and interrogated him, wondering why I even got on the motorcycle. It's this kind of unfinished and unpolished gameplay that brings this gaming experience to its knees. I couldn't bring myself to care about the characters, the city, the law; nothing in this game draws you in efficiently enough to make you want to finish it.

The controls need work, the engine needs work, the collision detection needs work, the AI needs serious work, all in all I wouldn't be surprised if you told me this was a beta. A brief look at the customer support page for Activision also shows that numerous glitches and problems were had by users of all consoles. Overall, a well-presented, high-budget flop. ok so Big Plot Line aside i really liked that juxtaposition they did with law and religion/belief with Rhino Police in the Cathedral.. could also be read as reason vs emotion if you’re feeling a touch spicier. like. there was a LOT to unpack there. the Character Reveal almost makes me want to crack out my hamlet thinkings of appearance (cathedral and her believed identity) vs reality (space police and bio-cloaking) and that’s just a surface level thought rn, im not standing on that hill im just spitballing here . like especially once i take into account the Space Police are basically a rather bureaucratic militia and not a True Proper tool for representing the law or any of the above

like . there’s a Lot i want to sit down and Un Fucking Pack there. like. a lot. a lot a lot. moving on to the other thing i need to sound off about after i declared my unrationalised love for this ep and i live in fear of being cancelled for being uncritical of my media intake when all i spend my life doing is analysing media i like until its ash and dust on the cold hard ground . yes.

to expand a little on my thoughts of ‘representation’.. my ideas about what we would call representation as short hand, or reproduction of marginalised and diverse identity in mainstream media for long hand, were forged in the fire of destiel and clexa and 2015. (i’m not going into the use and effect of representation rn bc that’s .. so much) i’m very aware my ideas on representation are both needlessly complex and simultaneously identical to common thought and quite radical. i have no jurisdiction to talk about anything in any official capacity, however this won’t shut me up.

sci-fi, horror and fantasy is where i spend a lot of my time thinking and even now i Really Really hesitate writing things down bc a) my opinion could change the second i press post and b) i may be seriously misinformed or ignorant of something and people have, can or will assume im acting in complete bad faith and mean harm when im actually just ignorant and my media intake is or has been interpreted differently for a million different reasons.

i just typed out a massive paragraph that even I didn’t understand so im nixing that one. i have no idea how to articulate my thoughts on representation as defined above , and that means i don’t understand them. which is fair. and then the layer of ‘i have to remember im posting this on tumblr so i have to be incredibly mindful of how i say what i say’ and i can’t do the first, let alone the second hurdle to articulating any of those thoughts.

Just more proof to keep sticking with it though! Some months are up, and some are down, but ultimately everything trends upwards the more you continue to save and pay attention to things. And really it all starts with *tracking* your finances so you can see these advancements.

Some might even say it’s just as important as budgeting?! ;)

Here’s how our money broke down this month:

[These reports are shared every month to keep things transparent and start great conversations around money in our lives… Something we’re not so great at in the *real world*. By putting this stuff out in the open my hope is that we can all learn and grow from it, but more importantly that it helps MOTIVATE everyone to keep going and know that it doesn’t take much to get the seed planted! Just a little time, patience, and some good ol’ fashion hustle :) So without further adieu, here’s Net Worth Report #125…]

CASH SAVINGS (+$2,826.39): Always a good month when you bring in more than you spend! But I’ll save the celebrating until we weather through the current Baby Storm as it sure doesn’t ADD any money to your lives, haha… Unless places start accepting cuteness in lieu of cash?

SPAVINGS FUND! (+$103.19): Another nice bump here, courtesy of not going out and shopping much with said baby, as well as continued savings from nixing HBO and cheaper internet options from our move the other month… I also worked hard picking up pennies off the street, some more so than others!

(Yup, that’s asphalt… #NoPennyLeftBehind)

THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN (TSP) (+$646.23): My wife’s retirement account continues to go up with each paycheck! Another great example of compound savings over time – and in this case only around two years since she started working again… We have her invested 100% in the “L 2040” Lifecycle Fund, for those familiar with these gov’t plans… (she’s a bit more conservative than I and likes to be diversified more)

BROKERAGE (+$1,768.43): Only two months in and our $50k deposit continues to make dividends! Quite literally! You can read more about this new account of ours in last month’s report, but basically I wanted to finally diversify our *types* of accounts more and was ready to move a lot of our cash savings out so it can be more productive. And since we had yet to have a normal *taxable* brokerage account in the mix vs retirement accounts, we decided it made the most sense. All invested in VTSAX, of course ;)

ROTH IRAs (+$3,701.35): A nice little uptick here as well, courtesy of the markets just doing their thing as we haven’t been able to add extra in here for quite some time… (made too much last year to contribute which you can’t complain about!)

SEP IRA (+$14,933.89): This account we *did* pump up two months ago, but the earnings this month are strictly from the markets doing well this round… And it really is SO CRAZY to think about as we literally didn’t move a finger at all – in fact, I didn’t even check the market *once* with all the baby hubbub, yet we still “earned” $15,000 just like that! That’s passive income at its finest, right there… And all it takes is getting that ball rolling, *and then not touching any of it!*

Here’s a screenshot of our investments since moving to Vanguard four years ago:

CAR VALUES (-$281.00): The only category you can’t get mad about losing, haha… It’s supposed to go down! And if you don’t have any car payments it’s even harder to be bothered by it ;)

Here are the values of our two cars presently, via Kelly Blue Book:

Lexus RX350: $8,859.00

Toyota Corolla: $2,789.00

Total change in net worth this month: +$23,698.48

And then here’s a snapshot of just the past twelve months to give you a better overall picture. It doesn’t always go up, no matter what you do!

Lastly, baby net worths…. Although now I need to add in a new one!

(For those interested, the 529s are from the state of Virginia and are invested in their “Aggressive Growth” portfolio option. Which “maintains a target asset allocation of 80% equity, 20% fixed income. This target asset allocation is comprised of the following Asset Classes and Funds: 48% domestic equity, managed by The Vanguard Group, Inc.; 32% international equity, managed by The Vanguard Group, Inc.; 14% market fixed income, managed by The Vanguard Group, Inc.; and 6% international fixed income, managed by The Vanguard Group, Inc.” Yeah Vanguard!!)

And that’s May! Anyone else reach a personal high? Anyone hit early retirement? :)
