AN: I have not seen the finale. I am in denial. So here is a filler chapter that is sweet and cute and happy before whatever comes next. And I will continue this story. I've come too far to walk away from it now.
“are you sure you like ash?” I asked as I rubbed circles into my stomach. I looked up to see Dan in the bathroom, trimming his beard. “We can always change it. There’s Sam. Or Tony. Or gene. Or…”
“hey.” I paused as Dan leaned in the doorway, a small smile on his face. “I like ash. Since the moment you suggested it.”
“I know. But I just feel like we didn’t actually…” I trailed off as I realized how silly what I was thinking was. The sound of the sink running had me biting my lip in thought. Dan turned off the light as he came back into the room.
“didn’t actually what?” Dan asked as he climbed into bed next to me. He put his hand over mine and smiled as our baby kicked.
“put much thought into it.” I whispered as I focused on our hands. Dan chuckled as he leaned over to kiss my head.
“I mean we searched online.” He pointed out. “Not our fault that one of the first five names to come up was the one that stood out to us the most.” Dan wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me into him. “I love the name ash. It’s cute. And I think it’ll be perfect for our little girl. And it works either way if she grows up and says hey I’m a boy or even hey I’m nonbinary. If she wants to keep it.” I looked up at Dan with tears. “Well shit.” He muttered before wiping the tears off my cheeks.
“don’t be sorry.” I teased. Dan blushed as he looked at me. “I know you too well Reinhold. There is nothing for you to be sorry about. That was the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard.” Dan smiled as he leaned down to kiss me.
“I guess.” He whispered against my lips. Another little kick pulled us apart. “Oh everything’s fine ash. Just turning on the waterworks by being a good husband apparently.” I giggled as Dan leaned down to kiss the baby bump.
“Hard to believe there’s only three months left of this.” I whispered. Dan nodded.
“But then we’ll have a beautiful little girl to take care of.” He said. I smiled softly at him. "I honestly can't wait to meet her."
"Speaking of, we have to get to work on actually getting the things we need for her." I said. Dan nodded and grabbed my laptop. "I think somewhere I have a crib saved."
"As long as it isn't one of those IKEA disasters we'll be alright." Dan said as he looked through my bookmarks. "So this is what you do in your spare time. Good to know."
"Careful. There are birthday present ideas in there for you somewhere." I teased. Dan shot me a look and I started laughing. "I mean there are. But they're saved in a different tab."
“did you finish that baby registry thing Wyatt was talking about?” Dan asked. I nodded. “Did you put actual things in there or just a bunch of toys?”
“There’s blankets and shit in there. A changing table.” I shrugged as Dan clicked on the link. “Truth be told Wyatt helped me a lot with it. I think he added something’s for me too but I’m not entirely sure.”
“well there’s a baby carrier.” He mused as he scrolled down. “And a stroller. Did we pick a car seat yet or is there one in here?”
“that should be shipping soon. We ordered that like a week ago I think.” I said as I scanned the list. “And one of those wrap things to hold the baby to your chest. Like you had with digorno.” Dan chuckled and nodded. “Uh I think that’s about it. There’s just one thing that isn’t in there I think we need to get.”
“what’s that?” Dan asked as he set my laptop on the nightstand and settled down. I laid down on his chest and rubbed circles into his shirt.
“a teddy bear.” I said. “It’s kind a big deal in my family. My dad went nuts trying to find one for me. And my cousins did too for their kids. I don’t expect you to go crazy to find one. We can go to build a bear or something but honestly just keep your eye out for one I guess.”
“what if I told you I have one already?” Dan asked. He slowly got up and went to the closet. I watched him carefully as he came back out with a medium sized bear, brown all over with a small bow tie. I smiled as he held it out to me.
“this is perfect dan.” I said as I held it. “We might not have anything else ready but at least we have this.” Dan nodded as he got back into bed with me.

Old Enough by Haley Jakobson 5/5 stars | 📖 | Read 8/7 - 8/14, 2023
I had been excited for Old Enough ever since I learned of its existence. I mean, a coming of age story in a college setting is simply so perfect for my taste.
This book has a slow burn quality to it. I was reading this story about a young woman in her sophomore year of college and, before I knew it, I was so invested, feeling all the same emotions that she was feeling on the page. I found myself still thinking about the characters when I wasn’t reading, dying to know what happens next.
Jakobson handles the subject of sexual assault with such care, offering her characters space to work through their trauma and providing nuanced perspectives of what justice looks like. For Sav, coming to terms with her assault and naming what happened to her is a main aspect of her self-discovery, but it most definitely is not the only important part of her character. Sav’s story contains an equal amount of joy and messiness as she finds a queer community on her college campus that offers her security and stability— something she has struggled to find for possibly her whole life.
What resonated most is the discussion of female friendship. A major storyline revolves around Sav grappling with her strained friendship with her childhood best friend, Izzie, especially after the news of Izzie’s engagement. Stories that center and study friendship are always of interest to me, and learning about the complicated and loaded dynamics between Sav and Izzie was no different. The tension and pain of holding onto a years-long friendship when they both have outgrown it was so palpable and only compounded by the fact that Sav is desperate to escape her hometown and childhood for more reasons than one.
Jakobson has created a story full of such love, care, and tenderness. The book is a love letter to all survivors, queer people, women, and anyone who is still finding themselves, and that’s why Old Enough is so important. I am thankful for this book and can't wait for what Jakobson will publish in the future.

chapter 44

AN: hi. its been a while. I'm combining a few episodes so bare with me.
I rested against Dan as we waited for Roz. He was rubbing circles into my arm as I dozed off. Abbie looked over at us and my phone buzzed. Dan chuckled as I snuggled closer to him and ignored it.
"So have you two decided on a name?" She asked. I nodded. Dan rolled his eyes as he pressed a kiss to my head.
"Yes and no." He said. I shrugged as I sat up.
"We both agree on one name. Ash. But I like Alex. He likes Jesse." I said, stretching slightly. "Which means we're probably going to go with Ash." Dan nodded in agreement.
"Ash is a good name. Use it Fielding." Roz said, making Dan smile. He got up to go hug her. "You better be there for that kid Dan. Otherwise I'll come find you." She stuck her finger in his face and all he could do was shake his head at her. I smiled as I watched the interaction. Roz glanced at me and smiled. "And remember I'm expecting you to keep him in line. This man better put in the work."
"Oh you know I wouldn't let him slack off." I laughed as she came over to hug me.
"You're practically glowing." She whispered. "I don't know how you could let him do this to you but I'm glad you both are happy." I nodded as she broke away to talk to Abbie. Dan came back and kissed me softly.
"We still going to ask her?" I whispered. Dan nodded.
"No better person honestly." He said. "I mean Abbie would have but I honestly prefer her as an older sister at this point." I giggled and smoothed my hands over his suit jacket.
"She really has become your adoptive daughter hasn't she?" I asked. Dan blushed as he shrugged.
"I don't think Harry would let me get away with anything less." He admitted. I nodded. "I love you." I hummed happily as he kissed me.
"I love you too." I whispered. "Now go do your work thing. I'll go talk to Roz." Dan nodded and turned when she came back into the courtroom.
"How'd it go?" He asked. She shrugged and squeezed his arm.
"Abbie's gonna make it work." She said. Dan nodded. "But again thank you for the offer of a loan." I smiled softly as I remembered that particular conversation Dan had sat me down for. "Seems like Harry left more than just his good sense here." The two of them turned to look at Abbie.
"Yeah. Its still a little strange without him here but with her..." Dan shook his head and Roz nodded in agreement.
"I'm gonna stick around. Maybe the three of us can catch up once tonight is over." Roz said before looking over at the next defendants. "Or maybe I'll just hang out in the cafeteria."
"What..." Dan turned to follow her gaze. "Oh for fuck's sake." He muttered when he saw the Wheelers.
"Mr. Fielding!" The couple waved at Dan, bright smiles on their faces as I finally slid off Dan's desk.
"On that note, I'm gonna head out." I said, guiding Dan back to look at me before kissing him softly. "Don't kill them. Just get through this and everything will be fine." Dan nodded before kissing me again. Roz offered me her arm and I took it as we walked out of the courtroom. "They keep coming back and I swear if I hadn't seen the evidence I would think they were nuts."
"Oh I've seen the evidence and I still think they're nuts." Roz laughed. She found us a table before going to grab a coffee. I chewed on my lip as I tried to think about how I wanted to word the request Dan and I were going to made of her. A small bottle of juice was put in front of me, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Penny for your thoughts?"
"Just trying to think something through." I shrugged. "Before I chicken out, Dan and I wanted to ask you something." Roz nodded as she looked me over.
"Out with it then." She waved at me as she drank her coffee. I took a deep breath and steeled my nerves.
"We were wondering if you would be the godmother. To Ash." I said. Roz gave me a surprised look.
"I would have thought you would ask Abbie." She said. I nodded.
"I will admit we considered her. But in all honesty she would be more like the older sister. Dan has practically adopted her at this point." I shrugged. Roz laughed.
"And you're ok with that?" She asked. I nodded with a smile.
"Honestly yeah." I said. "The way Dan is, I figure this is practice for Ash's teen years. Besides. I think the two of them need each other almost as much as Dan and I need each other." Roz smiled.
"So you see it too." She played with her coffee cup. "If that is what the two of you really want, then I guess I could do it." Roz nodded. "All I'd have to do is help take care of the kid right?"
"Pretty much." I shrugged. "Well I assume so. My godparents were basically babysitters." Roz nodded.
"Mine were too." She agreed. "Well you can bet I'll be there as more than just a babysitter to this kid." I smiled at her as she reached over and squeezed my hand. We fell into a comfortable silence after that. When break rolled around, Dan came and sat down next to me. He greeted me with a kiss before taking a seat next to me.
“so…roz…” Dan said, shifting slightly as he put his arm over my shoulders. “Did uh (Y/N) ask you…”
“as much as I like seeing you uncomfortable like this,” roz teased. “Yes they did. And I agreed. But I’m not just going to be a babysitter whenever you feel like it fielding.” Dan smiled at her and reached over for her hand.
“I wouldn’t dream of it.” He assured her. “Thank you roz. Really. It means a lot to us. To me.” I smiled at the two of them before squeezing dans thigh.
“how’s it going with the wheelers?” I asked. Dan sighed and let his head fall onto my shoulder.
“I made a bet with Julianne. That I could take any case and beat her. I almost had it too. But they opened their mouths and I lost.” He sighed. I started to run my fingers through his hair as I chuckled.
“that’s what you get for betting on the wheelers.” I teased. Dan groaned.
“you should know better Dan. You know them better than anyone.” Roz joined in.
“oh great. Now there’s two of them.” He grumbled as he sat up. I leaned into him as he wrapped an arm around my waist, hand on my stomach.
“that’s right fielding. And soon there’ll be three.” Roz laughed. “Your worst nightmare.” Dans head found my shoulder again as I laughed.

[N4] はじめてのおつかい
Picture books always seem to be the easiest medium to start reading in Japanese with. But in my experience they frequently turn out to be more difficult than expected.
This story about Mii-chan doing her first errand alone is intended for Japanese children age 3 to 5, but for learners I think even JLPT N4 level readers will face some challenges with vocabulary and onomatopoeia.
That being said, it is a very cute story and definitely worth the read!
