What would a 2903 exhibit look like at the MSI if he hadn't been moved to the IRM in the 90s?

Real talk, there wouldn't be a 2903 exhibit even in that event.

We've talked a bit about how 2903 isn't really what the MSI typically looks for in an exhibit. To recap, 2903 is not particularly notable, historically significant, or even rare as a preserved engine. He is Just Some Guy.

Our current theory on how he came to be donated to the MSI is that they had a general request for a steam engine out, same as they had for a submarine a decade before, and the ATSF (who were already sponsoring the model railroad) gave them 2903, one of several 2900's they had in storage and were trying to get rid of. The next year, the MSI were also given the opportunity to accept New York Central and Hudson River Railroad No. 999, who is a much better exhibit in every respect. But by that point, they already had this fuck-off huge steam engine on their lawn so what were they to do?

It's never been expressly stated anywhere, but I think that 2903 being a very late model steam engine compared to 999's much earlier model was at least a little bit of an excuse to have them both, but really I think they were just stuck with him at that point. I won't go so far as to say they'd rather not have had him at all, but that there wasn't much to truly say about him didn't do him any favors when the MSI decided to start moving their deteriorating outdoor exhibits indoors.

See, 2903 was really suffering from several detriments when it came time to figure out what to do with him. There wasn't much general information about him anywhere, he wasn't famous or well known or even particularly remembered, and he was heavy and big. Any one of those individual downsides would have left him outside, but unfortunately he had all of them.

Consider Pioneer's exhibit for a moment. Pioneer and his cars have an entire hall all to themselves. It was dug out underground and they were lowered into it with cranes. Together, their train weighs 208,061 pounds, but that's divided up between the three of them with Pioneer probably being a bit heavier than 505 and 570, obvs.

The reason they have a hall all to themselves is because they take up a lot of space and because there's enough interesting information about them to fill that space. The Pioneer Zephyr can carry an exhibit on their own and they're also not very heavy so the logistics of getting them underground were not so difficult.

Now consider 999's place in the Transportation Hall. She's probably a bit heavier than any one piece of the Zephyr train at 124,000 lbs, but she and her tender could be separated so moving her was not hard either, relatively speaking. The column was already taken out for 727 anyway. 999's also the smallest of the outdoor exhibits and comparatively takes up much less floor space.

She cannot, however, carry an exhibit on her own. Even knowing what we do know about her, there's still not enough information to fill more space than she actually occupies and so her exhibit is not only about her specifically but also steam engines in general. Moreover, her exhibit is also a smaller part of a larger tableau exhibit about transportation. She would never have been considered for a hall of her own.

And it bears remembering that U-505 spent another ten years on the lawn before they figured out how to lower his 1,120 tons underground.

So 2903, who takes up 1342 square feet, weighs 882,365 lbs, and barely has enough to say about him to fill a placard? It's tough to say goodbye, but there was just no place inside the MSI for 2903.

So if the IRM hadn't taken him?

I would hope that some railway museum somewhere else would have wanted him, but I'm not sure if a further (and necessarily smaller) museum would have been able to manage it logistically, let alone financially. Getting 2903 even as far as Union was also an immense undertaking. It took them ten days to pull him a mile along leapfrogged track to the nearest railroad.

Everything worked out for the best, though and 2903 is exactly where he's supposed to be.

With regard to Pegasus, it was that the birthday letter can be interpreted as Pioneer speaking of all streamliners as being his brothers, whether they are female or not. And this is ten years and many, many streamliners in (the letter was said to have been sent to at least a hundred other streamlined engines). It's very unlikely that all streamliners at that point were male. Pioneer has always felt his kinship to lie with his fellow streamliners rather than only with other diesels. So when he says it like he does in the birthday letter, it can taken as similar to the saying "all men are brothers".

(We've always thought it pretty bold that they did choose to call them brothers in this letter, which was marketing material for Pioneer's tenth anniversary. Train guys tend to be very insistent that engines are all female so to have the CB&Q refer to engines en masse this way is a Choice.)

Additionally, it's possible that an engine's gender shifts over time because the way they are perceived changes. That is, if Pegasus was perceived to be male originally because all shovelnoses up to that point were (and because her namesake was also male), that may have changed when she was put at the head of an all-female train (with its matching twin all-male train to really make the point).

How do engines view gender? Are there qualities they associate with gender (eg. Big wheels = masculine)?

For the engines themselves, gender is one of the more trivial aspects of their anthropomorphic experience. An engine's gender has no bearing on ability or their social status in the yard, it's just another thing they inherit as a consequence of being built by humans. They understand that gender is sometimes important to people, but why is beyond them and explaining it usually results in frustration on both sides of the conversation. It's just another one of those little human idiosyncrasies engines weren't meant to understand, they guess! In-universe, an engine's gender is determined by the way they are perceived by people. Sometimes they're boys and sometimes they're girls! We don't yet have any engines who don't fit into one of those two categories, but it's something we've talked about and more than likely something we'll be including with future characters. This also means sexuality (as far as human engines go) is as inconsequential as gender is. It's seen as somewhat unusual for engines to have a gender preference, though it's not entirely unheard of. 2903 for instance is about as straight as any engine is going to get, and even then I wouldn't say it's a hard and fast rule in his case.

From a purely meta perspective, our journey into vehicular anthropomorphism started with Thomas the Tank Engine, so the idea of making engines boys was never an odd one, and neither of us care for the antiquated opinion that "all engines are girls". Awdry didn't abide by that either, and he wrote that shit in the 40s! It's also this background with ttte that informs how we'll probably handle "gender nonconforming" engines (if there can be such a thing when gender matters so little to them) when we make them, as The Truck technically was a girl until it became The Truck and in-canon uses it/its pronouns. DJ even wrote a bit about The Truck for Engines In Sidings, and it's one of her best chapters.

Unless there are printed materials from the time period that help inform the decision, usually our creative process for determining a character's gender is vibes-based with some discussion to make sure we're not too heavily favoring male characters. 999 for example was nicknamed The Queen Of Speed during her record run, and is therefore perceived by people of the time to be a girl, so making her a girl is an easy choice for us. Pioneer's birthday letter refers to "brothers", the implication being that all streamlined engines of the time were boys, including Pioneer himself. This actually presented a problem when we were deciding what to make Pegasus, as she heads up The Train Of The Goddesses and would make more sense as a girl. This is where we used our powers of creative license to decide that not all engines need to have their gender informed by the written materials. It's a very freeing and flexible approach, and a process I quite enjoy!

Favorite OC: miss maia <3 honestly, since mind blind and that's when she's created..she definitely has that special place in my heart. and honestly, she's also in multiple universes right now (psst, wts and infamous psst) but, yeah; the favoritism is so clear but, yeah; i say she's my baby and i'm proud of her. ALSO, i have to add naya because yeah..i think her pinboard says everything hehe.

Newest OC: miss kendall monroe, she's the newest edition to the world of oc's on its own! she's my oc for circuit, and so far she hasn't been developed as much yet, but i can pinned down, she's a lego lover (outside the racing life ofc), very much a sunshiney but with a high kindred spirit to win definitely. still a tie on who she'll romancing but, roman is close up there hehe.

Oldest OC: lya toriezze. She's the first and oldest one i made when i first discovered IF's (aka twc mehe) and the one who's facing a lot of changes since then. But, yeah..she's the start of all of it..and she'll always be special. Definitely a self-insert at first, but she's grown to be quite a complex one today, 3 years later hehe!

Meanest OC: mean is quite a large word actually, but i think mean by history/story with good reason is definitely miss innes talavoire (a mage reborn!) but, the rest are not really mean, just wouldn't take anybody's shit and well...no filter. presenting, naya davis, and zephyr hudson! (there's a few, but..i think they're pretty mean but also with reason!)

So after watching a couple of videos I decided to make my own OC princesses for Disney. Most of them are black bc I'm not waiting on Disney; they want to keep Tiana a token so bad, well in my verse she isn't the only black Princess.

Itzel

Movie: Emperor's New Groove

Virtue: Generosity

Personality: Caring, responsible, moody, short-tempered

Love Interest: Kuzco

Storyline: The "girl next door" neighbor of Pacha, Itzel was a young woman who herded Llama so well she developed a reputation for being a llama whisperer. She was selected to be part of the Emperor's chosen brides but was rejected. In anger, and to defend the other candidates, Itzel insulted the spoiled king...and gets promptly kicked out of the palace. Later on, she finds out Kuzco was cursed into a llama. She poked fun at his predicament before realizing the power vacuum his absence would cause. She decided to help Pacha and Kuzco, and from there she and Kuzco learn they have more in common than they thought.

Princess Bron:

Movie: A Bug's Life

Virtue: Power

Personality: Spitfire, friendly, wary, resentful

Love Interest: Soar (OC)

Storyline: The sister of Atta and Dot, and the middle child of the Royal Family. A fire ant, Bron always knew she was an outcast among her peers. Bron fell fast for a rouge grasshopper named Soar, who unlike his peers he doesn't believe in mistreating ants. Together with Flik they hatch a plan to scare Hopper and his gang off the island forever. Bron also has trouble with Atta as the two have different opinions on how to handle the crisis. But after certain events the two sisters come to understand each other and eventually lead their people to freedom. At the end Bron and Saur leave to form their own colony but with bugs of all types.

Alma Mater

Storyline: Alma is the niece if Tow Mater (don't think too hard on it) who wanted to leave her town of Radiator Springs. When she encounters a stranger by the name Ligtning McQueen Alma believes she may fianlly found a way out of her sleepy decrepit town. But over the course of the film Alma gains a deeper appreciation for her heritage which helps her when she does go out into the big world. Alma inherited Doc Hudson's office, then left to pursue a career at CHROME. She also helped a Lemon named Lucia with her dreams of becoming a racer.

Movie: Cars Franchise

Virtue: Inclusiveness

Personality: Headstrong, stubborn, self confident, prideful, pensive

Love interest: Francesco Bernoulli

Storyline: Lucia was a young Italian woman with dreams of becoming a race car. The problem? She was a Lemon, and often was sickly. But she refused to let her condition pull her down. Studying and modifying techniques, she grew to become a name in the Lemon community as a talent. However when she submitted her application to several organizations she was turned down. She was very close to giving up until she met a pink Tow Truck named Alma. Befriending Alma, thr two would go on to help CHROME take down a conspiracy and, Lucia ends up forming her own league allowing Lemons and other "defect" cars a chance to pursue careers in racing.

Storyline: Originally a schoolteacher from Earth, Zephyr was captured by Zurg after she stood up to him when he tried to take over her town. She was very snarky, and wasn't the least bit intimidated by his posturing. Which confused the hell outta the Evil Emperor! She'd get rescued by Star Command and over the years, she and Zurg had one encounter after the other. But SOMEHOW to the shock of everyone Zurg was actually kinda liking her ferocity. And hard as Zephyr didn't want to admit, she did come to respect Zurg for his consistency. The two ended up secretly dating, and eventually secretly married. Now with a ton shit of power Empress Zephyr wanted to help the galaxy than to conquer it so she took on the role of the diplomat to make sure intergalactic war didn't break out.

Storyline: After losing her job Hazel is making ends meet doing odd jobs. She gets a gig babysitting for a couple's three year old daughter. One night after hearing some noise, Hazel discovers a secret room Boo's door...that leads to the Monster World. Encountering creatures who seem more scared of her than she is of them, Hazel is nearly caught but comes across Mike and Sully.. Together the trio and Boo must find the door to take them back into the human world. As Hazel uncovers more secrets, she learns that the monster world and her world aren't so different and changes her perspective.

In the Lightyear Universe Cosmica is a part of Izzy's team and is a diplomat of the Cosmic Council. In an alternate universe she was married to Old Buzz. Her death was a catalyst to his turn to evil.

While Anna and Kristoff were chased out of the castle, Temperance hid and snuck further inside. She reached out to Elsa and talked to her, but then they were accosted by guards. Returning to the castle Temperance pleaded for Elsa's freedom. It was then she learned of Hans plot to kill the royal family. Finding a freed Elsa, Temperance told Elsa what she had found and the two rush to stop Hans. After saving Anna, Arendelle is restored and Temperance is rewarded with a knighthood. idk if it's been asked already but: do you have any voice claims for the TFISSAB crew?

Hello!

No one has asked this yet, but it makes sense to. The structure of the letters - that Ray and I each write alternating letters as our respective characters - gives away that its a roleplaying game of a sort. Face and voice claims are quite common in those games.

As it happens though, Ray and I both have backgrounds that sort discourage getting too specific with any kind of work we'd have to outsource. Ray is an animator and so voice casting is something they were trained for in school. I studied game design and learned a lot of the same things they did. Basically that not only is it no use getting your heart set too specifically on a particular voice, but it's also limiting. It's better to go into a casting with an open mind because an actor could surprise you. You could miss out on a truly iconic voice for a character if you're too focused on casting, say, an Ann Margaret type. 'Cause after all, at the end of the day, she won't be Ann Margaret.

Not to say that we consider casting actively for this particular project (most of our engines are stationary displays and so what would we animate them doing? Maybe we could do a radio play, lol). Just that we've been schoolt not to devote much energy in that direction in any project.

That said, we do have generalized ideas about voices though.

Truro describes Pioneer as having a "radio announcers voice", which is a very short way to tell you a lot about how he sounds. Authoritative yet approachable with an air of trustworthiness. And distinctly non-regional.

Pilot and Mate would have had urbanized (read: diluted) Texan accents during their work lives, but Pilot's has been dulled further by his retirement in Illinois. In the scenario in which Mate is rebuilt, his accent remains (Ray also likes the idea of Mate having a particularly deep voice for such a small build.)

999 is a New Yorker and so has an appropriate accent. While I wouldn't call this a voice claim, I did have Jill Zarin from Real Housewives of New York in mind when writing her haranguing U-505. 999 is not quite as nasal as that though.

2903 has a more southwestern accent but it's also diluted by urbanization and the need to be understood everywhere from Los Angeles to Chicago.

Basically, most of these are dictated by where they lived out their service lives. Although Frisco 1630, the Russian Decapod, pretends to have a Russian accent when she meets new engines.

Also important to note that, aside from Pioneer and Pilot, engines do not send each other letters.

The only reason Pioneer and Pilot do is because Pioneer's docents thought it was a cute idea. The guys at the IRM would not be so whimsical, but once you have a letter from the Pioneer Zephyr, who are you not to deliver it, read it aloud, and help write back?

(tfissab) how much do the MSI engines know of the outside world? is 999 aware of 2933 or 3001?

Museum exhibits and engines in general are kept pretty sheltered about things which do not concern them - politics namely, but also current events and other things they might find distressing. For the most part, they don't ask about these things either, because they know it doesn't involve them. If they do need the information, for whatever reason, the people around them would explain it the way you might to a child; as vaguely as possible and in a manner that leaves very little room for discussion so as to minimize the anxiety it might cause. It wouldn't do to have your engines becoming cunt dorks about human matters, things which they have no hope of being able to change.

Matters of scrapping and preservation are harder, because those things *do* concern them (sometimes very directly, in Pilot's case). Engines are liable to be more interested in that information, or they might be told freely depending on what it is and if the humans in charge of them think it would be beneficial for them to know. Hell, the only reason Pioneer knew about Pilot in the first place is because his docents heard about the IRM's acquisition and asked if Pioneer might like to write a letter to the Zephyr engine saved from scrap. They suggested the letter because the IRM is so close by and Pioneer loves the romance of the post. It's also a good mental exercise for an engine who sometimes has trouble socializing in his own yard.

999 might know about the Mohawks in the same fashion with her docents informing her about it once they find out, though her interest would only extend so far as to say, "Well, I'm glad some of them made it." 999 and 2933/3001 don't share as many similarities as Pioneer and Pilot do and she's also not nostalgic for her railroad the same way Pilot and Pioneer are so she's not interested in reminiscing with other engines from the NYC. She might send them a Christmas card once a year if her docents suggested it. She gets all her socialization she could want in her current yard! In the same manner, 2903 probably knows about his brothers and sisters of the 2900 class who were preserved, but has no interest or inclination to contact them. For him, just knowing how many of them made it is closure enough.

Pioneer and Pilot - knowing about each other and a few of the other shovelnoses in preservation - will occasionally ask about the dispositions of the Mark Twain Zephyr and Flying Yankee. Though they're also aware that they aren't owed the information and sometimes the people they're asking don't know, so it's not something they're overly concerned about. However, if any of their engines express a healthy interest in a topic they'd like to know more about, they're usually more than happy to provide. After all, museums are places of learning.

Trick: Which of your OCs is most likely to pull a prank (and what kind, and on whom)?

Treat: What is your OCs' comfort food(s)?

ANON, ty ty ty for sending in! Halloween is like...days ago, but it's never too late for oc talk! 🥹✨ I shall answer both either way hehe!

Trick: OC that most likely to pull a prank?

Answer: well, the band of misfits in my head consists of Zephyr, Irene, Sage and Sorrel. I think the most likely to pull a prank so effortlessly would definitely be Zeph. He would pull the most harmless pranks, just for the sake of funsies especially to his buds and he'll have a good laugh. His friends honestly saw it coming, and he knows cute baby pranks for his fav nephew. But, Zeph is the king of pranks!

Treat: what is your OC's comfort food?

I'll list some of the ones I'm having brainrot hehe!

Maia: chocolate chip cookies (always)

Raylene: any pasta. Pasta during a rainy day, with a good movie. Perfecto!

Elliot: anything his grandma made. It's THE definition of comfort food for him. <3

Naya: red wine 🥹 (which is not comfort food at all, but she loves it TREMENDOUSLY) BUT, if I really think about it, chocolate covered strawberries!

Tamara: a good pastry, croissant especially. Or maybe macaroons. Sweet tooth at its finest.

How did Pioneer and U-505 start talking? What made U-505 allow himself that friendship?

It's important to understand that U-505's not denying himself friendship in being stand-offish. And this is also not related to the rules he has to observe as a war machine because Pioneer is a civilian engine.

U-505 allowed Pioneer to start teaching him English within a month or two of his arrival in May in 1960. Up until then, U-505 had gleaned a few words on his own, but he'd been set up outside by himself since 1954 and the museum would have someone who could speak German talk to him if needed. He didn't need to speak to the visitors really so it just wasn't something he'd ever sought to learn.

But having Pioneer installed next to him... trains are social machines. They work closely with one another and they talk. And Pioneer was built to be especially talkative as Burlington's flagship engine.

But moreover, the reason U-505 made the effort is because he admired the way Pioneer took to preservation.

It was obviously a much different scenario for U-505, since his preservation is not one celebrating his existence and it also involved the loss of his sea-worthiness. In that regard, Pioneer was in a much better position. Still, he struggled, as most engines do, with the change in duties. It's why early on in his letters to Pilot, before he realizes he's been rescued from scrap and is grateful to be at the IRM, that Pioneer says that preservation can feel like a demotion. It's hard for an engine to have to come to terms with the end of his service life.

The way Pioneer responded to this, though, was to set those feelings aside and put his best effort into being a good and engaging exhibit. As we've said, he's already got a lot of transferable skills to do this, but U-505 had never seen a machine like this. He didn't know much English, but he could still tell that Pioneer was trying very hard to adapt and not to complain or be ungrateful.

Pioneer would sometimes talk at U-505 just to entertain himself or to make a gesture at including him in conversation with his cars, but U-505 made the first actual attempt at talking. He asked Pioneer, in very broken English, how fast he went. And Pioneer told him; 112 miles per hour. Then Pioneer asked U-505 how fast he went. Which U-505 could not tell him because his speed is measured in knots. They got their guides to help the next day.

Things would have been quite friendly in the yard by now if it weren't for 2903.

See, the problem is, 2903 is wartime build. Because light metals were needed to build airplanes, all that railroad works could get was heavy metal. Too heavy for diesel motors to carry. So they made the 2900 class fuck-off big steam engines instead. Unfortunately, because steam is very costly to run and maintain, this meant that 2903's service life was incredibly short compared to most engines, only 11 years. He is resentful of the effect the war had on his service life and U-505 is a very broad target for those feelings.

He also did not take to preservation as well as Pioneer did, being that he is literally Just Some Guy and had no expectation of ever being put in this position. Having watched Pioneer's transition to preservation work comparatively, 2903's refusal or inability to meet the job left U-505 with a poor impression of him. What little English U-505 had at his disposal could be used to toss a glib barb or two 2903's way.

2903 (and 999 when she joins the yard the next year) hassled Pioneer a lot for fraternizing with an enemy unit. It doesn't bother Pioneer because it's not that serious in the grand scheme of things. U-505 does not like being a source of trouble for him though and regrets that Pioneer got put in the yard with him first.

This is the reason why he's reluctant to entertain 727. It's not that he doesn't like her or isn't flattered (if bewildered) by her attentions. It's that he thinks she's better off not getting herself involved with him. It hasn't done Pioneer any favors.

But by the time 727 arrives at the museum, 2903 has been moved to the IRM, 999 has been away for a couple years for refurbishment, and the social dynamic in the museum has changed for it.

It's actually 999 that convinces him to give in. Asks if there isn't something in his prize rules about having to accept when an American wants a smelly old boat for reasons she couldn't possibly fathom. There's not - 727 isn't a war machine - but it says something that 999 is trying to find a justification for the idea.

so is 999 the only one at the museum that doesn't have a crush on Pioneer lol

I think we've talked about this before, that Pioneer has his admirers certainly but that he's not universally adored in the museum. 2903, for instance, is somewhat dubious of Burlington charm. Stuka also just doesn't gel well with Pioneer (but that has more to do with his being male and American than anything else). There's also plenty of engines in the museum for whom their admiration for him is entirely professional.

As for 999... she thinks he's handsome, distinguished, and well-behaved, which makes him an ideal date for the Speed Record Party but not much else.

To be sure, she likes Pioneer and game recognizes game so unlike 2903, she can tell that his Burlington Bullshit isn't, that he's completely earnest and genuinely means every word he says. They've shared a unique job description over their careers that gives them an innate understanding of their current work that neither of their yardmates can come close to matching. And he looks nice next to her! They're more evenly proportioned to each other so they look nice in photos together. Very important.

But Pioneer is a little boring for 999. He maintains his sense of decorum at all times and he always considers how his behavior will reflect on his railway or museum. He's also very risk-averse which 999 finds a little frustrating from a fellow speed record breaker. (This comes from his being much more delicate than she is. We don't know if 999 ever crashed into anything over her career, but a steam engine tends to crush whatever it hits, while the absolute reverse is true for shovelnoses. He's always had to be more careful, both for his own sake and for his passengers.)

All these things contribute to why 999 ultimately chose 2903 over him. There's also that 2903 is a mixed traffic steam engine, meaning his work history is more similar to hers overall, despite her standing as a famous engine. It would more annoying to her for Pioneer (who is strictly a passenger engine, both in ability and build) to be ignorant of grunt work than it is for 2903 not to understand fairs and pageants.

All that said, 999 wouldn't say no to a consist that included Pioneer.
