Most of the crew is all fascinated with Jaal in their own ways but I really love that Drack is suspicious of him. I had to bring Jaal on Kadara despite how much he seems to hate the planet and the way Drack talks to him is so funny. The conversations I've heard so far is Drack questioning Jaal that there must be more to him, the Angara and about the scourge, and Jaal says he has no idea what hes talking about. Then Drack tries to relate to him about how the Kett went after the Angarans, like how the Salarians went after the Krogan. And Jaal said he hasn't met many Salarians but they don't seem like the Kett. And Drack is like you're right, you haven't met many Salarians. I love everything Drack says 😂

I don't think Thane would survive 7 rounds. I don't think he can get past round 2 without some serious health repercussions. In ME3, anything more than one kiss was too much for him and that's understandable. Sex can be exhausting.

Like I love him, but after one... rather short round, he's done. All serene and smiley, looking to cuddle and doze off. I wouldn't have the heart to tell him I haven't finished yet, so I'll just stroke his cheek and let him bury his face against my chest. He's been through a lot, he deserves to be cherished and loved despite being mid in bed.

In the fanfiction series pray for disaster (when the world is razed we’ll still be burning) by the Archive Of Our Own user Omegalomania, also known as Zero or @graffitibible on Tumblr, there are a variety of words used by characters to indicate a person’s gender identity. These do not match up with our world’s concepts of gender. These words (starshine, earthshine, luneshine, and ringshine) are based on the word “sunshine.” As the society this series is based in is a very informal, unregulated one, “sunshine” takes the place of the formal “person” and informal “guy,” “bro,” or “dude,” albeit in a much more gender-neutral way than either of the latter. This is, at least, the case for the second generation of Killjoys, whose worldview and times we are the most sunk into. Four books are solely about this second generation, more page-time than any of the other three generations we see are given.

Starshine is the Zones’ word for “person who uses he/him.” Luneshine means “person who uses they/them.” Earthshine means “she/her,” and ringshine means “person who uses something different from the above (i.e. it/its or e/em, etc.).” “Woman” and “man” seem to have lost their meanings sometime during the first generation of Killjoys— during the Analog Wars. “Woman” appears only ten times in Peacemaker’s story; seven of those times, Peacemaker is referring to herself. “Man,” (as its own word, not part of “many” or various other words, as far as I can discern quickly) appears only a few more times than that, but no more than thirty times. The books told from the perspectives of the Fabulous Four have as few or fewer mentions; likewise, the Girl’s book only has one mention of the word “woman,” which is in reference to Battery City’s Director. “Woman” and “man”, as labels for a gender identity, became obsolete in the first generation of Killjoys, during the Analog Wars, and were replaced at some point by the various “-shine”s.

I tried to find a closer look at when they may have appeared. Peacemaker, who had not heard of these words, was dracked (brainwashed) in 2012; yet, when Party Poison and the Kobra Kid escape Battery City, all of the words are in widespread use. This means the words must have popped up between those dates. Fun Ghoul’s perspective, we put the faith back in mayhem (it's important to enjoy what you do), reenforces this; all four pop up when he's around thirteen or fourteen. In a comment made on January 10, 2024 on don't tell me to rest in peace while you're still picking the bones of my memory, the author notes that he was eighteen or nineteen when they died in 2019, meaning he was born in 2000 or 2001. Through other context, I was able to figure out that the words were spreading over the radio waves in late 2013 or early 2014. Ghoul escaped Battery City in mid- or late-2012, in the confusion of the Fires of 2012 when the Analog Wars were ended. Shortly before NewsAGoGo, who Ghoul is staying with, mentions any of the ‘shines (Faith, ¼ of the way through chapter 3), Ghoul mentions that he escaped the city “maybe a year, maybe longer” ago (Faith, 1/6 through the way through chapter 3). From this, we can determine that use of the ‘shines was definitely widespread by mid-2014.

This can be narrowed down, however. Kobra mentions the Analog Wars ending (They Made, two-thirds of the way through chapter 1) just before a quick montage of how his training changes as a result of the Wars ending; after this montage, he mentions that he is “thirteen years old, on the leaderboard for a year and counting” (They Made, three quarters of the way through chapter 1). 9 months later, “less than three months from final exams” (They Made, three-quarters of the way through chapter 2), he escapes the City with his brother. "Final exams" were to be taken when he turned fourteen. Therefore, my hypothesis is that the Analog Wars ended at least two, and at most six, months before he turned thirteen. This leaves a gap between the Analog Wars ending and his escape of at least eleven and at most fifteen months for the generation and propagation of the terms. At the very earliest, the ‘shines would have been in widespread use in mid-2013. At the very latest, they would have popped up in early 2014.

How, though, might the words have spread, and what (in-universe) could have possibly inspired them? The first question is easy to answer: the DJs, the voices of the desert, spread a truly ludicrous amount of slang around the desert. They are the reason that Killjoys have any sort of cohesive culture and vocabulary. I assume that most widespread slang, such as “shiny” (meaning good) and “red-line” (to vacate a place quickly) would have originated in a crew with a good relationship with a DJ, who would have then used said slang as a way to further encode messages over the radio.

My personal theory is that Show Pony had a key role to play in the inspiring and spreading of the ‘shines. They were close to a DJ during the timeline under scrutiny. As a nonbinary person, they would have a personal interest in generating and propagating some sort of words to easily communicate pronouns. They might have been far from the ‘original’ nonbinary person we hear of in the Zones (that title might go to El Antagonista or Zero Percent, both members of the First Killjoys), but they are shown to have enough creativity to come up with the terms, and enough sass and charisma to force them into general use.

What could have inspired the terms in-universe is a harder nut to crack. Out-of-universe, the author made a tumblr post talking about how they were inspired by the canon use of “sunshine” and used various astronomy terms to expand on the concept. However, in our world today, connecting the earth to femininity, the stars to masculinity, and the moon or astronomical rings to androgyny is a bit of a stretch. I assume, at least, that (as in our world) pronouns would originally be connected to whatever concepts of gender theory were still floating around after the apocalypse which took place in the late 1990s, even if they concepts became divorced later. Having brainstormed with multiple people on the idea, my best guess is some sort of advertisement campaign connected astronomical terms with gender in the minds of the general populace of Battery City. I am able to extrapolate further, but I will head way too far into the weeds with this, so I’m not going to go there.

So the ‘shines were a contribution to the common slang by the second generation- what did the other generations contribute to ~gender~? The third generation contributed both the combining of various ‘shines to show the use of multiple pronoun sets, alongside the broadening of the term “sunshine.” Whereas before “sunshine” had simply meant “person,” it was shifted to be also used as an identity in the same way the rest of the ‘shines were- “sunshine” became “person who does not have a preference in pronouns used for them” (Messiah, halfway through chapter 3). Before this, the only option for a person without a preference in pronouns, such as Fun Ghoul, was to say “no preference” in response to the unspoken question of someone calling them “sunshine” (Faith, halfway through chapter 4). There was also a de-gendering of “no preference / sunshine;” Fun Ghoul, despite never expressing a preference, is only ever referred to using he/they pronouns. Young Menace of the Defenders crew, on the other hand, is liberally referred to using all three pronoun sets.

I theorize that if the fourth generation of Killjoys had continued in this way, four more terms would have appeared, using “sun” as either a prefix or suffix, meaning “all pronouns, but with a preference on the other half of the word.” For example, sunstar could mean “any pronouns, but with more he and him than anything else.” This is, however, pure speculation on my part, and not to be taken as anything more.

And…Dani would drunk dial Reyes and call him “old man” and then hang up like a ten year old. (There’s twelve years between them) and he’s low-key self-conscious about it. He HATED his 20s and she often reminds him of how he was at 23. It gives him second-hand embarrassment sometimes. Then she’d fill ten bowls with Blasto cereal and down them like shots. Since she’s hammered, she forgot milk.

☆ I feel like they all need a hug, but if narrowing it down, it'll be Vetra. Although each and every single one of them went through their own trauma and issues, she never received a lot of affection growing up outside of her sister giving said affection. Vetra is used to playing the mom of the two and never had the chance to get all the affections she deserves. Drack provides some affection but he's that old man who doesn't know how to properly express affection without headbutting someone or something of the sort.

Vetra and Jaal definitely listens to their gut instinct, given they were raised on the battlefield. Vetra being more in tuned because she was kinda raised in a world of smuggling and stealing shit. So, she has to be careful with who she trusts and where she puts her foot down.

Teresa is a hit or miss. For a more serious situation, she'll listen to her guts, but on a normal day-to-day situation, she may not. She is starting to listen more because she is now a Pathfinder and will be getting herself involved with multiple of people.

I finished the game! 🤗🥳🎉✨

Some important things of note: (SPOILERS, if anybody cares about a 6 year old game 😉)

I ended up taking 120 hours but, let me tell you, that was with me playing as thoroughly as possible. I did every single task, even the ones where you had to find randomly spawning things like datapads. 😐 Fortunately, thanks to some helpful people on Youtube, I learned that several of those tasks could be sped up by controlling load zones (so you find a datapad or whatever, drive away, drive back and voila, hopefully a new one has spawned in! Sometimes you had to actually fast travel or leave the planet and return to get a new spawn, other times that would totally bork things. It was a process of discovery, lol).

I’m not going to play it through like that again, even when I start over as Scott, but it was fun to take the time to really explore on my first “visit” to the world of Andromeda!

Fina-frickin’-ly, lol! The big guy played it close to the vest for a lot longer than I was expecting but, well, our love is now true, official and documented! Something I thought was really hysterical, though? Even after you’ve committed to Jaal, which eliminates the option to flirt with anybody else, I STILL had the flirt option for Drack! So, of course, I had to go ahead and take it, Jaal would just have to understand that Drack is an unstoppable Krogan love machine that NO ONE can resist. 😇😛😉 It was all good, though; Drack let me down easy and Jaal never mentioned it.

Though I did wait until Jaal wasn’t, you know, standing right there. Because I have manners and stuff. *nodnods* 😉

(NOTE: This is a screencap, not a GIF, just so you don’t wonder why it’s not loading, lol) I was SUPER DUPER SAD to learn that I can’t get this look for Scott on his own playthrough. The default face can’t be customized. 😥 ZOMG, I WANT THIS SCRUFFY BEARD LOOK SO VERY MUCH. 😥 I miiiiight see about customizing one of the other faces to look as much like the default face as possible if you can have a scruffy beard. If not, then clean-shaven it will be. *HEAVY SIGH* 😛😉

And speaking of Scott, this actually managed to be something I didn’t know was coming: (SO I’LL MARK THIS WITH ITS OWN SPOILER WARNING, JUST IN CASE) I thought he’d probably wake from his coma by the end of the game but I was FLOORED when I was suddenly playing as Scott and he had a pivotal role in the final fight! 👀 It hit me as hard as an invisible drink, I tell you!

Hee, for some reason, her drink glasses would randomly not appear several times throughout the game, I dunno why. But that’s not as bad as the glitch that I got thankfully only once where THE GROUND did not spawn in and so she got stuck in a cycle of falling to her death, restarting, falling to her death, restarting, falling, restarting, etc. etc. 😱😱😱 That sucked rocks through a straw big time! 😡

I still kinda laugh at the fact that, because I missed that you can customize your brother or sister, I ended up with customized Sara and default Scott as twins, lol! On Scott’s playthrough, I’m going to customize Sara to look like this Sara, though, just ‘cause. 😎 Also, I find it interesting that their dad Alec changes to match your main character, so if I use default Scott, I’ll have default Alec where as Sara’s Alec matched her look instead, lol. Oh well, clearly Original Pathfinder Ryder™ was a man of many talents! 😛

A few other fun things...

This is how Peebee showed up when I changed my loadout, lol. You can see Vetra is following me because she’s my Best Girl™ but Peebs (I love it when she starts signing her emails like that 😉) is just hanging out up there! I finally had to get in the NOMAD and then back out again to get her boots on the ground!

Sara has a radio-like music player at her bedside in the Pathfinder’s quarters and it has my friend THE DANCE PROMPT, YES! (You can’t see it here because I had to shorten the GIF for size limitations. 😕😉) Sara is also modeling both her casual and her sport’s casual looks for y’all as she breaks out her best moves! 😎👍😉

Next, because I’m sure the entire Internet is dying of anticipation to know my next move... 😛😉

Since I’ve learned of my other friend, Manual Save, I kept some points so I can go back and...

...take Peebee up on her friends-with-benefits offer. And back up a bit farther to do the same for Liam after Sara helps him move the couch. 😛

...Vetra, my love. I just freakin’ adore her, what can I say? She was my constant through all of the missions, it was always me, Vetra and somebody else. She’s a total badass but also endearingly a little insecure and with a literal spiky exterior that covers a sweet, caring heart. Nothing but the best full-on romance for my Turian sweetheart! *fist thump* (Can you guess who I already know my fem!Shep will be romancing in the ME trilogy? Three guesses and they’re all spelled Garrus Vakarian... 😂😉)

I still would like to romance Suvi but I get the feeling she’s going to take more work like Jaal did because her flirt options dropped almost immediately as soon as I stopped selecting them. Peebee and Liam, for example, offered flirt options right up until my romance with Jaal locked in, even though I hadn’t selected one for a while. So there’s that to consider.

For Scott, he’ll definitely be romancing Avela because, as we all may recall...

Also, it’s a short-lived romance so he can probably find time to also romance somebody else in that one playthrough, if I’m feeling it. (I honestly was surprised at how much I ended up loving Gil, so maybe we’ll give that a try, either here or elsewhere?)

But, of course, the full-on romance for Scott is going to be...

Cora. I legit went *SQUEE* out loud when she kept asking about or mentioning Scott to Sara. *furiously waves Scott/Cora shipper flag* It made me feel kinda like she might’ve had a wee little bit of a crush on her Pathfinder’s son (when Alec was her Pathfinder, of course) but she was keeping it professional and all that. I dunno, that might just be me and those darn shipper glasses that tend to fly out of nowhere and land on my face all the time...

Also, somebody at some point will be romancing Reyes because, and please pardon my language, but he’s the epitome of a sexy mofo. 😳😛😂

You also get a glimpse that there’s more to him than meets the eye. The only thing I was disappointed in was that, while I intended to choose him over Sloane, I REALLY disliked that the only way to do that was to promise Sloane you’d have her back and would keep things fair... then you let Reyes assassinate her via a sniper shot. But if you save her, you’re choosing her to “rule” Kadara instead of Reyes. *frustrated sigh* I let her get assassinated but I felt bad about it. Not about my choice but just at how it came about. (Cora also called me out on that later, to not forget that he’d had an unarmed woman killed after promising her a fair fight... 😬😥)

In conclusion of my long-winded rambling, I loved this game a LOT. Was it perfect? Was the animation sometimes WAY WONKY? No and yes. But I was here for the chance for some romance and RPG along with my combat and I really enjoyed that aspect a bunch! I’m sorry that they won’t be continuing Andromeda’s story because I would’ve liked to see more of the Tempest and her crew. As it is, though, I’ll just be content believing they’re out there saving the universe and having more adventures!

I’ll eventually be moving to the OG trilogy and I’m definitely looking forward to that! But for now, thank you, Mass Effect: Andromeda, for 120 hours of fun game time and here’s to many more!

What the fuck, how is the year over? I'm finally home after an extended visit with family over the holidays on account of the whole blizzard thing - a whopping 13(?) days of sleeping on the couch and eating Christmas candy and not knowing what day it was - and now you're trying to tell me that it's 2023?? Things I'm Currently Reading (Heading into 2023)

Well, shoot. I made a whole little list for myself in my notebook. Titled it "To Read Before End of Year" and everything. And yet (and yet, and yet).

So I guess heading into 2023, I have 9 WIPs I'm following that I need to catch up on. I started both Chosen by 5moreminutes and Disappearances by @batmansymbol this year (one as part of a group read and the other listening along to live recordings). Life happened and I never finished either, so they are top of my list for 2023. We had also started Contradictions as a group read before life rudely got in the way there, too. Never fear, @ambpersand my love, my horny deranged screams are coming for you this year!!

Really was not expecting to have such an intensely real and relatable moment in Andromeda, but Drack talking about his pain was something else. As someone who dealt with chronic pain for years, what he said all too real and all too familiar. I really appreciate that the devs included this moment.
