Every time Damen says something you know without a doubt that whatever it is, he's underselling it.

This man almost died from how badly Laurent had him flogged and he said "it wasn't that bad" making the physician look at him like he's insane because it was in fact that bad and Paschal was probably fighting to keep the life inside his body.

Also "yeah my brother stabbed me once but it was totally just an accident he didn't mean it."

Dude almost died again bleeding out on the floor and he described it like "haha it's okay it's not a moral wound, my organs are fine I'll be fine. Also my boyfriend is gonna be all cute and doting so getting stabbed is totally worth it." Meanwhile he actually nearly died.

That's how you know when Laurent mentions Damen being a foot taller and Damen says "it's significantly less than a foot" it actually translates to "it's more than a foot"

Or when they're having their divorce argument in the tent and Laurent is trying to be all "nuh-uh I don't like you I was faking it when you fucked me" and Damen calls him a liar and describes his own voice as being "too loud" that means that motherfucker is SCREAMING.

I didn’t do as much detail as I normally do because I couldn’t make it look right… so here’s a rather bland but complete piece

While in the book, Laurent mentions he “beat” Auguste when it came to horse riding only to find out he let him win, I feel like it may have been something Auguste does for more than horseback. I purposely referenced the sparring scene in Kings Rising as a sorta parallel. Enjoy!

the palace at Arles is always described as so ornate, and since Vere is clearly meant to be inspired by France, my mental image of the palace is colored by my trip to the palace of Versailles.

I’ve only been to Versailles once in my life, but it was beautiful. The hall of mirrors was absolutely stunning. That being said, honestly, a lot of the smaller rooms kind of blend together, so a lot of trip is forgotten. but what I DO remember clearly is that the place was gigantic and embellished and hard to navigate. Damen’s confusion being led through the halls? Relatable.

then I remember the one captive prince quote where Damen is like “this entire place is so decorated that it’s actually hurting my eyes”. while obviously Versailles isn’t a 1:1 match for the palace at Arles… if they’re similar at ALL, I get it buddy. Damen, I feel you. I feel you 100%

imagine you lived your whole life with the #minimalist aesthetic and now you are subjected to this (admittedly beautiful, but overwhelming) place

alternatively, imagine this being your house. this is where you grew up. You and your older brother ran down these halls together. insanity. No wonder Laurent’s pissed all the time, he’s got a 24/7 migraine from visual overstimulation

(side note: I also remember the gardens, and there were plenty of little nooks and crannies formed in the hedges that one could do all sorts of depraved things in, with semi-privacy. so that’s also consistent with Arles lol)

If Damen had a painters’ talent, this is what he would paint:

The way Laurent rides him, it's like a ritual every time. His powerful thighs will straddle Damen’s laps and his hands will rest on Damen's chest. His back is always very straight, a perfect rider’s posture. He will stare at Damen as he positions himself, the head of Damen’s cock brushing against Laurent’s entrance. And, then, Laurent starts.

He closes his eyes as he lowers himself on Damen. A small frown appears between his eyebrows and his mouth opens in a soundless o. No matter how much time Damen spends opening Laurent up with his fingers and mouth, the first intrusion is always a struggle for him, even after all these years, and Damen can’t help the heat that pools in his groin when he looks at Laurent.  Secretly - and selfishly - Damen used to fear he’d lose this: the look in Laurent’s face as he forces his body to accept Damen’s length. Lines in Laurent’s forehead join the one between his eyebrows as his frown deepens. Damen holds Laurent’s waist to help guide him down. He feels as Laurent’s hole gives, just a bit and not enough. Laurent bites his own lips and his nails sink into Damen’s chest. Damen smiles thinking about the marks he will bear later. 

‘You can do it,’ Damen says in encouragement. 

‘Shut up,’ Laurent replies. 

Damen wants to laugh, but Laurent takes a deep breath.  Slowly, he bears down on Damen. The head of his cock is finally breaching the stubborn muscle. The heat that engulfed him is heavenly. He wants to close his eyes but won’t risk missing it. Damen holds himself still.

Laurent shudders, letting out all the air he had been holding. A small moan escapes his lips and the corners of his mouth turn up into the ghost of a smile. He finally opens his eyes and looks into Damen’s. 

“You are not that big,” he says, teasing. 

“Mhm,” is all that Damen can say.
