ufc-releases-tuf-winner-after-brutal-4-year-skid--end-of-the-road
The UFC’s various entry points offer us a look at fighters who could be future champions. Unfortunately, the excitement of shows like Dana White’s Contender Series and The Ultimate Fighter also generates their share of busts. Warlley Alves, the winner of TUF Season 3 in May 2014, might fall somewhere in the middle. The 34-year-oldRead More

I Want Slow Internet
Tumblr media
Wired had a great post about the “slow web” or Artisanal Internet. The idea is to embrace independent, decentralized technology, the way the slow food movement embraces locally produced, traditionally-prepared foods. It’s an interesting idea but I’m guessing not one most people are ready to embrace. Heck, I wasn’t even sure it would be 100% my jam. My biggest concern is that in this analogy, Facebook is McDonald’s, and, like McDonald’s, is probably never going away. Both are unhealthy and addictive, and very hard for most people to quit. I’ve been off Facebook for about 5 years now and left Instagram maybe 2 years ago (although I didn’t shut down my account). But most of my friends still use both of those platforms. (And I do mean my real friends — I have no idea what the randos I barely knew in high school are up to now that I’ve left.)
Big Internet keeps coming up with new ways to hook us. My kids have started to use Snapchat and one of them got backdoor-trapped into the social network known as Fortnite. Policing these really does seem a lot like policing my kids’ diet. We’ve taken the moderation and education approach for the most part and it seems to be working. But then I suppose they’ll just have their whole lives to battle how much they use social applications — like we’ve all had to manage how much Ben and Jerry’s is acceptable.  The good news is that there are plenty of artisanal web apps out there. I like think The Old Reader is one. That is, apps that help you learn, connect, or get things done without spying on you or manipulating what you see for their profit. But start calling them Artisanal Web Apps at your own risk... I have a feeling you might get slapped in the face if too many people hear you talking like that. Just like farmer’s markets haven’t wiped out fast food, the slow web is probably never going to take down Facebook or displace Google. The issue is that there is no alternative to an advertising-driven business model that really works. But if developers can learn to live without venture capitalists, without trying to grow exponentially, and offer a safer, less polluted Internet, we can get along just fine.

Common Sayings With Historical Origins
Tumblr media
Here are some of the more unusual origin stories behind everyday phrases, curated by the Oldreads review team.
Turn a blind eye
Referred to as a refusal to acknowledge a particular reality, this phrase dates back to British naval hero Horatio Nelson during 1801’s Battle of Copenhagen. In this battle, Nelson’s ships were pitted against a large Danish-Norwegian fleet and when his superior officer flagged for him to withdraw, Nelson supposedly brought his telescope to his bad eye and blithely proclaimed, “I really do not see the signal,” and for this reason the phrase “turn a blind eye” persists to this day.
Tumblr media
Crocodile tears
This phrase is used to describe a display of superficial sadness, and is believed to derive from crocodiles who apparently shed tears of sadness while they kill and consume their prey.
Tumblr media
Diehard
This phrase refers to someone with a strong dedication to a set of beliefs and is believed to stem from the 1700s to describe condemned men who struggled the longest when they were executed by hanging.

Books I prefer without the dust jacket.
Fairy Oak is a series by an Italian writer named Elisabetta Gnone, this series tells the story of two twin witches - Lavender and Vanilla Periwinkle - living in the town called Fairy Oak. I remember loving these books back when I was around 14, and it’s crazy to think I read these a decade ago.
I’m in the middle of moving and I wanted to take a photo of them before packing them away.

Books My 11-Year-Old Likes to Read
Tumblr media
If you are like me, your 11-year-old boy doesn't like to read anything. It is a super struggle to find books that he enjoys reading. This had been a hard age for us. While my son isn't interested in the teen books in his reading level. The books that sound interesting are meant for a younger age. If it wasn't for the schools reading requirements I don't think I would ever get him to read a book for enjoyment.
Stranded
Tumblr media
A new blended family of four kids becomes shipwreck alone on an island. No adults, nobody to turn to but themselves. It started out as a nice to be a family vacation but now they have to work together to get off the island alive. My son devoured these books. He was staying up late sneaking in his reading past bedtime. This is the first time he has ever done this. I thought now your acting like me! There are 6 books in this series. Stranded series Stranded (Book 1) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMTrial By Fire (Book 2) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMSurvivors (Book 3) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMShadow Island series Forbidden Passage (Book 4) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMSabotage (Book 5) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMDesperate Measures (Book 6) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAM
Cog
Tumblr media
Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAM Cog (short for cognitive development) is a learning boy/robot. Gina is the scientist who made Cog and is caring for and teaching him how to be independent. After an accident leaves him in an unknown lab with the scientist that wants to study him. Cog recruits fellow robot friends to help him escape and find his way back to Gina. We liked this book, it has robots and dogs two of his favorite things. This is a funny adventure sci-fi. It was a super quick read for my son. I am always a good sign when he comes to me and reads me the funny parts of the book. Voyage of the Dogs is another book he enjoyed by Greg Van Eekout
Trapped in a Video Game
Tumblr media
Jesse Rigsby dropped into the video game Full Blast with his friend Eric. It not bad enough that they have to figure out how to survive the video game itself, but figuring out how to get out. To make matter worse there are robot assailants after them too. This book is self-published, which makes my heart happy. He liked Trapped in a Video Game. It is action-packed and very funny. But he didn't love it like the other books above. I think he chose this book for the computer programming aspect more than the story. It wasn't a favorite but he read it to the end to that makes me happy. Trapped in a Video Game Series Trapped in a Video Game (Book 1) / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMTrapped in a Video Game (Book 2): The Invisible Invasion / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMTrapped in a Video Game (Book 3): Robots Revolt / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMTrapped in a Video Game (Book 4): Return to Doom Island / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAMTrapped in a Video Game (Book 5): The Final Boss / Kindle / B&N / Nook / Kabo / Bookshop / BAM If you have a younger son check out my post 5 Books Your 8-year-old Will Actually Read What are books your son likes comment below, give me some ideas!! It’s Getting Dark This Halloween
Tumblr media
Halloween is the one holiday that’s best celebrated in the dark. Which is why The Old Reader is excited to be able to introduce the all-new Dark Mode. It’s time to embrace the dark side of reading on the web.
Okay, Dark Mode really has nothing to do with Halloween, but this seems like the perfect time to introduce it to everyone. It is all about readability, reducing eye strain, and making your experience using The Old Reader better.
Dark Mode was one of the most commonly requested features we’ve had from our users and there is even a user-created plugin that does a similar thing. With this new, built-in feature, all you have to do to use it is hit the “d” key while using The Old Reader, and voilà, you’re in Dark Mode.
Tumblr media
Dark Mode is just one small way we want to keep The Old Reader moving forward. Give it a try, we think you'll really like it. Thanks again for all the great feedback and happy darkmoding!

Find Me
BTW, I’m not going anywhere. I mean I didn’t delete my LJ until like last year, so I’m not a drastic ship-jumper here. I’ll be hanging out on tumblr until it’s dying days, most likely.
BUT. If you’re going elsewhere and wanna find me, I am very publicly findable and I like it that way so feel free to give this information to anyone or link it wherever for easy access.
I’m sophygurl on tumblr (which I use the most), twitter (which I use a little), and dreamwidth (which I rarely use). If I join other social media sites and it’s not already taken, I’ll probably be sophygurl there, too. I’m also sophygurl at yahoo, which is the only email I ever use.
I’m my real name on FB, which you can find by going to my twitter because it’s right there as my name (lol I like being public about myself what can I say?), or by asking me in a private message.
If I can get away with using my FB or twitter account to access a site without creating a whole new account, I generally do that so you can find me on sites like goodreads that way, though I don’t often use them.
On youtube, for some reason, I’m linked up via my google account which I only have for a few specific reasons. I’m philosophygurl there, but don’t send me email at that address - I will never ever see it.
I have an oldreader account for blog reading, so if you have a non-tumblr/DW blog, lemme know and I can add it there - but truth is I don’t log in and read blogs all that often.
I’ve been thinking I should make an AO3 account - I’m not a content creator, and I don’t read fic, but I know a lot of ppl store their vids there and I keep thinking I should get an account for watching/commenting/curating purposes.
What else? Oh yea, if you’re a Big Brother fan, you can probably find me simply as sophb on certain BB fan sites and chatrooms lol.
