Hinton says the outsiders was inspired by her greaser friends, specifically one of them getting jumped by a car full of rich kids. So now I’m thinking of a variation on the “Ponyboy exaggerates the story” hcs: the story is written by one of Ponyboy’s friends, a girl outside of his gang.
“Well, Pony? What do you think of the story?”
“It’s real good. But I think people are gonna know I didn’t write it.”
“Why’s that?”
“Nobody talks that much about how handsome their own brothers are. There’s pages and pages of you moonin over Soda and Darry. Mostly Soda.”
“Shut up. I am not mooning.”
“And I can’t believe how many people you killed off. You killed Johnny and Dal. You killed my parents!”
“I know, sorry. I had to do it for the story.”
“It’s pretty funny that you killed Bob Sheldon, though.”
“Yeah, I just hate that guy.”
“And why’d you make Sandy cheat on Soda?”
“To show that his problems never get any attention-“
