Josephine and Tolland: Character Descriptions

Josephine of Tolero

A young Servant of the Stone, born in Calyp, who despite having known much loss in her life, believes in looking on the bright side. Starting off as a timid, mousy girl, unsure of her place in the world, Josephine spends her childhood trying to figure out her Aspect and how it can help others. After witnessing a devastating mold blight, she adopts a pygmy bee from a collapsed hive that comes to symbolize her strongest ideal:

“Don’t stress about what the right thing to do is, think about what would happen if you do nothing at all.”

She becomes a promising young Servant, but still finds herself longing for the warmth and familiarity of family that she hasn’t known since she was a child. Now a teen, one of her oldest friends, Cadoc, has asked her to marry him once he becomes a master of his field. She agrees, but while he finishes his apprenticeship she chooses to seek out her estranged mother so that she can attend her and Cadoc’s wedding. This leads her to leaving Tolero for the archipelago herself.

Tolland of Uxor

The youngest child of a power-hungry family line of renowned engineers in Kine. As smart as his mother and as ambitious as his father, he had a promising start. But fate isn’t a kind mistress. At the age of ten, he failed his Affixtion exam and proved himself to be the one and only Unaffixed in his family in generations. In an attempt to save face, his parents send him to the archipelago to work for his oldest brother, Shay, who’s become a renowned nexus engineer. He tries to use the opportunity to study nexus engineering, but is repeatedly cowed by his brother who fears Tolland won’t be able to keep up in their cutthroat world if he aims too high. The years of being undermined and dismissed bred a stubborn ideology into him:

“No one has time for useless things, so don’t be one.”

Here we go again.

The lantern light cast a glow up the side of Josephine’s face, saturating her in its tones of orange and umber. The letter in her hands was written so light and loopy Cadoc couldn’t make anything out despite sitting next to her on the step. Cadoc doesn’t say anything. Josephine got depressed every time she opened one of her mother’s letters, and he was starting to regret delivering them.

He picked up the lantern so he could move closer, catch a little warmth between their bodies where her hip sat flush to his. She allowed it, welcomed it even, and tugged her shawl of dandelion fluff over their laps together. 

“Mama, she…” Josephine began, then sighed deeply. Her head rested on Cadoc’s shoulder and, gladly, he took the initiative to rest his cheek upon her crown. Her brown hair was soft and smelled like tea with honey. “She wasn’t the same, after papa died.”

“It only makes sense. They were in love.” Cadoc said, trying to be reasonable, “‘May we meet again in the Place of Union’ and all that.”

“Yeah, I guess.” Josephine replied, as she rubbed the edges of her mother’s letter in her fingers. “Her letters have gotten so short.”

“She still sends money.” Cadoc pointed out, “You save every shell she sends you.”

Josephine fell silent, then she folded up the letter and simply held it in her hands, pinched between her thumbs and index fingers. She gave the paper one last little rub, then tucked it back away into its envelope. 

“I’d rather read about how she’s doing. Or even better, hear it for myself. She knows I’m a Sister, she brought me here herself before she left, I don’t need the money.” Josephine murmured, squeezing her eyes shut. 

“But you can’t just ask her to… what? Pay more attention to you?” Cadoc pointed out, “She’s your mother, it’s not within your right to do that.”

Josephine sat up, jostling the shawl across their laps and hitting Cadoc with a sharp stab of chill. “What does the Archipelago offer that she couldn’t find here?” 

“I don’t know, Jo, but you get sad every single time you open one of her letters.” Cadoc tossed up his hands, then gestured broadly to her, “What does she even say to you?”

“That’s just it. It’s like she hasn’t read any of my replies.” Jo crinkled the letter in her fingers, then with a huff of frustration, stuffed it into her satchel. “And it’s hard not to feel like… I’m just getting crossed off her to-do list.”

It was Cadoc’s turn to fall silent, at a loss for what to possibly say to console her. 

“...She’s your mother.” He pointed out again.

“I know! I–” Josephine bit herself off, then she’s up to her feet in a flick of her shawl. She yanked it over her shoulders with such vigor a few stray puffs flicked off the inside and whipped off away by the wind. “I know I don’t have a right to ask for more. But I still miss her, and I just wonder if she misses me too.”

“Well, why wouldn’t she miss you?” Cadoc got up to his feet too, snagging the lantern in his fingers on the way up. “You’re her daughter.”

“I… I don’t know!” She snapped, balling her fists to her chest, “But I know how I feel and it… It sucks!” 

Cadoc raised his hands, floundering for something to do. She wasn’t looking at him, not a word he said mattered. 

“She’s out there and I have a million questions for her but it feels like she just doesn’t–”

“Josephine,” Cadoc said sharply, “Don’t say things you know aren’t true.”

“But–But…” She turned on her heel, voice faltering. Her eyes were wet, forming slow beads at the corners until she rubbed them away with her sleeve. “I’m sorry. It’s just…”

Cadoc shook his head, “It’s fine. It’s late, you’re tired, and I shouldn’t have brought your mail so late.”

It was a flimsy dismissal, but he was never any good at dealing with irrational feelings. Especially when it drove people to say things they couldn’t possibly mean.

“Why don’t you let me walk you back to the church?” He offered, resting a hand on her upper arm. He needed to talk to Father Melvin anyway.

Josephine stepped away, then shook her head. “I’m alright. It’s not a far walk.”

“Come on,” He insisted, “you can never be too sure.” 

“I said I’m alright,” She insisted, “And I mean that. You’ve been working all day, so… go get some rest, okay?”

Cadoc fought down the flicker of frustration, then nodded. “Alright. Be safe, okay?”

Josephine nodded, her smile thin and her wave just a little too brief, “Goodnight, Cadoc.

And then she turns, stepping out of the light of his lantern and into the cool white moon. The sound of her steps faded away, muted by the mud, and Cadoc was left in her wake.

4. Mojmír, Moravian vampire that used to be a woodcarver (mid-late Great Moravian empire so like mid/late 9th century)

Mojmír belongs to @havrani-otec by the way!!

Cadoc going by Oleg traveled with Varyags to Moravia (nowadays southeast of Czech Republic). It was supposed to be just one of the stops on their trade route but Cadoc decided that his group should stay there for longer. His reason was a small village where he wanted to stir some conflicts and also a creature he found in the local woods at night. The creature was Mojmír, who used to be human just like the other villagers.

Cadoc's and Mojmír's relationship was full of intense hate-love. They were mostly arguing because of their different worldviews and even their differences as species- Mojmír being once human brought back to life, Cadoc not being human to begin with. Sometimes it seemed like they could sustain something like a relationship but then they'd go back to hating eachother to the bone (but still sleeping in the same bed y'know).

As the Magyars came, Cadoc left Mojmír and they've never seen eachother again.

(Since this part of lore is made through a dialogue, I don't really have much info to tell…yet)

5. Magyar raider István (early 10th century)

Magyars came and Oleg/Cadoc was threatened by the Magyars. As raiders they wanted him dead. Cadoc told them he's not a local (at least he tried to say that) and that he can fight. His ability to fight Cadoc showed almost immediately when he started attacking the villagers that used to be his neighbors. The raiders accepted him as their own and István became his guide. Cadoc manipulated the raiders to be even more violent that before they met him, the only raider that wasn't affected by Cadoc's ideas was István.

István was really nice to him, he tried to teach Cadoc (that used to be called Oleg and was called Oguz by István) some Hungarian phrases. Cadoc found him annoying, he was killing villagers just if he was ordered by the other raiders to do so and not because he indulged in it. You could even call István a peaceful individual that rather wants to take care of horses and he didn't see Cadoc as a raider but only as a foreign visitor. Even though Cadoc didn't like him that much, he still did some acts of service for him and István interpreted that as acts of affection.

One day István started to protest to his fellow raiders that he doesn't want to kill anyone ever again. The wrath-blinded raiders decided to murder him for his disobedience. The night afterwards Cadoc decided to bury István's mutilated body and leave the Magyar raiders for good.

6. Romanian/Bijelo Brdo culture vampire Alin (mid 10th century)

As Cadoc left the Magyars, he travelled alone down south until he reached the south Carpathians. There, in the mountains, in an isolated cottage he found Alin. Cadoc just wanted to find some people but it didn't take long for him to realize that Alin was a vampire. Cadoc introduced himself as Oguz and told Alin that he can help them with tasks around their cottage. Alin knew from their first meeting that Cadoc/ Oguz is not a human.

When Cadoc realized that Alin is a vampire, he thought they'd be just like Mojmír and that he could feel that pure wrath and hatred once again, so he decided to attack Alin at night to test his theory. Unexpectedly for Cadoc, Alin didn't even try to fight back and just told him: “Do what you need to do, I don't deserve to live in the Lord's world anyways”. Alin used to be pagan before turning into a vampire and after the change converted to Christianity. They thought that the Lord gave them the vampiric second life as a second chance to undo their sins and believed that Cadoc had that chance too. Cadoc felt bad for Alin but also felt very “hungry” while looking at them, that actually was just a crush on them. He wanted to taste their blood but then felt bad because of thinking about hurting them because Cadoc saw them as weak. He stuck around Alins's cottage for almost a year, helping them with chores that required Alin being in direct sunlight. Cadoc even told Alin the truth about his name and the fact that he's not Magyar at the slightest.

One evening Cadoc proposed an idea to Alin of him staying there for good to protect them. Alin replied with: “I fear we shouldn't be together, Cadoc. We should rather contemplate our sins of the past separately. Then we can go to the kingdom of God together,” and told Cadoc to leave their home the next day.

I def think Nina and Cadoc would make a power couple. They would definetly have chemistry and both very ambitious. Cadoc is def would be Nina 's type. I think they relationship would start in a base of allies, maybe meet by work. But soon would be definitely a passionate relationship. And exclusive cause Nina is not here to play. 😉

Maybe they would fight for time to time but I think they would made up quickly.☺️

i started learning about werewolf/changing breed lore and brother i am COOKING!

this is my gaggle of silly funnies, clockwise order from top right:

- vega garcia is a wealthy glasswalker ragabash, fashionista and gay rights activist. she fights the wyrm through fighting against pentex and homogeneity inc (the conversion therapy corporation), and my other three ocs are hosted in the manor of her wealthy kinfolk father. while she’s not a billionaire, she’s got a healthy inheritance set for her if she doesn’t spend it willy nilly.

- daniel lepik is a corax wereraven, and he’s basically vega’s kept artist; she’s got a guilty pleasure thing about fancy gothic dresses, and daniel is amazing at making lace and other fabrics to turn into dresses, so she lets him live in her manor as long as he makes her stuff and helps her get info on local wyrm matters. he uses his rambles above weaving can be an offensive weapon.

- bella castellan is a galliard ex-black fury and a trans girl, born between a black fury and a kinfolk who she treated as basically a treasured pet (not anything nsfw i mean, more just she doted on him but didn’t let him Do Much). when bella came out as mtf, her mother advised her to leave the local caern, as while she was accepting, they also lived in the sept equivalent of terf island. after meeting with vega, daniel and cadoc, she decided to try joining the get of fenris with the help of cadoc’s father griffith.

- cadoc morgan is my last oc, a lupus-born get of fenris garou born from a drunken accident between his dad and a female wolf. he was raised by his werewolf dad, kinfolk aunt and his father’s drinking buddy, a secret nuwisha, and was trained pretty well as a young boy in how to act human. he really likes dancing, vibrating and stuff when he feels very excited, and he’s pretty clingy with his buddies. he can also sniff out wyrm taint due to a childhood encounter with a black spiral dancer.

PLEASE give Jo head pats and braid her hair, she LOVES it. She'll also insist she does your hair for you.

Tolland's hair, when he's an adult, is nearly to his knees and is a huge point of pride for him. That being said: Look, don't touch. Compliment him, he loves it.

Cadoc doesn't really have any strong feelings since he has his hair almost always buzzed super short. You will want to play with it because it's fuzzy and pokey, and if you ask nice honestly he might just let you.

Shay's hair is a goddamn work of art and if you touch it he WILL slap you. This man has so many different products that he uses, his hair is basically sculpted rather than groomed.

Mavis is Nullian and so rules for hair are a little different. You do not *EVER* touch a Nullian's hair unless you are their partner. Especially their streaks! It's considered extremely intimate, and Mavis carries that same sentiment herself.

—The Encyclopedia: Character Art (AI)

I've become obsessed with AI art as of late and wanted to see what it could do for my characters. Unfortunately, most of these platforms cannot recognize any BTS members so they have been left off of this list, but all of our OCs have had better luck (though they are not exactly what I imagine, they are close enough to give you an idea what my own head cannon looks like). I will update this as the story progresses and new characters get introduced.

Going insane over a thing I made up. Cadoc when he was in Moravia back in 9th century was mistaken for the god Radhošť/Radegast. They definitely made some wooden/stone statuettes of him and archeologists would interpret that as the god Radhošť or some different slavic god.
