I'm productive procrastinating on two other art projects I'm working on, so I added yet another OC to my NecroDancer custom sprite library.
I play as Melody a lot, but her different sprite animation made porting my past sprites to her feel wrong. So here's Maverie as Melody! Their names are similar and they have similar curly floofy hair, so she was a perfect fit. :]
I'm so unbelievably excited about the new DLC. One of my fave games of all time gets substantial new content after 5 years of silence? It feels surreal. Makes me happy to see familiar faces in the fandom again after all this time! :D
(How do these gifs get out of sync despite having the exact same frame timing? That's going to bother me, lol)

When Clip Studio Paint starts collapsing under the weight of all your adjustment and half tone layers, you know you’re doing something right.
I’m really proud of this one! :D The hair especially. It took way longer than it needed to, but it’s my personal project and I get to choose the snail’s pace.
Fun fact: The big star in the background is 3D! And the reason it’s normal map-ish colors is because I was using the object’s normals to try to make a cool material. I ran them through a vector transform, messed with like 2 settings, went, “Oh that looks sweet,” and just called it a day, haha.

Yee heckin haw, guess who learned how to make stylized shaders that can use multiple light sources? It is I! I needed to update my shader anyways since my previous one is like 9 months old and I had like 0 experience with Blender EEVEE back then.
Part 1 of Lightning Boy Studio’s toon shader tutorials over on YouTube explains how to use multiple lights, but the quick explanation is you have a pure red, green, and blue light, use a shader to RGB, separate RGB, and then use the separated channels as inputs for different parts of your shader. I recommend watching all the tutorials though, there’s some super neat tricks throughout!
I also added some very novice manual normal editing on her face. It’s probably easiest to notice when she’s turning into the shadows. The shading looks a little more smooth and intentionally placed, like in 2D art. Looks super crusty in viewport, but nice in the renders!

November 10th, 2020 Inspired by @mcnuggyy ‘s [polyamory art meme]
While these three aren’t technically polyamorous, Copper and Viviana (front two) are dating, and Maverie (back) is a quasi-platonic partner to both of them, so close enough. :P
Copper’s okay, they’re just slow to process affection, ahaha

!Video contains flashing colors!
Clip Studio Paint version 1.10.5 is out with a shiny new timelapse feature, and you heckin bet I tried it out immediately. I’ve always wanted to make more timelapse videos, but my wild zooming in and out, canvas flipping, and layer toggling would make that a Very unpleasant viewing experience. But with this I don’t have to worry about that!
Maverie was originally going to follow my “all my OCs are pansexual or asexual until proven otherwise” default, but soon after I redesigned her I realized I’d unknowingly given her a lesbian pride flag color palette. That sealed her fate as a lesbian, lmao

This meme was floating around my friend circle discord, and I was migraine-ing way too hard last night to work on 3D modeling, so I used it as an excuse to doodle instead. Joke’s on me though, because thanks to the “artist subconsciously mimics the facial expression they’re drawing” phenomenon, drawing so many screwed up expressions gave me a tension headache on top of the migraine :’)
OCs from left to right, top to bottom: Linnet, Elliott, Juniper, Copper, Kobi, Zasha, Makana, Maverie, and Squid

How come all my best topology jobs are from when I’m like, “Let’s just retopologize this face sculpt real quick so I can texture it without dying inside,” instead of when I’m actually trying? 😩 I mostly just wanted to focus on her head and hair, hence the plain bust from the neck down.
Jokingly complaining aside, here’s my OC Maverie again! If you couldn’t tell by her being the only OC I’ve drawn in the past few months, I’ve become attached to her character like static electrically-charged saran wrap. I’m just a sucker for soft, fluffy characters, it seems.
I think I’ll try to include wireframe renders for most of my 3D stuff from now on. Partly so I can show off my behind the scenes work, and partly because I’m a nosy bastard when it comes to 3D modeling stuff, so I’m paying it forward to my fellow nosy modelers, ahaha
Modeled in Blender 2.82, textured in Clip Studio Paint, rendered in Blender EEVEE

I think I’ve gotten stuck in a trap where if I can’t think of something interesting or dynamic to draw character(s) doing, then I just don’t draw. And since I’ve had exactly zero ideas for the past, like, two months, here’s just a plain ol drawing of Maverie in an alternate outfit so I don’t get too rusty :’)
I gave Maverie a lil snoot, because unlike my other noseless characters, it doesn’t really make sense for her not to have one? Linnet and Kobi are synthetic lifeforms who need less oxygen, Makana’s amphibious, Sylvia has something akin to spiracles, and Squid’s... a special case, but not having a nose as a typical mammal would be inconvenient, lol
Man, I still love characters with impossibly fluffy hair

I have so many neglected “living” OCs I want to draw, but here I go reviving a super old OC from the dead anyways
Her full name’s Vue Na Maverie, and literally any of those names is a valid name to call her. There aren’t really first, middle, last, or family names in her culture, you just get a bunch of names because why the heck not? I was originally going to call her by her “”first”” name Vue, but I sorta fell in love with the name Maverie, whoops. So I guess that’s what I’m going to call her primarily
Some side notes since they’re not visible here: She’s got those same tattoos on her right shoulder and back of her hand, and she’s got toe beans just like the little pink pads on her fingers. I’ll probably design her shoes or foot wraps or something eventually, since I feel her legs are a bit too plain design-wise
Ramblings about her personality and relationships below the read-more
-----
Speaking of accidentally falling in love with things, this is the third time I’ve revived an OC and immediately started unintentionally shipping them with other OCs, hah. Since I’m still character building her it’s not set in stone yet, but I think I’m making some kinda quasi-romantic polyamory hell triangle between her, Viviana, and Copper. Vivi and Copper are still romantically involved, but the relationship between them and Maverie is more queerplatonic. Maverie has no idea what her romantic or sexual orientation is, she just occasionally sees people and is like, “I wanna cuddle that person.” Her ideal queerplatonic relationship is like Friendship Plus™, where the plus is being closer physically and emotionally, living together, and maybe sleeping together (in the literal way, not euphemism-y way).
Also, I love the trope of “neurodivergent friends / found family make up for each other’s weaknesses by combining strengths,” and that very much applies to these three.
As a person, Maverie’s very generous, positive, and loves to help people, but she frequently gets stuck in her own head and can come off as aloof. While she’s lost in thought, she likes to come up with stories and to build worlds, but she doesn’t write her ideas out as much as she’d like because her organization skills are awful and turning thoughts into words is a constant struggle. Her creativity is a major factor in why she bonded with Vivi and Copper though, since Vivi loves drawing and character design and Copper loves writing and sculpting. Maverie a very cutesy and girly person, but in contrast, she loves stories that explore the dark sides of people, like thriller, murder mystery, and suspense genres.
Lastly, a silly fun fact: Maverie has a sort of typing quirk where, in casual text conversation, She Capitalizes The First Letter Of Every Word. That’s because in her native language, there are no spaces in between words, so she capitalizes most things out of habit . Words and sentences are separated by capitalization. It’s also a very... uncompressed language, so while you can get really detailed and leave little to no room for misinterpretation, it takes a lot of words to get there. If that sounds like ADHD’s worst nightmare, that’s because it’s ADHD’s worst nightmare. She fondly calls her native language “Word Anarchy,” because sometimes languages are just a mess.

[”Vue” on deviantART] April 13th, 2017
I was going through my old school journals recently, and I found a whole goldmine of cute art and OCs! So I wanted to start redrawing some. This design is from 2009.
This little fluffball is named Vue, pronounced like “voo.” I don’t remember much about her, but obviously she’s a medic. Hilariously, the one thing I do remember about her is once when I was drawing her at school, someone looked over my shoulder and asked, “Why doesn’t she have pants?” And I looked that person dead in the eyes and said, “She’s an alien, aliens don’t need pants.”
Lastly, a lot of her design elements ended up going into my OC Linnet.
