“I can give you six-hundred.”

Kate frowns, watching this man with his little jewelers glass pressed to his eye, beard in desperate need of shaving, looking at the most prized possession she has left as if it were nothing.

“That’s crap! It’s a Sky-Dweller Oystersteel! It’s worth almost fifteen thousand on the open market!” She wants to reach out and snatch the watch away from him. She wants to tell him the story of how this is the only thing she has left of her father and the life she used to live.

She wants to break down into tears that she’s even in this situation at all - she might anyway just to see if the guilt can squeeze a few more dollars out of this old man.

Instead, he licks his teeth and sets his jewelers glass down. “It’s got scratches on the face, the band doesn’t clasp properly and this-” he turns the watch around to show Kate the engraving on the back that she’s memorized.

“An engraving immediately tanks the value, I’ll have to replace the back cover myself and that ain’t cheap.” He picks up the watch and holds it out to her. “Six hundred is all you’ll get, take it or take the watch and get out.”

She’s tempted, Kate thinks she should just yank the watch from him and storm off, but when she looks back and sees where she’s tied Lucky’s leash to a bike rack to wait for her, Kate knows she can't do that.

Lucky hasn’t eaten since yesterday morning, which is about twelve hours more recent than the last time she ate.

Taking a deep breath, Kate swallows her pride and the golf ball sized lump in her throat. “Okay,” she says, looking back at the shop-keep. “I’ll take it.”

When I was a kid I had some art lessons and the only thing I clearly remember from them is that you shouldn't draw a tree like a stick with some leaves on top of it. A tree is this grandiose, branching structure, uneven and thick
