Anti-Blackness is real and alive. It is deeply woven into the fabric of American society. It is why I jump at any opportunity to not only call attention to anti-Black racism and gender discrimination, but also work to eradicate it from the systems, institutions and structures on which America has been built. A few months ago, I got the chance to sit and chat with NYC’s Commission for Human Rights (CCHR) Artist-in-Residence, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, about anti-Black racism, how it’s affected me personally and professionally, and the steps I’ve taken to try to combat it. Tatyana is not only a gifted artist (please check out some of her work @stoptellingwomentosmile, @shesgottahave, and @okcontemporary) but an activist who uses both her voice and her paint brush to advocate for America’s most marginalized people—Black and Brown folks, women of color, and LGBTQ minorities. With her work she continues to push the discourse of race and gender-based discrimination and harassment to the forefront. It is an honor to not only have been drawn by Tatyana in her popular black and white charcoal style and featured in a mural in my old stomping grounds of Bed-Stuy, but more importantly, to be able to join her and CCHR in this effort to provoke this much necessary dialogue here in New York City and beyond.
