98/100⠀ ⠀ My birth certificate is a hot mess; my middle name is XXXX’d out. My parents argued about it. My dad wanted it to be Jean, and spoke first and loudest in the registry office so that’s what they wrote. Two seconds later he walked across the hall to chat with one of his buddies and my mom convinced the woman typing the form to change it to Jane. ⠀ But I didn’t agree with either of them, especially with their choice of my first name, Cynthia. They called me Cindy. I can’t explain it, but that word has always felt like nails on a chalkboard, except the chalkboard is my skin. It’s not their fault, I just never felt like a Cindy. At 13, I adored @CyndiLauper (that hasn't changed) and wanted to switch my spelling to be like hers. My parents forbade it. Through my teens, I tried on Cynthia, but that wasn’t me. I tried CJ. I tried a lot of stuff on. None of it fit until I found Rubi, and it felt like exactly who I was. ⠀ I’ve been Rubi almost twice as long as I was Cindy. My family were the hardest converts, it took my dad almost 10 years to call me Rubi. Most of my post-high school/college friends have no idea about my membership in the Secret Society of Cindys. I don’t ever talk about it; there isn’t much to say. Recently, a made a new friend named Cindy. I opened our friendship bluntly asking her how she felt about her name. She didn’t miss a beat telling me she hated it, and recently came out as Cate.⠀ When I took hubby’s last name, a friend came down hard on me. “I never thought you, of all people,” she poked, “would be so old fashioned and patriarchal.” I explained that I was making a choice between my father’s last name and my husband’s, and mostly I liked the way Rubi McGrory sounds. ⠀ The weirdest thing about changing my name is having completely different initials.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #saymyname #secretsocietyofcindys #truecolors #cyndilauper #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2018 #the100dayprojectOP #objectpermanence #significantobjects #stuff #tradingcard #tradingcards #affinitydesigner #virtualcabinetofcuriosities #art #autobiography #illustration

Object Permanence and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Object Permanence ADHD; There are some differences between children with object permanence and those with ADHD. Many of the studies on object permanence in children focus on infants. The average age at which children with ADHD are diagnosed is seven years old. In contrast, some children with ADHD do not exhibit any object permanence issues. This is a problem for parents.
What is object permanence ADHD?
Object permanence is a psychological concept first observed in infants. It refers to the ability of an object to remain unchanged or unmoved, even when hidden. This ability is thought to be one of the early stages of symbolic understanding and pretend play. Furthermore, this ability contributes to language and memory development. Adults with ADHD may have difficulty understanding obj. permanence, a cognitive characteristic associated with many ADHD symptoms. For instance, people with ADHD may have difficulty locating objects hidden in their environments. While it may seem easy for them to remember a picture of a certain object, they may find it impossible to find it if the object is not visible. Object permanence is a key milestone of childhood development, but for people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, it may be not easy to maintain it. For people with this disorder, this may affect their ability to follow treatment plans, organize tasks, and maintain relationships. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about four percent of adults and nine percent of children suffer from this condition. It may also cause a person to lose objects regularly. Read the full article

"Condoleezza Rice" is trending... I still remember when, in the midst of Operation: Iraqi Clusterfuck, she went to Russia, to call Putin onto the carpet for invading Georgia. Still crazy after all these years... #ObjectPermanence #TheoryOfMind vs #Idiocracy #Oligarchs

Had a dumb and funny objectpermanence hickup today again. ADHD be fun. I was in VC with my best friend, gaming a bit, ordered food and stayed on VC without gaming until my food arrived. I got my food, started a movie and started to eat. Made a random comment to myself about the movie, suddenly heard his voice trhough the headphones and got really startled. It had been completely wiped from my memory, that we've still been on VC. I did something else and completely forgot until I was reminded.

Review: If You, Then Me by Yvonne Woon
Summary: Xia is stuck in a lonely, boring loop. Her only escapes are Wiser, an artificial intelligence app she designed to answer questions like her future self, and a mysterious online crush she knows only as ObjectPermanence.
And then one day Xia enrolls at the Foundry, an app incubator for tech prodigies in Silicon Valley.
Suddenly, anything is possible. Flirting with Mast, a classmate also working on AI, leads to a date. Speaking up generates a vindictive nemesis intent on publicly humiliating her. And running into Mitzy Erst, Foundry alumna and Xia’s idol, could give Xia all the answers.
And then Xia receives a shocking message from ObjectPermanence: He is at the Foundry, too. Xia is torn between Mast and ObjectPermanence—just as Mitzy pushes her towards a shiny new future. Xia doesn’t have to ask Wiser to know: The right choice could transform her into the future self of her dreams, but the wrong one could destroy her.
My thoughts: Wiser is an app I could have really used in my teen years. In fact, I wouldn't mind having Wiser now. Decision making is so difficult sometimes and in this app, the artificial intelligence can definitely help with life choices through the information it gathers and logic. Xia is smart and driven, but sometimes she could benefit from some good advice. I really liked the AI part of the plot and it certainly had me thinking beyond the page and wondering about what we could have in the future.
The tech wasn't the only thing that had me thinking. Once in a while, there were exchanges that spoke to me. One character does something that they aren't proud of and in a message explains it this way:
"I like to think of myself as a good person, but then I do things like this and I wonder if my "goodness" is just a story I tell myself so I don't have to own up to the fact that maybe I'm just like everyone else--good when it suits me, and less good when it doesn't."
This was a book that kept my attention, but sometimes it was because there was a train wreck about to happen and it was hard to look away. The author pushed it a bit with how badly Xia messes up. The series of bad choices she makes really began to strain my belief. She even has multiple friends trying to intervene and she ignores all logic. That was one thing that distracted me. She's highly intelligent so it was difficult to believe some of the things she was doing and allowing although in real life, it's true that sometimes people seem to be on similar dangerous paths and cannot be reasoned with at all.
With all of the chaotic things going on in Xia's life because of her behavior, that left only a small amount of time on the pages for her relationships. The virtual relationship she had prior to arrival at the school seemed somewhat plausible, but the in-person time is pretty limited with both of the love interests so the romance seemed rushed.
Recommendation: Get it someday if you are a fan of contemporary books with a technology plot line. That part was the most intriguing for me. It's probably not one to grab if you're looking for a romance or rom-com though.

Two new books publishing today that I’m so excited to read next. Do you try to read books on their pub day? Thanks @ummyvonne for a copy of If You, Then Me and @getunderlined for a copy of Six Crimson Cranes. Swipe through to see the cover photos. Both of these are my next reads and I’m so excited to get into them because they are both stories I would totally love. First up is If You, Then Me by Yvonne Woon: It’s a contemporary YA story about Xia who’s pretty lonely and bored. She talks to an AI app she’s designed to ask her future self questions. She also has a mysterious online crush known as ObjectPermanence. When Xia enrolls in an app incubator in Silicon Valley, she starts flirting with a classmate but she also learns that ObjectPermanence is there as well. It sounds geeky and romantic and I’m excited to see what happens to Xia and who she chooses. The other book is Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. It’s a YA fantasy about Shiori, a princess with forbidden magic. When she goes out of control on her betrothal day, her evil stepmother banishes here and turns her brothers into cranes threatening Shiori with her brothers’ deaths if she spoke of this to anyone. It sounds adventurous and beautiful and sounds like such a beautiful fairy tale retelling. I cannot wait! Are you excited for either of these stories? They’re out today! https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ_iqp9r8lC/?utm_medium=tumblr

96/100⠀ ⠀ We spotted a pot plant (not the one we’d recently used) growing on the side of the road. When I say “side of the road,” I don’t mean hidden away behind some brush, I mean right there, on public beach land where hundreds of people –even cops--drive by daily. The four of us encircled it, performing a full examination to confirm our original diagnosis that there was a marijuana plant one inch from the road. It was about 5 feet high, no buds, lots of leaves. Immediately we were all botanists, despite our recent English and Journalism degrees. We debated the probability that this weed was self generated vs cultivated by humans (specifically ones that lived across the street), since it was actually growing in sand—which was clearly great for the thicket of reeds that lived on the beach, but questionable for such a vital crop. Someone could’ve thrown a seed out of their car window and it took, there were small wildflowers at there as well, so there is some fertile soil. Our discussion moved to what we should do about it. We decided that standing around it was most likely to draw attention to it and us, so we pinched a leaf off and walked back to the house. Two of us felt that we should do nothing but keep a watchful eye on the plant. Two of us wanted to wait until dark and pull it up—knowing it was useless with only leaves and no buds. Like a hung jury, we tried to bring the others over to our side. Then we got distracted playing games and listening to music. I uncharacteristically hid all of my belongings. We went back the next morning and the plant was gone. Like we never saw it, like it never happened. ⠀ But remember I said we plucked a leaf off? One of us put the leaf in a book for safe keeping. I would’ve sworn it was a thesaurus, although my first choice would’ve been “Leaves of Grass.” My brother claims it was Gay Talese’s “Honor Thy Father” and further, he asserts that 25 years later it still exists within the pages of that same book. I need photo evidence.⠀ ⠀ #decriminalize #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2018 #the100dayprojectOP #objectpermanence #significantobjects #stuff #leg #virtualcabinetofcuriosities #art #autobiography #illustration #lega
