"Maldición jodido hijo te puta!" Nicki hissed, pulling the alcohol soaked rag from her side to see just how bad the laceration was. The motherfucker had cut her pretty good from her ribs in towards her belly button. Not deep enough to warrant stitches, according to Renee, but it still stung like a son of a bitch. Especially when she was cleaning it, like the good doc had told her to. She ground her teeth and applied the rag once again, biting down to muffle the groan as she waited until she was sure the area had been cleansed so she could apply to butterfly bandages to help seal it.

It took her a bit but she did it and now she was tired. The burn turned into a dull ache once she put her tank top back on and she was determined to relax on her couch, drink her rum and work on sharpening her machete and knife while some old movie played in the background that she had seen enough times to remember what happened. More for background noise than anything else. It would allow her to pass the time as she rested before her next big outing. Whenever the hell that was.

She was midway through cleaning her machete when she heard a knock at the door. Not many people came to see her. She could count one one hand the people that would be stopping by - Ike, Mayra, Ares. Maybe Zack but she wouldn't really count him. He was lobo for a reason. She pushed herself to her feet and opened the door, leaning against it and smirking as she recognized Ike's handsome face. "Well, if I had known you were going to stop by I would have cleaned up a bit," she said, stepping away and moving back into her place. Ike was very capable to close the door behind him. "Any word when you'll be able to get back out there, Papi? Gotta say Ares and Orion are great and all, but raiding with you is much more fun."

Ike may not have thought she needed to thank him, but she felt like she did. It was no secret that the two of them butted heads and while she didn't think he'd be the kind of guy to ignore a little kid wandering near the gates, he could have also as easily passed Henry off on someone else. But she wasn't going to counter him or anything at this point. She could tell that he was pissed at her.

And he had every right to be. She had rushed into a building that wasn't cleared, he was seriously injured and they had barely managed to get out of there without things being a lot worse. There was no doubt in her head that her screw up had set back any sort of progress towards being able to work together civilly.

But still, even knowing that, when he told her he never wanted her treating him again and not trusting her, it felt like she had just been punched in the gut. He was wrong, though, she didn't think he wanted to refuse treatment whenever he came to see her at the clinic. It was that she knew he was always working and always doing what he could to give back to Redwood that she was worried he would make his injuries worse and then they'd lose arguably one of the more important people here in Redwood. But she didn't argue, just swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat and nodded as they got to the gates and she brought the car to a stop. "I'll radio Val to head over to the clinic to meet you," she did say, not looking to Ike, "I'll get someone to help me with the bags."

"I was visiting graves," Ike said, watching the trees go by as Renee drove. First it was pleasant and then it got dizzying so he refocused on the road ahead. "Tristan. Ginny. She was Jewish, may her memory be a blessing. So now Henry knows to put rocks on the gravestones of Jewish people."

Renee thanked him for taking care of her kid, and Ike leaned his head against the back of the seat. "You don't need to thank me for that," he said, as Redwood's guard towers peeped into view in the distance. "He's a child. Anybody would've done it, busy or not. I didn't go out of my way."

Resting his head was a bad idea; he was starting to feel drowsy again. Ike sat up, leaning forward some, and reached out to brace his hands against the dashboard. "When we get in the gates," he said, "I'm gonna get Val to patch me up. I know you think I prefer to refuse treatment, but that's not true. I follow doctors' orders better than most people because I wanna be functional, so I can do my job." He glanced at her and then back ahead.

"I don't want you to touch me, ever again." Ike breathed in and out a few times, steadying himself. "That isn't an emotional decision. I just don't trust you."

THIS IS NO ORDINARY LOVE.

a hand reaches out to take hold of his wrist.  unnatural,  unexplained reflexes.

' please don’t  —  don’t leave,  isaac.  we don’t have to talk about ...  anything.  just don’t leave,  alright ?  ‘  he’s tense,  fingers slipping from isaac’s skin before he’s assured that isaac will stay.  it was the fear that pulled him away,  the never - ending fear of being too much.  it was strange to him,  still.  something that only isaac surfaced within him.  he had never had to apologize to anyone for himself,  especially with isaac by his side.  it seemed ironic to him how much he caught himself wanting to tell him that he was sorry.

he laid back down,  facing towards the ceiling.  a retreat.  isaac could leave if that was what he wanted to do,  though carter doubted he would now.  he was surprisingly  easy  to tether,  which benefited carter’s ego.  it reassured him that he wasn’t as desperate for isaac as he thought.  well  —  he was,  but isaac wanted him by his side as much as carter did.  it balanced it out.  made carter feel less scared.

Renee was more annoyed with herself that she had fallen asleep on the drive there. She had no idea how they had gotten there or even what direction really to go. It was clear she was going to be the one doing the driving but now she had to keep Ike awake, coherent and lucid so he could not only tell her which way she needed to go but to also avoid him passing out and never waking up from the concussion, surely doing a number on him. Renee did her best to keep up with him and on the occasion that he wasn’t paying attention to her, she was carrying the crutches. The doctor side of her was annoyed that she was blatantly ignoring the aids meant to avoid injuring her leg more but she didn’t care. She’d be glad to be rid of them when she got to the car.

In fact, she threw the damn things into the backseat after he put the bags in. She would have left them behind but they were good crutches and someone back in town might need them at one point or another. The second she was free of the crutches she got into the driver’s seat and waited for Ike to get himself comfortable. She would have to move slow and try to avoid jerking the car too much to make it easier on Ike. So she was careful as she turned the car around and drove down the way they came, although soon she would need him to give her directions.

“How far down this am I going?” she asked at first, knowing that she would rather know where she was going first before she got to talking. His question was fair and she sighed heavily, her eyes on the road. “He was….I knew him,” she corrected, her eyes scanning the everywhere to make sure that there wasn’t something out there coming towards them. “Before you make a wise-crack joke about it being someone I used to date or play golf with, no. It was my dad. Which means I guess you were wrong, Ike. Life wouldn’t have been much easier if my dad finally decided to give a shit about his kids.”

Renee was moving towards the door, her one hand holding on to the counters to help hold her up as she walked. She could keep up. Hell, she was sure of it. The inhalers in her bag reminded her of why she was determined to get out of there. Ike appeared again and she was going to assure him that she was fine but he was holding out a set of crutches. Obviously he must have noticed the you’ve got to be kidding me look in her face because he forced them quite literally into her hand. She doubted she would be able to move faster with them but she wasn’t going to argue. He was right - they didn’t have time to argue so she just silently accepted it and tucked them under her armpits so she could move out of the room.

She kept right behind him as they got to the front door and stepped outside. She could feel the heat from the fires on the other side of the building. Remnants from the explosion she heard while she was inside. It must be why the Walkers were ignoring them as they quickly walked back across the greens to the otherside where they had entered. Renee really only used the crutches when her leg felt like it was going to give out but that was it. She was ready to toss the damn things away when they got to the fence but Ike had pushed them through after her. Renee was determined to help him through, holding onto the bag as she sat in the grass for a moment. Walkers were closing in - she could see it through the fence. But Ike was making damn sure that they couldn’t follow. So as he closed vomited she took a rest, looking at the wrapping around her cut. It was definitely soaked through but she could take care of that later.

As soon as Isaac was done throwing up she pushed to her feet. Begrudgingly she grabbed the stupid crutches and was ready to limp after him to their getaway but he was asking for her bag. “You also have a head injury,” she pointed out but she still slid her bag off of her shoulders and held it out to him. “Probably a concussion too. You should probably be moving slow.” But she wasn’t going to force that on him - they wouldn’t be in this state if she hadn’t run off on her own.

Nicki fell into his arms the second he wrapped them around her. She could sense how happy he was to see her. That made two of them. After her conversation with Orion she was in desperate need of something to pull her away from talking to Ares. She was still kind of mad at Orion for getting her to admit her feelings and now, she was quite literally vibrating with nervous energy. If there was one person who was good at helping to dispel that, it was Ike. His embraced helped already, even if she grunted just a little as his arm pressed on the nearly healed scar on her abdomen. “Oh, it’s okay,” she reassured as he started to check her, “You didn’t squeeze me that hard. I would let you see for yourself but there’s too many people around for you to be yanking this dress off.”

She avoided answering him at first about her state. Not because she wasn’t okay because she was okay but because now she believed if she started talking she wasn’t going to stop and then it would wind up turning to the conversation she was actively avoiding - Ares. So instead, she gently took his chin and turned his face so she could look at his bloodied cheek. “I should be asking you that, Papi. What happened and who’s ass do I have to kick?” She didn’t expect him to tell her or if he did that he was going to let her go fight them but she sure as hell was gonna try. Her hand let go when he hugged her again and she draped her hands back around his shoulders.

“You can tell me not to but I’m going to,” she replied with witt in her tone, “but I’ll save it for another time. You can call me whatever you want tonight.” Ike changed their hold and she swayed with him, not letting the music guide her motions because he was absolutely not moving to the beat. No she was moving with him, humming a rhythm that more matched his moves and allowed herself to just be in the moment with him. With him, right now, she could find comfort in him. She knew how he felt about her and what they had. She loved what they had. She loved him. It was a different kind of love. A special, unique kind of love. A supportive love that was so much more deep seated than best friends without the need to be sappy or romantic. It was perfect and clean. Not messy like her current feelings about Ares.

Crap, she wasn’t supposed to be thinking about that. No, she was with Ike right now and avoid thinking about feelings. “Well, I would come see you more often but I know how you feel about people coming over to your place. That and you are spending some happy, quality time with Jemma. Which, by the way, I am very happy for you two. You two are adorable - and if you get to use that word then I do too.” She smirked teasingly as she kissed his cheek. “I missed you too, though.”

Her skin on her back tingles just a bit just from his touch. It was soothing and exhilarating at the same time. She rests her head on his shoulder, savoring the moment. His question makes her laugh under her breath as she nods against him. “I think so, yeah. Although I didn’t feel it when you got that mark on your face.” And hopefully he didn’t feel the crazy swirl of emotions raging through her now. “Why do you ask?”

It had been a disorienting evening, to say the least -- the confrontation with Zack (thorny, tangled-up, another problem slotted into his schedule for pondering over at night when he was waiting for sleep to finally show up), the other kind of confrontation with Lucien (thorny, tangled-up ... etcetera etcetera, a fucking puzzlement) -- and Ike hadn't even gotten all the blood off his face where Luce had marked him before wandering out back into the throng. He wasn't looking for anybody in particular but when he heard Nicki's voice -- it was like coming up out of the water when you were running out of air.

"Sweetheart," Ike said, holding out his hands for her and then wrapping her up in a tight embrace as she kissed his cheek -- the unbloodied one, fortunately. Not that it would've been a first time they'd nuzzled up smeared in their own and each other's blood, but that was under different circumstances. Fights and survival, not parties. It took a second but then Ike gave a little regretful yowl, easing off but still holding Nicki by her sides, ducking his head forward like he could inspect the state of her wounds through her clothes; "You're doing okay? Ahhh, I shouldn't have squeezed you so hard. I don't wanna pop you before you're ready to get back out there."

He embraced her again but more gingerly, pressing a few kisses to her shiny hair. "You look adorable," Ike said, then grinned, "--don't give me any guff about using that word. As if he needed to prove it, Ike tangled their fingers together and pressed against her, making one long line of their bodies, moving not entirely in time to the music but not really paying attention to that. He was quietly feeling for how she moved, whether there was any hitch in the usual fluidity of her muscles, if she froze or hitched because anything started to hurt. "I missed you," Ike said, impulsively. He was saying that a lot, these days, whenever he reconnected with one of his own. But it was true -- it felt true. He'd always been something of a solitary beast but one who liked being around people with the option to slip away. The shift inside him wasn't an easy one and it was happening without Ike willing it to, but this was what it meant. When he wasn't with Nicki, he missed her. When he wasn't with Orion, he missed him.

"You ever think," Ike mused, dancing his fingertips up and down Nicki's spine, "we might be getting kinda symbiotic? Like we all share the same blood supply or central nervous system, or something." He didn't clear up what he was referring to. If Nicki knew what he was saying, that would be proof enough.

No, Ike didn't need to offer any condolences or anything about her father. The man had been dead to her a long time ago. Should she have felt something about the fact her father was now officially dead? Well, probably, but she didn't. She felt nothing and she didn't know if that was a good thing or not. What she did know was she didn't feel sad or guilty. Honestly, she felt relieved. One less family member she needed to worry over.

"I know you didn't," she stated, taking her eyes off the road for just a minute to look over at him. "Henry told me everything. Apparently he was playing hide and go seek and wanted to find the best hiding spot when he found you. And then he told me all about the little magical trip. You found rocks for your friend and that I couldn't know because it's a secret." She smirked a little as she recalled how he seemed quite adamant that he kept a little secret from her. It was cute. "He had a lot of fun. You left quite the impression on him, Big Bird. So much so that he wanted to know if he could go on another rock-picking trip with you."

She let that hang in the air for a minute before she got the point as to why she was bringing it up. "I never did really get to say thank you for finding him and keeping him safe. It really means a lot to me that you went out of your way to do what you did. I know you're a busy man too."

"I don't want to," Ike said. He stared up out of the window, pressing his lips together tight, and then carefully peeled off the cap. It was stuck a little to the blood on his hairline and temple, but not the actual wound, thank god, and he held it loosely in his lap and rested his head against his raised wrist as they drove.

Renee explained about her father, her absent father, her glorified sperm donor, to use Ike's own description of himself. He made a sound in his throat to acknowledge her clarification, not thinking that it required much more from him; all he knew of Renee's situation was what she shared, and he had no reason to contradict her. "Oh-kay," Ike said, when she was done condemning her father. "Then I guess I don't need to be sorry for your loss or nothin'."

He gnawed on the inside of his bottom lip, eyelids starting to get heavy, and gave himself a sharp nip when Renee spoke again. "I didn't hurt him," Ike said, quickly, almost overlapping her. "I wasn't the one who took him anywhere. I just happened upon him. I didn't put him in any danger."

Two hours. That’s how long they had to go to get back to Redwood. The instructions were easy enough to follow. She kept her eyes out for the water tower. After all, she didn’t want to miss the turn. That would cause quite the problem and they had enough problems to deal with currently. She was side-eyeing Ike, making sure that his eyes weren’t drooping and blood wasn’t coming out of his ears. Thankfully, he wasn’t doing either.

“You should probably take the cap off,” she said without looking, “The material might irritate the tissue.” If he decided not to, then that was fine. She wasn’t going to force him or anything. She could only suggest as a medical professional what was best and while she knew that it would be much better to take the hat off, it wasn’t really a necessity.

It wasn’t like she had much room to talk. Not after he told her to clean the cut on her leg and she had most certainly not done that. If she wasn’t worried about Ike’s head and losing him along the way back, she would have pulled over and taken care of it. She was pretty sure the rag was soaked through at this point, but it could hold a couple of hours.

“No,” she replied, a slight shake in her head as she did pull her eyes over to him for a moment before gluing them back on the road ahead of them. “No, that would have required him to pick up the phone.” There was a hint of bitterness in her tone. “Last time I saw him was when I got married to Andy, and even then I could have cared less if they had shown up. You want to talk about a glorified sperm donor, that was the kind of man my dad was. Parading me and my sisters around like trophies…..he didn’t know the next thing about being a parent.”

Renee glanced at Ike again out of the corner of her eye, watching him for a minute. “You know, Henry told me about the little field trip around the farm that you and him went on.” She was curious what his reaction to it would be.

"You'll reach a water tower in about forty minutes. Turn left there and then it's another hour till home."

Ike had his elbow against the open windowsill, clasping the roof of the car, so the wind could hit his face as they drove. There was a definite chill already and he was desperately glad for it; any warmth at all and he'd be falling asleep. He considered taking off the stocking cap but the thought of his scalp coming unglued and flapping in the wind was too horrific even if it was just his feverish imagination of the worst possible scenario.

The blood drying on his face was tight in places, prickly, and that discomfort helped too. It was small enough to be acute, unlike the bigger throbbing places in his head and body. Renee was saying something; Renee was answering his question, seemingly thinking that Ike's major concern at the moment would be ... mocking her, or throwing something in her face. Ike absorbed that, let it sink in. That was what she thought of him. All right. He had a good memory, and he'd remember that for the future.

"Did you know your father was living there? In that gated community?" He reached forward to open the glove compartment, sifting around until he found a ball bearing he remembered being in there, and tucked it into his mouth, clicking it around and around to stimulate some kind of saliva. All he tasted was the after-sear of the bile he'd thrown up.
