Eurovision Fact #795:
Tumblr media
Kalush Orchestra is named after the city of Kalush, Ukraine not only as a sort of mascot for the band's brand of rap and folk music, but because it is the hometown of band member Oleh Psiuk.

**Some sites list Tymofii's birthday as being in September, however his actual Ukrainian Wikipedia page shows it as February 6th, so that's what I'm going with
***Claveau's Google profile and Wikipedia page listed his birthday as 17th December for ages, which is what I used. However his Wikipedia page now lists 29th December, changing him from Sagittarius to Capricorn. His French Wikipedia page also gives 29th December as his birthday, and who I am to doubt the French when it comes to their own countryman?
Corrections/additional information welcome!

Kalush is the hometown of Kalush Orchestra’s frontman Oleh Psiuk. It’s located in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast (province) about 90 km SSE of the city of L’viv.
In the video above, several residents express how proud and delighted they were that Oleh and his bandmates won Eurovision 2022.
We actually get to hear regular Ukrainians speaking casually in this vid. You get a better sense of how Ukrainian sounds different than Russian.

Daily Wrap Up May 15, 2022
Under the cut: Russian forces fire at the hospital in Severodonetsk, Ukraine; Finland, backed by and followed by Sweden, will seek NATO membership; Ukrainian Eurovision winning group Kalush Orchestra will auction off their trophy and donate the funds to the military; UK Ministry of Defence estimates that Russia may have lost a third of the ground forces they deployed.
“Russian forces fired at the hospital in Severodonetsk on Sunday, Serhii Haidai, the head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, posted to his official Telegram channel.
Nine civilians were injured and received medical treatment at the hospital, which continued to operate during shelling, he said.
“Over the past day, the orcs (a derogatory Ukrainian term for Russian troops) carried out 11 artillery attacks on Severodonetsk,” he added.
The Russians “shelled houses, a chemical plant, a school and a hospital,” he said.”-via CNN

“Finland’s government declared a “new era” is underway as it inches closer to seeking NATO membership, hours before Sweden’s governing party on Sunday backed a plan to join the trans-Atlantic alliance amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Russia has long bristled about NATO moving closer to its borders, so the developments will be sure to further anger Moscow. President Vladimir Putin has already warned his Finnish counterpart on Saturday that relations would be “negatively affected.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Sunday the process for Finland and Sweden to join could be very quick. He also didn’t expect Turkey to hold up the process.
Speaking after top diplomats from the alliance’s 30 member states met in Berlin, Stoltenberg also expressed his hope that Ukraine could win the war as Russian military advances appear to be faltering.
In Finland, President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin confirmed earlier statements that their country would seek membership in NATO during a joint news conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki. The Nordic country, which was nonaligned before changing its stance on NATO, shares a long border with Russia.”-via AP

“Kalush Orchestra, the band that won Eurovision for Ukraine last night, will auction off the statuette and donate the proceeds to a charity fund that helps the Ukrainian army and Ukraine.
“Many people are already donating from abroad, and perhaps many more would like to donate. And this, in our opinion, will be the thing that motivates them. We think it will be beneficial for Ukraine,” band leader Oleh Psiuk said.”-via The Guardian

Taylor Swift wins most prizes at MTV Europe Music Awards
Tumblr media
At the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday, Taylor Swift won four awards, including best video for her ten-minute song "All Too Well."
Nicki Minaj won twice, for best song and best hip-hop, and David Guetta, a French DJ and music producer, won twice for best electronic and best collaboration.
Musicians from Brazil to South Korea were honoured at the event, which was broadcast on MTV from Düsseldorf in western Germany.
It included a performance of "Stefania" by Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra, the winner of this year's Eurovision Song Contest, in a venue lit up in the country's blue and yellow colours.
Swift, a pop singer from the United States, won best artist, best pop, best video, and best long form video.
"I felt like I learned so much about how making film can be a natural extension of my storytelling," Swift said as she accepted the long form video award.
Swift references 1970s Hollywood in "All Too Well," which describes a crumbling romantic connection that leaves little but a scarf and memories in its wake.
"It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well", Swift sings.
Minaj's winning song "Super Freaky Girl" incorporates the 1981 hit "Super Freak" with lyrics "I can lick it, I can ride it while you slippin' and slidin'".
Lalisa "Lisa" Manoban, a Thai-born singer, won best K-pop, while British pop sensation Harry Styles took first place in the "best live" category. The K-pop phenomenon from South Korea, BTS, took first place in the biggest fans category.
British pop artist Rita Ora and movie director Taika Waititi, who were married this year, served as the show's hosts. For "best look," Ora was the winner.
Before the event was broadcast from the PSD Bank Dome, screaming teenagers watched the celebrities walk down a red carpet.
The son of John Lennon of the Beatles, Julian Lennon, announced his arrival by remarking that he had not attended a performance in a long time and was looking forward to it.
Muse, the winning rock band, said it will dedicate its victory to the people of Iran and Ukraine.
Oleh Psiuk, the frontman of Kalush Orchestra, expressed his desire that more Ukrainian bands should perform at the festival the next year.

As a Eurovision fan, I couldn’t let my Takeru Hat-A-Day project go without Eurovision-themed hats. Somehow, both hats I drew rep Ukrainian entries! From May 14th, it’s Verka Serduchka’s iconic silver star cap, and from May 15th, it’s Kalush Orchestra’s Oleh Psiuk’s absolutely delightful hot pink bucket hat.

Season Finale “Spotify: Mic Check”: Ukrainian Rapper Oleh Psiuk
Music isn’t simply an entertainment medium. It also has the ability to inspire, motivate and energize.
In perhaps no other nation in the world can music play such a pivotal role as in Ukraine. Under attack by Russia, an authoritarian regime with visions of resurrecting its empire, the nation is fortunate to have Ukrainian rapper and frontman of Kalush Orchestra Oleh Psiuk. The band’s sound mixes old Ukrainian folklore with contemporary hip-hop.
Spotify has just released the final episode of the year in its original podcast series, Spotify: Mic Check. — a series aimed at connecting fans with the world’s biggest creators from around the globe through exclusively intimate conversations.
Tumblr media
Fresh off their 2022 Eurovision Song contest win for the Ukrainian power anthem “Stefania,” Kalush Orchestra frontman Oleh Psiuk sits down with Spotify: Mic Check for an intimate conversation on winning Eurovision, returning to his home country during the Russian invasion, giving back to his country and receiving support from President Zelenskyy amidst a tumultuous time.
Earlier this year, Spotify pledged its support for Ukraine by rebranding its Music of Ukraine playlist as UNITED24: Music For Ukraine, featuring a special video message from President Zelenskyy. The playlist also includes a donation link within the app to support the organization UNITED24 — a global initiative to support Ukraine that was launched by President Zelenskyy.
For more information on Spotify’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, you can check out Spotify’s For The Record blog.
Available to stream for free exclusively on Spotify, please see below for interview highlights in the episode.
Oleh Psiuk on coming home from winning Eurovision and experiencing the Russian invasion.
“The day the war began, we were returning from the city of Dnipro to Kyiv. We were on tour and had performed earlier that night. We were driving through Boryspil, and we were there. We heard the explosions. It was also on the news. It was five in the morning. We understood our influence as musicians, and we’ve tried to be useful in that respect.”
Oleh Psiuk on receiving support from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyyadmidst the Eurovision Song Contest and impending war with Russia.
“On the eve of Eurovision, our President Zelenskyy made a video where he said, “guys, come on and show your best at Eurovision.” And I realized that the president during the war shot a video directed at me. I think it’s very important. Actually, Eurovision has always meant a lot to Ukrainians, but during the war it was followed even by Ukrainians who didn’t know about our band, maybe, and didn’t know about Eurovision. But it was important to everyone how we would represent our country this year.”
Oleh Psiuk on returning to Ukraine and uniting his country after winning Eurovision.
“It has been and will always be important. And when we returned to Ukraine a few days after the victory, we really noticed that we managed to actually raise the spirits of Ukrainians. We were met by people abroad, at the border in Lviv, at numerous locations, and they just gathered together there and sang with us, and I saw how it was important for people.”
Oleh Psiuk on Kalush Orchestra giving back to their country financially after Eurovision.
“After Eurovision, we thought “what else could we do to help Ukraine?” and realized that this was a newsbreak, and we had a real chance to make a big deal with the trophy. That’s how it happened. We sold it for nine hundred thousand dollars, and we also sold my Eurovision bucket hat for eleven million hryvnia. It turned out to be a kind of double contribution, and we’re happy that we managed to help our country this way.”
You can listen to Spotify: Mic Check here.
