I always have a hard time making lists, especially lists of favorites because there are far too many to remember, and I had to set a rule for myself to narrow it down. Pick things that stayed with me. That’s it. So, these are the ones that made me think or feel or put me in a weeklong introspective funk.

Books

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield. My most recently finished read. Both @sosh022 and @waxwing-saint recommended this to me and it’s been years since any book has hit me as hard as this one did. The love, the frustration, the inevitability, every page felt so real. Some days I managed a whopping 30 pages but most days it was 2-8. The words were just too good to let them fly by without holding onto them for a little while.

Just Kids by Patti Smith. I’ve been a fan of her music since I was a kid so when I picked up this memoir I was only familiar with that and her poetry. It’s a story of her youth and friendship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe, and her writing is so compelling that her reminiscences filled my head and heart as only a poet could. Highly recommend even if you don’t know her music.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. I bought this the year it was published and I would read it at least once a year for years afterwards. When the movie came out, I couldn’t see it, and I still haven’t seen it, even though I think this year might finally be when I do. The story is just too close to me.

There There by Tommy Orange. Stories about clashing identities, of being a part of two worlds and also neither, are always very interesting to me. And this one was just so visceral in its anger and sadness, it swallowed me up.

Nightshift by Kiare Ladner. Ok I’m cheating a bit here since I haven’t finished it yet, and I don’t normally recommend books I haven’t finished, but this book makes me squirm and I need others to squirm with me. Have you ever met someone and became instantly obsessed with being their friend (and maybe more) and when you did, you got caught up with that feeling that you’re finally being true to yourself but maybe also molding yourself into someone you’re not? That’s this book. And it’s a drama so the discomfort and stakes feel higher. I have no idea how it’s going to end, but I’m probably going to do more squirming and cringing in self-recognition along the way.

Fics

i’ll take the desert, you take the coast by @searidings. Supercorp. I absolutely adore this fic, I love all of searidings’ fics, but this one blew me away when it was first posted and it still does. I love a Lena that holds a post-reveal grudge. I love that she holds onto it for so long. It’s beautiful and sad and angry and I reread it every few months.

Vertigo by Yoshiyuki_Ly. Fleurmione. This fic inspires strong feelings in people, and given the ending, I can understand why. Fleur is a Slytherin and she’s got major childhood trauma and her characterization is colder and harder than we’ve ever seen her. But the hesitant romance that builds with Hermione is so sweet and real, it’s one of my favorites. There’s also a sequel on ffn if you’re interested.

Falling Towards Something (It Might Just Be You) by @thewaywedo33. Fleurmione. Another take on a darker/grey Fleur. A bit angsty, character driven, and you’ll have so many questions about what’s going on in the wider world, but all that really matters is that this Fleur can’t stay away from Hermione even though they’re not really on the same side, and I love their gradual acceptance of it, until it all comes to a head and choices have to be made.

Personal Jesus by @perfectly--random. Fleurmione. A non-magical AU that hits you in the gut and I won’t say anymore because it’s just that good. Wonderful angst.

The Arctic Station by @foragewrites. Supercorp. One of my favorite Supercorp premises is post-reveal angst and eventual reconciliation, and this fic does it so well, all couched in a stranded/survival story. It’s amazing.

atm its probably like Wenclair from wednesday cause they are a vibe and I'm having fun writing for them. I'm having some fun with it.

Then we also have like Smugbug but that's less of a ship more two charaters I'm lowkey obsessed with and while Lisa wouldn't be caught death in any kinda relationship they work well together. it also helps that my fave fic of this ship she spends most of the time inside of taylors head and dreams. it's kidna odd but you know, I'm obsessed so we have it at that.

and last maybe like Bellice, cause bella definantly could do better than the discoball of sadness she ended up with. and honestly Alice got two hands for her and Jasper. it be fun if bella's power also made her kinda invisible to her future vision and it can just be highjinks

2. first ever ship:

I can't really remember back to like the late 00's but I think that I started out with Fleurmione all they way back then. Even now like who doesn't like two smart as fuck witches compete and then work together later on. like also while the french on most works is just accented english but it's kinda funny so I'm also taking that.

fanfic definantly made most of that ship work as the cannon even then was rather lacking and upon reflection fucked up.

3. last song:

on my phone it would have been "Out Of The Frying Pan And Into The Fire" from the bat out of hell musical. I watched it live a couple years ago live and got nostaligc about it earlier today.

4. last movie:

I think it was like the seventh fast & furious movie, maybe the sixth. it's pretty fun if you turn off any critical thinking and just take it as they serve it.

For book it would be Gideon the 9th but I've been on that for a while and my focus doesn't seem to be allowing me to finish it but I'm trying! for fanfic it's something from ted lasso between him and Trent cause I binged that show in a week and they also live in my head now.

C3E53 of critical role, aka post-applebee solstice day two. chetney getting reaquaninted with his ex and shits still fucked on exandria.

6.) What's a femslash ship you feel like you're the only shipper of?

I'm so glad you asked this one, this is the one I most wanted to be asked!

Ginny Weasley/Gwenog Jones. I need more of it. Two lady athletes?? Yes please. Also after reading a Sneguochka fic, I headcanon Gwen as Slytherin. So you get a nice Gryffindor/Slytherin couple if you follow that. Plus a shared love of flying! You can give 'em a fun ole age gap. And like!! Teammates to lovers?? Or RIVALS TO LOVERS. Imagine if they were Quidditch rivals! Or even rival teammates to lovers?? Or or! Maybe after retirement it could be coach/player???? So many options and all are great.

Also with Gwenog being a big Quidditch star I think it would be super fun if Ginny's most well known relationships were with Harry (Boy Who Lived) and Gwenog (Quidditch Queen.) And her swearing up and down she's not a fame whore even if it looks that way LOL.

Anyway, please for the love of all that is holy and unholy, more Ginny and Gwenog please and thank you.

12.) What's your absolute favourite femslash ship(s)? The all-timers.

Omg so. Ginny/Luna (Linny) is a classic. Probably the softest ship I will ever sail, y'know? But also: Fleurmione. Fleurmione is 10/10. Two fierce, competent, bold, loyal ladies!!!! Also: throwing Pansy at them is fun, too. Ginsy, Pansmione, even Lunsy! But I think my top of the top have to be Linny and Fleurmione due to my love of them and also the fact that I've read several great fics. So it's like I love them in theory and in practice.

13.) Your guilty pleasure femslash ship?

I'm gonna kinda skew this question a bit from what I think its spirit is. Idk that I have anything that could properly be called a guilty pleasure.

I will say ships I love in theory and have enjoyed in practice, but feel like I need to see more of would be Cissamione and Minmione!! SWEET, LOVELY AGE GAPS YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU. I genuinely need a good Hermione/Minerva romance and I don't want to write it myself haha. I feel like there's so much potential yet to explore in both cases and I have such a THIRST for it.

Others I love in theory but haven't seen much of, if at all, in practice:

Ginny/Gwenog (as stated in # 6)...I at least wrote one myself, so I'll give myself a pat on the back for that one.

Ginny/Rolanda. Hello excuse me. Age gap. Athletic ladies. But also: TEACHER/STUDENT. GIMME GIMME GIMME. Someone please have mercy on me and feed me the Ginny/Hooch goodness.

Hermione/Ginny. I know it's out there but I've not read much that has really satisfied what I'm looking for with them. A few, don't get me wrong. But I need all the good angst and inner turmoil! I wanna see their fierceness clash. And the difficulty of not only moving from friends to lovers, but moving from friends to lovers when one person used to date the other's brother. Gimme the drama and the mess, I need it.

Hermione/Lavender. This is a new one for me and I'm obsessed. The idea of them both being exes of Ron. Having been jealous of each other. And being so different on the surface and coming to appreciate those differences!!!! So much potential and one I might explore myself one day.

16.) Are you there any characters that headcanon as being lesbian or otherwise wlw without having a ship in mind for them?

Hahaha. Everyone in HP is gay. No, I am not taking questions or critique at this time.

Let's do a little rundown:

Ginny: full-fledged lesbian, but I will accept bisexual. But mostly I just think Ginny and Harry taught each other that they are hella gay.

Hermione: tend to see as more asexual or demisexual, and maybe biromantic leaning more homoromantic I think? I see her being a very sexual (even kinky) person but she has to have that connection first.

Luna: asexual, panromantic, polyamorous.

Tonks: hella queer in every single way.

Fleur: another pan queen.

Pansy: she's tried everything on for size and doesn't quite have it figured out but she's definitely for the ladies, if you know what I mean.

Minerva: lesbian as heck

Narcissa: bi baby

Lily: ...also bi.

FLEURINNY - SHIP IT

What made you ship it?

In Half-Blood Prince, chapter 5 ("An excess of Phlegm"), Ginny says this:

“A cow,” said Ginny, nodding. “But Bill’s not that down-to-earth. He’s a Curse-Breaker, isn’t he, he likes a bit of adventure, a bit of glamour... I expect that’s why he’s gone for Phlegm.”

I mean, come on. My girl Ginny is fucking jealous. In fact, two books earlier, she doesn't seem all that interested in bashing Fleur. In Goblet of Fire, chapter 23 ("The Yule Ball"), she's quite elated to see Fleur turning down Ron. She laughs about it!

“He — er — just asked Fleur Delacour to go to the ball with him,” said Ginny. She looked as though she was fighting back a smile, but she kept patting Ron’s arm sympathetically.

Those are the crumbs canon gives us. And they are more than enough for my little gay heart! What's not to love? Little sister obsessed with her older brother's wife? The tragic potential is absolutely rife with these two!

Personality-wise, we have two women who are both quite strong-headed and opinionated, from different cultures and backgrounds but also meeting in the middle, with Fleur marrying Bill. Of course, the dynamic could also do without Bill playing a role in it, but, so what? I like it when things are fucked up. Sue me.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

French/Brit, they're lesbians your honour, but also one of them is married to the other's brother, TRAGIC, two hot strong-headed women who hate-fuck but also??? fall in love??? more please.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

This ship is barely enough of a ship for there to be discourse about it! That's the fucking tragedy. Like, excuse me, what do you mean 56 works? And I alone am responsible for 5% of those! Fleurmione (love them but come on, they make less sense than Fleurinny) has 1,010 works. PLEASE GIVE ME MORE FLEURINNY!

This AU is basically the queens in high school. I like to think of it as having a fifties aesthetic but not necessarily fifties bc… I was too lazy to google slang and mannerisms but the spirit is there! My favorite thing about this AU is the dialogue— I just think it is really free-flowing and just gives no fucks.

The Six Librarians and… - Six the Musical

This AU has a special place in my heart for so many reasons. It contains the first multichap I ever finished, was the first big AU crossover I ever undertook, and got me through the hell that was 2020-21. Anyway, it’s based on this TV series called ‘The Librarians’ (which I highly recommend, especially if you’re into legends, myths, and chaotic adventure). The Queens are reincarnated as the next Librarians and go on a series of adventures with their stressed-out Guardian Micah who's just doing her best to keep them alive.

This started out as a goddamn oneshot and now look where I am. Anyway, I took the scrappy!mira headcanon and made it slightly angsty. I have no regrets. I tried something a little different with my writing style (aka I wrote in present tense and used contractions in the narration among other things) and I really liked how it turned out!

Shifters - Six the Musical

The muse smacked me upside the head with this AU idea in the form of an out-of-context snippet that just spiralled from there. I love Anne and Catalina’s relationship in this because they have obviously been through some shit so it shows. Ugh, my heart.

The Bend and Snap - Harry Potter

This is a Fleurmione fic that I started writing when I was in the clutches of my Legally Blonde the Musical obsession. I really enjoyed the worldbuilding of this and figuring out how magical law would play into this. (Also JKR sucks, I’m just putting that out there. -_- )

This is my first polyamorous fic and I took an impromptu hiatus from it before finishing it in a frenzy at like, 2 or 3 in the morning during the last semester of my senior year.

I’m keeping this one out of the FW tags because it’s a stretch.

Jealousy. Fleur abruptly changes plans during the Battle of The Seven Potters when she realizes she’s the only one she trusts to protect Hermione, but after fighting off Voldemort himself they’ve missed their portkey. With a long thestral ride to think and Fleur’s marriage of convenience only days away, everything has just got Hermione feelin some type of way. Same girl, same.

Things are a little angsty today, but to be fair, the prompt was jealousy, so idk what you expected. There is a lot going on for Fleur as an individual that we couldn’t include because...well, spoilers. But also for Hermione, who won’t hear the word ‘mate’ come out of Gabrielle’s mouth for another four days and who has no idea that the frustrated feelings she has for the ever-confusing Fleur are something much, much more than what she currently understands them to be. Time to start screaming about Veela (with a capital V, as in, the language) under the cut:

cationix is a true hero for putting up with my absolutely feral obsession with this idea that veela vocal cords are different from human vocal cords. She’s such a hero that she even agreed to making both Fleur’s maternal and paternal grandmothers pureblood veela to keep her closer to the biology necessary to be able to harmonize with herself and physically speak the language like other veela. Is it heavy-handed? Yes. Is it ruining the fic? Probably. Do I care? I do not. Am I a total nerd about it? Best fuckin’ believe. If anyone else is a nerd and wants to be nerds together, my ask box is open.

(Oh gosh, this one. Beautiful. Angsty. Passionate. Hello?? I raved about this for an entire week, and had to reread it twice after reading it the first time. I think this one is definitely one of the best. Rated M for My Favorite and MMMM.)

Summary: Hermione detested failure. She hated entering a new situation where she wasn’t absolutely confident in her abilities to succeed. Dating women was one such new situation. She decided to arrange a no strings encounter but was not prepared for the feelings and memories it dredges up, feelings she thought she’d buried after she lost touch with a certain Frenchwoman.

(Hello angst-trip! But so, so worth it. Into that high stakes, high tension setting? Well this one takes the cake. Beautifully written in Hermione’s third person perspective. You won’t regret reading this one. Fleur Delacour has never been more alluring, magnetic, enigmatic.)

Summary: At the Battle of Hogwarts Hermione discovers Fleur is not who she thinks she is. As they are drawn together again and again, Hermione might just discover she herself is no longer the same person either.

Teams of three from nine wizarding schools all around the world will gather together to compete for a chance at eternal glory, fame, and money. It's here within the jade green walls and everblooming gardens of Mahoutokoro where Hermione and Fleur meet again. AKA an HP AU with HP characters. Voldemort never happened. Everyone is a seventh year student.

(Definitely one of the classic Fleurmione reads. Poetic, painful, intricate. Shell Cottage has never felt more like home, has never felt this safe before, has never felt this torturous. The fic is written in Hermione’s POV, but To Build A Home grants us a glimpse into Fleur’s perspective, at least that’s what I think! Not a lighthearted read but worth reading every word and so much more.)

She plans to take Hermione's virginity by the third task; Hermione has other plans.

I did my best to compile complete ones, except for the other two because I’m already so in love with those. I excluded the other classics like the ones you’ve mentioned but I’m pretty sure there are tons more out there, these are just the ones I’ve completed reading and tend to reread a lot. Fleur Delacour did not often cry, for she did not often have a reason to. She had many supportive close friends who adored her, and a family that would have died for her many times over. She achieved good, if not perfect, grades at school and showed great potential as a Healer.

Hermione Granger did not know anything about Fleur Delacour except that she was an unnaturally beautiful part-Veela who entranced boys just by existing, and that she was always surrounded by many less attractive girls. The blonde girl, with high cheekbones and a devastating jawline, struck her as the catty ‘popular girl’ archetype that she had despised so fiercely during her childhood. She had heard much gossip from her dorm-mates as well as snippets during classes and the library, and had to admit she somewhat understood their obsession. It wasn’t often that a girl that gorgeous strutted down Hogwarts’ hallways.

She had walked into the girls’ bathroom on the third floor when she heard quiet sobbing and whipped around to see Fleur Delacour, hunched over a porcelain sink, tears streaming down her cheeks and slowly dripping off her angular chin. Her entire body was shaking violently and she looked paler than usual, as though she was fading away. A small puddle was forming at the edge of the sink, growing larger by the second.

Hermione wondered idly what could have possibly broken the facade of poise that Fleur Delacour put up so efficiently, but then scolded herself for the thought. Obviously it had to have been something terrible - why was she being so uncaring? Beautiful girls always have life easier, though. She had learned that as a child, watching boys flock towards girls that weren’t her, watching those girls charm their way to what they wanted effortlessly with a pretty smile on their pretty faces.

With an inaudible sigh, she approached the taller, older girl and stood up on her tiptoes, placing a hand on her bare shoulder. “Are you alright?” She murmured.

Fleur wiped at her tears with the back of her hands roughly. “No.” She said frankly, her thick accent stretching out the word far longer than Hermione would have said it. “Not right now.”

Hermione stayed silent, one hand on Fleur’s shoulder, and they stood there in the silent little bathroom with the wind murmuring past the open window.
