Crypto Crying out for Regulation as Thailand Leads the Way
Industry professionals and CEOs of blockchain companies are clamouring for regulators to clarify the legal status of cryptocurrencies to open up innovation and help âsmart moneyâ to move into the space. Thailand has shown how it can be done even if their policies are not crypto-friendly enough.
Regulation Will Encourage Growth
Regulation is often given a bad press but in light of the six-month bear market defining 2018, it appears that innovation is waiting on regulatory clarity. During London Tech Week, the common theme was that the industry wants clear regulation.
Speaking at the âZeroing In On Europeâ conference on June 16, former Blackrock investor, Adam Grimsley, co-founder of Prime Factor Capital, said:
âConcerns around volatility, lack of liquidity, and regulatory uncertainty were more than enough to prevent the so-called traditional smart money from entering the arena.â
Coinbase UK CEO made a speech at the Blockchain Summit on June 13 in which he said that the industry needs to work with current financial institutions and educate them before we can achieve a crypto âutopia.â Zeeshan Feroz, UK CEO of Coinbase, told NewsBTC:
âFrom a government point of view, we should be engaging with the space and looking at how we facilitate it. The biggest step at this stage is regulation, give businesses some certainty and give them a framework to operate within that will help grow it.â
A lot of ICOs have banned U.S. citizens from participating due to a lack of clarity over whether or not they classify as securities. Monaco VISA told U.S., India, Hong Kong and Singapore citizens that they are excluded due to âexcessive regulatory risk.â Rather than risk engaging with these markets, ICOs are just enforcing blanket bans to protect themselves, missing out on further funding and more development of the industry.
Speaking at BitcoinCRE on June 14, the founder of CPROP, Sandy Selman said: âWe decided to use a tradeable entity. If it became a security it would kill our business. We decided not to take any U.S. money to not deal with the problem.â
Governments Can Regulate Crypto
Thailand has shown that governments can provide clear regulation on cryptocurrencies. In May, it enacted a regulatory framework for âdigital assets and digital tokens.â The bill sets out requirements for ICOs to register with the Thailand SEC to make sure that they comply with current laws. Although the taxes are currently quite high, it proves that governments can successfully regulate the industry.
In order to achieve the same clarity, the U.S. needs to decide which bodies are regulating cryptocurrencies. Recently, the SEC cleared up a few questions and confirmed that Ethereum is not a security but the IRS has deemed it property, and taxable. In response to the confusion, the state of Florida has created the position of a âcrypto czarâ to help make state-specific regulations.
Across the globe, other countries need to speed up their decision-making processes. In Europe, the UK established a task force back in March and the European Commission launched the EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum in February. However, no regulation has yet been made apart from an anti-money laundering agreement by the EU.

HyperBlock Acquires Cryptocurrency Mining Firm CryptoGlobal for C$106 Million
Canadian technology firm HyperBlock announced the acquisition of all issued and outstanding shares of cryptocurrency mining company CryptoGlobal in a CAD$106 million deal, subject to regulatory approval.
HyperBlock to Merge with CryptoGlobal in C$106 Million Deal
The merger is due to take place in May 2018 under the name HyperBlock Technologies Corp. and will give absolute control of Hyperblock over CryptoGlobalâs operations and assets, including its thousands of mining rigs currently focused on Bitcoin, DASH, Ether, and Litecoin. HyperBlockâs range of services includes Mining-as-a Service (MAAS), self-mining, server hosting, and server hardware sales.
âOur aim is to become a comprehensive direct-to-consumer crypto company, offering products and services to the mainstream customer for making and managing their crypto-asset investments,â Sean Walsh, CEO at HyperBlock, told Reuters. âCombining HyperBlockâs large-scale mining-as-a-service model with CryptoGlobalâs existing mining, custodial storage, and crypto trading businesses creates a strong foundation for both organic growth and growth through acquisition.â
Sean Walsh will become the CEO of the combined company, while CryptoGlobal co-founders Rob Segal and James Millership, will join the management team. The C$106 million deal comes one week after CryptoGlobal announcing the acquisition of Blockchain Dynamics, in a buyout valued at approximately $30 million. The founder of the firm, Chris McGarrigle, will also join the management team of the combined company. HyperBlock plans to issue up to approximately 60.4 million common shares to CryptoGlobal shareholders, which will own about 25.2 percent of the new company, HyperBlock Technologies Corp.
âWe are poised to become a global leader and consolidator in cryptocurrency mining and asset managementâ, said Walsh, as HyperBlock Technologies will be offering a wide range of services, including MAAS, server hosting, self-mining, server sales, cryptocurrency storage and trading, as well as a âSaaS-based cryptocurrency insights platformâ. The combined company will own over 21,000 mining servers and 28 MW of power, extensible to 90MW, to mine cryptocurrencies in North America.
 CryptoGlobal had agreed to acquire Bitcity in February 2018 in a deal consisting of $39,000,000 common shares to be paid in four instalments and a $1 million cash payment in exchange of a 100 MW, ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and hosting deal to build out a 40,000 sq foot cryptocurrency mine in Ontario.
A previous acquisition deal between CryptoGlobal and BitCity Group announced in February will have its due diligence period extended to 30 April 2018. CryptoGlobalâs agreement to acquire BitCity Group includes a 100 MW, ten-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and hosting deal to build out a 40,000 sq foot cryptocurrency mine in Ontario. CryptoGlobal also canceled a $15 million debt financing agreement announced in March.
Once the acquisition is completed at the end of May, HyperBlock Technologies Corp. will apply to be listed on the Canadian Securities Exchange.

Shares of Chipotle opened sharply higher on Wednesday morning's news, just as a losing team's fan base rallies when a new head coach is tapped. However, a bad team is still a bad team -- and an out-of-favor burrito roller is going to continue to be an out-of-favor burrito roller. If you're holding out for a wizard to magically turn things around the way that Steve Easterbook did at former Chipotle parent McDonald's , you're being naive about where the chain was when its popularity and stock peaked two years ago, where it is now, and the realistic potential of where it will be in the future. No one Ells I'm not going to argue that sticking with Ells would've been the right call. Even with this morning's pop, the stock is still 60% below where it was when it hit its all-time high of $758.61 during the summer of 2015. The stock peaked weeks before the first of the food-borne illness outbreaks slammed the brand, and while Ells and his team badly mishandled the situation, it's just the first of the many flubs at Chipotle during the stock's slide. Let's start with the market's chilly reception to the recent queso rollout. How do you blow queso? Chorizo came and went as a new protein option. It lasted less than a year. Last year's three-month Chiptopia rollout was supposed to lead to a permanent loyalty rewards program. We're still waiting. Meanwhile, former parent McDonald's is killing it with its discounts-emitting mobile app. A strong sister concept was supposed to soften the blow when the namesake chain would stumble, but we've seen ShopHouse close up shop , Pizzeria Locale expand too slowly, and Tasty Made debut to reviews so bad that only a Chipotle queso-topped burger would make things worse. All of this -- along with the obvious cratering of comps and contracting margins -- happened under Ells' watch. He had to go. However, expecting a new CEO to fix things by looking things over with a fresh set of eyes is nutso. Chipotle will never be as popular on a unit-level basis as it was two years ago. The chain may have 400 more restaurants now than it did when its stock peaked -- something that may or may not be cannibalizing sales -- but it's not as if giving consumers the integrity-blurring queso that they crave will take comps back to where they used to be. The marketplace has changed. The copycats adapting Chipotle's assembly line and bowl concepts across various fast-casual specialties make the chain less relevant and unique. Outside of the build-a-bowl workshops sprouting up everywhere, you have the better burger and quick-bake made-to-order gourmet pizza places growing at the expense of what was cool circa 2015. Even McDonald's is relevant, and don't tell me that it's a coincidence that the comps turnaround at Mickey D's started in late 2015 just as the store traffic started to head south at Chipotle. What's a new CEO going to do? Is he going to handover company-owned restaurants to franchisees the way that McDonald's has done under Easterbrook? Is she going to dramatically ramp up the expansion of Pizzeria Locale to take advantage of the one hot niche where Chipotle has its foot in the oven door? Chipotle is beyond the point where good-tasting queso or a new dessert item can return the chain to its prime. If it looks in the mirror, it will see how badly it has aged in the past two years. Let's start with the market's chilly reception to the recent queso rollout. How do you blow queso?
Chorizo came and went as a new protein option. It lasted less than a year.
Last year's three-month Chiptopia rollout was supposed to lead to a permanent loyalty rewards program. We're still waiting. Meanwhile, former parent McDonald's is killing it with its discounts-emitting mobile app.Â
A strong sister concept was supposed to soften the blow when the namesake chain would stumble, but we've seen ShopHouse close up shop, Pizzeria Locale expand too slowly, and Tasty Made debut to reviews so bad that only a Chipotle queso-topped burger would make things worse.Â
All of this -- along with the obvious cratering of comps and contracting margins -- happened under Ells' watch. He had to go. However, expecting a new CEO to fix things by looking things over with a fresh set of eyes is nutso.Â
Chipotle will never be as popular on a unit-level basis as it was two years ago. The chain may have 400 more restaurants now than it did when its stock peaked -- something that may or may not be cannibalizing sales -- but it's not as if giving consumers the integrity-blurring queso that they crave will take comps back to where they used to be. The marketplace has changed. The copycats adapting Chipotle's assembly line and bowl concepts across various fast-casual specialties make the chain less relevant and unique.Â
Outside of the build-a-bowl workshops sprouting up everywhere, you have the better burger and quick-bake made-to-order gourmet pizza places growing at the expense of what was cool circa 2015. Even McDonald's is relevant, and don't tell me that it's a coincidence that the comps turnaround at Mickey D's started in late 2015 just as the store traffic started to head south at Chipotle. Â
What's a new CEO going to do? Is he going to handover company-owned restaurants to franchisees the way that McDonald's has done under Easterbrook? Is she going to dramatically ramp up the expansion of Pizzeria Locale to take advantage of the one hot niche where Chipotle has its foot in the oven door?Â
Chipotle is beyond the point where good-tasting queso or a new dessert item can return the chain to its prime. If it looks in the mirror, it will see how badly it has aged in the past two years. A new CEO is necessary, but the reflection isn't going to change.

House price growth at lowest levels since 2013
 The latest housing stats from Halifax have revealed that house prices in the last three months were up 1.7% against the previous three months. This compared to the 2.3% quarterly rate of change in January, and was the lowest since November 2016.
Between January and February, house prices saw a 0.1% increase following Januaryâs 1.1% decline.
According to Halifax, mortgage affordability is significantly better than a decade ago, up by 18 percentage points since 2007. Typical mortgage payments for new borrowers (both first-time buyers and homemovers) at the historic average loan to value ratio stood at 30% of earnings in 2016 Quarter 4Â compared to the peak of 48% in 2007 Quarter 3.
Housing Activity
Total UK home sales on a recent upward trend. Sales in January were 4.9% higher than in December 2016; the fourth successive monthly increase. At 104,820, sales were the highest since March 2016 when transactions were dramatically boosted ahead of the introduction of higher stamp duty rates on second homes and buy to let purchases. In annual terms, sales in January 2017 were almost identical to those in January 2016.
Supply remains very low. The number of properties coming on to the market for sale fell in January after holding broadly steady over the previous three months. This indicator has now failed to increase for 11 successive months. As a result, average stock levels on estate agentsâ books remain close to historic lows.
Housebuilding fell by 1% in 2016. New housing completions in England were estimated at 35,980 (seasonally adjusted) in the final three months of 2016. This was 4% lower than in the previous quarter, and 2% below their level in the same quarter in 2015. Overall, completions in 2016 were 1% lower than in 2015. Completions were 43% above their recent trough in the first quarter of 2013, but remain 26% below their recent peak in the first three months of 2007.
Martin Ellis, Halifax housing economist, said: âHouse prices in the three months to February were 1.7% higher than in the previous quarter; down from 2.3% in January. The annual rate of growth fell to 5.1% from Januaryâs 5.7%, the lowest since July 2013.
Housing demand is being supported by an economy that continues to perform well with employment still expanding. Meanwhile, the supply of both new homes and existing properties available for sale remains low. This combination is pushing up prices.
The annual rate of house price growth has, however, nearly halved over the past 11 months. A sustained period of house price growth in excess of pay rises has made it increasingly difficult for many to purchase a home. This development, together with signs of reduced momentum in the jobs market and squeezed consumer spending power, is expected to curb house price growth during 2017.â
Jeremy Leaf, north London estate agent and a former RICS residential chairman, said: "These figures are interesting as they slightly conflict with the Nationwide survey from a few days ago, although both show a housing market which is broadly stable with prices continuing to be supported by a lack of supply and low interest rates. This reflects what we are finding on the ground.
Looking forward, activity does seem to have picked up a little since the slow start to the year and we hope the Chancellor doesnât do anything to stop the market in its tracks tomorrow and in particular supports first-time buyer activity."
Mark Harris, chief executive of mortgage broker SPF Private Clients, says: "Mortgages may be more affordable than a decade ago, according to the Halifax, but there are still borrowers struggling to get funding, such as older borrowers or the self-employed, because they donât meet lendersâ tougher criteria. There may be a solution out there but advice is more important than ever. The good news is that lenders are keen to lend and continue to offer competitive deals to attract borrowers."
Russell Quirk, ounder and CEO of eMoov.co.uk, had this to say: âIt would seem the cobwebs have been dusted off after the New Year hangover with these latest numbers showing the UK housing market remains resilient and is bouncing back after a seasonally slow start to 2017, reversing the downward trend seen last month.
With prices having increased both annually and monthly, albeit only marginally, it is probable that we will continue to see the property market blossom as we enter into spring, in what is traditionally the busiest time of the year.
However, the continued growth of these numbers could hinge on tomorrowâs budget announcement and whether or not the government decides to actually tackle the shortage of housing in the UK. If they do finally take a step in the right direction price growth could cool to a certain extent, as buyer thirst is quenched with an adequate level of housing stock, although this would be a slow process.
But this is unlikely and relief will probably come in the form of a relax on stamp duty for high-end homeowners which should trickle down to the lower echelons of the market. This ease in market congestion will be as welcome for the average homeowner, as it will be for the beleaguered oligarchs from Marylebone to Kensington Palace Gardens
If this should be the case, the drastic drop in transaction levels seen throughout £1.5m plus market could well be reversed and this additional market activity could further inflate the current market with house prices continuing to increase as a result.â

Caicloud Releases Its Kubernetes-based Cluster-as-a-Service Product (ClaaS 2.0) and the First TensorFlow-as-a-Service (TaaS 1.1), while Closing $6M Series A Funding
SHANGHAI, Mar. 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Caicloud, a Chinese startup that provides Kubernetes-based cluster management service and enterprise deep learning solutions, today announced that it has raised a $6 million Series A funding led by Matrix Partners China with follow-on investments by Cybernaut. This comes after a previous angel investment from Cybernaut in July 2015.

Today, the company also launched its latest Kubernetes-based Cluster-as-a-Service product (ClaaS 2.0). Leveraging the powerful computing framework provided by Kubernetes, Caicloud released the first "TensorFlow-as-a-Service" (TaaS) 1.1 running on top of ClaaS, forming a complete and unique "Cloud + AI" solutions for enterprises.
Caicloud's ClaaS 1.0 was launched in Dec. 2015 and has been seamlessly integrated with most popular public clouds in China and with on-premise infrastructures such as VMware, OpenStack, or bare-mental.
