Favor - 3zun + NHS Hunger Games AU! Like the one time I'll believe in this kind of self-presentation from JGY explicitly because of the setting change. FANTASTICALLY plotted. The author EXPERTLY does surgery on the plot beats and setting of MDZS to fit them to the arc of the AU to the point that I almost consider it another adaptation. Endlessly clever. It's so fucking good. Obsessed with it. Some of the most lines ever. Beautiful reveal work

Mutual Friends - Xuexiao, mid domesticity arc, have the misfortune to run into Xiyao, and it would be terribly impolite not to catch up. Absolutely impeccably tense and hilarious conversation sparring. Hidden role game of a dinner conversation.

Principles of Your Past - LAN XICHEN CHARACTER STUDY OF ALL TIMEEEE. I keep thinking about this forever. My favorite version of Xiyao first kiss during Sunshot I think

The Golden Fox - Meng Yao, who is half fox spirit and really wants to be a cultivator, is constantly getting in some fucking situation in pursuit of the latter, which is aggravated even more by the fact that he is the former much more than he would like to be. Lan Xichen shouldn't worry about it, but also Lan Xichen shouldn't be showing interest in him either, so we're really at an impasse here.

Something to Believe - 3zun fixit casefic that makes and defends the claim "we just need to hold Lan Xichen at gunpoint until Nieyao fix their shit" with brutal, impeccable efficiency. WORK TOGETHER OR DIE!

Still Waters Run Deep - By the same author as above, HEARTRENDING LXC study, many such cases

Red String Wrapped Around Your Throat - Speaking of same author, this is by the same guy as Safety Concern, e.g. the only guy on Archive of Our Own dot gov that doesn't log on exclusively to tell lies about Nie Mingjue. Nieyao timeloop fixit. The desperation is palpable. They are both insane. Do you remember how we used to kill ourselves. WORK TOGETHER OR DIE!

Last of Our Kind - Postcanon Xiyao amnesia in Dongying. I don't believe in this Xiyao sex but I do believe in this neuroticism. I read the whole thing while nervous about my imminent choir concert in December and commented as I went, got interrupted, promised in the last comment I left that I'd comment on the end, and never got around to it. Author of that fic if you're reading this sorry I thought the ending was sweet but how much I can write comments depends on planetary alignment on any given day. The Wangxian B-plot in this one is beautiful also I adore how WWX is written

My Erstwhile Dear - ABSOLUTELY FUCKING IMPECCABLE epistolary postcanon Xiyao. I fucking love it when they yell at each other. They are both SO ANNOYING. It's PERFECT. I CRIED!

You Cut Through All The Noise - Xiyao slop. It's sweet enough to be a reprieve after some of these but it's also deeply repressed as is appropriate. Very very good.

I have not, but I would love to! And thank you, I'm happy to hear that. :) For the record, I'm always accepting fandom asks! (At least, for fandoms I'm in currently, haha. But right now I'm very deep in Pokémon and Pokémon Horizons specifically, so it's always a safe bet!)

What I like about them

There's honestly just so much to like about Friede. Setting aside that I seem to have a bias toward Charizard trainers (I've noticed recently that I seem to gravitate toward Charizard trainers: Alan, Leon, and now Friede), Friede is just such a fun, engaging character.

He's incredibly intelligent and a strong battler, but he's not cocky about it. Instead, he has a natural confidence where he knows what he's capable of and owns his accomplishments, but he doesn't make those around him feel bad for not being on the level he is if they aren't. (And actually, he tends to celebrate others' accomplishments, and encourages the kids to keep growing and become the best versions of themselves.) He's got a good sense of humor, he can acknowledge when he's messed up (mostly in the "did I forget to mention . . . ?" territory lol), and he's a warm, supportive person to be around. I think that he makes a lot of people feel safe, both in-universe and outside of it, and that's part of why there's a lot of self-shipping with him in the fandom. (Which mind you, I am NOT criticizing at all. I totally get it. He has a lot of qualities that would make him a pretty good partner, so it's easy to see why so many gravitate to him.)

What I dislike about them

Well, currently that he's fucking dead, lmao. (I mean, he probably isn't actually, but right now it sure feels like he is.) Apart from that though, I wish that he a.) had given Cap a better moveset, because his current one sucks ass, and b.) actually spent more time with Char. I mean, I guess he and Char are getting a lot of bonding time now that they're in eeby deeby, but it would have been nice to see them bond before that.

Favourite moment

I think the flashbacks in episode 18 are just stunning, and I love that we got to see exactly what type of professor / scientist Friede is with how he studied Cap. Not only does he prefer to do fieldwork rather than lab work (and seems to need to be in nature), but the way he does his field work from a distance, without interfering with the pokémon that he's studying, is really great. I mean, yeah, he gave Cap food and tried to talk to him, but for the most part he did his research from a distance so that Cap would be disturbed as little as possible, and it truly shows how considerate he is of wild pokémon and nature itself.

I also love any times we got to see him reading or studying, as well as when he did his own investigation at Exceed. I both love getting to see his professor side, as well as love seeing him get himself in danger. Oh, and the dark room battle against Spinel was also great!

Least favourite moment

When he got yeeted off the airship at 30,000 feet and fucking died (more or less).

A situation with this character that I want to see explored more

I said this in the Spinel ask, but I'll say it here as well: since he's been gone all this time, and neither he nor Spinel are getting screen time, then I want it to be because he's getting tortured and brainwashed so that the reveal that he's still alive is as dramatic and painful as it possibly can be. Especially since they're refusing to mention him even when biker gangs have his Charizard patch on their fucking capes, if they're going to go this long without saying word one, then I need high octane drama. It's what we deserve.

An interesting AU for this character

I mean, I think my Grounding Techniques AU is interesting! It's extremely self-indulgent though, with the way it features some of my favorite tropes, so I guess it's natural I'd feel that way, haha.

A crossover

Not strictly a crossover, but I would be lying if I said that I hadn't thought of what it'd be like if he and Alan met.

OTP (or OT3+ etc…. just… favourite ship)

So I talked in the Spinel ask about how I like Friespinel in a dark and obsessive way (in which the obsession comes from Spinel and Friede, when in his right mind, is like, "get a hobby that doesn't include me" lmao), so let's talk about something sweet!

My favorite healthy, actually romantic relationship for Friede is Friede/Murdock. This one I imagine to be very slow burn, because Friede has always been something of a free (heh) spirit who was never really into committed relationships; he had lots of friends with benefits situations, or short flings wherever he landed before moving on, but never a steady, committed relationship. But Murdock is the type of person who needs a committed, monogamous relationship. And so Murdock wouldn't approach Friede even after developing feelings, because he knows how Friede is and doesn't want to tie him down, or make Friede feel like he has to change himself just because Murdock has feelings for him. And when Friede starts hitting on Murdock, he'd notice something was off and would apologize for offending him, and that's when Murdock would be like, "You are very attractive and kind, but I can't do a casual relationship." And Friede would have to take some time to think on that, consider his own feelings and whether he could do a steady relationship (because he wouldn't want to hurt Murdock either), and ultimately would decide that he does want to give it a shot. And so they would start a relationship, taking it a little slow at first, and it would all be very sweet.

. . . and then Friede got yeeted off the airship like three months later, oops.

Other ships?

It's my headcanon that Friede and Orio, while they've never had romantic feelings for each other, did have a friends with benefits situation back when they first set out on the Brave Asagi. Friede was the one who approached Orio with it, feeling like it'd be good stress relief for her especially after she spent all day working on the ship / keeping it running. And at first Orio rebuffed him, because she didn't have romantic feelings for him and didn't want to lead him on. But he assured her that no, he didn't have romantic feelings for her either, this was just a fun way to unwind. And after promising each other that they would call it off the second either one of them started catching feelings (if they ever did), they went for it. (It was very much Friede saying, "I know you're stressed and tired, let me help you relax" and Orio having to understand that the only love he had for her was platonic friend love, he promised, he was not going to get his heart broken lol.)

Similarly, he had a fling with Sohdayo, because Sohdayo is a similarly free spirit like Friede is, and was down to have a good time. However, Friede called it off when he noticed Mollie's growing crush on Sohdayo. (Which never went anywhere, but Sohdayo did still unintentionally lead her on, and that's a big part of the reason why he left the crew.)

Someday I'll make a relationship chart between the adults of the RVTs. Just get it all out in the open. It's easier that way.

BROTP

With Cap, of course! The way their relationship kicked off is just beautiful, and I particularly love the episode where they were in disagreement over how best to track down the Bramblin, lol. And now of course, Friede is gone and Cap carries him everywhere via the goggles . . . it hurts so good.

That said, I also really love his relationship with Orio! I really think that he's closest with her out of the rest of the RVTs, not only because they're childhood friends but because they vibe very well. They bring out each other's inner child, and are capable of baiting each other into doing something silly and-or stupid within less than a minute. At the same time, though, they can count on each other for anything and are often the first human either one goes to when they need to vent or talk through something. They're besties for life. <3

NOTP

Friede x anyone under the age of 18, with the main one I see in fandom being with Amethio. He's a free spirit, yeah, but he's not going to hurt a child or teenager, even if the teenager has a precocious crush and thinks they're mature enough to handle it. (Because the idea of Amethio confessing to Friede in a way reminiscent of Mr Darcy is very funny, but Friede would never be into that and would let him down as gently as he could. Which, with how much pride Amethio has, would be difficult . . . but Friede would do his best.)

An assortment of headcanons! 

I think I've mentioned this before, but I see him as 33 when the series starts, and so he'd be 35 now if he hadn't died :')

He's pansexual, and a service top, i.e., he's dominant in bed because his pleasure comes from when he's making his partner have an excellent time.

He sewed all the patches on his jacket himself, and is always looking for new ones to add to it.

He did in fact get that Charizard patch from the Blackthorn Dragon Tamer clan, after he spent around six months in the mountains there training with Char.

He is very adamant about Cap being the captain of the Rising Volt Tacklers. Any time someone tries to say he's the captain, he corrects them.

He generally takes his coffee black, without any milk or sugar.

He'll drink in social situations, such as when he and the rest of the adult crew go out to a pub (a much rarer occurrence once they have kids on board), but otherwise he's not big into alcohol and he's always good at minding his limits. To that end, he's never had a hangover.

The idea of dying peacefully in bed, regardless of his age, is horrifying to him. It's not that he wants to die in some tragic way, necessarily, but rather that he wants his life to be exciting until the very end. Better to go out with a bang than a snore, in his mind.

He feels that traveling the world on the Brave Asagi with his crew of besties to study the mysteries of pokémon is his one true calling, and he got a tattoo of the Brave Asagi over his heart to commemorate that.

He loves playing poker, but he's not very good at it. However, he is a good pool player, and when times have been financially desperate on the Brave Asagi, has hustled pool to make some emergency cash in the past. (And then when the people he played against got mad about it, he told him he'd give it all back if they beat him in a battle, which they didn't. He quickly learned to keep this kind of thing to his last night in any given place, because it did not make him popular with the local bar-hoppers, lol.)

For his Terastal Course, he battled Larry for his Basics, and Tyme for his Practical. (She was still a Gym Leader when he did his course, you see.)

Many companies and labs have tried to scout him to come work for them since he left Exceed, despite how he left the company. Friede always turns them down politely, but once they're out of earshot he tells Cap, "If I ever agree to work in an office again, kill me." Cap promised that he would.

Collection of WIPs for my newest honkai 3rd AU: a synth- and post-punk band AU! featuring the band “Mirror Mirage”

I dont want to put too many details down yet since i intend to do more with this and don’t necessarily want to spoil future story stuff, but the gist of it is that its an AU focused on the villainous Herrscher personas (except Veli, but she fits the vibe lol)

The tentative setting I’m working with for now is Central Florida and its meant to be a more serious/realistic AU with a focus on young adult life, not late-teens stuff. Think less “fun times at Perfect Fairytale College(TM) with my besties! Lets have fun and study today!” and more “rent is due, my roommates are assholes, the hourly bus is 20 minutes late again, and i almost got hit by a drunk driver on my way to work for the third time week and it’s only Tuesday”. That sort of thing lmao

I’m not sure if there’s any real interest in a story that focuses more on some underrated characters like Herrscher Mei (not normal Mei as a Herrscher, but her alternate persona), much less a story that also deals with more serious IRL issues

Mei is bassist and a vocalist, formerly lead until Kiana (more precisely HoV in Honkai terms) joined; Mei also handles the finances as she is an accountant in her day job working at a community redevelopment agency. Has a strong sense of justice and puts on an air of confidence and superiority on stage and when fending off hostile folks, but acts with great humility with the ordinary people she encounters in her daily life.

Kiana is the (new) lead vocalist. Works the graveyard shift at a gas station and is a self-proclaimed “cynical asshole” that barely gets along with anyone else; also plays the guitar occasionally. She was dragged in by Mei and reluctantly joined the band, leading to an awkward and tense relationship with the others, but her incredible skill as a vocalist means the rest of them put up with her shitty attitude.

Seele is the lead guitarist; she is an immigrant from Estonia and came to the US with Elysia a couple years back, in early 2022. Keeps in touch w/ Bronya, who is still living back in Europe. Tends to be a bit withdrawn but is very loyal to the band and would throw hands to protect the crew. Seele has Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and is a system comprised of two alters: Saule and Veliona. Veliona is the one that actively plays in the band.

Elysia (HoC in Honkai terms) is the synth player and mixer, and does a lot of work in planning and executing complicated tracks both live and in studio recordings. Despite being having no local heritage, she loves switching between a southern cowgirl persona and her usual preppy nice-girl persona. Since Elysia is said to be from “Vladivostok 51” in Honkai canon, that would make her Russian; however for the purposes of this story im headcanoning her as Ukrainian (which ik is far from Vladivostok irl), simply to mix things up a bit, lol

Fu Hua (Senti in Honkai terms) is the drummer; still a college student, shes a bit of an odd one out in the group, but was there since the beginning and has grown close with the rest. Has a bit of an attitude and says cocky things, but is much more timid at heart and acts a lot more calm with her friends at school.

A huge part of the inspiration for this story is a desire to try and depict the more ordinary aspects of urban life, adding flavor to mundane daily activities without relying on magic or scifi or high-octane action and drama. The villains of the story aren’t comic book supervillains, but rather its the various systems that the characters have to live within- corrupt governance, financial struggle, societal divide, etc.

I also really want to tell a story that emphasizes the queer experience. Not just the usual lovey-dovey girls-love stuff, but what life is actually like for real women in real sapphic relationships when living in the state that passed the infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill IRL. As much as I love the canon KiaMei relationship in Honkai 3rd, i think it’s hella sanitized and can’t really convey the depth of the history and culture of the LGBTQ+ community. So I’m hoping to address this by placing their relationship in a specific real setting, one where LGBTQ+ folks (including myself) have to fight for our rights, acceptance, and representation.

As for musical inspiration I largely draw from a few big sources: one of the bigger inspirations is ASTROPHYSICS & MINTTT, as well as more recently Chappell Roan; genre influences include rock/punk, synth/EDM, and Sovietwave! This is both inspiration for their vibes and also for what type of music i imagine this band would play

Stuart hails from Ayr, Burns country, on the West Coast of Scotland, an hour south of Glasgow. He studied drama at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS)

Best known for playing a leading role in both films in the epic Netflix ‘Rebel Moon’ series directed by Zack Snyder, ‘A Child of Fire’ (2023) and ‘The Scargiver’ (2024) in which he played Den. In 2016 playing the leading role of Lorenzo de Medici in the first series of Netflix’s Renaissance drama ‘Medici’, starring opposite Richard Madden. Interestingly, both actors are on the list of contention' to become the first Scottish Bond since the legendary Sean Connery.

Apparently impressed Eon Productions owners Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who produce the Bond films his tough guy role of Bradley Cage in Zack Snyder’s 2021 heist comedy “Army of Thieves” which has sparked the Bond interest, thanks to his impressive shoot out scenes which involved throwing himself at vehicles in high-octane stunts.

Stuart Martin is 39 years old, and six foot two, this makes him the exact height Sean Connery was when he played Bond. And at just shy of 40, he's the perfect age. But, Still, This is a rumour, We won't know for sure who the next James Bond is until EON and Amazon make the official announcement.

It's hard to miss the fact that Scotland is full of experienced actors, and above line talent in order to create sustainable characters at the moment. But, For now, the possibility of Stuart Martin feels not only plausible but a classic choice, too.

911 writers wanted to have their cake and eat it too, trying to fit a Hangover-style plot into a single episode dedicated to the Madney wedding. And frankly after everything Madney has been through, I would’ve preferred something stripped back, simple, focused on the couple and everything that’s gotten them to this day, surrounded by friends and family. I would’ve loved an episode centered on love finding a way, dedication paying off, with sweet parallels reflected in all the other relationships in the show, how Madney has influenced and been influenced by Henren, Bathena, and Buddie. I wish they hadn’t overcomplicated things to this degree, KNOWING there isn’t enough time, and I doubt tonight’s episode is going to have any kind of cohesion or emotional payoff. Like, I get it, it’s a cool concept, but if you don’t have time, then you should strip back your ideas until you have something that does fit 40 minute runtime, you don’t try to cram in a bunch of stuff just because Wow Cool. This feels tone-deaf, like when you ask a five year old to plan a romantic anniversary, and he goes ahead and orders 200 cupcakes, a magician, and a bouncy castle.

In general, I wish 911 would slow down and stop prioritizing spectacle over substance. As a thought exercise, the writers should do a bottle episode: one location, simple plot. Then they will be forced to focus once again on characters, on the simple things that make this show great, not all this glitz and glamour and high-octane, high-budget bullshit.

(And once, just ONCE the writers should be made to study and highlight the impact of previous episode decisions. I’m tired of lead characters damaging each other, making dumb and/or brilliant choices, and we never see an ounce of impact. I’m talking Chimney punching Buck, I’m talking Buck body-checking Eddie, any one of these characters dealing with a long-term pain from an injury, there are SO many examples. When there's no follow-up to moments like this, no closure, I stop caring. Clearly the writers don't care, it's all just plot glitter, so what's the point?)

Listen, for all I know, I’m whining for nothing and they’ve kicked it out of the park with this episode. But I’d be shocked if that’s the case, and more likely I’m afraid I’ll turn back to this post after the episode has aired and be like, “*sigh* Same old, same old.”

i'm so glad you asked! taskmaster is a ridiculously entertaining gameshow that originated here in the uk with other versions in other countries. it's super fun to make aus/character studies around the tasks because they're so telling of personality!

the format of the show is - 5 comedians per season are set tasks by host greg davies (6'8" ex-schoolteacher, and it shows) and creator/cohost alex horne (the brains behind it, but onscreen is very weaselly/neeky and generally picked-on).

each episode begins with a prize task, in which contestants must bring in prizes to be won by the winner each day - the most high-octane item, the thing that makes the best noise, the most difficult thing to take home. prizes range from body parts to furnished bathroom sets. these, along with every other task, are scored in the studio from 1-5 points. the rest of the tasks are filmed beforehand mostly in one house, individually and sometimes in teams, and are incredibly arbitrary, silly, confusing or difficult:

eat as much watermelon in 60 seconds. eat an egg the fastest (it starts raw). interview, then write and perform a song about this stranger. conceal an entire pineapple on your person. take three huge exercise balls to the top of this large hill. make the biggest mess, then clean it up. get this object as far away from here as possible. go the longest time without blinking.

sarah kendall purposefully, blindfoldedly, throws her own house and car keys into the trees in front of the building. james acaster gets taken aside onstage to be told off by greg like a schoolboy. respected academic richard osman throws a shopping trolley into a river in a fit of rage (it is retrieved). nish kumar and mark watson write a genuinely beautiful song together. bob mortimer makes a floor-size chart documenting the amount of piss produced across britain.

the episodes end with a live task in the studio in front of the audience. the show allows the contestants to genuinely go off the rails with comedic creativity and problem solving, and it's SO fun to impose characters onto this template. person gets presented with task -> completes task as they see fit -> is judged on their actions -> reacts to the judgement. like if you want to develop an oc. look no further!! put them on taskmaster in your brain.

every contestant, whether it be famous comedians, up-and-coming stand-ups, or actors & presenters, really shine in taskmaster. people who i don't really find funny become entertaining and i root for them simply because of the genius format of the show.

it gets gross, argumentative, tense, earnest, and never ever loses the clownish spirit and light-heartedness of the meaningless and hilarious program it sets out to be. greg davies is ruthlessly harsh with points, alex horne is endlessly nitpicky and often bullied, and they frequently bring up fanfiction written about the two of them for some fucking reason. they embody such perfectly fine-tuned characters, only to break them constantly to laugh at the show.

A Jt Leroy Rant

As a comprehensive book Ive come to prefer "Sarah" but I also think "babydoll" and "coal" are her best pieces if you dont count THIDAAT as a novel and instead recognize the stories in it as individual works bound by a theme and ordered somewhat chronologically

Harolds End grew on me as i matured but when I read it as a teenager I didn't fully understand it enough to appreciate it, how much something as small and incapable of reciprocating love as a snail becomes to this boy who in reality doesn't have anybody but the fellow unfortunates he keeps company with for attention and the men who want to use his body. By expecting nothing from him the snail IS able to show love for him. But as a teenager as much as I loved the art it wasn't as edgy or high octane as the other two pieces i had to grow into an emotional comprehension of it as a study in loneliness

"Meteors" is also a special piece to me because I feel like we get to see a rare desperate, vulnerable Sarah failing to cope that her sexuality, the only worth she shees herself to have but believes she has it infinitely and unconditionally, has been rejected and really painting the first casual interaction we see her attempt to have with a mentally stable adult who isnt an addict or pimp or part of the underworld themself and seeing how shes reached this stage where without realizing shes become so far gone that stable normal adults find her off-putting and dont want to interact with let alone sexually/romantically involve themselves with her and Jeremiah's unwavering dedication to doing anything to prove HIS love to her and the sense of defeat when that love isn't good enough for her and she gives him a head injury trying to attract the meteor man and then abandons him when the tactic fails as if to her he and his devotion were just a means to an end and I wonder what part having his love always treated as inferior and secondary to love from a man damaged his ability to grow up with the sense that he was a worthy/suitable/lovable man or would ever grow up into something "worthy" of the love he craved but instead was used as a disposable tool in an attempt to secure by his mother potentially influanced the character's development of gender dysphoria, nt just the validation and love he received from Sarah as a girl but the rejection he constantly faced by her in favor of other males giving him the message that the love he had to offer as a male was insignificant compared to the love of "real" men.

I also think (and i could totally be reaching) that there's a suggestion of Sarah being Autistic/Neurodivergent in Meteors with her inability to successfully transmit or receive social signals. Savanah's portrayal of JT always gave me autistic vibes too, I have a very similar dysregulated volume and stutter when i read out loud and a lot of the body language she appropriates in her fidgeting and body language and use of eye contact (even with the glasses she often speaks to people pointing her head not toward them) are something that as an autistic person id clock another person in a bar as probably autistic by. I know verbal autism wasnt super recognized at the time but do you think to some degree her performance mimicked autistic traits without knowing the word for what she was acting out was autism? Or was she herself autistic and it just came through in her performance? because Sarah in so many ways reminds me of so many polysubstance addicted religiously traumatized hypersexual girls aging out of their playboy years who are also on the spectrum including myself to some degree. Also I can't praise "Coal" enough for being such a starkly accurate of not just a psychotic episode but of the public's response to not wanting to deal with the inconvenience of involving themself in a compassionate way and just letting it escalate until it becomes a problem for the cops to deal with as somebody who experiences psychotic episodes myself. Sarah really blows my mind in how she manages to be so fragile and vulnerable and you want to rescue her almost even while shes doing objectively evil things with a boldness that as the reader you are left wondering if she even has the neurological capacity for empathy and to recognize Jeremiah as an autonomous sentient being instead of a burdensome belonging, like her actions are so despicable but instead of leaving the reader hating her they raise the question of her mental capacity to even realize that what shes doing is wrong and shes causing harm to a person who can feel the pain of that harm, that maybe she rejects his love like she disregards his pain not because shes not open to it but because she's lacking something cognitive that is required to see that love or pain are things Jeremiah is capable of experiencing as if shes living in a delusion where shes the only real person which is a major factor of NPD (another diagnosis of mine but a sort of post traumatic psychosis where u dont manually recognize other humans and autonomous and sentient and existing when ur not perceiving them and have the delusion that you are the only "real" person and therefor any person u harm doesnt matter past the consequences u face for it because since theyre not "real" like you they are capable of preforming the act of things like love or pain for you to observe but dont actually FEEL it like you wuld in their shoes bc they arent actually sentient)

I also think A Sissy Spacek type would have been more suited to the role than Asia, Asia was very stiff and offered no vulnerability that we see from the character in the book her portrayal was very harsh and villainous when in the book Sarah is clouded by trauma and substance abuse and desire for male validation and mentally ill and trying the best i think shes capable of trying but fucking up, asias portrayal of the character was very in control and malicious. She was also too magazine hot, she didnt give "debilitatingly mentally ill long term polysubstance abuser" visually she gave "pin up" not "shoulder of the road shopping bag bottle collecting lady" like she becomes in the book. i also think Asia was too old for the role, she looked obviously 30 when part of sarah's entire problem is shes an 18 year old mentally ill addict with no support at first shes just a child herself trying to have fun and have her son, just a little girl who thinks she can have her cake and eat it too who deteriorates into a person who does genuinely evil things partially out of having never learned better or been set a better example, Asia looked on the old side to even be a club stripper at all at like a real world truck stop and was just like clearly feeling herself way too hard and it tainted her performance

But also both Girl Boy Girl and her rape of Jimmy Bennet have soured me toward her so i suppose im more inclined to be looking for flaws in her performance. I also think its disgusting and predatory that, like Dennis Cooper, she was under the assumption that JT was a traumatized sexually abused teenager and she not only proposed engaging him in sex even though part of his character was established to include that he was compulsively unable to deny sexual advances due to his sexual trauma but tried to use sex and feigned affection to get him to sign over the book rights so she could make her movie. While Im a "separate the art from the artist" person and am still a fan of the technical craft aspect and transgressive reaches in Cooper's writing knowing his inappropriate interactions with "jt" who he believed to be a minor a lot of his work feels less transgressive and more smutty/goonerish like hes not trying to make a point about the complexity of sexuality hes just writing fucked up sex scenes and getting off to them and its insane nerve to be the outed offending pedophile in the situation and then act like the victim and go after Laura for (not being a real abused child that he was sexually exploiting? Sexually exploiting a child is in his eyes more acceptable than getting a little out of bounds with a pen name?) I did think "the sluts" was an interesting literary response to the situation but if he felt hoodwinked he could have cut professional ties and moved on to some new target, the entitlement and lack of accountability in going after her made me lose most of my respect for him as much as like I said I do enjoy his technical craft and find his works interesting reads. Again how are you going to be exposed as an active offending pedophile and then play victim because you didnt get to actually abuse a real traumatized child? Male audacity astounds me.

You know, despite Nazz being the most bland and forgettable of the kids, I also think she's (ironically) the most versatile at the same time. She might be both a tomboy and a girly girl, she fits in two trios (sometimes she's hanging out with Kevin and Rolf, sometimes she's hanging out with Sarah and Jimmy- something that hardly applies to the other characters), she has a fair share of interests (sports, studying law, fashion, music, math according to her report card) and actually a good jokes and gags (she eats A LOT, she's poor in music, and according to ''Mission-Ed Possible'' she's also bad in cooking). There so much directions they could took with her... and she's the only nice girl on the show.

I guess since most of the writers were men, they preferred or were more comfortable writing for male characters most of time (or they just assumed most of the target public/audience were boys, like usually happened in that time).

Yeah I actually like Nazz as a character and of all the kids on the show she is absolutely the most pleasant one to be around! Unfortunately given the high octane slapstick, exaggerated personalities, and overall humor of the show she sort of gets lost. Nazz functions to fit some role in service of the plot rather than plots being driven by some key aspect of her personality or interests. Which as a side character makes some sense but I feel like each of the side characters get their moments to shine! When we get a Nazz focused episode it’s really more about how all the boys feel about her. Nazz’s desires, motives, history, and perspective aren’t super fleshed out which is my main critique.

For a show about the awkwardness of puberty she is astoundingly well adjusted. I always assumed she was slightly older than the Eds so maybe 13-14? She’s inexplicably very mature. I kind of wish we got a sense of why that was the case! Like, we know Edd is the responsible one in his respective trio because he has to an extremely independent kid at home (and has mad anxiety). I don’t know what drives Nazz to be thoughtful, kind, and relatively more mature. Does anyone else? In the series bible she is described as “most mature of the kids, or so she thinks” and man do I want to know more what that means! Like maybe she should have been shown being more self conscious about wanting to seem older/ more mature than her age. It doesn’t get explored really!

And then there is just the reality of being a middle schooler! Scott Underwood posted a drawing of Nazz where she has leg hair and I’m kind of mad nothing like that got incorporated in the show!! That sort of character design choice gets relegated to the Kanker sisters (obsessed with that photo of Lee shaving her legs in the fucking kitchen sink, what an icon).

It’s why I find the interface of the Kankers and Nazz so interesting - I risk sounding like a broken record but I’ve been saying the same shit for like 10 years now. And while the Kankers aren’t necessarily the most well rounded either they ARE much more interesting to me because the crew wasn’t afraid to make them unlikable or gross or tackle their pubescent growing pains or their messed up love/hate relationship to men.

Idk this is just my take! I could be missing some things, so I’m curious how other folks feel about Nazz!

My Intro to Cozy Fantasy | Review

I was so lucky as to recently have a dear friend recommend and lend me three books as my introduction to the subgenre of cozy fantasy: Spellshop and the first two books of the Emily Wilde series.

I was curious if I would mesh well with cozy fantasy, as while I like romances, contemporary romance novels don't generally tend to do it for me (with my primary exposure being Sarah Dessen titles, The Love Hypothesis, and Me Before You). I'll enjoy the ride, but they don't really take up any real estate in my brain. I prefer my books to stay with me, to change my life just a little.

But I took the leap, and by branching out, I learned a lot about my own preferences, both in reading and writing.

Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst

This book was the archetype I both pictured and feared for cozy fantasy.

Kiela is a librarian for the Crescent Empire, who is supposed to guard spell-books and all the collected knowledge of the Empire. Magic is forbidden except for state-sanctioned sorcerers, who roam about the Empire fixing various things.

The Empire is overthrown by rebels and Kiela's library burns, leading her to take the spell books and flee to a remote island where her parents owned a bit of property that has since been abandoned to create a new life. Which she decides to do by using the forbidden spells to revitalize her hometown and fronts this with a jam shop.

All the while, she falls for her neighbor, Larran, a mer-horse farmer who is really shy and fixes things for her.

I liked the concept of following the ordinary inhabitants of a high fantasy world in domesticity amongst the high-octane events that normally dominate the genre.

In practice, while pleasant, the book was kind of bland. I liked Kiela more than other Goodreads reviewers upon first read, as her grumpy introvert nature was deeply relatable to me.

Larran is nice, I suppose, but I felt he didn't really have much character. He's just a patient, shy guy with a dark backstory and no real flaws or nuances.

The other characters are nice enough, and I do believe that Spellshop does an excellent job setting out to do what it intended.

It just personally wasn't for me.

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries & Emily Wilde's Map to the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett

I'll be blunt and admit I enjoyed this series way more.

Dr. Emily Wilde is a professor at Cambridge in 1909 in the field of Dryadology, the study of fairies. In this alternate history of earth, fairies are studied and omnipresent, and scholarship has boomed in the last generation.

Emily intends to create the first encyclopedia of fairies and types, and to complete her research heads north to the remote village in Scandinavia to study "the tall ones." She is followed by her academic rival and only friend, Wendell Bambleby, a foppish and cheerful researcher who sees them as close friends, ignorant to Emily's view of Wendell as her irritating rival.

They become embroiled in a generations-old story in the village and as they continue their research, must figure out how to save the village while navigating the mystery of Wendell's ambiguous nature.

I'm not sure if this is necessarily cozy, as it falls into the typical grim-dark pre-medieval European and Celtic-inspired fairy tropes that have dominated the fantasy market for all ages for nearly the past three decades. As much as I enjoyed this book and many more that employ this trope, I'm admittedly growing sick of this depiction.

But that is neither here nor there.

Bambleby is book boyfriend status, and Emily Wilde delights me as a female Mr. Darcy type. The academia is painfully accurate, similar to how The Love Hypothesis mainly nails that environment. The plot is engaging and I enjoyed the twists and turns along the way.

Why GG over other FGs?

I have quite a few people who ask me just WHY I prefer Guilty Gear over other fighting games.

And really, it's not exactly like I dislike other fighting games in a big way.

I can appreciate a good Melty Blood session, and Skullgirls interests me, even if my skill level in that game is very low.

BlazBlue evokes other strong emotions in me, though I could also say the same for Samurai Shodown and Soul Calibur, as well as Battle Arena Toshinden and Bloody Roar.

Even Under Night In-Birth is a game for which I've begun to hold a candle for... and Mortal Kombat 11 and 1 are pretty much mainstays in my library of Fighting Games as well at this point.

So what makes Guilty Gear different from any of those games?

For me, it starts with the music.

It is also fundamentally a weapons-based fighting game, very much like SamSho and Soul Calibur. Under-Night also has a lot of weapons-based characters in its roster as well.

But it isn't the usual collection of weapons you'd expect. Most weapons in Guilty Gear are SPECIAL. They go above and beyond... like something out of RWBY or Dead Fantasy (shoutouts to the ghost of Monty Oum).

So yeah, it's the music, it's the weapons... but it's also the collection of voice actors gathered together... the right mix of characters.

The low-beat voice of Potemkin, the high-tension voice of Ky... the intensity of Sol Badguy's voice... the high octane voice of Bedman... the insanity of Dr. Faust, A.B.A., and Zappa... and the list goes on.

But, I want people to understand something... the Music of Guilty Gear doesn't simply START with the soundtrack of Strive with its modern lyrics and fresh songs... the music of GG started a long time ago... the Metallica thrashing of the original 1998 game.

And that music never stopped.

So when I play GG... I don't simply play it for the most recent songs... I play it for the classic themes... for the rival themes, for the moods that evoke intense memories of battles long past.

Whether you prefer the original GG, X, XXAC, Xrd, or Strive... none of that matters in my book... because they are ALL Guilty Gear games and share that same "world" that engages and inspires me.

The crazy antics of Robo-Ky... the in-period drama of Baiken and Nagoriyuki... the power invoked by Justice and Dizzy and even Ramlethal...

Things like Renaissance Paintings, Optical Illusions, Chains, Nails, Screws, and Oceans of Red Blood... Giant Monsters, Giant Statues, Elaborate Buildings, Flying Airships, or just an old run down castle creaking and swaying in the Night during a Thunderstorm.

What else does GG have to offer? History, Culture, Psychology, Ethics, Science, Humanity, Inhumanity, Conflict, Comedy, Mystery, Love, Rivalry, Semantics, and more...

I don't think I've ever found such an impactful series as Guilty Gear, at least compared to other fighting games.

Maybe it's just that I've been studying this series for so many years, or maybe it's just that I've never seen that level background content decorate a fighting game AS MUCH by comparison.

Certainly a huge chunk of it is about slicing the other guy in two, or bashing their head in with a headbutt... but if it were just about that... we wouldn't have philosophers like Happy Chaos, now would we?

So, it's the music, the technology, the designs, the voicework, the context, or perhaps even the CORE IDEAS presented.

Whereas some games only invoke one or two concepts... this series likes to jump from genre to genre, hardly skipping a beat in between.

Chaotic? Maybe. But amid the chaos is a certain rhythm and cadence which most will either not miss or enjoy on its own.

Hyper Fixation? You tell me. I think GG itself is a hyper fixation OF the fighting game genre. The mechanics are complex, the culture of the fanbase is varied... The sanity and insanity... Instinct and Intellect.

So why do I keep going back to this series?

What hasn't it done? What will it continue to do?

I don't have the answers to all of that.

But I do know that only a handful of games ever go out of their way to send a message to the player.

Maybe I just wish more games did this. Or maybe I wish more developers were as talented and cultured. I'm not entirely sure.

It's like the difference between a Stick Drawing and some complex painting done by Michelangelo.

You can still appreciate both... but there's only a handful of things that check all the boxes and fill all the requirements of my idea of a good game.

Am I spoiled? You bet.

Am I grateful? INDEED.

Do I want more games to do what GG does? Sure do.
