Essie, being Essie and terribly insecure- something brought on by a lifetime of cruel comments about their appearance- muttered,“ ‘m not that p-pretty…”, their breath hitching part way through their half hearted disagreement when he ghosted over a particularly sensitive spot.

Jack didn’t stop, instead repeating,“Yes, you are, say it, say you’re pretty, babydoll.”

“Jaaack…” they whined in protest, far too embarrassed to even say something that complimentary of themself.

“Say it or I stop touching you.”

After a moment of silence and pause by Jack, he heard Essie reluctantly mutter, “… I’m pretty.”

“Good. I am gonna get that through your head, if it’s the last thing I do- You. Are. Pretty.”

Momentarily dissociated from the heat of the moment, a rare thought of self acceptance, somewhere in the back of Essie’s brain occurred: ‘he thinks I’m pretty. I’m pretty.’
