Electron Micrographs
(Part 2 of 4)
Fugitive Glue, Lollipop, and Strawberry DNA
Fugitive Glue
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I received a junk mail credit card offer, and I decided to take the piece of rubbery stuff that held the fake card to the paper to look at under the microscope. I originally referred to it as rubber cement, but I think it's actually called fugitive glue, among other names. Even exposed to air for a few days, it was still rubbery and malleable.
Unfortunately, being an organic compound, it did start to melt from the current of electricity that the microscope runs through it, which you can see happening in these images.
Lollipop Fragment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We had a bunch of leftover lollipops from Halloween at my house, so I took one of the flavors my brother didn't like to smash up and look at under the microscope.
In the first image, don't get confused by the background. The big angular piece is the lollipop, and the round things in the back are from the special tape used for keeping things on the stage (probably some bubbles trapped under it). I forget what kind of tape he said it was, but it was something able to conduct electricity.
The images of the sugar crystals are unclear and blurry because they, too, were actively melting while we were looking at them. Organic compounds just tend to do that. That said, you can still see the shapes of some of the crystals that hadn't yet melted.
Strawberry DNA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Having extracted some of my own DNA before, which I keep in an Eppendorf tube on my desk, I thought maybe it would be interesting to look at under the microscope.
However, I didn't want to potentially ruin the sample I had, so I followed NileRed's video to refresh myself on the process and used strawberries like he did. I also did it at 1/4 scale of what he did, because I really didn't need as much as he got. (By the way, DNA feels disgusting to touch. So much so that I used tweezers and forceps to handle it instead.)
Unfortunately, as you can see, the images aren't super clear or detailed, possibly for a few reasons.
The sample may still have had some moisture in it, which does interfere with how the machine sees it, I think.
It was also very clumped, because when you extract DNA, it all clumps together and I couldn't really separate the piece I was using into a thin layer.
It also may just be the size of DNA in general, which is molecular (just a very long one). I was hoping we'd see at least something, but I guess the indications of lines is all we could get.
I'm keeping the rest of the DNA we didn't use in some more Eppendorf tubes on my desk, because why not.
In the BDS Full images, the white parts are the hotter parts, where more electrons are being conducted through.
The scale in the bottom left corner of the images is in micrometers. 1 millimeter = 1000 micrometers

Hiya! You guys (singular? Plural?) seem like a good group to ask.
I have a very public facing job and mask throughout the winter (for various reasons) and would like to continue doing so, but the humidity makes it hard to breathe. This might be a result of mild asthma from when I was younger, but I can’t afford getting Covid again and my customers keep coughing on me. So!
Have you suggestions for a mask that would help with this? One that doesn’t trap humidity but which is good for keeping out microbes?
This is a difficult question to answer without a whole bunch of additional background knowledge and resources I don't have access to (like try-on masks, for example), so I'll try to hit the big points:
There has been a lot of study on the phenomenon you're talking about, and it's purely psychological in the vast majority of cases. It's a very similar mechanism to the way claustrophobia inflicts breathlessness (the classic "I NEED AIR" trope), and with some discipline and a bit of training, you can get the instinct to quiet down. In the safety of your home, you should try doing some basic breathing exercises in a mask, focusing on improving the depth of your natural breathing. A common trap that can trigger this issue is allowing yourself to breathe very shallowly for long periods of time, and when your body realizes it's not respirating hard enough, it can give you the same suffocating feeling because there is something physically over your mouth and nose. Many studies have been done and show no difference in blood 02 or other metabolic levels between maskers and non-maskers or people who have this complaint and those who do not, and as someone with serious asthma, I can confirm that it's a solvable issue with the same techniques an allergist or pulmonologist would use with you to treat your asthma.
The breathability of your masks may be wrong for your face type. A bigger chamber is more breathable and more likely to stay in contact with your face during movement, giving a better seal. A lot of people get stuck wearing masks that simply don't fit, so you have to shop around a little. I post sales all the time so you could grab a cheap 10 pack of a new style or brand from time to time that way, or you can reach out to your local or regional mask bloc. The bloc in my state sent me a very nice "try on kit" of many styles and brands of N95, KN95, and KF94 masks.
Since you are a lone masker, you should upgrade your protection to an elastomeric. The better seal is not only reusable and more comfortable for long-term use, they are inherently more breathable because of the rigidity of the air chamber. And it gives you the best protection in a one way masking scenario, giving you the full 96% filtration of an N95 or the 99.5-9% of a P100 filter. Flo Mask (while a bit more "boutique" in pricing) offers one of the more "speakable" (Doesn't muffle your voice too much), breathable models that also includes moisture control (cheap packs of foam inserts that catch excess moisture). Below you'll find some resources about masking and a list of "where to buy" that includes a lot of different masks and elastomerics that I'm always updating.
^(Links on this one are outdated and may not work, but their assessments can be helpful)

I alive
Greetings everyone. umuh just update post to say I am alive again :p I have died on here for several IRL reasons, like… I graduated from uni :3 AND ALSO recently my mind had been forcefully turned towards MICROBES🦠 And how cool and evil they are >:) Like. How are these cute little Typhus critters more powerful than all of Napoleon’s cannons.. How did the Spanish flu kill 1/3 of the entire population more than the literal WWI that was happening at the time…. it’s crazy…
anyways apologies for another radio silencing on here, i cannot handle more than one social media app at a time it seems😅. i’ll soon be posting napoleonic sillies since school is finally over until it’s not, but I’ll also be posting non-napoleonic art bc i want to draw louis pasteur and heliozoans too HEEHEE. OKTHANK YOU BYE💖

Of Doctors, Emperors, and Light Magic
After watching a few videos and shows with characters that are zombies and skeletons, it got me thinking about Flight Rising’s healing magic types, Emperors and Light’s magic.
~Warning: this post contains topics of fictional death, sickness, body horror, medical things
In terms of doctors and healer dragons, Nature and Plague come to mind the first. For a body to heal cells must grow, and Nature’s magic definitely could push growth and healing processes. Plague doctors would have ability to know the body’s microbiome and be able to influence it to prevent infection and the ability create antivirals and antibiotics. Lighting doctors would be less magic and more highly developed tools and knowledge of the body.
But what about magic within patient? It is known that Sornieth has “lines of magic that crisscross the world” and that there are nexuses or nodes where those lines cross and pools of magic power. So much like the land, the magic that runs throughout the dragon all leads from a central magic core. Without magic the body of a dragon becomes impossible, unable to fly, unable to breath, unable to support their own weight. Yes, some smaller dragons would be less affected by their anatomy issues, and that might be why Fae dragons have “smaller internal reserves of magic than most species”. The smaller the dragon the less magic is needed to keep it living, breathing, and flying.
So, what Flights would be best as doctors of dragon magic lines? Arcane definitely, Fae dragons are renowned for their ability to harness internal and external magic reserves. I like to think of Light as a close second, their magic is made of a stable and pure radiant energy, and they are taught on a scholarly and logical level. Their magic might be able to fuse with other types, allowing them to see into the magic lines of their patients and restore the flow of magic to the body. They could energize failing magic lines and purify places of Shade infection.
They would also work well as a whole-body healer, with their magic they can give power to the cells to replicate and their radiant power able to precisely destroy microbes. That power is what keeps Emperors up and moving, and halting- but not stopping- decay. Their magic cores are still active, supporting the body’s immune system, healing wounds, destroying bacteria, keeping the whole body moving and attacking. However, the body lacks oxygen from a blood supply thus leading to ischemia and death of the tissue. It is stated that Emperor’s are a “mindless monstrosity”, but if they had any mind left, they would be in constant agony as their body slowly decomposes and reforms.
Now how does one destroy an Emperor? As long as the magic cores are still active their bodies can still heal, and Imperials due to their massive size, have massive internal magic stores. Furthermore, if they are on ground that is next to an elemental ley (magic) line they can recharge their magic stores. So, unless the magical cores could be destroyed, then it would be a battled of attrition. Dragons close by would be at risk of being incorporated into the body of the Emperor, their magic and cells replenishing the decaying creature. Imperials are an exponentially even worse risk of becoming another part of the Emperor, adding heads and intact magical cores.
To stop the Emperor from healing, magical ley lines would have to be diverted from the battlegrounds, and physical long-distance combat would be key. Thus, slowly but surely, the Emperor’s magic would need to be depleted till the body is no longer able to keep itself together. Full body suits with respirators would be required to prevent magical contamination. The cores would need to be found and shattered, and then body would have to be destroyed in a non-magical way that completely consumes the body (usually fire). Any essence, magic, ash, or bone left is to be sent in a lead lined box to the Beacon of the Radiant Eye to be researched and studied.
Now you want to make an Emperor- are you insane? I could tell you but...

Snom fact #74:
In the wild, a snom’s diet seemingly consists entirely of snow. The widely accepted theory until roughly five years ago was that snow was simply used to form ice spikes, and actual nutrients were acquired from various cold-resistant lichen, however this research, conducted by the Aether Foundation, was later found to be inaccurate, as the test snoms eating the provided lichen was found to be a stress response to the lab environment. Similar research by the foundation has also been disproved by the round of peer review conducted by various organizations (notably in the one non-controversial action of team plasma), including but not limited to: increase in the aggression level of Gyarados in response to certain types of architecture, everstones causing a power increase of the move frustration, and the commonly believed factoid of Lurantis’ post-reproductive cannibalism. The foundation has since declared bankruptcy. Several other theories have since been made, such as that snoms are a type of elemental lifeform and thus do not require food, or that they can survive off the watts that naturally occur in the Galar region, but all were disproven. While some of Dr. Magnolia’s theories are promising, recent studies show that while the watt concentration in permafrosted areas is high, little of it reaches the top layer of snow that snoms tend to prefer. The same studies, however, also reveal a high level of dynamax energy-charged particles that, from area to are, is proportional to the population of microscopic ice-type microorganisms in the area. This tells us that the local microbes have adapted to consume dynamax energy, and due to the high energy content, are sufficient sustenance for snoms (given a snom’s low metabolism due to low body temperature.) this also explains why wild snoms are found in no other regions

Read this instead of Rifters by Peter Watts
Non-Spoilery info:
Rifters is a series of 4 scifi novels from around 2004. They contain a extraordinary mix of cool & off-putting elements. What's cool about it is it's a delightfully bleak drama about amoral cyborgs fighting freaky nonhumans.
Discussion of fictional sexual assault:
The most strikingly off-putting element is that this is in part a drama about how horrible it would be if a evil government modified your brain to enjoy being a victim of rape. Personally i find this a reasonable topic for horror science fiction - indeed, it would be quite horrible. But i think it's sufficiently gruesome for readers to know what they're getting into. And sufficient for many readers to skip the series. If that's you, then i hereby give you permission to read this post & spoil yourself on all the other cool things that happen in this series :)
Spoilers for Book 1:
The 1st novel, Starfish, is cool but very small-scale. We're in a ominous research station on the bottom of the ocean. My favorite parts:
The deep-sea organisms are mysteriously developing beyond the usual rules of biology. (However, the author is a marine biologist obsessed with accuracy, so we will still be getting real science ideas here.) Transparent fish several meters across, organisms clumping up & behaving like cells in a superorganism, flesh gone mad.
One of the characters suffers a stroke in his modified brain while swimming outside the station. His radio goes dead but his vitals keep going. He goes feral, haunting the ocean floor, eating fish, mostly braindead, only his 'lizard brain' functions running his body.
Spoilers for Book 2:
Maelstrom is my favorite book in the series. It has some fun ideas that i've never seen elsewhere in scifi. Favorite parts:
Much of the future economy depends on biotech thinking machines composed of vat-grown human gray matter. They're more like computers than brains, because they are human neurons arranged in totally different shapes & arrangements from a brain. Each one is task-specific: Some are connected to a mic & speakers & can speak to you, some are connected to cameras & can see, & some run shipping companies.
The delightful nickname for these neuronal petri dishes is 'head cheeses'.
The portrayal of the strengths & weaknesses of these neural nets is mostly quite realistic. You could also say this is the best pre-LLM novel about LLMs.
The future internet has a totally awesome problem. There was a cybersecurity arms race where humans competed to create computer viruses that could evolve faster than defensive viruses could keep up. Now most computers on the planet are carriers for a million strains of endemic, still-evolving viruses.
We call these 'wildlife'.
We even get memorable chapters from the point of view of wildlife! Struggling to avoid being overwritten (byte by byte) by more sophisticated wildlife.
We also have a biological epidemic. The protagonists caught a deadly microbe at the bottom of the ocean, now it's devastating cities on land.
This microbe, called Behemoth, is a totally new domain of life. Its metabolism uses new a chemical pathway which is of superior efficiency to all other life. It has been contained to one hydrothermal vent for eons, because cold water is lethal to it.
At first, we think it came in on a panspermial meteorite long ago.
Later, we learn it is native to Earth, coming from abiogenesis at that vent. All other domains of life are panspermial. We colonized Behemoth's planet!
Earth is ruled by a amoral corporation-government. (ie, a 'corporation'-themed organization that rules territory, has a monopoly on force, & draws taxes.) They are fun antagonists, full of cynical spymasters & smart, heartless biologists.
The corporation is initially skilled at handling both biological & cybersecurity epidemics. Corporate computers are well-firewalled against wildlife, & cities are quarantined off from each other by walls & draconian biosecurity checkpoints. However, Behemoth becomes unstoppable.
The tone of this novel is very fun. Cyberpunk super-agents vs huge evil government. Human species lucky if they can survive the year. Scowling at night in a rainstorm. Etc.
EVERY character is amoral. Everyone & everything is a self-prioritizing organism in a ecosystem.
At the end, we think everyone has failed to contain Behemoth, & that it will infect & kill all terrestrial life. But then we see something awesome. The corporation has deployed a line of (vacuum-chamber) airships, sweeping west across North America, firebombing the continent so thoroughly as to completely sterilize every ecosystem. The bad guys aren't giving up yet!
Spoilers for Book 3 & 4:
These books escalate the stakes & do a decent job of concluding everything. Favorite parts:
Earth's leadership has abandoned every continent (!) & is now based out of a station on the ocean floor. (It's a different ocean.)
Those land animals that weren't bombed are developing mysterious new phenotypes. Animals grow extra limbs, in a strange symbiosis - perhaps Behemoth will become a upgrade to the mitochondrion??
As a general theme, all characters are nothing more than a collection of lobes & cortices, sometimes artificially disrupted. The universe is nothing more than a lawless contest between humans, microbes, & everything else. Whichever organism adapts & reproduces more in Earth's chemical environments wins.
The corporate biologists lose control & the freaky organisms win.
Again, this series has a lot of unpleasant rape plotlines, but the other parts are so fun! People who won't read the books deserve at least to hear what happens in them.
PS: I halfheartedly recommend Maelstrom. I wholeheartedly recommend Blindsight, my favorite novel by Watts :)

Hi so the post was in like march but you said something about wanting more "mad parasitologists" and I feel like you should know that that's just a regular parasitologist (who's being held to society's standards). A non-insignifciant chunk of the field rn is dedicated to using various worms and their derived products therapeutically. A parasitologist smuggled American hookworms into Australia during the pandemic by just... becoming infected. Most of the parasitologists I know are eagerly anticipating my venture to make "giant microbes" but for helminths. I know a tick researcher who calls them "the forbidden popping boba". All of this is normal to us.
i assume you’re referring to this post
oh i’m aware of scientists being considered “mad” by the public for doing things that are considered normal in their field, and i’m sure parasitologists are no different. by “mad parasitologist,” i was thinking more along the lines of creating a parasite to puppet people around like meat suits for the express purpose making the taco bell employees go on strike in pursuit of better pay and benefits.

Okay so I actually have so many questions about the pokemon world but none of them are, like, good worldbuilding questions. This isn't a post about meaningful questions with any bearing on the story or characters whatever. This post is 'okay so taxonomically, are pokemon animals?' because I'm just. so curious about the implications of this. I'm fascinated by this. All pokemon would at LEAST be eukaryotes, right? They have to be, if they reproduce through eggs. But what about artificial pokemon? Are they technically not animals? Are phylogenetic trees just an entirely different type of weird in the pokemon universe to account for this? Is there less of a meaningful distinction between cellular and non-cellular materials because of whatever, like, rock pokemon have going on? Do their phylogenetic trees just not break things down into 'prokaryotes' and 'eukaryotes'? Separate note more about specific taxonomy stuff, what about the overlap of plant and animal pokemon? Tropius produces fruits, making it an angiosperm, but is it an animal in addition to a plant (both at once)? Is the plant separate, is it an animal AND a plant separately? It photosynthesizes but it also presumably needs food from external sources as well, right? Literally what even is Rotom. It's plasma. What are the implications of it being alive. Deoxys needs its own three-part post. I'm not smart enough for any of this but I want to stare at a wall and think about it for three hours. ARE THERE POKEMON MICROBES. Don't even get me started on the vetmed side of pokemon science. I'm probably going to get myself started on it later when I have less to do.

Electron Micrographs
(Part 1 of 4)
Flower Petal & Stamen
The images in this post are all of a flower petal, except the last one, which is the stalk of a stamen. (I don't know what kind of flower it was. Sorry to all the botanists out there.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here on we can see the plant cells on the petal, with some wrinkles along them. The wrinkling may be a normal part of the petal, or it could be due to the vacuum that the microscope pulls (which would therefore be pulling moisture out of the cells and causing them to wrinkle).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also kept finding these little granules all over the petal, though we couldn't figure out what they were. Referencing images of pollen under SEM, it doesn't seem to match up.
I messaged my former biology professor about these images, and she suggested that one possibility is that they could be the conidia (reproductive spores) of a plant fungus called Alternaria alternata. She noted it looks similar and is approximately the right size.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also found this odd part with little stalks sticking out of it. There also seems to be some sort of layer on top, which got a bit torn. I messaged my biology professor about this as well and she suggested that they look like plant hairs, which are similar to root hairs.
Tumblr media
This part here is the stalk of a stamen. He (the lab manager) was hoping to get the pollen part but it seems he accidentally messed it up when trying to place it on the stage and it got destroyed/removed. Oh well.
The scale in the bottom left corner of the images is in micrometers. 1 millimeter = 1000 micrometers

review: 寒武再临/The Return of Cambrian Period/by 水千丞/Shui Qian Cheng
Tumblr media
(Artwork from the audiodrama on Mao'er)
A very long review to match a very long novel ~
Synopsis (Spoiler-free)
After a massive earthquake in Qinghai, microbes, plants, animals, and even people started to develop mutations. Within days, human civilization crumbles as mutated bacteria spoil the food supply, overgrown plants wreck havoc on infrastructure, and many animals grow to sizes that can easily kill and eat humans.
The day after the Earthquake, before its impact is truly understood, Special Unit soldier Cheng Tianbi detours on his return journey from Qinghai to bring network engineer Cong Xia from Kunming to Beijing, as favor to Cong Xia's uncle. However, with congested highways, lack of fuel, and mutant animal attacks, they never make it to the airport. While battling for survival, they discover their mutant special abilities. They return to the city, and learn that more humans have started showing superpower-like mutations.
With planes being a thing of the past, Cheng Tianbi and Cong Xia plan to trek to Beijing along the highways. They build a small but strong team with other mutants they meet along the way: a movie star, a child genius, a martial artist, a lost teenager, and the child's 8-meter tall mutant cat Abu. Along the way, they need to hunt for food, find gas for their car, replenish their weapons supply, and fight gangs of mutant humans who want their resources.
But they are determined to reach Beijing, hoping the resources -- and family -- in the capital can provide some stability and safety in the post-apocalyptic world. But even before they reach their destination, they look at changes in to their world and realize Beijing will not be the end of their journey, but a new beginning of a much bigger challenge.
After civilization has collapsed, when basic survival itself is no longer guaranteed, what will humans strive for, what is the cost they are willing to pay, and what is the meaning and value of humanity at the end of all that? Can humanity survive this mass extinction event?
What I like about this story
Apocalyptic setting. Survival is hard in this universe. Mutant microorganisms quickly spoil any food that isn't frozen solid or meticulously processed, and crops have mutated to produce much smaller edible yields. Almost all existing food supply is decimated, with no reliable replacement except maybe for hunting. Microorganisms also become resistant to medicine and sterilization protocols, turning small wounds into fatal infections, and even making surgery a risky luxury. Infrastructure supporting comforts of modern life like running water, electricity, wireless communication, and even roads fail within days without proper maintenance against destructive mutants. Temperature trends much colder than people are used to. And this is before we account for most animals growing large enough to kill humans in a single bite. After adapting to all these all these immediate threats, the long term consequences of losing so much manpower and industrial capabilities become keenly felt. No more fossil fuels providing power. No more factories to mass-produce consumable goods. No more cellphones. There are lot's of details that constantly remind you that the old way of life really is gone.
Cool Mutations. Some people develop traits of animals and plants, and are able to transform entirely into a non-human form; some can grow wings and fly, or turn into dog and lion and other animals, but five meters tall. In universe, the most powerful group of mutants can each manipulate an aspect of nature or the elements. But my favorite mutant in the story is main gang's team pet, the 8-meter tall ragdoll cat named Abu. As a domesticated pet, Abu may not the most ferocious combatant, but it certainly is the biggest and the prettiest. It does become a hassle to get him properly washed up at that size, though....
Ambiguous antagonist. The main "antagonist" in this novel is not a person, but the force of nature that leads to mutations, and to a lesser extent, the hostile world and creatures it creates. Many stories flop after raising the stakes to impossible heights because it's very difficult to create compelling villain characters who can justify that level of threat. But when the culprit is nature itself, anything can happen and any level of threat feels completely plausible.
Plot and structure. The main story is split into eight books, and most books build up to a climactic confrontation for its story arc after revealing new information or a new threat. The heroes fight against increasingly dangerous targets in their "side quests" for each book, but there is something novel and refreshing in the resolution of each story arc. Some people find so many "side quests" a bit tiring and dragging, but I loved them here and sort of wish we have more of those.
Power progression. The heroes, their allies, and their opponents are all getting more powerful at roughly the same rate, via exposure to the special energy in the environment. So, we are keep on introducing cool new abilities and increasingly dangerous opponents without repeatedly invoking the Worf Effect .
Ensemble cast. Even among the most powerful group of mutants, each have their own strengths and weakness; there isn't a single character who is the "most powerful" in the world. Someone else is going to be better in one specific scenario or another, whether it's to kill you or save your life. It keeps all the conflicts interesting, and I really like the social atmosphere this creates. There is genuine value in teamwork and solidarity, and learning to coexist with people you don't like.
Side characters (couples)! The flirty-and-extroverted movie star vs the traditional-but-sincere martial artist. The ambitious and possessive newcomer vs the haughty and grumpy local princeling. Childhood friends turned rival leaders. Free-spirited artist and the plant that literally consumes him. The super soldiers, mercenaries, and genius scientist from SQC's Dragon Blood are important side characters in the later 2/3 of the novel. All their stories are explored further the extra chapters, but their presence in the main story is rich and dynamic enough to make the world feel real.
Warm and fuzzy feelings. The apocalypse has left people cynical and self-centered. Its survivors need to be incentivized with wealth and power to keep fighting, but in the heat of battle, they never hold back from risking and giving everything they have got. The survival of humanity hinged not only on power and technology, but people's willingness to work together to fight for something other than themselves -- even if it's just that one person they care about. The warmth from the love and friendships that still remain provides some much needed hope and optimism in this grim and harsh setting.
Tumblr media
(Abu's official design in the novel canon)
But on the Other hand
The Protagonist. Cong Xia is an "everyman" kind of character. He gets scared, gets emotional, doesn't know how to fight, and isn't good at dealing with life-and-death situations. Yet, he takes care of people in the ways that he can, wants to help, is a fairly smart guy who is always learning and improving, and never backs off from fighting on the front lines where his unique powers are desperately needed. This normal-ness is a double-edged sword. Cong Xia is an excellent POV character, the one "regular" person reacting to the chaos of his world in a way that is actually relatable to the reader. However, he ends up feeling a bit boring and even out of place at times, as his personality is completed dwarfed by the super-soldiers, ruthless politicians, genius scientists, etc in the cast, who are just much cooler, more memorable, and more capable at handling the apocalypse than a regular guy like him.
The main couple is kind of boring, imho. They are two people with little in common but fall in love after getting into near-death situations together. They get together around 1/4 to 1/3 of the way into the novel, and remain a perfectly happy, loving couple (with a reasonably active sex life). With all the tension in the main plot, I suspect the author intentionally made the main relationship feel like a safe harbor for fluff and romance to lighten the mood. But this perfect relationship and nearly-perfect love interest is just bland, especially when contrasted against the many side couples who are dealing with conflicting personalities or complicated personal histories to make their relationships work.
Spotlight shift. In later parts of the novel, members of the original team (other than the main couple) have their roles reduced to make way for powerful new characters who are "necessary" for increasingly challenging battles. They are often relegated to the background or off-screen during battles, or sit out of some missions entirely because their abilities are not suited for the task. It's reasonable in-universe, but I'm so sad it's not the six of them plus Abu facing off the final monsters together.
Length and Pacing. At 1.7 million characters (including the extras), this novel is LONG. By the time they make it to Beijing, you feel like you have read an entire novel, which is sort of true when you think about the word count, but there is still more than two-thirds of the story left. I really enjoy watching these characters work together to fight different "monsters of the week" again and again, but this is definitely not a universal preference.
Gory Battle Sequences. Some of these battles are NOT pleasant. Our heroes, especially Cong Xia, gets covered in far more flesh, blood, and other body tissues than you ever want to think about, and hot showers with running water are precious luxuries in a post apocalyptic world. I don't always visualize the scenes when I read, but with this novel, I needed to make a point of not doing it at times.
No brains, just action. Many elements in the story feel like magic, but the plot insists on imposing a rather complex in-universe scientific logic on it. The conflicts with other political groups are riddled with plot holes. It's also not very convincing to me how quickly the main characters became a cohesive team and developed their friendships. I love this story, but it's better not to think too hard about its internal claims and logic, and just accept it as it is. Some things can be really silly if you stop to think about it. For example, when the mutant humans transform their body enough, all of their clothes gets destroyed. Anytime they transform back mid-battle to regroup, it's a group of "coworkers" who don't even necessarily like each other, standing there naked to discuss their next move in battle ...
Overall
This is an action-adventure story in an apocalyptic setting, with powers and logic that make it feel closer to urban fantasy than hard science fiction. I think its strongest points are its world-building, ensemble cast, action-packed story arcs, and a general sense of optimism and idealism despite the grim setting. However, the main character and romance are not very engaging, and a lot of details can't really stand up to scrutiny. With it's length and structure, this novel may not be an appealing read for everyone; I happened to be in the right mood at the right time to enjoy it. But I'm so glad I finished the story and got to see this world.
(I immediately went back to re-read my favorite parts, and started reading the sort-of-prequel Dragon Blood. But that's is an entirely different flavor of story and relationship ... )

Soothes Itchy, Irritated, or Inflamed Skin Whether from eczema, dermatitis, or general dryness, Neem cream calms the skin and helps restore comfort and balance.
Fights Acne and Blemishes Its antimicrobial properties work to reduce bacterial growth on the skin while gently unclogging pores—ideal for those with acne-prone or oily skin.
Promotes Healing and Skin Repair Neem supports the natural healing process by stimulating regeneration and collagen production. This makes it effective for minor wounds, cuts, and even post-acne scars.
Hydrates Without Clogging Pores Its herbal base deeply moisturizes while remaining lightweight and breathable, making it perfect for daily use on dry or combination skin.
Combats Signs of Aging Rich in antioxidants, Neem cream helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dullness by protecting the skin from oxidative damage.
Defends Against Infections Neem’s antibacterial and antifungal properties create a natural defense barrier against microbes, making it useful for those prone to skin infections or fungal issues.
Enhances Skin Immunity By strengthening the skin’s natural barrier, Neem supports resilience against environmental stressors like pollution and UV exposure.

Dry, flaky, or irritated skin
Acne-prone or oily complexion
Symptoms of eczema or dermatitis

Always perform a patch test if using any new skincare product, especially if you have extremely sensitive skin.
A Natural Approach for Modern Skin Challenges

Probiotics Postbiotics in Skincare
Probiotics and Postbiotics in Skincare: The New Frontier of Healthy Skin
Dermat India explores how bacteria-powered skincare is changing the face of dermatology
Introduction: Skincare Goes Beyond the Surface
The health of our skin isn’t just about what we apply—it's also about how our skin interacts with its environment, including the countless microscopic organisms that live on it. This ecosystem, known as the skin microbiome, has become one of the most exciting areas in skincare innovation.
Today, ingredients like probiotics and postbiotics are reshaping how we think about beauty and dermatology. At Dermat India, we are integrating these breakthrough ingredients into modern skincare to support the skin naturally, protect its barrier, and promote long-term skin health.
What Makes the Skin Microbiome So Important?
Your skin is home to trillions of beneficial bacteria, fungi, and other microbes. These organisms help maintain the skin’s health by:
Defending against harmful bacteria and infections
Supporting the skin's barrier function
Regulating inflammation
Aiding in skin repair
However, daily stressors like pollution, harsh products, and antibiotics can disturb this microbiome—leading to problems like acne, irritation, eczema, and premature aging.
Probiotics: Live Bacteria That Benefit the Skin
Probiotics are live microbes that offer skin benefits when applied topically. When carefully selected and preserved, they help:
Restore balance to disrupted microbiomes
Calm inflammatory skin conditions like acne or rosacea
Strengthen the skin’s immune response
Support moisture retention and healing
Dermat India uses safe, non-pathogenic strains of probiotics known for their soothing, barrier-repairing properties—particularly helpful for acne-prone or sensitive skin.
Postbiotics: Powerful Compounds from Probiotic Activity
Postbiotics are not live bacteria, but the beneficial molecules produced by probiotics—such as enzymes, peptides, fatty acids, and vitamins. These are incredibly stable, making them ideal for long-lasting skincare formulations.
They:
Offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection
Stimulate skin renewal and hydration
Help reduce redness and sensitivity
Are suitable for even the most reactive skin types
At Dermat India, postbiotics are key ingredients in products designed to heal, soothe, and defend the skin barrier—especially after procedures or for chronic skin conditions.
Tumblr media
How Dermat India Uses Microbiome-Based Skincare
Dermat India has developed a line of probiotic and postbiotic skincare treatments tailored for Indian skin and climate. Our approach includes:
Lightweight, pH-balanced probiotic cleansers and serums
Postbiotic-rich creams for barrier restoration and anti-aging
Dermatologist-supervised care programs for acne, eczema, and rosacea
Integration of microbiome-focused products into post-laser and post-peel regimens
We believe that gentle, microbiome-friendly care can reduce reliance on harsh antibiotics and steroids, promoting natural healing and long-term skin balance.
Who Should Use Probiotic/Postbiotic Skincare?
This skincare is especially useful for people dealing with:
Acne or frequent breakouts
Inflammation or rosacea
Post-treatment redness or dryness
Sensitive, reactive, or over-exfoliated skin
Dullness and signs of early aging
Even for healthy skin, microbiome-supporting skincare offers preventive care and enhances natural glow and resilience.
Safety and Science First
Every product used or recommended by Dermat India is:
Clinically tested for Indian skin types and climates
Free from harsh chemicals that disrupt the microbiome
Designed for long-term use with no rebound effects
Backed by scientific studies on probiotic and postbiotic effectiveness
We aim to create solutions that are not only effective but in harmony with your skin’s biology.
Conclusion: Gentle, Smart, and Future-Ready Skincare
The future of skincare lies in working with the skin’s natural biology, not against it. Probiotics and postbiotics represent a shift from aggressive treatments to supportive, biology-respecting care that helps the skin thrive.
At Dermat India, we’re proud to bring this science to our patients and clients, offering skincare that is effective, intelligent, and aligned with the body’s natural wisdom. Whether you're dealing with skin problems or simply want healthier skin, microbiome-based care is the future—and it starts here.

Antimicrobial Glass Powder Market growth driven by healthcare industry demand
Tumblr media
The Antimicrobial Glass Powder Market is experiencing notable momentum as healthcare systems worldwide prioritize infection control, cleanliness, and antimicrobial efficacy in clinical environments.
The Healthcare Industry’s Pivotal Role
The global healthcare sector has long been at the forefront of infection prevention and control. In recent years, however, the urgency to adopt advanced antimicrobial materials has skyrocketed. Hospitals, clinics, and laboratories face an ever-growing need to combat resistant pathogens and minimize healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). This has catalyzed the use of antimicrobial glass powder, a solution that blends the effectiveness of silver-based or copper-based antimicrobial agents with durable glass matrices.
By embedding these powders in various medical applications—such as coatings for hospital walls, equipment surfaces, and even in ventilation systems—facilities are enhancing the hygiene of critical spaces. Additionally, this material’s non-toxic nature and long-lasting efficacy make it ideal for high-touch surfaces and patient-care zones.
Key Drivers of Market Expansion
Several compelling factors are responsible for the sustained growth of the antimicrobial glass powder market, particularly in healthcare:
Rising Incidences of HAIs: Hospitals are investing heavily in materials that reduce the survival and spread of pathogens on surfaces.
Stricter Regulatory Norms: Many countries are implementing health and safety mandates requiring antimicrobial coatings in clinical environments.
Technological Advancements: Continuous innovations are leading to more efficient formulations that are easy to integrate into existing materials.
Increased Awareness Post-Pandemic: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for sterile environments, boosting the adoption of hygiene-supporting materials.
Together, these drivers are building a compelling case for widespread adoption.
Product Applications in Healthcare Settings
Antimicrobial glass powder is incorporated into numerous healthcare-related materials. Its most common applications include:
Medical Device Coatings: Surgical tools, diagnostic machines, and other medical devices are coated with antimicrobial materials to ensure long-term sterility.
Wall and Surface Panels: High-traffic areas like ICUs and waiting rooms benefit from surface coatings containing antimicrobial glass powder.
Air Filtration and HVAC Systems: When used in filters and vents, the powder helps kill airborne microbes before they circulate.
These applications not only improve infection control but also reduce the frequency and cost of sanitation.
Market Growth Across Regions
Regionally, North America leads in adopting antimicrobial glass powder in healthcare infrastructure due to advanced healthcare systems and stringent regulations. Europe follows closely, driven by initiatives to combat antimicrobial resistance. The Asia Pacific region, with its rapidly expanding healthcare infrastructure, is expected to show the fastest growth over the next decade.
In India and China, where hospital-acquired infection rates have raised significant public health concerns, antimicrobial materials are increasingly being incorporated into healthcare construction and retrofitting efforts.
Strategic Collaborations and Investments
Numerous companies are entering strategic partnerships and investing in R&D to produce innovative antimicrobial glass powder formulations. For instance:
Healthcare-specific solutions are being developed in collaboration with hospital architects and interior designers.
Public-private partnerships are funding research into eco-friendly, non-toxic antimicrobial solutions.
Startups are targeting niche applications such as dental instruments and mobile hospital units.
These collaborations have not only diversified the product offerings but have also accelerated market penetration across specialized medical sectors.
Challenges and Limitations
Despite strong market drivers, there are challenges to address:
High Production Costs: The inclusion of metals like silver can make the material more expensive.
Lack of Awareness in Developing Markets: Many healthcare facilities, particularly in low-income regions, are unaware of such innovations.
Integration Barriers: Retrofitting old buildings and surfaces can be labor-intensive and time-consuming.
However, with falling production costs due to technological advancements and increasing government support, these hurdles are expected to diminish over time.
The Future Outlook
The trajectory of the antimicrobial glass powder market looks promising, especially within the healthcare sector. As health systems continue to prioritize infection prevention and patient safety, demand will likely remain robust.
Advancements in nanotechnology may soon enable even more potent and cost-effective formulations. Moreover, the push toward green and sustainable healthcare infrastructure is aligning well with the non-toxic and durable nature of antimicrobial glass powder.
With more regulatory frameworks advocating for built-in hygiene solutions and a growing focus on future pandemic preparedness, the adoption of antimicrobial glass powder will likely shift from being an optional enhancement to a healthcare standard.
