Oc Storage Sites
I mostly use toyhou.se, but i'm aware there are a few others out there and was curious to compare and contrast! Obviously these are just my opinions, but i tried to include some objective base info to help if you were curious about the pros and cons of any particular site!
Tumblr media
A bit of a tldr image if you aren't interested in more in depth discussion of each site! I'll go into detail below for all the options
UNVALE
I don't have strong feelings one way or another! A solid site, good character creation, but a bit strict about NSFW which is a downside for me personally
I enjoy the character creation! Contains a basic info card, tabs for more in depth information, and then a gallery, a solid choice if you don't want to get crazy with customization but still want some options for the info you can include!
Option to create worlds, which i enjoy! These can host a description for the world, as well as characters, art, and writing! A comment section is also available
Option to host writing which is always nice!
Minor gripe but the rules are listed under the help center instead of having a designated link
Lots of little in depth posts explaining the answers to various questions! I enjoy this a lot, and while you might have to do a tiny bit of hunting to find out what post you need its overall very straightforward
Anti AI
TOYHOUSE
This is what I use! I enjoy the site, though i have my qualms i will not lie
Character creation can range from a simple text list of details to in depth html code! Many provide bases to work off of for html, but if you're unfamiliar with coding then having a bit of a 'fancier' character or user profile has a learning curve
Allows all forms of nsfw as long as appropriately listed and warned for.
• Non graphic, story based mentions of underage characters in sexual situations is allowed.
In depth forum with a decent amount of subcategories, including designated roleplay areas!
marketplace available both on the searchpage and also in the forums
World creation option! These can host their own forums and get pretty in depth if desired
A pro for some, a con for others, can feel a bit like a social media at times as opposed to a character storage site. I dislike the amount of drama, and hate that the review forum is almost exclusively people posting callout posts
No official rule or statement, but appears Anti AI as profiles containing it are taken down
REFSHEET.NET
Simple, but i like it! I'd go with this if you don't need or want a very complicated character layout, creation UI is simple and straightforward
Seems to allow basically any type of character, very low filter for whats allowed which i personally enjoy in a site.
NSFW markers available for 18+ content
Specifies in site guidelines that you cannot use the site as a fallback if you're banned from other, similar sites. Not very relevant to me, but may be worth noting for some folks.
Unable to access forums at the time of writing this, so i cannot speak on the quality of the content there!
Does not host written works, but allows for a lengthy description
Unable to find stance on AI
OCBIN
This is one I have the least information on! It uses an invite system like Toyhouse and I wasn't inclined to hunt down a code to create an account. Anyone who uses this site is free to chime in to clarify missing info
My biggest issue here is the lack of easily Accessible rules or community guidelines. These MAY be on the discord, but i'd rather not have to join a discord server to be able to find the rules.
Other than that the site seems decent! I cannot speak from the perspective of having an account, but outwardly the character pages look nice and seem to have variety! Seems to have a few templates to choose from for character profiles, so customization seems fairly varied!
Contains all the basics you'll need if nothing else. Gallery, description, trait options, etc
Can host written works as well
Unable to find stance on AI
CHARACTERHUB
Personally i'm not a fan of this one. Some might love it, and that's fine! It just isn't my cup of tea. Seems a bit like its aimed at a younger audience, based on the rules
Minor pet peeve but the rules are hosted off a google doc as opposed to on the site itself. Unsure as to why this is?
I enjoy the character profile creator! It seems to have a lot of options like adding a spotify playlist and several mini windows for various details. Some tab options are hidden behind a paywall, though frankly you could just add these in a normal description tab
Not a super big fan of how they're presenting themselves? I can't explain it but i feel like they're trying to sell me a product more than anything. Its just a personal preference really, i don't tend to enjoy sort of quirky cutesy marketing vibes?
Only nongraphic violence / injuries are allowed, heavy injuries or sexual nsfw aren't!
Designated area for roleplay, and while there aren't forums there are community chat areas!
Also has an option for worlds with a pretty large amount of options to customize the info in them
Has a reward system? They seem to be going for a variety of things on Characterhub, including sort of being a game based on interacting with the community? I'm not super sure, but im not a big fan of having a currency shop where you can spend irl money to get more of the currency so im not a big fan
Unable to find stance on AI
Overall i wouldn't say any particular site is AWFUL, your mileage will vary depending on what you're looking for. While CharacterHub is personally my least favorite some people might really enjoy a quirky, community based sort of game-y approach!
If you're looking for simplicity and a more 'anything goes' approach then Refsheet.net is what i'd recommend, while if you'd like simplicity with a bit more moderation i'd suggest Unvale! If you want a bit more customization i'd suggest Toyhouse or OCbin, though i won't FULLY endorse OCbin as i wasn't personally able to gather much info on it, so take that with a grain of salt!
CharacterHub and Toyhouse are the most community based if you're interested in the social aspect just as much as the oc aspect, while Unvale, OCbin, and Refsheet lean more into that 'OC storage' vibe even if they retain at least a bit of a community aspect
I really cannot be bothered to look into any drama or controversies Abt each site so if there are statements against anything listed here I haven't looked for em, I'd highly encourage doing your own research!
If i were to use something other than toyhouse, i'd likely go with Refsheet.net or look further into OCbin, but as things stand i'm more or less content enough with Toyhouse as it is

MY OPINION ON CHARACTER STORAGE APPS/WEBSITES
I am looking for an good app to keep my OCs,so I'll be giving you all my opinions on the ones i test.
The order is the order of Wich I tested first.
1- Toyhouse
If you like making very personalized profiles, prefer to focus on drawings, toyhouse is a good option for you,if you known how to code.
The fact that you need a code to enter may be a bum to a lot of people, but finding a code nowadays doesn't seem so hard,so that's not the big problem,if you don't know how to code,or you will have to break your head to learn,or you will have to content yourself with a simple, minimalist,Google doc like profile.
2- Character hub
Easy to use, pretty interface, during the character profile creation they give you options of tabs/questions to make the process easier.
Focus on images/drawings.
Easy to organize.
If you like simple/minimalist aesthetic changes, that's a good option.
Not a lot of options for personalization(basic only color of buttons and the page)
Can be very laggy for mobile.
3-Ocbin
Needs an invitation code, and I didn't liked the interface enough to bother looking for one.
I think the interface is kind of old style,is not ugly, but it isn't my thing.
4- Ref sheet.net
Easy to make an account, doesn't need an invitation code.
Interface is not interesting, not my thing.
Not a lot of options for personalization.
I can't delete the account I made,if anyone knows how please tell me
5-Worldanvil
It's cool so far,the interface is nice and it's easy to use,the only bad thing is that apparently you have to upgrade to be able to make your project private.
A bit annoying to use on mobile.
But the focus is more Worldbuilding than character creation.
6-campfire
It's okay, interface is pretty, easy to use.
Laggy on mobile.
7-Unvale
The interface is pretty, easy to use,the only option of personalization is the color of the character profile.
Kind of a character hub without the lagging.
Will test:
Obsidian
Feel free to suggest apps/websites for me to try.

Note
Seeing as we're talking about Toyhouse alternatives, this is a list of all the ones I know of: UnVale Characterhub Refsheet.net ocbin (though it requires an invite) Notebook.ai (has some p2u features) Obsidian (local backups)
In case anyone is wanting to jump ship: don't forget the Toyhouse downloader. I personally like Characterhub the most, but I have accounts on all of them so that my information is stored in several places, including local backups on Obsidian.
Nice

Old ref sheet that I forgot I had. Its name is just Lion iirc cause a little psychic toddler pointed at it and was like Lion. And it was like well yes. Ok. Sure. Anyway it's like a stuffed animal lion that got magicked in a similar way as the dragger did. But obviously it's not NEARLY as malicious as the dragger, it's literally just a lion stuffed animal

Who amongst you wants to read a ridiculous amount of words about my guys? Bc I have stuff here. For you. And for me
Name choice reasons first, and if anyone that is not me ends up reading this, you may notice that even Inoue's NAME is kind of centered around Mahamat if you really think about it. That is 100% intentional. Also bear with me with the translations, I do not speak arabic or japanese in the SLIGHTEST so hopefully the internet hasn't lied to me Badly
All of this would make a lot more sense if you read their original lore post, but who cares
Ok so starting with the psychic. I decided that her name was gonna be Azumi Inoue after a VERY long debate on whether I wanted to make it feel straightforward/just according to her character, or add symbolism to it. I chose symbolism. First name Azumi, and I've been kind of hung up on the spelling of it just because I think both meanings I'm leaning towards fit the story. It's either Azumi: bright, light - as in to make something clear, to have it illuminated - or Azumi: Peaceful. Last name Inoue, and I had a SIGNIFICANTLY less difficult time choosing this because it was so conveniently lucky that I stumbled across this name. Inoue: above the well. Together that would either be like clarity above the well or peace above the well.
I think I'm SOOOO goddamn clever with this btw. My absolute FAVORITE name that I've ever chosen, because not only did I give her like a shit ton of INSANE well symbolism that I can't even get into rn before I even found it, and I ALSO decided that her family was going to have a thing about wells too that I'll mention later. It was crazy. Anyways so both peace above the well and clarity above the well both have to do with her misunderstanding with the other girl, i.e you can't see the truth through tunnel vision, she can't really see that mahamat actually has no fucking idea that inoue did what she did and has been covering for her the whole time. Inoue thinks that mahamat is using her and knows exactly what she's doing and that her powers are actually inoue's. Inoue has built up this idea in her head around mahamat that's, for the most part, completely untrue, and if she could get out of that well (throwback to crazy symbolism stuff I won't explain (right this second)), if she could get across that gap and actually just TALK to her, clear up the MOUNTAIN of miscommunications and onesided resentment (will not happen btw. Not before Shit Goes Down), everything would be cleared up. She'd have clarity, she'd have be able to have peace of mind
I have had the MOST trouble with the non psychic's name, Inoue's was pretty much an instant decision other than the meaning. I also had to decide whether or not to go for symbolism or character here, and I did a little mix of both, but I leaned a little more into character because she is a more straightforward person than Inoue I think. So the non psychic's first name would either be Mitsuko or Mitsumi, and either would be ok because both the meanings would fit, but I'm leaning more towards Mitsuko just bc Mitsumi is a little more symbolic-y (AS MUCH AS I LOVE IT FOR HER. EVEN MORE THAN MITSUKO TECHNICALLY). Mitsuko like "light/shining child" and Mitsumi as something along the lines of "fascinating secret" OR "seen secret," which I'm taking to be as like knowing about or being aware of a secret. Looking right at it. I Will explain this later, ik it's kind of cryptic rn if you haven't seen the og lore post. Her last name is Mahamat, (and ik ik, double M, just bear with me), which is supposed to be like "highly praised," OR Ahmat, which is like pretty similar as something along the lines of "the most praised." And ik that the obvious choice is Ahmat, but I've gotten really attached to Mahamat as her last name, so. It's still being decided.
So Mitsuko, Mahamat, and Ahmat all have to do with Inoue's perception of her, but also just how she is. She's a very talented person, she's very popular, she does really receive a lot of praise and validation for the things she accomplishes, and even more so with 'her' psychic powers. Once Inoue starts covering for her, she's complimented and praised left right and center, and she's absolutely ADORED by everyone. She shows off with the powers a LOT. She is the light, and she's a very (literally and personality wise) bright person, she's the center of attention. With Inoue, this starts as sincere, because she genuinely does love Mahamat, but it gets more sarcastic and ironic towards the end of the storyline. Speaking of ironic, her ENTIRE NAME is ironic, ESPECIALLY with the end of the story. At the end, the secret gets out because of Inoue, and suddenly Mahamat isn't great anymore. She's not popular, she's not cool, she's a fraud. Everyone believes that she knows exactly what she was doing and believes Inoue wholeheartedly. She is no longer the most praised, she is no longer the brightest kid in the room, everyone thinks she Knows The Secret (circling back to Mitsumi as an option). Inoue thought she knew, everyone else did too, but she didn't. She had no idea. It's the most ironic name of all of them, it's HER name, and she's the one out of the two that Doesn't Know What's Happening, even though everyone thinks she does.
Anyways she has a dual name. You may or may not notice, but both last name options are Arabic last names. Specifically they're Chadian. They're two of the most common Chadian last names, which is very important. They're common. She's common. She's no different from everyone else, and there's nothing special about her. It's supposed to be foreshadowing even though the readers and me the creator already know that she doesn't actually have powers. It's foreshadowing for her I guess, she's common. Like every single other person
Also she's Chadian and Japanese, her father and grandmother were both born in Chad. Her father moved to Morocco for a job and her grandmother came with him, and then the two of them moved to Japan for a Different, better paying job at a company that I have not decided on yet, where her father met her mother and she was born like ten years after her father and grandmother moved to Japan. She's pretty fluent in both Japanese and Chadian Arabic because her father was insistent that he teach it to his daughter, but by the nature of language and how you learn it, she's ever so slightly more proficient in Japanese, but only because she speaks it more often and with more people. She is DEFINITELY not bad at speaking Chadian Arabic don't get me wrong here
For the uhhhh for the story that inoue's name is insanely unintentionally related to. (Meant to mirror Inoue and Mahamat (but also intentionally not exactly) in that Mahamat is meant to reflect the woman and Inoue is the husband)
Ok so wayyyy back in the family line she has this girl and her husband. At some point the woman gets sick, and so every day that she's sick, the husband goes and gets her water from the well by their house (this is way back when and they're in a place that doesn't really have running water just yet). Eventually the wife gets better, but the husband still continues to get water for her well after the fact. He's devoted, he loves his wife, but eventually he starts getting tired of it. He gets frustrated. He continues to do it out of obligation and he assumes that his wife knows that he's sick of it, but she doesn't tell him to stop, and so he doesn't. One day at the well he makes a mistake. Maybe he leans a little too far, maybe the grass that morning has more dew than usual and he slips, however it happens, he falls in. He's trapped. He PANICS. He starts yelling for his wife, but stops after about a minute, assuming that she'd heard him. She hasn't. She has no idea that he's in there, and furthermore she has no idea that he'd been tired of getting the water for her. He, however, doesn't know any of this. He assumes that she knows and that she's left him in there and that she'd known the whole time that he had started to resent doing it, but he's never said anything. He'd been giving subtle hints and he yelled for her (from where she couldn't hear), but she'd never picked up on it. At some point his wife comes outside to grab something; a basket, some laundry, it doesn't matter. If her husband had kept shouting for her, she would have heard him and he could understand that she had not done this to him on purpose. If he'd made it more clear, he wouldn't have been in that situation in the first place. There are plenty of ways for him to get out of the well, from getting the woman to getting out on his own, but in his rage and misery at apparently being left there, he pursues none of them. He doesn't realize that he has a way out, has Several ways out. He dies in that well, and his spirit (and, logically, his decomposing body) poisons the well so that no one can use it for decades. He never gets out, he never sees the truth, nothing is ever resolved. The woman eventually finds out where he's gone and she is beyond distraught. She's alienated and ostracized by the people around her until her passing because they had all formed the same opinion and come to the same conclusion as her husband had. They're meant to be like a cautionary tale for Ahmat and Inoue, but obviously they don't know about them, so it's more like a "whatever, go my symbolism/parallel/reflection" moment. Hilariously enough, Ahmat's family has a similar story about wells, except it's the positive version of this story
"How would they know this story from his perspective if he never got out of the well," I hear you say. I'm debating on this, because the truth of the matter could be that he DID get out but never ends up talking to his wife and learning and developing his perspective. He's angry and hurt and he would lie about this story to the people he's telling it to in some way to frame her as the absolute bad guy in this who did everything 100% intentionally. She heard him. She knew. She didn't do anything. I do like this and I think it would still reflect on Inoue and Ahmat pretty well, but I think it would change the well symbolism ever so slightly from being that getting out of it will bring them clarity, to getting out of it means they still have to work and fight for that clarity and they still have to reach out. It still works, but a little differently that I originally intended. I'd end up reworking that ending a little
But also, I COULD have him actually die, they may just not know this story from his point of view, I could have it just like. Be a little fact mentioned somehow and have the Inoues be very traditional ppl who focus a lot on family and the past and the way the story is told is very negative towards the wife. This way Inoue will like grow up thinking of how the wife was in the wrong bc nobody is very kind to historical people in her position, and it'll still reflect on her relationship with Ahmat and be kind of reflective in a different way where she finally has to consider the wife's perspective through Ahmat. I think this one works better with the well symbolism I already have and I'm Kind Of leaning towards this ending. Idk. I have it playing out a lot more concisely than I'm making it sound rn and I could see it going either way
Yayyy if I have more (and I probably do) I'll make another post later

Guess we doin phones now
Tumblr media
More of the actual story + lore stuff under this thing
His full name is Callie Halden. For now
He mentioned in an offhand comment to his aunt at 16 that he wanted a job, so she decided to have him start running errands for her. Eventually said aunt told some friends who had their own stores about him, so he started running errands for them as well. Word spreads and now at 22 he does this for half the people in town. Unofficial postal service, glorified errand boy
Fucking HATES it, but it's good cardio and a lot of the people in town rely on him to deliver stuff. He originally tried to keep it pretty cheap because it was just a summer job, but he stayed and it stuck and now he's paid a miserable $3.50 for every package/thing delivered
He's ended up becoming a pretty good long distance sprinter so he can earn as much as possible
Bc he needs to be as fast as possible for his job, he's become pretty impatient. DESPITE the need to make things fast, he goes out of his way to take routes that he knows will have the most cats on them, even if they take longer
Likes collecting phone charms to add to his head. He switches them out like every other day, and he likes it the most when they jingle as obnoxiously as possible (he doesn't register that it's obnoxious, he thinks that it sounds nice. Everyone else HATES it)
Relations: I think he would be friends with Oliver but like. Who wouldn't? Anyways. He feels a kind of kinship with Randy (crappy jobs, being underpaid and overworked, just general suckyness), (OBVIOUSLY Randy has it so much worse, but yk), but he also kind of can't stand him. Callie constantly tries to convince him that it's all in his head and he needs to be more positive, but he's a dick about it. Like he's trying to be nice but it comes off as forceful and nasty
He's related to Little Billy. (2nd cousins, he has to see him at family events and around town. He pretends not to know him bc Billy is actually the worst) He would bond with Phonegingi over Little Billy hatred and find that he actually likes him if he could get past the whole nipple thing ("Eugh, who the FUCK has that many nipples?")
If he were actually in the game, you'd just see him running around in the background every once in a while
He would main dualies in splatoon btw
If he had a leitmotif, it would sound kind of like (...) Mr. Boy Is On the Roof Again but not exactly
He's actually a MEOWTEROLA and not a MOTOROLA. He got that changed
