OCBC Corporate Speedway 2024

The OCBC team came into speedway with some corporate pressure on our shoulders. After winning last year,there’s expectation internally that we’ll do it again. Structurally the team has had a few changes - including the addition of ex-National rider Joel Foo - so we’re hopeful of a good result.

The race itself has shrunk with only 6 teams signing up this year. Old adversaries SCDF are here but joined by powerful teams from AWS and Eastern Pacific. Due to the limited teams, the format has changed and we’re riding with 6 teams on the track with 1 team removed in the first 2 rounds. This turns out to be a bonus for us and actually made it easier than previous years. The new goal being to ensure that at least 1 rider gets dropped from the group so we can all progress.

The qualifier was busy with 6 teams on the track. The first pair of riders immediately saw one of the teams get distanced. So there was minimal pressure on Joel and I to do anything. We agreed with AWS to keep the speed high so the dropped team couldn’t get back on. Tribal crashed out on the uturn and it made it even easier!

Semis was similar. EPS were distanced in the first pair and we only had to maintain the gap to go through. We did this easily & could see that AWS were the real competition as the other teams seemed on the limit.

For the finals, we were ready for some proper racing and we knew some attacking would be required. However luck was on our side. In lap 3 of the first pair, there was a touch of wheels and all the riders bar 3 went down. Fortunately Wai Mun & Jason avoided the carnage and were clear. The rest of the teams were in a mess and 1 AWS had to literally walk his broken bike all the back to the start. Joel and myself decided to hammer our ride anyway and ended up actually lapping the 2nd place team. We sat up at the end for a money shot celebration for the staff magazine. A bad way to win the race but a win is a win!

In the Club Speedway, Quantum Racing smashed it and we got both our teams through to the final. The boys dominated the race and had a 10s gap with 4 laps to go. Amazingly Matt Brittany closed the gap alone but we still had enough to win the sprint and make it three-in -a-row!

SCF Challenge - Team Pursuit

Following the rapid decline of the URA city centre criteriums, the SCF Challenge series is meant to be a new set of events to help fill the void. All being well, events should be every 2 months with different formats being tried.

The inaugural event was a Team Pursuit format. 2 teams racing on the hotdog circuit at the national stadium - on either side of the course. 4 laps at full gas for 7 minutes.

When it was initially announced, it said there was room for 8 teams only so I immediately went online to register and chope a place for the team. With the corners, I knew that I was a liability on the circuit and that the place could then be passed to a better bike handler. Sadly,due to the logistics of a Long day, no one stepped up and I ended up having to be the 4th man on the team. The final line up consisted of Hish, Keiichi, new boy Gernot and myself.

We were the first to race at 6:50 against Thirty Forty. Our tactics were a mess and we blew apart on every corner with me being dropped on lap 2. Still our time was ok and we won comfortably. Most importantly our time was in the TOP 4 of the 12 teams which meant we were straight into the Quarter Finals and could go for coffee.

In the Quarters, we changed the tactics. As I couldn’t stay on during the corners, we agreed that I would do the first lap for the team. My role was to take it up and drill the first lap before dropping out. This worked much better and we beat SCF Development Squad easily.

In the semis, we were drawn against the Matadors. They’d fielded a strong team, all on aero bars and had the best times of the day. We did some good times 7:10 but they still put 5 seconds into us. Anza ended up facing them in the final - but with slower qualification times than us.

We had to do a final round against Integrated Riding to select the final podium slot. Our timing was good and we improved down to 7:08 to take 3rd. Matadors won the day with 6:55 with Anza getting 7:13 in the final.

It was a good fun day. A lot of sitting around but worth it overall. Next time, I’ll make sure not to put my hand up for the racing part.

OCBC Cycle 2019

By my reckoning, this is my 9th outing at OC Cycle. I’ve done all since the 2009 inception - except 2 where it overlapped with Tour Of Friendship.

Saturday was the Corporate Speedway where a miserly 6 teams competed for the Speedway crown. The 4 man OCBC team faced Singapore Airlines & the reigning chaps Singapore Civil Defence in round 1. The 3 teams came into the midway changeover together but we were able to force a GAP at this point. After that SCDF and OCBC worked together to extend it and then we comfortably cruised into the next round.

The semis was rammed with 5 teams - now including local legend Thom Thrall, Strooper and Oldish Mav. This round was much harder.

Again the 5 teams came in totally together at changeover & I again did well to be first back out on the road after the handover. However it was all back together by the uturn. Strooper then kept up a high pace and so there was little attacking opportunity. I briefly went on lap 3 but no one came with me and it went nowhere fast. By lap 5, I was maxed out and moving up wasn’t possible. We got a small GAP on the GSK rider but Thom Thralls sprint made up for it and we went out on time difference.

Sunday, I joined the main Sportive race as I heard that I was in the Corporate Chase and therefore shouldn’t join The Champions Wave. I was concerned about the massive volume of starters so came down extra early - following an obscene 3:15am alarm.

The corporate challenge wave and Sportive A started together and I rapidly made it to the front. Wilfred Mav was doing most of the pulling and there was some Corporate challenge action between StanChart, AMD and Deutsche Bank. I sat in the TOP 5 wheels out to West Coast Highway and was feeling good. Coming back along WCH, I hit a big bump in the road and got a pinch flat. Day over!

Due to tiny pockets on the CFS jersey, I couldn’t fit my puncture kit so I’d just brought a tin of the foam puncture repair. As always, it completely failed to do shit and I ended up walking 3km along the hard shoulder to get off the viaduct to safety of a taxi. I heard there was a massive crash in my group 5 mins later so might not have been a bad thing!
