Hey everybody I know it's been a bit, forgive me!!!

Lately I've been thinking about the internalized sexism in The Polar Bear Explorers' Club, specifically in Stella. So here's an absolute ramble for all 8 of u:

I mean, obviously Stella thinks women can be explorers, but she doesn't fail to make fun of and absolutely hate on her Aunt, Agatha, who would apparently represent the norm for women at the time. She resents her, in fact, for not being a total hippie like Felix is. But Felix has freedom as a man that Agatha doesn't!! Stuff like Stella pointing out her nostril hair (everyone has nostril hair???) and how she dresses just feels so odd. It's like she's saying "you're not even doing gender roles right".

Stella's written as an odd-girl-out and it can make her a little unlikeable at times. The "not like the other girls" approach to her character makes it so almost every other woman in the book is belittled or negatively portrayed.

The least feminine woman in the series would probably be Scarlett, and she's quite literally the antagonist. Cadi I would say is a close second, and while she is liked by Stella it's because she's cool and still girly, to an extent. I can't even really recall other women in the story, because they're all so bleh. The decrepit old witch? Evil for like half the series, then a plot device, then written out. What I'm trying to get at here is that Stella has no meaningful female connections, not really. She doesn't identify with them, or the image of women at the time. Still, she wants to be pretty.

Listen, I'm all for the "WOMEN CAN KICK ASS IN DRESSES!!!" thing, and I appreciate that Stella does wear trousers and stuff on the expedition. But the level of pretty sparkly unicorn dress seems like a last ditch effort to say STELLA STILL LIKES GIRLY THINGS! SHE LIKES WOMEN!

I think we have to blame Felix for Stella's mindset here, a little! I love Felix, you love Felix. But he's a rich, white, man (I know he's gay but like woowww a privileged gay man who's written to be loved the challenges the representation!) that despite his best efforts to project his borderline toxic positivity onto Stella, he still let his distaste for his sister seep into Stella.

Obviously, women in this society are basically raised to hate on each other, and themselves. It's not all Felix's fault, and he's doing pretty well considering.

I think Stella could've done with having some sort of female role models, there can't have only been her, Cadi and Scarlett defying the norm out there. I also think Felix should've made more of an effort to expose her to stuff like that. He is very "women can't be explorers" until he's like "let me use my man money power to let you be an explorer" instead of actually like... Helping to change things himself, he basically puts all the pressure on his 12 year old daughter with no experience exploring or representing women as a group at all into the position of being "the first woman to be an explorer". It just feels like bad parenting, to me.

The parents! I’ve spent a very long time thinking about these books so I do have some ideas about the parents and their appearances, dynamics, roles etc. I’m obviously glad they weren’t a big part of the books, but it’s fun to think about what they were all doing when their children were fucking about in the most dangerous places in the world. These are quite rough sketches so I’ll draw them properly at some point.

Febuwhump Day 1 - Helpless

Characters: Sokka, Katara

HELPLESS

Gunfire echoed in the crawlspace. Plastic pellets ricocheted off the concrete wall outside. Katara shrieked, flinching in Sokka’s protective hold.

“Shh, quiet!” he said, his voice pitched in a low whisper. “They’ll hear you!”

Katara nodded, and put her hands over her mouth. Sokka peeked out through the slats of the vent grate that concealed them from the street. Clouds of tear gas obstructed his view of the clashing protestors and OSec enforcers. He clenched his fists. They weren’t doing anything wrong! Why did the enforcers start shooting?

A VTOL flew overhead, rotors clearing the tear gas away as it hovered, revealing a horrifying tableau: a line of protestors on their knees, OSec enforcers standing guard. In the middle of the line, Sokka could see his mom and dad. He gasped, and pulled Katara closer into him so she wouldn’t see. Even over the VTOL, though, they heard everything.

“You can’t do this, Ozai,” Dad said, hands bound behind his back. “We have rights! The Conglomerate can’t just dictate whatever it likes!”

“Employs such as yourself should refrain from causing a public disturbance,” the man called Ozai said. He was tall, dressed in enforcer armor, and when he removed his helmet Sokka got a good look at his face: haughty, cruel, with piercing golden eyes and a well-groomed beard. “Illegal assembly, inciting a riot, assaulting members of the security services, and resisting arrest are all serious breaches of policy.”

“To hell with your policy!” Dad spat. “The Assembly won’t roll over for you or your corporate dogs!”

“They already have,” Ozai said with a triumphant smirk. Sokka clapped a hand over his mouth as OSec began to execute protestors. Dad and mom struggled to break free, to fight back, but they were helpless against OSec, helpless to stop Ozai as he drew his own gun—armed with lead slugs to kill—and fired.

The first shot went through dad’s eye. The enforcer holding him was splattered with flecks of blood and bone. Mom screamed and lunged for Ozai. The second shot went through her chest. Maybe it went through her heart. From this angle, Sokka couldn’t see. What he did see was his mom crumple to the ground, twitching and bleeding, while Ozai holstered his gun.

“Clean this up,” Ozai ordered.

“Yes, Commissioner!”

Sokka and Katara huddled silently as OSec removed the bodies. They remained in place as street cleaners came and removed the blood and debris.

“Sokka, I’m hungry,” Katara said.

“We don’t know if it’s safe yet,” Sokka replied, his own stomach growling.

A pair of running shoes stopped by the grate. Katara gasped in shock, and then Bato’s face appeared.

“Sokka? Katara?” He called quietly. “It’s okay. You can come out, now.”

“Where’s mom?” Katara asked as she clambered out.

“I’m sorry, Katara,” Bato said, shaking his head.

“Where will we go now?” Sokka asked.

“Somewhere safe,” Bato said. “Follow me.”

At 15, Sokka had watched the Conglomerate murder his parents. He vowed he would never be helpless again.

Lineup - one for the kids, one for their adult versions! I probably need to take a break from thinking about these guys but drawing this was so fun!! I have some vague ideas about what they’d do as adults but mostly I’m just whacking adult clothes on them.

Physical head canons for the OSEC group!

(I am working on an actual fic, however i am dead terrified of mischaracterising them to the point where I am struggling to write. So head canons instead)

Under cut:

I think Ursula has very rough hands, lots of callous on them. She works with machines so I think her hands have a couple scars on them from mishaps while repairing stuff. Also! She’s a mermaid, so she’s going to be in water a lot. More often than not if you touch her hands you’ll find them wrinkled as hell. <- your fingers wrinkle in water to help you better grip wet stuff.  Also, I think she has a scar on her nose from where she swam into a rock when first learning to swim.

Genie! She’s not been an explorer as long as Jai and Max, nor does she mess around with machines a lot, so I don’t think she has as many scars as the others. However she’s always covered in a variety of temporary injuries: hot glue gun burns and small cuts from her creating her hats. She’s got dimples i think, on both sides, and freckles. They all have freckles actually -when they’re not on expeditions they’re back at the base and that place is very sunny in my mind. She’s also got a little gap between her front two teeth.

Jai! First off: he was born missing his arm, so no traumatic accident there. However people like spreading strange rumours about how he lost his arm so depending on who you ask depends on what you get told. Also! The further into the series you get the less ‘perfect’ his appearance is (a physical manifestation of how he’s able to let his dad go, as well as the need to be always perfect). He has a few acne scars as well as just acne in general -especially on his jaw. After the book ends, I think he gets braces. He’d probably get them in the club's colours because he's a nerd <3 he’s also just got an assortment of small scars from previous expeditions. (It’s canon that he has a long straight nose btw. Putting this here for myself because I *will* forget otherwise)

Now Max! Like Ursula, Max is almost always working with machines, so his hands are quite scarred. He’s also got a bunch of random scars (like Jai) due to previous expeditions. I like to think he has a couple moles, one on his shoulder and two on his face. When he’s nervous or bored he chews his nails, so they’re constantly short. He’s broken a couple bones -a mix of doing incredibly stupid things and just getting into unfortunate situations- more than any of the others. He’s also got a lot of freckles; not so much on his face, but his shoulders and back are covered by them.

It's just a couple of silly head canons, but these were fun to come up with! it also helps me with visualising the characters lol. I might do more of these, i'm working on a clothing one atm.

I might also do something like this for the PBEC when i read it.

“Kuya doie, here na po kami ni sephie and onej” paalam ni Mark kay Dowy na kausap nya sa phone. “Sige, pakisabi naman i’ll try to habol nalang, i have a class till 9:30pm pa.” sagot nito, umoo naman si mark saka binaba ang phone. “Where’s rintaro ba? He’s gonna be here later ‘di ba?” tanong ni sephie, “Yes perd, wait lang natin si chi, nasakanya daw susi nasa college of business and accounts pa” sagot nito jeno habang nagrereply kay ricci. Napalingon naman sila nang marinig nilang nagbukas yung pinto papunta sa lobby ng office, “Oh, kuyas? hindi pa po ba open yung meeting room?” Tanong ni Andy kasama si Callie, “Kuya sephie, you look so pogi today. Papacute ka kay Kali no?” pang-aasar nito, “Hey I always look good kaya.” natatawang sagot ni sephie, “Anyway, malalate si Rin and Kali, pinatawag sila sa College of Law sasali ata ulit sila na natcon”, daldal ni chenle habang nakaupo sila sa lobby, hinihintay si chi, “I’m here naa” hingal na sabi ni chi, agad namang tumayo si Jeno at kinuha ang bag ni chi pati narin ang mga buhay nito, “dahan-dahan, baby” sabi ni onej, “yuck” unang word na sinabi ni henry pagkapasok nya ng office. inirapan lang sya ni ricci at binuksan na ang meeting room, “Let’s wait for a while lang guys, kakaopen lang ng aircon. We can start the meeting by 9:15pm, no need to wait for sevi and blue nagpaalam sila na hindi sila makakaattend since they’re training for an interschool competition. Kaliya also messaged me that her, rintaro, and tetsu will be late kase pinatawag sila ng dean ng COL for natcon.”

Tumango nalang sila at hinintay pa ang ibang myembro na kayang humabol sa meeting, “Okay it’s now 9:15pm, I would first like to introduce myself, I’m Callista Zhong the Treasurer of HQU CSO together with me our dear Auditor and PRO, I hope we’re all familiar with each othen naman na. Also, Gigi is here from OSEC she’s assigned to making the MoM for this meeting.” Pag-uumpisa ni Callie, si sephie naman ay paikot-ikot ang tingin habang hinihintay si rintaro at kaliya, “Ahem, VP Externals” pagtawag ni dowy ng attention kay Sephie, “Oh, right— Hello, everyone! I’m Joseph Gabrielle Na, the VP for Externals of HQU JMA. I just transferred here 2 sems ago.” Pagpapakilala nito, napakunot naman yung noo ni Henry, “What uni ka galing?” tanong nya nawala naman ang ngiti ni Sephie, “From SMU sya before, kuya! Anyway, how many sponsors do we need for this project pala para me and kuya sephie can start na with the invites?” Sabat ni Andy, they all felt the awkward atmosphere starting to surround the meeting. Ricci was about to say something but was cut off by the door opening, it was Rintaro, Tetsuroo, and Kaliya, “I told you we should’ve knocked!” Kaliya scold Rintaro when they felt all eyes on then, Rintaro just rolled his eyes like the brat that he is, “Sorry for interrupting the meeting, guys. Continue lang kayo dyan.” Sabat ni Tetsuro habang tinatakpan yung dalawang magtatarayan sa likod nya, napatawa naman si Henry at Mark sa tarayam ni Kaliya at Rintaro.

“Wala na andyan nawala yung tatlong maingay” Pagrereklamo ni onej, tinabihan naman ito ni Kaliya, “Talaga ba? ano muna yung tinag mo sa dump?” Tanong ni Kaliya kaya nasamid si Sephie at tumawa si Onej, “Wala wala back to the meeting na nga” Natatawang sabi ni onej, “Anyway, so the main objective of this partnership is to…” Tuloy na pagdiscuss ni callie sa mga deliverables and responsibilities ng dalawang organisasyon. Nagnonote naman si Rintaro sa tabi ni Sephie, “Perd, wag mo naman titigan” Bulong ni Mark kay Sephie, napatingin naman si Rintaro kung saan nakatingin si Sephie, “Orb umamin ka nga, si kali ba gusto mo o si onej?” natatawang pang-aasar ni Rin, sinamaan lang sya ng tingin ni Sephie.

11:00 pm — CSO Office

“If there’s no more questions and concerns, I would like to officially adjourn this meeting.” Callie finally said making everyone sigh, especially gigi “Grabe mga yapper ‘di na naawa sa gagawa ng MoM” reklamo nito, napatawa naman si Kaliya, “I’ll buy you lunch tomorrow ate gigi hihi”, Henry wrapped her arms around Kali’s waist and bury his face on her neck, “Dinner tayo, baby” he whines making Kaliya laugh, “Kami pa nyan hoy” saway ni Rintaro, “Bukas shift mo diba? Sakin sya today” dagdag pa nito. “Luh, akala ko ba ako baby mo?” Madramang sabay ni Sephie, sinamaan naman sya ng tingin ni Kaliya, “Ah ikaw pala yung kabit ni Rin” Sabi nito, napatawa nalang si Sephie. “Ayan ang famous love rectangle ng HQU” Natatawang sabi ni Ricci, “‘wag ka na magdamot perd, sabay sabay na tayo mag dinner” sabi ni mark kay rintaro, “Sorry guys, I have prior arrangements with some friends tonight” paalam ni dowy, “Sus, ganyan ka na kuya doie ‘di mo nako love.” Pagddrama ni Kali, tinawanan lang sya ni dowy at umalis na ‘to. “So where po tayo?” Tanong ni Andy habang binubuhat ang laptop at bag ni Callie, napatingin naman si Sephie kay Kaliya na may buhat mukang mabigat na bag. Napansin ni mark ang tingin ni Sephie kaya kinuha nya ang bag ni Kali at inabot kay Sephie, “Hoy, gago nakakahiya!” hirit ni Kali na gustong bawiin yung bag nya pero buhat na ni Sephie na nakangisi lang, “It’s okay, your bag is kind of heavy so i’ll hold it for you nalang” Sabi nito, nakatingin lang si Chi at Onej habang nakangisi sakanilang dalawa, “So ano na nga? San tayo?” Tanong ni Mark, “Devour tayo, i want birria” Suggest ni Callie napatawa naman si Andy at inakbayan ito, “Babe, it’s closed na it’s way past 10pm na kaya” sagot nito, “Where ba dapat kayo madidiner, Sunarin?” tanong ni Henry, “Delgado, i’m craving their salpicao since we got back from alabang” sagot ni rintaro. “Then let’s go there nalang”, aya ni Sephie “Yes please, they have the best palabok swear” sagot ni Kali habang nakakapit kay Henry. “Pag yan ‘di masarap papaproofread ko sayo locgov ko” banta ni Henry, “Baby, kahit ako pa gumawa ng research mo swear you’ll like their palabok” sagot ni Kaliya napatawa nalang sila at umalis na papunta sa parking.

“Uhm… Sephie? yung bag ko please” she asked for her bag, Sephie smiled “Where’s your car ba? i’ll walk you there nalang, it’s kind of mabigat eh so i’ll carry it for you nalang” sabi nito napangiti naman so Kaliya, “I didn’t being my car, kay rin ako sasabay iisa naman kami ng dorm. Tsaka ano ba? Kaninang umaga ko pa buhat yan, okay lang naman” sagot ni Kaliya, “Exactly, you’ve been carrying this the whole day and it’s heavy. Just rest your shoulders nalang, let’s go to rin’s car.” sabi ni Sephie. Habang naglalakad sila hindi nila napansin na nasa likod nila si Chi, Jeno, Mark, at Henry “I believe bagay” bulong ni chi kay onej, “bagay talaga, baby” natatawang sabi ni onej.

11:30pm — Delgado 112, Tomas Morato

“Wtf ang mahal ng parking?!” Reklamo ni Henry, “I told you to ride with us nalang kase, babalik din naman kami ng Uni after” inirapan sya ni Kaliya, “Ayoko sainyong dalawa naghahapon kayo pag nag-uusap i feel out of place” Sagot ni Henry timawanan lang sya mi Kaliya at Rintaro, sumunod naman sila Sephie and the others, “Oh, where’s your bag?” tanong ni Sephie, “I left it in the car I don’t wanna work on acads while eating dinner baka mawalan pako ng gana pag sinilip ko canvas ko” pagsusungit ni Kaliya, “Hoy bff ‘wag mo namang sungitan agad yung baby ko” saway ni Rintaro “‘di naman ako nagsusungit” she mumbles but loud enough for Sephie to hear which made him laugh and pat her head, “It’s fine, rin”, he answered which made Kaliya smile cheekily making Rintaro roll his eyes at her while smiling. “Table for 8 please” Rintaro lead them while holding Kaliya’s hand, “It’s like you have two boyfriends” Sephie chuckles, “Oh please, the only act sweet in public places ‘coz they’re making bakod kasi ayaw nila malamangan” Natatawang sabi ni Kaliya, “Talaga, if wala akong jowa dapat ikaw din. Crab mentality ba” Pagbibiro ni Rintaro.

They got seated on a round table, Kaliya seating i. between Henry and Rintaro while Sephie sat in between Andy and Jeno, “Wait, umalis na si Tetsu?” Tanong ni Chi, “Yes, may date daw sila ni kei— yung jowa nyang taga lozol” sagot ni Rintaro, “Oh, yung bff ng jowa ni chumu?” Tanong ni Gigi, “Yes ate gi, si tobio-chan my babyboi” Sagot ni Kaliya, “Ate Kali I thought I was your babyboy?” Pagpapacute ni Andy, “Ayaw ni lele, sakanya ka daw eh buti pa si chumu willing mag share” natatawang sagot ni Kaliya, “Chumu as in Miya Atsumu? from the gold uni?” Tanong ni Sephie, “Yes orb, ‘di ko ba nakwento? Me, Kali, Kuya Shin, tapos yung kambal we’re all from south, zobel peeps. Pero kami ni Kaliya since elem sa Japan magkasama na kami” sagot ni rintaro habang nagbabasa ng menu, “Oh, so you guys were raised in Japan?” Tanong ni Sephie, “Not really? Our parents didn’t want us to be like the other halfsies that don’t know their culture so we lived in japan for primary school but we grew up here sa PH, beneficial lang yung nihongo skills namin pag may pinagchichismisan kami” pag-explain ni Kaliya, “Yes mostly naman binabackstab lang namin si Henry” dagdag ni Rintaro, nginitian naman ni Kaiya si Henry, “Baby?” henry called out to kali with a faux innocent tone which made her laugh even more.

12:00am — Streets of Tomas Morato

Pagkatapos kumain ay nagsi-uwian na yung iba pero nagdecide si Sephie na mag stay dahil nagstay si Kaliya, Rintaro, at Henry. Sephie and Kaliya are now walking side by side and Sephie is now holding her bag, “So where kayo?” Tanong ni Sephie habang naglalakad, “I’m here” sagot ni Kaliya napakunot naman ng noo si Sephie, “Cafe I’m Here, around circle lang” Natatawang sagot ni Kaliya, “Ahhh, are we gonna walk lang?” tanong ni sephie, “Yes pooo” Si Henry naman ang sumagot.
