End of Days, 1999 - ★★★½

Me when the-Devil-in-Gabriel-Byrne pisses black tar against a brownstone stoop so it’ll spill all over the sidewalk & street then lights it on fire to kill some guys: “Oh my god, yes! Yes! Yes!” [pumps fist in air] Me when Arnie tearfully asks for God’s divine intervention just before the action climax: “BOOOOOOOOO”

Se7en by way of The Omen and Rosemary’s Baby, with a helping of the kind of blockbuster action setpieces one expects for Arnie. AKA, primo shlock fodder! Especially for the first hour, as things get a bit saggy in the second, once all the secret Satanists raising & grooming the heroine are toast. Gotta love the Y2K millenarian fervor that permeates the movie, though since it’s the 90’s, there’s still a surprising strain of religious earnestness hanging around the edges. 

This has higher highs than I remember for The Ninth Gate, but I wish this was closer to that movie’s sordid vibe. Like: if the whole plot is about the Devil getting a specific gal preggo at a specific hour, go sleazy and have the two protags hook up as a desperate swing to foul the plot! Then a twist where the prophecy was misunderstood & that was the Devil’s antichrist baby-recipe the whole time, & maybe Arnie has been the sleeper cell from Hell all along. Just go full trash-mode with it. Udo Kier is in this, the movie clearly knows the shlock door is open!

Some very odd theology on display anyway, a mix of campy & baffling. (Who else but Thomas Aquinas himself as a character who’s apparently some kind of ancient prophet slash immortal highlander?) Sincerely do love the idea that the byzantine mess of modern timekeeping is the way it is due to constant adjustments to work backwards from making a celestial prophecy line up with an arbitrary time & date. Daylight savings is now part of the Satanist plot!

There’s these “NY2K: where will you be?” signs for New Year's Eve up all over every New York exterior, which I really hoped meant there’d be some hell on earth by the end, probably with some gotcha to then stuff the hell-genie back in the bottle. But no, I was not thinking of this in the mindset of the right century: they meant Arnie stops being atheist just in time to go to heaven lol
