Starting out with void linux
Hey hey! welcome back. This is my first post that's not an introduction.
So i've been into linux for almost a year, and since then i've learned a lot. But i haven't limited my options to linux only, but also to other unix systems like bsd. When i was browsing r/unix, i saw someone commenting that one should try void linux, because its similar to bsd in a way: its minimalistic, transparent and easy to understand. its very good for those who are willing to start out with linux by learning how it works.
Its main features are the xbps package manager (you cant install programs via source code compiling like in gentoo) and the fact it uses runit as the init system, which (i think) is supposed to be some weird hybrid between systemd and sysvinit.
So yesterday i decided to give a try and made a bootable usb stick. its relatively easy to install. the hardest thing would be you having to know how to partition your system in a way that actually fits your needs, but even that is explained in the official documentation. Wi-fi support works surprisingly good by default, even better than debian.
I started out from nothing and decided to install i3wm in it, but since i had no prior knowledge in twms, i went to the arch wiki (void's official site said you can consult things there) to see how to install and configure it, and i also looked up yt videos. its nice that you can work on a pc with just a keyboard, not needing to use a mouse. reminds me a lot of those old keyboard-only portable computers. they're kinda cute.
As for the programs...i installed xfce's thunar file browser but it was a bit faulty. i couldn't access the trash bin to recover/delete files. i think i should install mate's caja or something? maybe.
Firefox works nice ig, but if you want really basic web browsing, like browsing sites that dont include js, you should try midori or lynx with framebuffer enabled (havent tried this one. only plain lynx on debian's cli). if i want to listen to a song or something i can use smtube and it doesnt consume much resources. a basic libreoffice install works wonderfully!! my 1.3 ghz cpu could handle calc (linux excel) better and without lagging than let's say debian...
So that was all guys. Can't see what the future awaits for me. maybe i should try openbsd/netbsd sometime soon. they interest me a lot. I hope you all enjoyed reading this. stay safe and see you soon!

So I actually use a few different OSes concurrently, and I'll only list the history on my daily driver computers, as I have too many computers in my collection to cover completely:
macOS (On my MacBook)
Fedora (On my secondary PC laptop and my 2018 Mac Mini)
Windows 10 (On my primary PC laptop)
My history is as follows:
macOS: 10.10 -> 10.11 -> current
Linux: Ubuntu 10.04, 12.04 - 15.10 -> Mint -> Ubuntu MATE -> Ubuntu Cinnamon -> MX Linux -> Fedora
DOS/Windows: XP -> 7 -> DOS 6.22/XP -> 10
Over the years I've also used (and still currently use on various computers) SunOS and Solaris (of course) (SunOS 4.1.4, Solaris 9, Solaris 10), NetBSD, OpenBSD, OpenIndiana, Slackware Linux, Windows ME, Windows 98 SE, Windows NT 4.0, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows Vista, MS-DOS 5, Windows 2000, Macintosh System 7, Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9, Mac OS 10.4, and Mac OS 10.6, and I also still run Mac OS 10.11, Ubuntu MATE, Windows XP, Windows 7, and MS-DOS 6.22.
Reblog with your distrohopping journey.

The Most Popular Linux Distros Of 2018
Tumblr media
2018 has come to a close and it is time to look back and see what were the 100 most popular Linux distros (distributions) of the past year.  We gathered our list from Distro Watch.  I find it amazing to see how Manjaro has come to dominate over the past year while Linux Mint has remained near the top.  Two dark horses that have made the top 5 are MX Linux and elementary while the once dominate Ubuntu has slipped to the number 5 spot. Where is your Linux distro on the list?  What are your thoughts on the list and do you find any of the numbers surprising? Here is the list:   Rank Distribution 1 Manjaro 2 Mint 3 elementary 4 MX Linux 5 Ubuntu 6 Debian 7 Solus 8 Fedora 9 openSUSE 10 Zorin 11 Antergos 12 CentOS 13 Arch 14 ReactOS 15 TrueOS 16 Kali 17 Lite 18 KDE neon 19 antiX 20 Lubuntu 21 PCLinuxOS 22 deepin 23 Endless 24 Peppermint 25 FreeBSD 26 SmartOS 27 Puppy 28 SparkyLinux 29 Ubuntu MATE 30 Parrot 31 Slackware 32 Mageia 33 Tails 34 Xubuntu 35 ArcoLinux 36 ArchLabs 37 Ubuntu Kylin 38 Q4OS 39 Bluestar 40 Bodhi 41 Archman 42 Devuan 43 Kubuntu 44 Voyager 45 Red Hat 46 Android-x86 47 Feren 48 Gentoo 49 Pop!_OS 50 LXLE 51 Slax 52 4MLinux 53 Nitrux 54 Robolinux 55 Ultimate 56 KaOS 57 Redcore 58 Netrunner 59 Ubuntu Budgie 60 KNOPPIX 61 Alpine 62 Qubes 63 Sabayon 64 SwagArch 65 ClearOS 66 Gecko 67 NixOS 68 DragonFly 69 GhostBSD 70 Ubuntu Studio 71 Neptune 72 ArchBang 73 Calculate 74 Trisquel 75 BlackArch 76 BunsenLabs 77 Scientific 78 Clonezilla 79 OpenBSD 80 Emmabuntüs 81 Pinguy 82 ROSA 83 siduction 84 AUSTRUMI 85 Tiny Core 86 NuTyX 87 Porteus 88 Raspbian 89 Container 90 Void 91 SteamOS 92 Absolute 93 BackBox 94 SolydXK 95 ExTiX 96 Oracle 97 Artix 98 Kodachi 99 Vector 100 Omarine   Read the full article

OpenBSD + Xfce4 Kurulumu
Tumblr media
ftp://ftp.ulak.net.tr/pub/OpenBSD/6.0/amd64/install60.fs
# dd if=/location/install*.fs of=/dev/rsd6c bs=1m
Adım 2: Internet’e bağlanmak
Eğer kablolu kullanıyorsanız, OpenBSD size kullanmak istediğiniz interface’i soruyor ve DHCP üzerinden IP talep ediyor. Kablosuz kullanmak istiyorsanız; aşağıdaki şekilde Wifi bağlantısını gerçekleştirebilirsiniz.
ifconfig kullanarak bağlantıyı sağlayacağız.
# ifconfig -a # tüm interfaceleri görmenizi sağlar, kablolu ve kablosuz arayüzü görebilirsiniz. # ifconfig iwn0 up # # ifconfig iwn0 scan # wifi ssid’leri arıyoruz. # ifconfig iwn0 nwid wifi_adı wpakey wifi_parolası # bu şekilde ssid’e bağlanıyoruz. # dhclient iwn0 # ip talep ediyoruz.
Adım 3: Paket yansı(mirror) adresi belirlemek
Kurulumu tamamladıktan sonra OpenBSD’e giriş yaparak başlıyoruz. Paket kurabilmek için pkg_add kullanıyoruz, tıpkı debian’ın apt’si arch’ın pacman’i gibi fakat bundan önce bir yansı adresi belirlememiz ve bu PATH’i .profile içerisinde eklememiz gerekiyor. Aşağıdaki şekilde yansıyı .profile içerisine ekliyoruz.
$ echo "PKG_PATH=http://www.mirrorservice.org/pub/OpenBSD/6.0/packages/amd64/" >> .profile $ echo "export PKG_PATH" >> .profile $ cat .profile # kontrol et:)
Daha sonra pkg_add, pkg_delete, pkg_info, pkg_check gibi komutları kullanarak istediğimiz paket üzerinde işlem yapabiliriz. Ben aşağıdaki şekilde bir vim kurulumu yaptım.
pkg_add vim
