Your writing is appealing. It's very Lovable considering the weight you put in your words and with your humourous persona. If given the chance I'd like to converse with you to such lengths, it seems as if I can learn from it.
You're very estimable. As such, I'm sure you'd have no problems with my request, atleast I hope you wouldn't. If you do then please tell me beforehand that you're not able to pursue my request.
Savanaclaw, Octavinelle, Scarabia, Riddle, Cater, and Trey relationship hcs with are gender neutral reader who's very intelligent. Knows almost everything, they know various war strategies and languages. Even Morse code, dead languages and sign language. They're over all very strategic but have a very cold personality that closes everyone off. They do so in a very beautiful and elegant manner.
Their significant other of course found this odd until they found out that the reader was actually a war strategist back in their world. Despite being so young, they were talented and the best in all fields.
It's quite a lot though observing and seeing as you like to challenge yourself and push your limits from time to time. Then I hope you wouldn't have a problem.
Thank you for making me come across your writing Chéri
[𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄] 𝐒𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍 , savanaclaw, octavinelle, scarabia, riddle, cater, trey .
› ..essentially [name] is just awesome and cool. gn reader. — oh my goodness gracious tysm?? anyways ignore how this fr took me like a month or two to write… and also pls dont condemn me to hell bc theyre short and i took 90 years to write this. also not proofread
Tumblr media
RIDDLE.
he absolutely 100% would be intimidated at first by your personality, and after finding out who you were back in your world would be intimidated once again, or possibly a little bit threatened? if that adds up help WJFIWJFH
but over all he would still be very impressed by everything
i could be wrong, but i feel that in a way he would be a bit relieved while being in a relationship with someone like this? IDK BUT TO ME IT MAKES SENSE
anyways hed think ur a rule follower and if u r great if not hes condemning you to the 9th circle of hell (i forgor the circles tbh) but fr tho hes stressing already
CATER .
either he does not care abt your cold personality or completely ignores it and tries to post u on magicam because youre just so cool and elegant and awesome and hes BOUND to get sm clout <;3
he probably thinks youre cool tho but its like an act but he is proven wrong 😔
he doesnt even realize he likes u until he discovers your life in your own world and then discovers ☹️ and then he immediately tells u <3 we love a confident man
anyways is a little shocked that u ALSO like him but hey youre his little clout gatherer so its okay and you both blow up on magicam and youre all happy <;3
but fr tho that mf is charismatic so yk damn well he didnt make it awkward.. and he probably uses u for assignments smh poor [name] huh cant catch a break
TREY .
man is in love. how can someone be so mysterious and ELEGANT AT THE SAME TIME ???
call you both jamie and claire from outlander bc its love at first sight i guarantee it
aside from that is he also standoffish? no. did i forget his character writing this? perhaps but will i continue? yes.
like youre all perfect. this man bakes for you. he doesnr even know if you like it but what? he bakes stuff anyways because we all know he would
oh and when he finds out what u were? thats okay he probably doesnt mind and thinks its cool (bc it is)
LEONA .
he would not care…. that is a lie hed kinda care
i think i mischaracterize leona but i also havent played twst recently and forgor 😔 so im sorry for not doing him justice leona stans </33
maybe hed even be a little… impressed
like oh this herbivore did that??? wow. also the way this went downhill from riddle just kinda makes me laugh
he wouldnt be intimidated. just acknowledges youre there and thats abt it tbh. at first bro would probably think ur trying to be edgy but when he finds our hes just like. eh. cool ig and goes back to sleeping or whatever tf he was doing
later on like 4 months into your relationship he realizes that youre like a god for the spelldrive tournament and walks in SHAME for not realizing earlier
RUGGIE .
another man who respects u
admires your smarts… but thinks ur fucking weird like why r u all emo [name] 🤨
then he finds out and hes just all smug like oh guess who MY s/o is, probably saying that ‘my s/o can beat ur s/o in a fight’ like this is middle school and a competition on whose dad is stronger 💀💀
to put it simply you are not like the rest of the s/o’s. you are stronger, you are smarter, you are better. you are better!!
JACK .
MAN IS PROUD
i think
but seriously i think he’d be a little intimidated because who wouldnt right but like when he finds out he is proud. supportive bf and literally best twst character 💪💪
he respects your boundaries. he listens if you wanna talk abt your life back in your world bc why? its jack.
get yourself a jack. ive been saying this but imo? he is perfect <;3
AZUL .
another one that would be incredibly impressed, and would absolutely want to get closer sooner :)
i think he’d be intrigued too as to why ur all cold and like smart as hell
he probably has a mission to find out why and sends out jade and floyd to spy on you smh bad bf behaviour azul
again when he finds out bros impressed. probably determined to change you but that wont work bc it simply wouldnt. pick me behaviour fr fr 😕
hes still ur biggest fan. likes to listen like jack either bc hes interested or using some of ur points to plot his enemies downfall
JADE .
he does not bully you because he has DIGNITY unlike SOMEONE
anyways yet another mf who is interested in u bc why r u so cold [name]? and why do u make it look so pretty and elegant and gorgeous and beautiful when ur like that 🤨
he finds out from like azul or smth and then hes like ‘oh okay :) thats cool’ and carried on with his day
and then he sees u more
and then u see him more
and youre both like damn theyre kinda fine
and then u date
and then youre all happy because its jade. and he enjoys listening to what u have to say from your world and what you do in your world :)
so basically youre all just chillin
FLOYD .
bullies you bc youre emo 😕
and then funds out what you were un your home but then still bullies you 😔😔
he would probably think its like a whole defence mechanism but no bro ur just like that
and he then starts thinking u make it look… pretty
and then he takes like 50 billion years to realize and then youre all like somehow together and then he is like the last one to find out what tf you do and hes bummed 😕
but then goes back to normal and doesnt care
KALIM .
bro is FLABBERGASTED
very impressed like ur THAT smart and cool and awesome???? he is your biggest fan and supporter
and yet another guy who simply ignores your cold ass personality because he probably would
maybe not love at first sight but hes just so amazing i love him sm. so basically before u both get into a relationship you are now his scary dog <3 it all takes time tbh and its all very nice and good 💪💪 best one to date tho lets be real
JAMIL .
his first words for bffr. be fuckin for real when he sees you walk in with your cold ass and elegant person
stage one is denial and he refuses to accept that hes fond of you bc youre kinda cool
but he is kinda interested as to why youre like that… and why youre all smart… like wtf were u before you came here
and then he finds out and is, again, flabberghasted
no that much but did not expect that 💀 like damn alr [name] guess youre cooler than he thought
also became fond of you but went back to stage one bc god FORBID he catches feelings 🥺 for u like he would rather die than admit that tbh
and then he accepts it after like 2 months of pure denial and then boom ur dating and are a couple 💀💀

A Thoughtful Gift. (DWC8-4.)
[Music]
Jack had left the apartment early that day, entrusting that Jade would be fine by himself. The Raven had yet to emerge from his quarters and Jack was confident that he would be back by the afternoon. With Pepper at his side, the mechanical feline trotted happily, traversing with the dragon as he always did. An endless companion for a timeless creature, handcrafted by Darnath himself, Jack was rarely without Pepper in some form or another. Hells, even a feline who greeted Jade with happy meows, unwavered at the heat the man produced.
Tumblr media
Outland was the journey's destination, an old outpost where Ethereals liked to still trade. While Darnath may have been excelling in prosthetics and bringing life into mechanical companions, Jack's tricks stayed closer to his branded 'Ethtech', engineering by Ethereals that he had studied for years before even meeting those in his life today.
The day had been filled with trading and tinkering, gathering the supplies he needed before he was off to Pandaria with Pepper still in tow to head to the Timeless Isle once more. A few weeks there was a mere few hours in the rest of the world, and it would give the dragon time to relax and work quietly by himself.
Each little piece and part was spread out in a familiar cave he and the raven had spent their time in together and one by one, each gear and gadget was placed together, building the perfect shape of something spectacular. Hands became greasy and worn as he worked feverishly for weeks.
Pepper often slept and relaxed nearby, once in a while playing with gears and rivets that rolled around. Jack had begun to wonder if that's what Dar or even Dicenne felt like while working and Jack entertained himself in their workspaces. Such brought a small smile to his face.
Memories flooded his brain during work, some things that he hadn't thought of in a long time, some that he was still angry about, and some that still brought a tint of red to his cheeks even then. He wondered how his friends were doing, those he hadn't seen in ages. Sana, Onyx, Cay... Those important in his life one way or another that he hadn't kept in contact with while 'sorting himself out'. Mayhap a party or a visit was overdue.
By the time he finished his work, Jack packed up the new egg-shaped item and hooked Pepper under his other arm, using a portal to get home once they were clear of the Timeless Isle's magic. He'd set his own companion down and just as he was getting ready to enter, a notification went off on his Tart comm.
Deagra? What did he miss?
"Hey uhh... think I hurt myself a bit in the practice room... little help guys?"
Sent 4 hours ago.
Tumblr media
Furrowing a moment, Jackary chewed his lip at having missed the message and typed a quick reply to the group, balancing the attempt to open the door and carry all of his supplies at the same time. A simple 'Everything okay? Just got this' and a hope that someone had gotten to it already.
Naturally the moment he stepped into his apartment, his nose twitched at the scent of the place. Burnt salt, sugar, cleaning products, baked goods, sweat, and ashes... Whatever had happened in here, he was honestly unsure if he really wanted to know.
"Jade?" As he called out and stepped in, his toolbox was set off to the side, followed by Pepper who went bounding into the house to climb his cat tree, initiating weeks of pent-up ZOOMIES all over the house. The mechanical egg was carried over and when he paused at the cookie plate and note scribbled in front of Darnath's door, a small smile crossed his features. With the same amount of care, the item Jack had been slaving over was set in front of Jade's door before he moved his way into his own room. After all, he certainly needed a shower.

❓Tell me who is your favorite female author and which book do you love the most? I saw that @jemofabook made a stack of her favorite books written by female authors and I decided that I want to share my favorites too. @thefantasyhive is hosting #womeninSFF challenge this June, so maybe this small list can be helpful for someone. I decided to pick 10 of my favorite books(and sometimes even series) written by female writers, without ranking because it's really hard to compare these books: • The Liveship Traders by Robin Hobb • The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb • Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher • Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend • The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart • Piranesi by Susanna Clarke • The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin • A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher • Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling • The Labyrinths of Echo by Max Frei 📚 Also, I have quite a big TBR and I have high expectations of these books, so I'm sharing it too. Would be glad to read your thoughts about them, if you read some books from the list. • The Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty • The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang • The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells • Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones • The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee • Legendborn by Tracy Deonn • A Chorus of Dragons by Jenn Lyons • Outlander by Diana Gabaldon • The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang • A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Sam Heughan On Outlander's Devastating Double Loss
BY JULIE KOSIN
“Murtagh, ugh!” In the midst of a pandemic, Sam Heughan is trying to remain positive—the actor has just completed a social isolation baking challenge with his Outlander cast mates when we hop on the phone to discuss the latest episode—but I've just accused him of emotional manipulation, and I'm well within my rights. Tonight's Outlander offers several tragic beats that would be crushing on their own: Jamie Fraser donning a British red coat to fight against the Regulators; the death of his beloved godfather, Murtagh Fitzgibbons (Duncan Lacroix), in the skirmish history will remember as the Battle of Alamance; and the gruesome discovery of his son-in-law Roger (Richard Rankin) hanging from a tree after crossing paths with the enemy camp.
Heughan loved every minute. "It was my favorite episode," he tells ELLE.com of "The Ballad of Roger Mac." "This was a tough season to break from the book and I think it’s going to be one of our best because of that storyline." Murtagh's death is a controversial storytelling choice; in the Outlander books, the character died years earlier under less dramatic circumstances. But on the show, Jamie and Murtagh are pitted against each other—Murtagh as a Regulator, part of an early group of rebels plotting against British rule in the late 1760s, as Jamie is conscripted to fight alongside the British lest he lose Fraser's Ridge, the land he and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) have built into a bustling settlement in the backwoods of North Carolina. In fact, Jamie's superior has ordered him to find and kill Murtagh, a task Jamie managed to avoid until battle, when another soldier completes the deed with a shot to Murtagh's chest. The Scot dies in Jamie's arms, his last words exactly the same as in the book: "Dinna be afraid, a bhalaich. It doesn’t hurt a bit to die." It's a heartbreak neither Jamie nor book fans saw coming, and one compounded by the strain of losing Roger. "It's a very dense episode," Heughan accedes. "The repercussions are huge for everyone."
Below, Heughan breaks down the process of shooting this episode, what's to come, and how his My Peak Challenge fitness charity is encouraging self-care during coronavirus self-isolation.
Jamie has experienced a lot of grief in the last few seasons. What makes Murtagh’s death different?
It felt [like] the most grief. He's not only losing his godfather—basically a stepfather—but he’s losing the last real contact with Scotland, the last member of his blood apart from his aunt and daughter. It’s very raw—losing that part of his life, the old world and ways of doing things. For Jamie, losing him is like losing his rock, like losing one of his points of safety. There was always this great love between Jamie and Murtagh and it was never spoken of. You just knew Murtagh was always there for Jamie, and likewise.
Jamie’s unwillingness to accept reality is surprising. Everyone can see that Murtagh is dead, but he drags his godfather’s body to Claire and demands she heal him.
I mean, he knows. Of course he knows, but he would do anything to save his godfather, and Claire is the one person who if anyone could do anything, it would be her. He's in all the stages of grief, and then reality dawns on him. It's funny because we shot that as a pickup scene, [so] it’s interesting when it [comes] together. We had to shoot [Murtagh's death] a couple of times because of problems with continuity, so it was challenging to shoot.
You’ve been planning to put Jamie in the red coat for a while—how much of what we see onscreen is what you envisioned when you first pitched it?
It's pretty similar. Before we finished last season I knew Jamie was on the side of the British, and I went to Matt [Roberts, executive producer] and the costume department and said, "Could we put Jamie in a red coat?" Then I went back early to do a fitting for the coat. I wanted Jamie looking good and powerful in it. Everything it stands for is everything he’s fought against—the occupation of Scotland, the suppression of his culture, Blackjack Randall, Wentworth Prison. There’s so much psychologically in this piece of material. Historically, it’s probably not quite accurate—if he was a general in the militia, he probably wouldn't have worn a red coat, but really, it’s less about him becoming a redcoat and more about Tryon testing him.
Did you research the Battle of Alamance before shooting?
It actually wasn't much of a battle—I think the number of casualties were maybe 20 or so. Those words Governor Tryon says, "Fire upon them or fire upon me," is what [the real] Tryon said. We see that he really pushed for this battle. He wanted to be seen as a great general and he wasn't. His men wouldn't fire upon the regulators initially, because they were [basically] the same people.
This episode felt uncomfortably resonant—a federal government turning on its own people in a time of crisis.
Not much has changed, and there are torn loyalties as well. It was the same at Culloden, because you had Scots fighting for the British against [Stuart’s army]. It's [a question of], where does your loyalty lie, and who do you think is going to look after you? A lot of these people were fighting because they needed money. They needed to support their families or they thought they were doing the right thing. It's tough morally.
What was shooting those battle sequences like?
Crazy. I think we shot the main sequence with the cannon in two days. It was summer in Scotland, and we don't generally have a really hot summer, but it was pretty hot at that point. They were tough days. We shot over a number of days in the forest with a second unit, and we all loved being part of that. We haven't seen that type of battle in Outlander, with muskets and guerrilla warfare. It’s very different from the battles we had before. We can see the world is changing, with this new technology and modern warfare.
The final shot of the episode is the family finding Roger hanging. What does this mean for the rest of the season?
The whole family will be hurting. We can see everyone really struggling. The family is beginning to fracture, and that's what the season's really about—they’re torn apart by different circumstances. There's a really fantastic episode coming up, which is quite stylized. When we first read it, we weren't sure how it was going to play out, but I think it really works.
This section of the book is so dark, and now we have Murtagh’s death weighing over it.
Of course there are people that are purists, but it's really great to still surprise the viewer while in Diana Gabaldon's world. We're not changing much. We're adding and layering, and we're back to the status quo now. That character's gone, so we're back to Diana Gabaldon's book, but the Murtagh storyline has definitely added a lot to the season.
Is Jamie hardened at the end of this episode?
I think he's lost something. There's a hole there and it'll take him time. Time is the healer in this one, for all [the characters]. But because of circumstances, he's really thrust into having to be the man of action again and put his family first. By the end of the season, everyone is unsure of the future. They're uncertain of what's going to happen. Even though they have this prior knowledge, they know this great battle is coming. The forecast of the future doesn't look very promising.
You launched My Peak Challenge years ago as a fitness program that helps members get healthy while supporting different charities. How did the social distancing challenge come to be?
We launched My Peak Challenge four years ago and we've been growing—we have ambassadors from every country and they get together and do challenges. Now they've been working out how to do things online, like Zoom challenges. We have a private group where people post about finding mobility and losing weight and gaining strength and confidence and making new friends. And we've fully financed a couple research projects for blood cancer. It’s nice to be able to do something. As an actor,  you feel pretty pointless and hopeless. We're there to entertain, obviously, and to help spread the message, and we wanted to do something with [My Peak Challenge]. It took us about a week to put the videos together, but people seem to really enjoy it, and we want to post more challenges. Hopefully it's helping people stay sane. It's great that people can share it and virtually challenge their friends and family. It should be accessible as well. I noticed a lot of people are putting together these workout series, but I think we beat Hemsworth to it. [Laughs]

People should stop making accusations based on gossip and mean girls talk. People should fact check before pointing fingers.
It looks like Sam had fun making the cake and we had fun with him. Thats all it matters
Also, as a lovely friend observed, that first story with the black and white boomerang of Sam murdering a pineapple, is not a selfie. Just saying. 😏

Outlander: Man of Worth (4x13)
I see that this finale has been kind of polarizing in the fandom, and honestly I don't really see why. If you haven't liked the season thus far, this finale isn't going to fix things. But if you have liked it, then this finale is exactly what it should be to wrap up all of these various story beats. For the most part, I did like this season. That's not to say I don't have my complaints, though... this episode was a bit of a mixed bag, in the same way that a lot of the season was.
Cons:
I will admit that this season has felt the most unbalanced out of the seasons of Outlander we've had thus far. The later books in the series are my favorite - I love spending time at Fraser's Ridge and being around as the Revolution starts to heat up. But the further along in the series you get, the more sprawling these novels become. They're not structured like most novels are. They're very meandering and rich with incident, and it makes for a real challenge in adaptation. I definitely felt that challenge here. The whole season does feel a bit meander-y. They hit all the important plot moments they need to hit, but there's less room for some of this stuff to breathe. Claire herself has a reduced role in this season, and that's a consequence of so much going on. In the books, though, the story just expands to encapsulate everyone and nobody feels diminished. That's not entirely possible in a TV show, though.
Some smaller notes: this season still didn't grapple enough with the issues of race that it presented. We see that Brianna and Phaedra have formed a friendship at River Run, but we don't see Brianna confront the fact that her friend is a slave in any meaningful way. Also, the romance between Murtagh and Jocasta relegates Ulysses to a complete background figure in this episode, which is another significant bummer. Also, as an added consequence of elevating Bree and Phaedra's moments, Lizzie becomes almost completely useless as a character. I feel like for people who haven't read the books, Lizzie is just a non-entity. She's there to muck up the truth for dramatic irony, but she doesn't have a purpose in the show beyond that.
Murtagh and Jocasta. Oy. Let me say this: I don't object to it on principle, but do you know what I would have liked better? Keep the scene where they fight just as it is, and they we cut to Murtagh and Jocasta waking up in bed together, or one of them wakes up and realizes what happened the night before, and has a bit of a "what have I done?" moment? Then, in that final moment, instead of an expression of tender love between them, we get this awkward sort of interplay where neither of them regrets what happened, exactly, but they're not foolish enough to think anything more will come of it, so there just trying to be considerate of each other's feelings. Basically, what I'm getting at is this: I'm cool with Jocasta and Murtagh having sex. I actually think that's pretty hilarious and fun. But suddenly being in love? Nah. I'm not about that. I literally laughed out loud when it panned over Murtagh lounging shirtless in the bed. Pretty sure that wasn't the intended reaction.
I don't blame Roger for punching Jamie, but I did think it was odd how long the scenes of violence went on. There's a lot to cram in to this hour of television, so it felt strange to have these prolonged scenes of Roger beating up Jamie, and Ian going through the gauntlet with the Mohawk. Surely we could have gotten the point with less time spent on showing the violence.
(Also, as a final note, I missed Lord John this week. A lot.)
Pros:
I actually really liked all of the stuff with the Mohawk, from learning the full story of Otter Tooth, to Jamie agreeing to stay with the Mohawk, to Ian stepping in. I thought it was well-paced, well-acted, dramatic, heartbreaking, all of that good stuff. Obviously the real stand-out moment is when Jamie and Ian are saying goodbye to each other. It was heart-wrenching, and the performances made me feel more connected to Ian than I have so far in this show. I also absolutely loved Ian's reaction when he learned he would be made part of the Mohawk. He was so elated, and his big goofy grin just told you that everything would be alright. This was meant to happen for him.
Otter Tooth traveled back in time for much the same reason that Geillis did, to try and save his people. There's an inherent heartbreak to his story, of course, but I like that the Mohawk, or at least some of them, understand that his presence could be regarded as a gift, not a curse. There's a lot of tragedy and complexity to this story, and I felt like the show did a pretty good job with it, despite some of the problems they've had throughout the season with portraying the native characters.
So, when Roger learns the full truth about what happened with Brianna, that she's having a child that might be his and might be Stephen Bonnet's, he hesitates. He doesn't come back to River Run right away, leading Bree to think she's lost him forever. I don't think Roger's hesitation on this account is excusable, necessarily, but I think it makes him a realistically flawed human. We know that Frank Randall loved Brianna as his own daughter, despite knowing the truth about her parentage, we know that Jamie has raised more than one foster child who wasn't his by blood. This story has a lot of complex child/parent relationship stuff baked into it, and here we see that Roger is conflicted, but he comes back to Brianna and makes the right choice - he wants to go meet his son.
The Brianna/Roger reunion was super cheesy, super overblown, and exactly the kind of over-the-top romance that Outlander should include. I'm not going to complain about the cheesiness level. Please. We all knew what we were getting into. I think it's adorable, and I'm glad Bree gets to have her happy ending with Roger. For the moment. And I'm glad Roger has found a way to reconcile all of the torment that he's been through, and come out the other side still devoted to his family. I've noticed people being pretty harsh on Roger as a character, but I personally think it makes sense to show a character handling adversity poorly. Not everyone can pull themselves up by their bootstraps and succeed against all odds. Roger is in over his head for the entire season, and I'm willing to see past a few stumbles.
Once again, I find myself pleasantly surprised by how well Murtagh has continued to fit in to the story. Sure, his romance with Jocasta is a bit much, but the fact that Governor Tryon has come to collect on Jamie's loyalty, and that Murtagh is caught in the middle - I think that's an excellent change from the source material. It's a shortcut that gives personal stakes to Jamie's decision about where his loyalties should lie going forward. Fraser's Ridge has become a haven for Jamie and Claire, but they bought that haven with a promise of fealty to King George III, and the bill has come due. This makes for an exciting jumping-off point for the next installment of the story, and I'm so bummed we have to wait for it!
That's all I've got. I had a lot to say, both good and bad, about this episode, but ultimately I still enjoyed watching it, just like I enjoyed watching the whole season. Now if we could just have a whole show about Lord John Grey please and thanks...

Terry Dresbach has been such a gift to this show ❤️
I'm copying this from DG's Facebook. It's a message from Terry. It's one of the loveliest tributes to Outlander and its characters that I've read. She "gets it." Particularly how she says she had to see them through to Fraser's Ridge. I know there are Terry haters out there. She's straightforward, "dared" to tell the truth of SC's friendship (making her an ES enemy), and she's Ron's wife. I, on the other hand, think she's an absolute treasure. Read what is written below...
Terry Dresback emailed me yesterday to say that while she isn’t normally on Facebook, she’d read all the kind remarks on my page about her work and upcoming retirement as Outlander’s Costume Designer. She asked if I would post something here for her, in reply to such a lovely outpouring of support. Which of course I will:
Thank you Diana. It all started with a book
How many times now have I read Outlander over the past 25 years?
Fifteen, twenty, I’ve lost track.
What you did.
As many of you know, I turned down Outlander in the beginning. I didn’t think there was enough time to do it justice. Ron talked me into just getting it off the ground. That was six years ago. When we started there was nothing beyond electricity in our space. Today, there is one of the most remarkable costume departments in the world.
I was right about time. There was never enough. But once I was in, my inner fan just took over.
It had to be the best I knew how to do. Nothing less would do. That meant 7 days a week, given the size and scope of the show. I won’t lie, it is a grueling show to do. Long hours, hard physical conditions, and a seemingly infinite amount of work to do.
But that inner fan just sits on your shoulder, whispering in your ear. “But this is THAT scene, THAT character, THAT part of the book, you can’t short change it!”
So we went for broke. No detail too small. From designing and weaving the tartans, to the wedding dress, the grandeur of Paris (omg, I did think that might kill me), to Jamie and Claire clutching each other in the sand. Master Raymond, Louise, Murtagh, Geillis, Hugh Munro, Frank, Fergus, Jenny, Ian, Black Jack Randall, Marsali, Ian, young Ian, and all the other characters that fans know and love, because we have read them so many times, they all mattered, they all had to be RIGHT. All of them. Hundreds of them.
These characters were like old friends to me. I KNEW them, and I knew I had to do right by them.
The wedding dress had to be amazing, Jamie and the Highlanders had to spring directly from the earth, Master Raymond had to personify magic and alchemy, Hugh Munro had to have those badges, and Fergus had to become the French son of Jamie (the scarf), Comte St. Germaine had to be impeccably, elegantly evil, Louise had to delight us, and Jenny had to become a sister to all of us, and Frank had to challenge our assumptions.
You never know what is going to end up on camera, when you design a costume, and in the end it doesn’t matter, when you’re doing a show like this. One from the heart and one that speaks to the hearts of so many. You have to create that character that all of us, who are long time fans, who have read the book over and over, can FEEL. Where we can all breathe a sigh of relief, and go, “ahhhhh, look, it’s Claire!!!, it’s Jamie, it’s Master Raymond. I know them!” I didn’t design costumes, on Outlander, I designed people. People I knew intimately. Worlds I knew intimately. Scotland, Paris and America are characters in Outlander. Two centuries and multiple decades.
What I did not anticipate, is that when I looked around me, I would find 20 million fans, give or take a few hundred who think I am a menace, standing next to me, patting me on the back, whispering words of encouragement. Sending me cookies and handmade mittens and scarves, toys for my dog, books to read, handmade quilts, bouquets of flowers if I stumbled or got sick, conversation in the middle of the night...friendship and love.
I have always said, that fans of other shows just tear you apart, but fans of Outlander, bake you cookies!!!!
You all have been incredible, right down to my announcement that it was finally time to step off. I am tired. Really tired. My kids were starting HS when I went to Scotland and one is now in college, one has a year to go. I have missed a lot, and want to live in the same house with them and with my wonderful, wonderful husband.
But I have been moved and inspired by you every day. The love, the support, the kindness and understanding continue. You all were so unexpected and so absolutely amazing. I could work that seventh day because of you. You were always standing next to me inspiring me.
I won’t even talk about the recreation of my designs painstakingly made by fans. I incredibly moved every time I see one of your costumes, a knit bit, a pair of mitts. No award can ever compare.
I know we haven’t done every bit perfectly. I read all the comments, because your opinions are important to me. Sometimes I have made choices that you have hated. That’s okay with me. It is not possible to make every person happy, every single time. But you MUST know, that there has NEVER been a lack of care, a lack of love. About the costumes, or about you. I think I could speak for everyone and say that is the feeling from top to bottom on Outlander, from everyone who works on it.
Anyway, this is getting very long.
There is another season to go. S4. I promised myself that I would get us to America, to Fraser’s Ridge. It is my favorite part of the saga, and I couldn’t leave before the Fraser’s were in that cabin on the Ridge. I think the costumes of S4 will be the best yet. I intend to be around to discuss them with fans, _as always_.
Many of you here on FB don’t follow me on twitter. I wish you would. We have wonderful conversations about the costumes, and about historical clothing in general. It’s like being in a great costume class with all your friends. Come join us for S4. It’s a very friendly place and rarely gets snarky. Sometimes it gets heated, but isn’t that what a good discussion between friends who share the same interests should be?
I am @outlandercostume, and I would LOVE to meet you.
Again, thank you for all of your kind and supportive words. I am not surprised but I am moved, once again. What an incredible bunch you are.
