George Gascón is in for the fight of his political life. The Los Angeles District Attorney is facing a recall because he wants to reform the justice system in his county. He’s working to end life sentences without the hope of parole and trying juveniles in adult court among other reforms. Calling them failed policies of the past, he blames politicians who seek to win elections by invoking fear. As a former politician who faced opposition from stakeholders when I suggested similar reforms in the 1980s, I have an inkling about the vitriol headed his way. Data to support his approach is abundant. Severe punishment doesn’t reduce crime. Strange as it may seem, when the justice system is the primary way to address criminal behavior, largely, the result is failure. Even so, the old arguments for harsh punishment persist with the media’s help. Fear captures eyeballs. The public trembles. A hardliner calls out, “What about the victims?” People nod and forget that when the justice system fails, society is the victim. We waste money building jails we can’t fill. In my state, they had stood empty for years. One enterprising judge suggested we send teenagers who loiter in malls to prison to fill up the space. The idea was a breathtaking abuse of justice, but no one seemed shocked. As long as people don’t know the facts behind what drives crime or don’t care, If they are more interested in scratching a vengeful itch, they will continue to pay outrageously for the satisfaction. Ignorance is expensive but it can also be deadly. Take for example the Russian soldiers who invaded Ukraine and surrounded Chernobyl. Immediately, they fixed their perimeter by digging trenches. What were they afraid of? Ghosts? A nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 has left the area uninhabitable to humans for the next 3,000 years. Snapfont

Snapfont is a browser extension that lets you test any font on any website in a snap. You can preview differences in body and headline fonts to get a feel for how a website would look or function with different type families. Fake Out

Programmer Ali Aliev — the fake Elon Musk in the video above — took advantage of open source code from software called First Order Motion, a face-swapping program that was developed by a team of Italian researchers as well as Snap Inc., according to Motherboard.

“Developing a prototype was a matter of a couple of hours and I decided to make fun of my colleagues with whom I have a Zoom call each Monday,” Aliev told Motherboard. And that worked. As they are all engineers and researchers, the first reaction was curiosity and we soon began testing the prototype.”

Live Stream with Guests Using OBS with Skype and NDI

As a technical content streamer, one of the most difficult tasks for me to accomplish was with having guests participate on the stream. To be clear, I don’t mean having guests participate in the chat, I mean having them on the stream with their video, audio, and sometimes screen.

Think about it. You’re streaming to Twitch or another platform using Open Broadcast Studio (OBS). You’re probably streaming your video and audio, but what happens if you need to include a guest? Do you do a Zoom meeting and screen-grab their video using OBS? If you’re capturing the guest video, how do you pipe their audio? What happens if they need to share their screen as well?

This can turn into a complicated mess.

In this tutorial we’re going to see how to have guests on your stream without a bunch of complicated hacks. We’re going to see how to use a network device interface (NDI) with Skype for easy inclusion into Open Broadcast Studio.

Network Device Interfaces (NDI) with Open Broadcast Studio (OBS)

While capturing part of a screen and redirecting speaker output in OBS works, it is inconvenient and becomes more troublesome when you need to manage multiple guests and potentially their screens.

Instead, a company named NewTek created software that allows network devices to be treated as video sources. This is what they’re calling network device interfaces (NDI). Think IP cameras that record video, but aren’t physically connected to a computer like a web camera.

Open Broadcast Studio (OBS) can add NDI sources with minimal effort if the following is available on your computer:

The OBS NDI Extension

Both the runtime and the extension can be downloaded for free from GitHub.

After installing both, you can load Open Broadcast Studio and you should be able to find NDI Source as a source option for your scene.

When it comes to the streaming world, the most common use-case for NDI with OBS is to transfer video from a gaming computer to a streaming computer on the network to prevent the gaming computer from having to waste CPU and GPU resources for transcoding audio and video, then uploading it.

If you wanted this functionality, you can configure OBS to be an output source.

To configure OBS as an output source, choose Tools then NDI Output Settings from the menu bar from within OBS.

Using OBS as an output for video on the network is useful, but won’t get you very far when it comes to having guests participate in your Twitch streams. This is because NDI doesn’t work too well with sources outside of the local network.

This is where Skype comes into play.

Skype for Creators and NDI Support for Guest Feeds

Skype is a great video chat and video conferencing tool. It offers high quality video calling and screen sharing between participants on the call, similar to solutions like Zoom and WebEx.

What’s particularly nice about Skype is that it offers NDI functionality, if enabled.

This means that the the host can treat each video on the call as a separate and localize NDI source. With each participant on the call as a separate NDI source, each can be easily added to OBS without any hacks.

Within Skype, go to Preferences, then Calling, and then Advanced.

You’re going to want to enable the Allow NDI Usage toggle. When in a call with participants, they will likely see a message within the call that you may be recording them since you’ve enabled NDI.

When a Skype call is taking place, check the NDI Source within OBS and each of the tracks should be available as options. These options will be unavailable when there is no call happening.

Some things to note:

The screen sharing track has audio as well as video.

Skype changes the NDI source resolution based on the transfer quality.

Both are easy to fix if necessary.

When it comes to the screen sharing track, if you don’t need the audio, just disable it after adding the source. A reason you might want to disable it is if you’re adding both the video and screen of the same call participant. The audio from the same person’s video and screen may produce an echo otherwise.

The feed resolution changes are annoying, but also easily fixable.

Right click on the NDI Source and choose Transform.

You’ll want to change the Bounding Box Type to Scale to Inner Bounds. After making this change you won’t have to worry about the feed changing sizes throughout your stream. You can learn more about this in the Skype FAQ.

Conclusion

You just saw an option for including guests in your Twitch, Mixer, or similar streams, without jumping through hoops when it comes to video and audio for your participants. Making use of the NDI functionality that Open Broadcast Studio (OBS) and Skype offers is a huge convenience for capturing video and audio feeds from remote participants.

While I haven’t tried it, Wirecast should have NDI functionality, which makes it an alternative to OBS.

Why we went from Slack to Discord

The beginning of 2020 was one of the most difficult moments of the last decade. The rapid spread of SARS-COVID-2 and the consequent quarantine imposed by the various countries of the world has led many companies to discover and approach remote work for the first time, in order to protect their employees while still being able to work without attending the office. However, choosing the right tools to support remote collaboration is almost as difficult a challenge as adopting "smart" working methodologies that allow you to keep productivity high. The panorama of available choices is vast, from open-source tools such as Jitsi and Nextcloud to commercial services such as Slack and Google GSuite, each with its own strengths and peculiarities.

At Mikamai we have always been used to working in a "smart" way, preferring asynchronous and written collaboration wherever possible to make our business more streamlined and agile. This allows us to expand our operational area to the entire world, both in terms of customers and collaborators. In fact, many colleagues do not work from our main office in Milan, Italy, but from more comfortable places for them, such as other Italian or European cities, even other continents. We have long been GSuite users for shared documents, GitHub for hosting our projects, Trello for managing activities and Slack for internal communication.

However, we recently started to feel the limitations of Slack’s free plan. Mikamai has grown, the number of people and messages written every day has grown significantly with it, and we have found ourselves to frequently exceed the limit of 10,000 messages, thus losing potentially important conversations and messages. The lack of group video calls forces us to use Google Meet, an excellent video conferencing solution but which lacks the immediacy of starting a call directly from the text chat. However, paid plans, the price of which increases for each employee present in the workspace, are not very appealing to us. So we started scouting for a tool that would better meet our needs.

In the past few months we have tried several online communication tools, in particular Mattermost, an open source alternative to Slack, JetBrains Space, a collaboration and management service that includes a chat very similar to Slack, and Discord, a communication platform designed for gamers and online communities, but with very interesting features also for companies that work in a distributed way.

The latter has caught our attention, and here are the reasons that led us to adopt it as our corporate communication tool.

Voice chat is only one click away

Despite working mainly in an asynchronous way through email, Trello cards and comments on the code repositories, direct conversation is a very important tool especially for creative activities that benefit from a rapid and continuous exchange of ideas between the participants. The ability of immediately entering a group voice chat, with excellent audio quality and with the support of text chat and screen sharing is perhaps Discord's main strength, and what really convinced us in attempting the transition.

Brainstorming and planning sessions can be started quickly without the overhead that changing tools entails when using services outside the chat, as was our case with Google Meet. Everything is much more natural and immediate, promoting communication and the exchange of ideas rather than discouraging them.

It is also very convenient for organizing virtual coffee breaks, allowing you to maintain human contact with colleagues that you risk losing by working remotely.

Granular control over roles and permissions

Discord was created to host online communities, mainly in the gaming world but extending over time to all those groups of users who need a safe digital space in which to meet and chat. For this reason, the platform provides a wide range of permissions, which can be grouped into roles to be assigned to users, allowing you to granularly control which actions are granted to which users, and in which channels. In our particular case we do not manage a public space but a private server, however it is not used solely for business purposes. We have dedicated some channels to external activities, like video games or role-playing games, which involve the presence of users who are not part of the company staff, such as family members and playmates, former colleagues and partners of other companies. Thanks to Discord's powerful permission system, these users have access only to the channels for which they were authorized, while the company's internal chats are hidden and inaccessible.

This also allows us to invite our customers to join the server to facilitate the exchange of information with them. For each project, a text channel and a corresponding voice room is created, along with a role that allows access to them. When the customer enters the server and is assigned the role, he can then access these channels and actively collaborate with us, without being able to see reserved areas and spaces dedicated to other active projects.

We have also created a dedicated announcement channel, in which only Mikamai's administrative staff can write, to support the internal mailing list in quickly sharing official news and communications with colleagues.

External integrations

Slack boasts a multitude of integrations with third-party systems, from ticketing and project management platforms to infrastructure alarms and monitoring systems. Discord does not have the same spread in the business and development world, but provides the possibility to configure the integrations in a Slack compatible mode, basically allowing to integrate any system that can interact with Slack. Discord also has a robust and diverse chatbot ecosystem, small applications that act like automatic users and increase native chat features. For example, a very successful bot in Mikamai’s server is Groovy, a bot that allows you to play music to all users connected to a voice channel as a kind of virtual jukebox. Thanks to it, we can share our music with colleagues, allowing everyone to add songs to the playlist being played.

Cost

Obviously one aspect that we have not underestimated during our evaluation is the monetary cost compared to the competition. All of Discord’s core features are completely free, providing paid additions mainly aimed at the gaming world, especially streamers and youtubers, such as the ability to add custom emojis, customize the profile and improve audio and video quality. This, added to the points previously discussed, was one of the key points for Mikamai in making the decision to migrate to Discord.

Given that I’m not a very techy person, which often limits me in discovering the full potential of this type of tool, I must say that I find Discord very versatile. I really appreciate the possibility of enabling audio channels that allow an immediate switch between text communication and voice communication (especially group chats). Having an unlimited number of messages always available free of charge is, of course, another nice advantage.

I have been using Discord for more than a year mainly for gaming but also to talk or see my friends. I immediately found it intuitive and with a youthful graphic feeling. Its strength is absolutely being free, I still remember when I had to communicate with other players simultaneously, we used TeamSpeak and it required us to spend a lot of money every month for a dedicated server, with an increasing cost based on the amount of users who could connect at once, a real nightmare. With Slack, I suffered (and still suffer) because of the limited chat history, 10,000 messages or a month of history and then that’s it. How many lost links, how many chats that have fallen by the wayside ("I wrote it to you on Slack", "When ???")... Discord is, in my opinion, the tool par excellence of remote communication both for gaming, chatting and companies.

Conclusions

Discord has proved to be an excellent corporate communication platform despite being mainly geared towards the world of gaming and digital communities. The speed with which it is possible to start talking with colleagues and organize virtual meetings has allowed us to facilitate the transition even for those who were not previously used to working completely remotely, and has given us back a part of the warmth that sharing the day with our coworkers transmit, reducing the alienation due to the emergency situation in which we find ourselves. We will have the opportunity to test it thoroughly in the coming months, but we are sure that it will prove itself to be a valid and central tool for our daily work.

Wrangling Communication Apps with Rambox Community Edition (Free and Available for Windows, Mac and Linux.)

Occasionally, I’ll hear someone mention how difficult it is to manage the dozens of communication and productivity apps many of us use daily.

These include apps for email, project management, chat, social media, voice and video conferencing, time tracking, to-do lists, and more.

It’s difficult to manage so many open tabs in my browser between webmail, chat, and project management apps. I wind up missing important information or alerts!

Focusing on desktop computers or laptops, where we get most of our work done, here is a list of some services I use, either with their native desktop app, or in a web browser:

Daily:

Microsoft Outlook (email)

Slack (chat/conference)

Wrike (project management)

Zoom (conference/chat)

Microsoft Teams (chat/conference)

Workflowy (outlines within outlines)

Habitica (personal task/habit management)

Google Drive apps (Docs, Sheets, etc)

Feedly (RSS feed reader)

TweetDeck (social media account aggregator)

Google Hangouts (chat/conference)

Discord (chat/conference)

Facebook Messenger (chat)

Trello (list/task management)

Todoist (list/task management)

Less often:

Hootsuite (social media account aggregator)

Skype (conference/chat)

ProtonMail (e2e encrypted email)

Wire (e2e encrypted chat)

Some of these apps need to stay running nearly 100% of the workday to avoid missing any important or not-so-important notifications (managing notifications with wearables will be another story).

For me, this includes Outlook, Slack, and Wrike, though I’ll typically have Habitica open so I can quickly add or check completed tasks, and Hangouts so I don’t have to reach to unlock my phone if a family member messages me.

One of the problems with using the web app version of these, most of which are identical to the desktop apps, as most of them are simply web pages wrapped in a desktop app wrapper, is that we are always opening and closing tabs, groups of tabs, or exiting the browser completely. Some web apps have separate browser plugins that can be installed so even if the app’s tab is closed, desktop notification popups and sounds will persist, though this also requires the browser be configured to continue running as a background service even when the browser is exited. Personally, I disable the background service option to save system resources, because I often test websites in multiple browsers, each requiring a giant memory footprint.

Each new browser tab takes up more system resources. Sometimes I have a large number of tabs open for the same app, like Wrike, which is a memory and cpu hog, causing the performance of all apps to suffer.

This is where Rambox comes in, a free and open source “workspace browser”, where multiple web apps may be contained in single permanent tabs, wrapped into a single desktop app. There are other similar apps like Stack (Mac only), Shift (pricey), and others not worth mentioning which may be free, but their development has stagnated. Rambox gets regular updates and features, and they support their free open source version (FOSS) with a “pro” paid version that includes some additional features, a slicker interface design, and a larger list of supported services. I did not find any real advantage during my recent trial of the pro version aside from its addition of tab groups, where one group could be for work and another for personal.

There aren’t any secret tricks to adding and configuring app tabs within Rambox, so I won’t go through that.

For fun, here’s a list of all the apps the free version of Rambox supports, about 100. The pro version supports over 600, but give me a break. The free version also supports “_Custom Service”, the last option. This is how I’ve added Habitica, Feedly, Trello, and others, by simply adding the link to their respective web apps into the Custom Service settings. It opens the page, asks for your user/pass just like the respective service’s website would, and you’re in.

Some useful global Rambox features:

Auto-run on startup whenever you reboot.

Set a master password on startup.

Set a password to lock access while Rambox is still running (can be same as master).

Change the location of the tab bar to top, left, bottom, or right.

Global toggle for “Don’t Disturb” to block popup and audio notifications for all apps.

External links clicked within Rambox from apps like Outlook, Wrike, Basecamp, Hangouts, etc, will open in your default browser.

Some Rambox tips:

Apps can be toggled on and off from the checkboxes on the main windows. Apps that are only used occasionally can be left off until you need them.

Toggle off work related apps on the weekend and toggle off overly annoying personal apps during the workday!

Use the zoom in/out features to keep each individual app locked at the font size and overall size you prefer.

SSO and 2FA logins using Duo Mobile have never been a problem.

Web apps that you might have installed additional browser plugins for to make them easier to interact with, like the Feedly board/bookmarks plugin or Pocket bookmarks will work best in your browser since Rambox doesn’t support browser plugins.

Social network aggregation apps like Tweetdeck or Hootsuite may be important to have running front and center during events or for general social network monitoring, and Rambox does work great with those, but I opt to keep them disabled or not add them to avoid distractions.

There may be one trick to adding some custom apps. Apps that use your Google account or other social accounts to authenticate may trigger popups that won’t work correctly. In these instances, most services can have a password added, using the same email or username, separate from the Google or social sign-in.

And Slack...

Currently, I don’t use Slack with Rambox. I use the Slack desktop app.

Only the desktop app supports multiple simultaneous workspaces that can be toggled from a list of icons on the left sidebar. This allows me to simultaneously receive messages and notifications from my coworkers, IT Service’s workspace, and several other workspaces. The web app only supports one at a time where switching to one workspace hides all the others. I also had an issue once with a Slack video chat popup that seemed to disappear while still producing audio, but that was a long time ago. Feel free to give it a try if you only use one workspace. You can also add individual Slack workspaces to their own Rambox tabs, but that tends to eat up memory, and defeats one of Rambox’s RAM saving purposes!

Atlassian sells Jitsi, an open-source videoconferencing tool it acquired in 2015, to 8×8

After announcing earlier this year that it planned to shut down HipChat and Stride and sell the IP of both to Slack, today enterprise software company Atlassian made another move related to its retreat from enterprise chat. It is selling Jitsi, a popular open-source chat and videoconferencing tool, to 8X8, a provider of cloud-based business phone and internal communications services. 8X8 says it plans to integrate Jitsi with its current conferencing solutions, specifically a product called 8X8 Meetings, and to keep it open source.

Terms of this latest sale to 8×8 have not been disclosed. Both the tech and the engineering team working on Jitsi, led by Emil Ivov, are coming with the acquisition.

Atlassian originally acquired Jitsi and its owner BlueJimp for an undisclosed sum in 2015 with the intention of adding video communications to HipChat, and later Stride (which launched in 2017).

But now those two products are headed for the graveyard — they are both being discontinued on February 15, 2019 — and that made Jitsi less core to Atlassian’s new direction, where it is focusing less on enterprise chat, and more on tools for developers and customer care, including Jira, Trello, and Bitbucket (a competitor to GitHub).

The deal is one of the final moves for Atlassian as it focuses more on its business building and operating productivity tools that are not direct competitors in the crowded field of enterprise chat applications. It seems that in any case, Jitsi is hoping for more investment under its new owner.

“This is a great thing and will only help to keep Jitsi’s momentum with renewed investment,” writes Ivov in a blog post announcing the news. “The Jitsi team will remain 100 percent intact and will continue to be an independent group. Operationally things will work much the same way as they did under Atlassian. Jitsi users and developers won’t see any impact, though we do expect with continued funding and support you will see even more new features and capabilities from the project!”

Technology in the acquisition includes Jitsi’s modular open-source projects for businesses to build and deploy secure video communication solutions based around WebRTC; the Jitsi Videobridge conferencing server; and the Jitsi Meet conferencing and collaboration application.

“The best video communications solutions are so intuitive and reliable that they help employees conduct shorter, more productive meetings. 8×8 has already developed a world-class meetings solution for enterprises, and we’re focused on maintaining leadership in delivering reliable, crystal-clear video and audio conferencing quality across mobile and desktop applications,” said Dejan Deklich, Chief Product Officer at 8×8, in a statement. “Incorporating Jitsi’s open-source technology into our video communications technology platform, and having Jitsi’s talented engineering team play a role in leading our development of dedicated conferencing applications and WebRTC, will open new paths for our customers and further enhance our meetings solution.”

Jitsi’s tools are used by a variety of platforms and businesses that want to include videoconferencing but would rather use an independent third-party service rather than incorporate one from a would-be competitor or build it themselves. Customers include Comcast and Symphony, the chat app used by the financial services industry.

This past weekend’s big news of IBM acquiring Red Hat for $34 million has emphasised just how central open source and cloud-based software are in today’s enterprise IT market. This purchase is far smaller, but is also part of that bigger trend.

“8×8 sees tremendous value in the open source community and is committed to helping grow the community even larger,” Ivov notes. “With a major, high-motivated backer like 8×8 behind the project, we are confident about our ability to continue building great open source products.”

This Open-Source Program Deepfakes You During Zoom Meetings, in Real Time

Video conferencing apps like Zoom and Skype are usually boring and often frustrating. With more people than ever using this software to work from home, users are finding new ways to spice up endless remote meetings and group hangs by looping videos of themselves looking engaged, adding wacky backgrounds, and now, using deepfake filters for impersonating celebrities when you're tired of your own face staring back at you in the front-facing camera window.

Avatarify is a program that superimposes someone else's face onto yours in real-time, during video meetings. The code is available on Github for anyone to use.

Programmer Ali Aliev used the open-source code from the "First Order Motion Model for Image Animation," published on the arxiv preprint server earlier this year, to build Avatarify. First Order Motion, developed by researchers at the University of Trento in Italy as well as Snap, Inc., drives a photo of a person using a video of another person—such as footage of an actor—without any prior training on the target image.

With other face-swap technologies, like deepfakes, the algorithm is trained on the face you want to swap, usually requiring several images of the person's face you're trying to animate. This model can do it in real-time, by training the algorithm on similar categories of the target (like faces).

"I ran [the First Order Model] on my PC and was surprised by the result. What’s important, it worked fast enough to drive an avatar real-time," Aliev told Motherboard. "Developing a prototype was a matter of a couple of hours and I decided to make fun of my colleagues with whom I have a Zoom call each Monday. And that worked. As they are all engineers and researchers, the first reaction was curiosity and we soon began testing the prototype."

Aliev made a video of himself as Elon Musk, pretending to join the wrong meeting, to demonstrate the tech. It's pretty clear that it's a fake, but the eyes and head move around well enough that it'd be a neat trick for a few seconds, before the rest of the call looks any closer.

Motherboard tested Avatarify, which is available open-source on Github, and found that while the code itself is accessible, it still requires a bit of programming knowledge and some decent hardware to run the app. You have to run Zoom or Skype, as well as streaming software and Avatarify at the same time, which takes a decent amount of computing power.

"The idea after Avatarify is availability and fun. Certainly it requires a powerful gaming PC to work smoothly, but we think optimization for laptops is just a matter of time," Aliev said. "It just allows people to have some fun while being locked down at home."

To be believable, you'd need to throw your voice to impersonate the face you're making—something deepfakes still struggle with doing realistically, like that awful vocal impression of Mark Zuckerberg. But some companies, like Dessa, are nailing audio deepfakes; combined with a Zoom bombing, tech like this could seem convincingly real.
