Closing the Chapter on ORYCS: A Successful Project with Impactful Insights

Ok so Crescent City has been out for like a week and we have No Concrete Ship Names Yet. This is a problem and I am proposing a drive to fix this. These are what I have so far:

my favorite scifi is the kind where you see some questionable morality scientist plan whatever shit's gonna happen for a really long time and you know it's gonna go bad but it's always really entertaining to follow

This plan was designed by Dawn, who is in the process of executing it. So far we have 2 dimorphodons, a parasaur, a baryonyx, and a diloph set up in a fully-built base right above the cave we want to explore. I had three dimorphs but. 🤭 One of them was super pretty so we took it home to breed with our main level 78 dimorph!

Im not sure what else should gaurd the base. I think I should keep going with Dawn's r selection plan: lots of small creatures who get minimal attention and hopefully just outnumber the dangers. My biggest worry is Orycs, tbh, since they can fly up to my base, and since I've seen them destroy standing torches and feeding troughs. I don't want them to destroy my whole base lol.

ghhfg well i dunno if i’m at the headcanons stage for this but rather i have a singular scenario in my mind. where riderman arrives in a quaint dusty desert town to do some typical rider investigations into suspicious activity nearby and the man he sits down next to at the bar (he orders ginger ale bc riderman is a teetotaler) is like “my, you seem a bit out of place in these parts” 

and he turns and is like Uh. What. bc he could’ve sworn kazami was still in italy and wouldn’t he have contacted him somehow if he was coming this way for an undercover operation? but maybe not, right? he likes to think he would’ve bc they have something going on but it’s in that phase where they don’t talk about it or acknowledge it so he’s always wondering if it’s all just in his head.

but this guy genuinely doesn’t seem to know who he is so now he’s on edge bc he’s pretty sure this is an evil organization plot and is warily like “you look exactly like someone i know.” and ken makes one of his annoying flirty ken faces and goes “oh? he must be quite a fine man, then.”

and then some other stuff happens i guess. action, probably. a smooch, perhaps. maybe i’ll have another vision of this in my dreams.

Call to anyone majoring in english literature

Ya girl has just been asked to be the composer in residence for the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir, which is REALLY FREAKING COOL but sooooo much pressure. (I’m not a real composer! I’m a 17-year-old girl who composed one piece that got a lot of attention and is now expected to compose more!)

Thing is... while I’m very well-versed (pun intended) in music, I know absolutely jack squat about poetry and literature. This has proven to be a problem... I don’t even know where to start.

I want to compose a larger work with several movements. I’m thinking of doing a kind of pot-pourri type thing of pieces set to texts by female poets, or something along those lines. I think I want the poems to represent someone’s journey learning about life, its meaning, and who they are/their purpose. Honestly though, anything by anyone that would be good set to contemporary choral music would be good.

Please help out your small friend who’s just trying to do create something meaningful and prove I’m worthy of the task that’s been assigned to me. Or at least share this so someone else can see it and maybe help. This is a really big deal to me (and in general, as ORYC is the premiere youth choir of my city) and I’m really stressed about this and want to do well.

After Namibia has re-opened its boarders and cases of COVID-19 infection are decreasing currently, our PhD student Tim Herkenrath togehther with former NUST MSc student Kaarina Shilula grasped the opportunity to resume our studies at Etosha Heights Private Game Reserve in order to diminish the negative impact of an interrupted field season to the greatest extent possible. A long-term experiment was set-up last year already to measure sap flow densities as a proxy for water use in mopane trees (Colophospermum mopane) under different degrees of simulated leaf browsing. First results provide good evidence that individuals, which have experienced a decent level of herbivory, show a reduced amount of water use (see 3rd Newsletter).

Apparently, a decreased amount of water that is taken up from the ground by plants is likely to affect soil moisture contents. This link will be examined during the next step of our study in more details. Right now, we are installing soil probes that measure sub-canopy soil moisture content in 6 different depths. Even though drilling holes in a dry African Savanna is quite strenuous and sweaty, we are now curious to obtain first promising results as soon as wet seasons begins. Furthermore, we are particularly interested in potential feedbacks between altered soil moisture conditions and germination success of grasses. In addition, the start of the rainfall season will enable us to explore even more aspects of water use strategies of mopane and how these might change in response to herbivorous pressure. Thus, we are keen to conduct a variety of analyses including stomatal conductance measurements, pressure-volume curves and isotopic analyses of xylem water during the following weeks. These results together with sap flow and soil moisture data will provide further profound insights into consequences of mammalian herbivory on tree water use and its relevance for vertical water fluxes and ecosystem functioning at landscape level. Our findings will contribute to the main objective of ORYCS, which aims to assess chances, risks and sustainability of wildlife based land-use in Namibian savannas.

reading about the doomed world in which scientists rule and culture vanishes scares me. a scientist to-be. how can I help preserve culture and the arts in my community and within myself? The busy schedule of the IB no longer allows me enough time, as I would previously need, to have conscious blank moments and fleeting thoughts. IB swallows me, trapping me in a room of grey and nothingness. It seems to me that because IB takes up so much of my time, and that IB time is serious solemn work, I will have to develop a manner of making the most out of my remaining time. How can I be the most creative, free-minded and chilled when I am not working? dancing? singing? movies (rather a gateway out for negative and extreme emotions)? How can I get myself so acquainted to the IB curriculum that working can sometimes feel at ease and self-expressive? how can I nurture the cultural and artistic part of myself - which has always been waiting to be released out of the sea of delocalized fear of failure to recognize a cultural or artistic idea? how can I be a scientist, not for myself, not for materialism, not for others but humanity for all I have today I owe people, the society, the citizens, the nation, the community? how can I learn from Jimmy’s mom?

Paraecologists start data collection on predators

A total of 39 GPS tracking devices have now been deployed in Etosha Heights, Violugia (mixed cattle and game farm), and Etosha National Park. The species we have tagged are springbok, giraffe, kudu and eland. One of the research questions centres around what causes the species to use some areas more than others, and behave differently in different areas. An obvious driver which is being studied is the vegetation and habitat characteristics. Since our study area has a large density of large predators, an obvious relevant parameter is the presence of lion, hyaena, leopard and cheetah. Areas which might offer nutritious grazing for herbivores might be within an area with a high density of carnivores. This “landscapes of fear” factor should also be factored into the equation.

To determine frequency and locality of predators across the study area, the help of citizens who reside and work in the area has been obtained. We have titled them paraecologists, and have equipped and trained them to collect large carnivore activity within our study area. The app Epicollect was used to create a data collection form that can be easily used on smartphones. 

ORYCS provided geo-able smartphones to paraecologists without smartphones. Farm managers, game guides and anti-poaching operatives are currently collecting data as part of their duties to integrate with the ORYCS models on herbivore movement and activity. Data are then quality-controlled at NUST’s Biodiversity Research Centre. This is a cost effective and mutually-beneficial solution which involves the stakeholders, making the science of the project more real and understandable.
