I'm technically considered a super user, but please don't take that too seriously. Mine is a computer savvy equivalent of knowing how to hook up a SNES to older TVs.
Which is why I finally made the jump to a linux computer. I'm not some ravenous linux fan, this was purely motivated by
Windows is a trash fire of background process devoted to the bullshit "AI" they're using to court investors, corporate spyware, and inefficiencies
Fuck climbing on to the Apple money trap
My leagues more tech savvy MIL kept talking up Bazzite. Which is the desktop side of the steamOS used on Valve's Steamdeck portable.
My linux desktop basically looks like and does pretty much everything my windows can, but runs twice as fast (probably faster, but you get the idea). Now don't get me wrong, there was a little bit of learning and searching to get it there. But it amounted to a total of maybe 5 hours of inconvenience over two days. However, I have discord. I have slack. I have OBS. An office suite like MS Office used to be. And so much more
I can run all the steam games I care about, and also run windows ones using a built in emulator called Wine/Proton. And, due to the previously cited reason 1, the windows emulation is faster then an actual windows machine. And this is a free operating system in a user maintained environment for users--it will never go out of date due to planned obsolescence.
The main reason I'm considered a "super user" is that I do research on my computer problems. I'm not a math wiz. I don't have the patience for programming. If you've got time and hardware, or a friend who can assist, I definitely recommend going this route.
maybe i like my tech a little bit inconvenient

ARCH PSA
for once I'm doing something productive with this blog, anyways:
If you're an Arch user and the type of person (like me) who updates every couple of months I encourage you to update now. The 'linux-firmware' package has been split up into several packages and may cause errors upon updating. This came out a month ago so I'm a little late, but still go ahead and double check

Hi I'm changing from Windows to Mint in two weeks and I'm trying to make sure I write down all my passwords and every program I want to make sure I still have access to I'm so stressed and scared but... like I know it's do or die. I'm never putting Windows 11 on my computer and October is the kill date. I could use a few words of encouragement as I stress through the next few weeks of going over and over tutorials and pray I don't brick my computer.
You're going to have so much sex after you install linux.

linux mentioned!!!!
I saw you mention your plex server! As a fellow lover of toys, what is your home server setup and what all do you use it for? :o
i literally JUST started setting it up so right now for testing purposes i have the server running off of my main office PC and i only have a couple movies and shows on it. i currently have Thunderbolts*, Umamusume beginning of a new era movie, Wicked, Gravity Falls S1&2 and Umamusume S1&2 in the library for feature testing. the umamusume movies and episodes are particularly nice for subtitle testing.
i SHOULD at some point today be getting a cheap GMKtec mini PC delivered that I plan to install Linux on and hook up an external HDD to in hopes that it’ll become my primary Plex media server. assuming i can get the setup working properly, and potentially even figure out file transfers from my PC to the server over local network, then my next step in the future after we’ve made full use of the current HDD is to get a large capacity HDD enclosure and just fill it with terabytes of free space to use indefinitely.

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU Coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux." The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows were compiled with GCC, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even if you were correct, you won't be for long." With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.
