Hi, Tumblr queer users (so, like, Tumblr users in general) and horror fans in particular.
I bring you a Spanish movie for your consideration: Una Ballena (A Whale). This is an intimate, almost cosmic-y, horror movie made by Spanish filmaker Pablo Hernando.
It tales the intertwined stories of Ingrid (a young profesional assassin with a certain ability of dissappearing without a trace...) and Melville (an old dealer or something a teeny tiny bit more bizarre than antiquities, drugs or regular weapons), constructive a narrative that is not always straight foward but yet clearly going to a very particular place...
...and I cannot say more without spoiling it. Only: yes, this has GOOD queer rep (not to mistake with queer rep necesarily by having good people being the queer characters) and a FUCK FASCIST quite literal message.
The visuals are GORGEOUS and every technical aspect from acting to soundtrack is an eleven out of ten.
Please, find it andgive it a try, you won't regret it.

Tilting at Windmills with Don Quixote, Or, A Meditation on Spanish Herbals
Illustration by Octavio Ocampo I’ll confess something here: until just recently, I never read Don Quixote, except for snippets here and there. No, thanks to the preferences of my Spanish professors, instead I spent days swooning over the lyricism of poets Federico García Lorca and Pablo Neruda or stumbling through conquistador Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s account of Hernando Cortés’s conquest of…

I've got a very mixed relationship with TV Tropes. They banned me twice for no real reason, but I can't stop admiring their archive of tropes. This is what a work page for my "Encanto" fanfic, "Cracks in the future", would look like. (Some of these tropes also fit the canon characters in the movie.) This fanfic is set in an alternate universe, where Bruno has a wife (Míriam) and two kids (Teresa and Víctor).
A - L
Adaption Personality Change: Downplayed. There's a bit less emphasis in this fic on the weirder things, that Bruno will do in the movie. This is partly because most of it is told from Teresa's point of view, and she's a Daddy's Girl who won't find him strange. But it helps as well that he's happier in this fic than in most of the movie, and it makes his anxieties less pronounced and easier to control. That said, it is made clear that Bruno still manages to weird other people out. Abuelo Gonzalez (his father-in-law) actually wonders if he's "right in the head", and Pablo is forced to admit that he can see why people would find him "odd". But still, while Bruno is likely to cover his face with a hood if he's out in public, except if Míriam is there to pull it down, he will never wear a bucket over his head here. And he still has rats as pets long before it would be seen as normal, but his two alter egos Hernando and Jorge are never mentioned at all in this fic. And even him being superstitious is only mentioned exactly once.
Adaptional Angst Downgrade: Bruno is generally much happier in this fic than in most of the movie. It is true that he still deals with the pressure from his mother, and with a bunch of judgemental villagers. But it's noted that him meeting Míriam has improved his life a great deal. He never hid from his family for years either in this fic, since he could talk to his wife about his visions and had two kids to raise. Bruno and Míriam decided to simply not reveal what he saw in Mirabel's future. That made his mother furious with him, but he didn't have to become a hermit…
The Alcoholic: Tía Malena's husband Enrique is described as a violent drunk, and nobody in Malena's family likes him.
All Work vs All Play: This is what Míriam and Malena were in their younger days. Míriam preferred to stay at home and help their parents in their shop, but Malena would be out dating different guys instead.
Almighty Mum: When a bully's father is about to start attacking Bruno's door, Bruno can't do much except take his crying wife into his tower, and tell his kids to go to their rooms and hide there. And as soon as the man attacks the door, what saves the situation is that the door gives the attacker an electric shock, and that Abuela Madrigal arrives and tells him and his wife off. They try to make it look as if everything is Bruno's and Teresa's fault, but that doesn’t work at all. Abuela Madrigal only tells them to leave. And naturally, they must obey her. * As a matter of fact, people respect Abuela Madrigal so much that Teresa can use it. She learns that if Pablo's father keeps on slandering her and her father, her bringing up her abuela is the only way to make him stop.
Ascended Extra: Bruno has never hidden from his family for a decade in this fic, where he becomes the beloved father of protagonist Teresa. So he naturally has lots of screen time here, that he didn't have in the movie.
Awful Wedded Life: Tía Malena is clearly unhappy with her marriage to Enrique, who's described as a violent drunk who nobody in Malena's family likes. Also, Pablo reveals to Teresa that he wonders if his parents even still like each other. Both of these cases are in contrast to the three happy Madrigal marriages.
Bespectacled Cutie: Mirabel happens to be the only family member except for her father, who needs to wear glasses. She's also the only Madrigal kid to have no gift and struggles with that.
Beta Couple: Julieta and Pepa are already dating Agustín and Félix respectively, when Bruno and Míriam get together in the first chapter. It is later revealed in the second chapter, that Julieta and Pepa are planning triple dates. And later on in the story, the three couples have been married for 22 years and are still friends. * Dolores and Mariano become this to Teresa and Pablo by the end of the story. It is a case though, where the Betas get together later than the Official Couple, since everyone had just expected Mariano to propose to Isabela, while Dolores had hidden her feelings for him.
Big Sister Instinct: Teresa manages to save Víctor from a group of mean bullies, and it's revealed that Pepa used to do the same thing for Bruno.
Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Abuelo Pedro was killed during an attack right after his kids were born.
Bookworm: Bruno is hardly fond of being out among people in public, but he will still take his family on regular visits to the local library. It is noted that he was an avid reader as a young man. So now, it is important to him to encourage his kids to read. And it worked especially well with Víctor, who loves to go to the library. However, Teresa will borrow a book or two as well.
A Boy, A Girl, And A Baby Family: Dolores is 21 years old, Camilo is 15 years old and Antonio is the baby of the family at five years old.
Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Bruno becomes a downplayed example when Teresa meets Pablo. Bruno is clearly uncomfortable with it, but he still is more nervous than aggressive. And he doesn’t have anything bad to say about Pablo, he is even able to apologize for acting weird, and acknowledge that Pablo is the first person who isn't a family member, who will respect him. As soon as Teresa asks her parents if she can bring Pablo to her room though (she promises that they'll only talk, but they would be alone together in her bedroom), Bruno has to warn him that he can't do anything "improper" to her.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Downplayed with Bruno and Míriam as he is as gentle to her as she is to him. They were also both lonely before they met each other. However, Bruno was extremely unhappy until then. And he still has his anxieties and a bad reputation. Míriam managed to see that he wasn't dangerous though, even if she was the only girl in the Encanto to be willing to date him. Nowadays, it is her job to help him deal with whatever his problems are… * Pepa and Félix are a gender-inverted example. She is very hot-tempered and overly emotional, and it became his job to calm her down (and it's a very important job, since Pepa's mood controls the weather in the Encanto).
The Bully: A gang of them attack Víctor in an alley before Teresa can stop them. One of the bullies who insults their father gets what he deserves though… * It is revealed that Bruno also was attacked by bullies when he was younger, and that Pepa had to strike them in their heads with lightning.
Bumbling Dad: Mirabel's father, Agustín, is clumsy and always attracts bees, but he does love his wife and his daughters dearly and will do anything for them.
Canon Foreigner: Míriam, Malena, their parents, Teresa, Víctor, Leonor, Pablo, Pablo's family and Enrique are all characters, who don't appear in the movie.
Clashing Cousins: Teresa and Isabela are never able to get along. But then, Teresa suddenly has an epiphany that Isa almost accepted a loveless marriage. And it makes her feel sympathy for her at last…
Daddy's Girl: Teresa is very devoted to Bruno and won't let anybody insult him (and that is what most of the villagers do). She is very adamant about assuring that he's right about all of his visions. Her theory is that she got the same gift as him for this reason: Since she loves her father so much, she can't imagine having a different gift…
Demoted To Extra: This happened to several of the characters from the movie. Mirabel is Teresa's best friend and still an important character, but she's not the protagonist and will not appear in every chapter. And as much as Julieta, Pepa, Agustín, Félix, Camilo and Antonio are still there, they only get a few lines each. When it comes to more minor characters from the movie, like the kids who pestered Mirabel, Señora Pezmuerto and Señor Flores, they are still around as well, but they're not named and don't get any lines. Osvaldo Orozco Ortiz is an aversion though, as he is in the spotlight in one scene.
Disappeared Dad: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life to save all the other villagers, when they were attacked when his three kids had just been born. Not only did this traumatize his wife Alma (a k a Abuela Madrigal), but it's clear that Bruno (who was the only boy) also struggled a lot as he didn’t have a father. * Nobody has ever found out what happened to Teresa's cousin Leonor's father. He seems to have just disappeared one day. So he must have either been killed, or he found some way to leave the Encanto and abandon his pregnant fiancée.
Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Mirabel and Dolores end up with this dynamic, when they're in the same scene together. Mirabel is very bubbly and talkative, Dolores is calmer and much quieter.
Fiery Redhead: Tía Pepa is red-headed and really hot-tempered. Her mood is what controls the weather in the Encanto.
Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Míriam had become the responsible sister, who preferred to stay at home and help her parents in their shop. Malena would be out dating different guys instead. Even as they've reached their middle age, Míriam is Happily Married and described by Teresa as a perfect wife and mother, while Malena is stuck with a violent drunk and is very jealous of her sister.
Freudian Trio: The three middle-aged women in the Casita form a trio like this. Pepa is really hot-tempered (the Id), Julieta is the calm and responsible sister (the Superego), while Míriam does her best to be the perfect wife and mother, but she can still start crying and lose her temper (the Ego). * This is true for their husbands as well. Félix is jolly and extroverted (the Id), Agustín is calm and more composed (the Superego), while Bruno is introverted, but will often show emotions like sadness and anxiety and shame (the Ego). * And naturally, this is true with the triplets too, with Pepa as a hot-tempered Id, Julieta as the calm Superego and Bruno as the introverted but nervous Ego.
Generation Xerox: Míriam got really scared the first time she saw Bruno's eyes glow green, and it made him plead with her to not leave him. Years later, this is repeated but gender-inverted with Teresa and Pablo. He is very startled when he sees her eyes glow green, and it makes her plead with him to not leave her. * Pablo's mother says that Teresa reminds her of her mother though. But later, Pablo reveals to Teresa that her eyes will look sad even when she's smiling. And that's a trait, that she's apparently inherited from her father. * Víctor is very much like Bruno, which has become notable to lots of people. Both of them are described as having a melancholy and nervous personality. Their pictures that hang next to Abuela Madrigal's door are nearly identical. Both of them are also into writing stories and theater and have rats as pets. * But a lot of this might go back one more generation. As soon as Pablo sees a painting of Abuelo Pedro, he says he thinks that Bruno looks a lot like him. Bruno and Víctor are also implied to have inherited their writing skills from him.
Generational Trauma: Abuela Madrigal watched her husband get killed during an attack. And it made her think that her kids and grandkids have to work hard, and produce new generations of Madrigals, so the magic and their protection from new attacks will stay strong. But it makes her do things like allowing the villagers to slander Bruno, pushing Mirabel to the side until she feels unloved, pressuring Isabela to think that she must enter a marriage that she doesn’t want, and Luisa to think that she has to work hard until she almost burns herself out. Teresa is mostly left alone until she meets Pablo. But then, Abuela Madrigal makes it clear that she wants great-grandkids. It is only after the Casita crumbles and the magic is lost, that a healing process can begin…
The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Míriam and Malena have a responsible vs irresponsible divide, and not a smart vs pretty divide (even if Míriam is the wiser out of the two, and Malena is described as having been the more popular sister). But still, Malena seems to see her whole life as just a competition with Míriam. Malena is very bitter and jealous since Míriam has a better life than her. * Mirabel and Isabela are unable to get along, and Mirabel and Teresa love to mock Isabela for being so haughty. But they can reconcile after Isabela reveals her secret: she was only going to marry Mariano to please Abuela Madrigal.
Glowing Eyes: This is what happens when Bruno or Teresa looks into the future. Their eyes will glow green.
Good Parents: Teresa and Víctor feel that Bruno and Míriam definitely are this. Teresa adores her father and admires her mother, just as much as Víctor adores his mother and admires his father.
Green Thumb: Isabela's power is that she can grow plants out of nowhere.
Happily Married: Teresa is glad that she grew up around three happy marriages (Bruno/Míriam, Pepa/Félix and Julieta/Agustín), but she can also describe her abuelos as being devoted to each other…
Hidden Depth: Even if Teresa didn't quite agree with Mirabel that Mariano was a "dumb hunk", she is very surprised when she learns that he's a poet.
Honorary Uncle: This story has an inversion. Normally, Teresa and Víctor would have called Tía Malena's husband "Tío Enrique". But nobody in Malena's family likes him because he's a violent drunk, so nobody has taught Teresa or Víctor to think of him as their tío. He is therefore referred to as just "Enrique".
Housewife: Zig-zagged with Míriam. She devotes a big chunk of her life to just taking care of her husband and her kids, and that is clearly what she wanted. However, she likes to run her family's shop too after she gets a chance to do so. Still, she is ready to stop working there after the magic returns.
I Am Not Pretty: Teresa is very surprised when Pablo actually calls her pretty. What she thought was that Isabela was the pretty one.
I See Dead People: Víctor's power is that he can both see and hear the spirits of the dead.
I Want Grandkids: Actually, Abuela Madrigal is pushing for great-grandkids now. This is very justified though since she believes that if the Encanto will survive, there must be new generations of Madrigals to keep the magic strong.
In-Series Nickname: "Mira" for Mirabel, "Isa" for Isabela and "Juli" for Julieta. Antonio and Pablo are called "Toñito" and "Pablito" by their respective mothers. * As a way more negative example, Bruno is known as "Bad Luck Bruno" among the villagers. It is even used by his brother-in-law Enrique, but he's not portrayed in a positive light anyway.
Jacob and Esau: Pablo is clearly his mother's favorite, and Pablo is convinced that his brother Manuel is their father's favorite.
The Jinx: Most of the villagers consider Bruno as one of these. They think that not only can he see the future, but he will make all kinds of bad things that he sees happen. Teresa is later accused of causing an elderly woman's death as well…
Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Mirabel and Dolores swapped their mother's roles. Mirabel is bubblier than Julieta, while Dolores is quieter than Pepa.
The Lost Lenore: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life during a war. That is when the miracle was born, but it has truly traumatized his wife, Alma, who saw it happen in front of her eyes. As the years went by and she became best known as "Abuela Madrigal", she started to put a lot of pressure on her kids and grandkids. She thought that this was the only way to keep the magic strong, and it would give them protection from new attacks…

youtube
link https://youtu.be/bjebjMIeEQw

Encanto OC Event Week 3: Efecto Mariposa. One Family

(Cute inspiration about the twins when they're kids. Alejandra's inspired from Bingo Heeler from Bluey and Francisca's from movie version of Matilda Wormwood.)
🎶Bruno married Mercedes. Now they're expecting 2 babies. And that's how Abuela became an abuela! Let's go! Let's go! 🎶
Mercedes, like canon, spends her pregnancy nauseous and achy. Thankfully Julieta's cooking helps. Even Bruno gets up and makes simple food for his wife. He showers her belly with kisses and gentle taps for good luck. Pepa makes baby blankets. Casita creates a nursery in Bruno's room. Alma's excited to have a new generation who'll make the family stronger. When Mercedes suggests the name Alejandra for a girl, Bruno instantly loves it. He also loves Francisca if they have another. He thinks it's the perfect name for a fearless hero in a telenovela. They come up with Horacio and Inigo for sons. (Their middle names would be Pedro and Armando in honor of their fathers.) Interestingly, Horacio means "Timekeeper" and Inigo means "Fiery."😉
In May, Mercedes feels the beginning of labor late at night, but the contractions are far apart. She doesn't worry remembering how her mother's labor went with her half-sister. Pepa, Julieta and Alma are further in town the next morning. Instead of being alone, Bruno's there the whole time providing comfort. The rest of the family arrives just in time as labor gets stronger and Mercedes's water breaks! Then it gets crazy. Bruno's pushed out of the room. Pepa can't control her worry which causes a storm. Alma's frustrated and takes Pepa out to calm down. Julieta's keeping her cool the best she can. She's helped with deliveries, but she's nervous doing it for her sister-in-law. Bruno can't take it and tries pushing the door down, until Casita lets him through. He's there for the delivery of his daughters. With happy tears, he holds Francisca and washes her while Mercedes delivers a breech Alejandra. The family is overjoyed with two babies. Alma holds back crying, wishing Pedro was there. That night she checks on Bruno and quietly sobs. In the warm candlelight, he's snuggled with his wife and twin daughters; arms protectively around them. It's a bittersweet moment for Alma, but reassured knowing this won't end in tragedy.
Bruno and Mercedes share all the responsibilities of raising the twins. They change diapers, handle colic and crying fits in turns. Mercedes has a hard time nursing and worries she's failing as a mother. Bruno encourages her and stays up for late night feedings. Once she gets the knack of it, he savors watching. It fills his heart in a way he can't describe seeing his wife nurse their children. They develop a favorite nursing position. Cuddled in bed, Mercedes holding one, Bruno holding another against her breast and his free arm draped behind his wife. Their heads gently nudged so Bruno can whisper to Mercedes that he's proud and loves her so deeply.
Julieta and Pepa love being aunts. They spoil their nieces with hugs and smooches. Alma savors being an abuela and watching her grandchildren grow. Bruno's over the moon, the stars and beyond. He doesn't do visions as often and spends any free time with his babies. Even after a terrible day, he feels better seeing them. His favorite thing is to lie in the hammock, twins against his chest and softly tell stories. Their mostly about Mercedes. So we know how the twins were with their mama. How about with their dad? Since Bruno and Mercedes have a healthy marriage and truly love each other, it makes an impact on the twins' lives compared to Mercedes being with Pablo. As they grow, they can talk to Bruno about anything because he's understanding. There's no favorites or expectations.
Alejandra is Bruno's shadow. They love playing make believe games. She's a pile of giggles when Hernando and Jorge show up. She even tries her own versions with her blanket and mixing bowl. When Bruno has to leave for visions, she'll say "Don't worry Papi. All good visions today." When he comes back after a bad day, she'll say "Knock on wood Papi. Tomorrow's better." When she's scared around new people, she'll hide under his ruana. She'll do it trying to surprise him and Bruno plays along wondering where she went. She loves the rats and treats them like babies.
Francisca's still antisocial, but she bonds with Bruno. He actually sees her for who she is and does what she likes compared to Pablo. He reads with her and challenges her with puzzles/riddles. He draws with her while she learns sketching. Bruno's unbothered that she's not a hugger. She learns to write fast and leaves notes to the family about how she loves them. Bruno finds them on his desk and vision cave. Speaking of which, Francisca prefers watching his visions. She's not afraid of them and is curious how they work. She's more patient with animals and doesn't mind Bruno's rats. She can be arrogant, but gently reminded to be humble.
Mercedes and Bruno usually spend Saturdays outside with the girls. Going for long walks, playing in streams and having picnics. If the girls are sick or having nightmares, they're allowed in their bed. Francisca learns the piano young and she has concerts for her family (and the stuffed animals.) Alejandra makes bracelets and necklaces for everyone. For one of their parent's wedding anniversaries, the girls say they have to marry. (They're 3 then.) Mercedes and Bruno comedically reenact they're wedding ceremony. The next year, the girls do a play how their parents met. If Bruno's had a lot of visions requests, he has to deliver vision tablets to townspeople and the girls go with him. Sometimes together or just one. The deliveries aren't as tense with them. Some people have a better reign on their reactions when his children appear. Bruno's eternally grateful for his family and he'll do anything to make sure his daughters don't struggle like he did. He and Mercedes are going to have a major challenge when they get their gifts.
(I think I'll save the rest after the Encanto OC Event. My brain's tired sorting this all out. 😅)

REYES FAMILY HISTORY RE: CRIME.
FROM 1948 TO 2020, an overview.
— though the reyes’ drug enterprise really started with hernando, marcelo’s grandfather, the groundwork for the family’s criminal endeavors was laid by the political context of the time. hernando saín reyes corzo, was born on 1928 to farmhands laureano and guadalupe, in rogache, antioquia. up until that point, the family led mainly unassuming lives, and outside of a certain authority and social influence granted by their long history in rogache, they lacked any sort of true wealth.
hernando himself was set to become a coffee farmer just like them, but instead he grew entangled in a much more lucrative (at least in his eyes) trade. it was in his late teens that he began to work for small-time marijuana and coca farmers, learning the production side of things, and earning money on the side alongside his older brother gonzalo and family friend pablo loaiza.
— in 1948, the conflict that came to be known as la violencia in colombia was set in motion due to the assassination of an influential leader of the liberal party, which had been orchestrated by the conservative establishment. this is relevant, given that pablo loaiza’s father, alfonso, was friends with hernando’s parents, and they were not only some of the most respected people in the small town, they were also well-known gaitanistas, which is to say, they were supporters of the liberal party, especially of jorge eliécer gaitán’s leftist revolutionary faction. in rogache, they had attempted to unionize the farmers in the past, to much heated backlash from the medellín-based landowners they worked for. this made them key targets in the ensuing conflict.
— the reyes, the loaizas and others, emboldened by the actions taken during the bogotazo, as well as the subsequent civil unrest presented in medellin, redoubled their efforts as they started to face persecution. while the parents collected alliances with other lower class families, the children acted. naming their budding union grupo desgüezo, they began to engage in banditry: targeting landowners and business owners in the region and sacking them, plundering them, kidnapping them for ransom or occasionally assassinating them if they failed to comply. they also engaged in conflict with armed groups of conservative sympathizers. simply put, it was civil war, unofficial, asymmetrical and violent only in short, red bursts. it’s during this ten year period that hernado became sangrenegra, gonzalo became garulla, and pablo became mirús, monikers given to them by the townsfolk and people they helped with their robin hood-esque exploits.
because it must be mentioned: beyond the connected histories of their families, the reyes and loaizas also had another thing in common: both bloodlines were gifted — reyes being werepumas, loaizas being werejaguars. they naturally had a vested interest not only in keeping their territory, but expanding it. they not only killed landowners, they reclaimed the land, either for themselves or giving it back to impoverished groups that they took under their protection.
— in 1954, laureano and guadalupe reyes were killed by gunfire during a midnight raid to the family home in rogache, while gonzalo and hernando were at a party on another side of town. the house was plundered and subsequently set on fire with the bodies still inside. it’s suspected this was done by conservative guerrillas or hired mercs, or a combination of all of these, since alfonso loaiza was also abducted the same night.
the retaliation was swift and blunt: all known conservative paramilitary and bandit groups surrounding rogache were tracked and targeted the following days with systematic, meticulous violence carried out both in the town and in the surrounding antioquean wilderness. guerrilleros were not only shot dead, they were literally torn to shreds. alfonso loaiza was successfully extracted, and these factions were wiped out from the map, with only a few select survivors left to act as warnings. conservative sentiments in rogache and surrounding towns dwindled to a practical halt after this event.
— in the newly assumed territories, life carried on, and rogache continued to produce quality coffee, yuca and plaintains under gonzalo reyes’ supervision. so long as a small tribute was paid to the reyes family, who oversaw the protection of the town, families in rogache were allowed to keep most of their earnings.
— hernando was still very interested in weed growing and distribution and the effects of coca leaves, and he and pablo invested in it. by the time the 60s rolled around and la violencia officially concluded, they were the major producers of marijuana in antioquia. on the other hand, hernando had had three children with esperanza alarcón, who had become his wife: jesús álvaro (1950), marcelo amador (1952) and ysmael eliécer (1955). though both he and esperanza were from rogache, hernando had decided the best thing for his children was to live in medellín. the specifics of this story, as well as hernando’s relationship with esperanza, will be explored in a separate installment.
— the reyes didn’t get involved into cocaine production and distribution until the early 70s. through the 60s, hernando had a profitable income growing weed in rogache and surrounding towns and dispersing it through the country and eventually distributing it into america. they also had legitimate income in the form of the CACI, or the antioquean coalition of independent farmers, which would carve a place for itself amongst all the other foreign and local food distribution companies. at this point, the reyes were considerably wealthy and significantly powerful, but they were yet to become household names. it didn’t help that by 1964, gonzalo reyes had disentangled himself from any criminal activity to handle legitimate income only, as a primary member of CACI’s board.
— all this being said, when coke became a thing, hernando already had a head start; he and a few other like-minded individuals designed the air and sea routes that were used to get weed shipments into miami, and that eventually would be used to pump america’s east coast with large amounts of cocaine. the reyes started implating south florida’s coasts with even more men and women willing to seize control of the city, and even more conflicts with local gangs started to sprout. at the same time, more air planes and air strips were bought.
— in the 70s it was made official, and the dorados cartel was established. hernando was far from the unique ringleader, and the dorados cartel was far from a centralized organization. rather, it operated as a tight group of independent criminal organizations that operated under their own bosses, which in turn operated under a “board of directors”, all which made it harder still for law enforcement to truly eradicate them.
— the board of directors had eight members. hernando was one, and pablo was another. diego sepulveda, a puerto rican familiar with both mexican and caribbean pipelines, was another. for them, production, control of transportation and distribution was key, so they poured resources into making sure the product passed through the pipeline without a hitch. alliances with gangs in the caribbean were formed.
— they were the top producers through the 80s, and most of the other cartels simply could not compare when it came to the amount of product they were pushing. the dorados sold it at street level throughout south florida but also sold it in bulk to other organizations, most notably the italian mafia groups peppered through the states. if you wanted to get a good product, you simply went to the dorados.
— in the 90s, the relationship between the dorados and the marconi crime family was strengthened by the marriage of ysmael reyes and gianna marconi, as well as the subsequent birth of their child, marcelo giancarlo reyes marconi, in 1993. ysmael, who was in his late thirties by then, had become a very efficient hitman for the dorados, and gianna was the caporegime for the marconis in brooklyn.
— unfortunately, it was also in the 90s that the dorados started to experience a slight decline to their power. this was due to the string of DEA-led arrests that characterized the decade: many of their mid-level personnel got caught or killed, and eventually two of their board members met the same fate too. a particularly rough hit was the death of hernando reyes in 1999, leaving leadership with only three of their original members.
— los dorados have gone through significant periods of transformations. though they are not as great as they once were, they remain formidable: they still control a lot of the cocaine production that goes on from antioquia to perú, and the CACI has now become a signature part of the national conomic landscape, as well as one of the biggest and best importers of tropical fruits and coffee, marking it one of their most important legacies.
— by 2020, daniela reyes valenciano has been part of the dorados’ board for exactly ten years, following ysmael reyes’ disappearance in 2010. diego sepulveda remains her closest ally, alongside jorge loaiza, the son of pablo loaiza. though they still dabble in street-level sale, especially in miami, they’ve remained prominent at the production level, selling to mexican cartels, the russian mob, and gangs throughout america.

Casa Ayala y su entorno*
DetallesCategoría: La voz silenciada Publicado: 04 Diciembre 2006 Visto: 9079

Part 2: Making Friends?
(Warning: Ace gets slapped and nutcrackered.)
§§§§
Waking up at her usual time of 4:30 am, Kayla made her way downstairs to see that the teachers and staff, minus Crowley, were in the foyer admiring the fixed dorm. She saw Professors Divus Crewel and Mozes Trein, Coach Ashton Vargas, and Sam the Owner of Mr S's Mystery Shop, plus a few others. Vargas noticed her and got the attention of one of them, a male with gray-streaked brown hair wearing a blue button-up and black pants with brown loafers and a white doctor's coat.
Blue Doctor: Are you alright? No fevers, aches or pains?
Kayla: I'm okay, but who are you?
Blue Doctor: Oh right. Dios, I can be estupido. My name's Julian Cortez. I'm the school nurse.
Nurse Cortez: The red-head in yellow is my brother Pablo Cortez, the school's handy man.
Pablo Cortez: Hola.
Nurse Cortez: The guy in the green robe is our baby brother Hernando, he teaches Divination.
Professor Cortez: Don't be afraid to come to me if you have questions about any weird dreams you have.
Nurse Cortez: The young man in the purple tank top and dirt-stained jeans is my eldest son Iginio, the botany teacher and head gardener.
Iginio Cortez: Hey.
Nurse Cortez: The big muscled male is my middle son Luis, the nutrition counselor.
Luis Cortez: (grumbles angrily about how no one comes to him for advice)
Nurse Cortez: And last is my youngest son, Marco. He's the one wearing big green glasses. He teaches elemental spell work.
Marco Cortez: Hi.
Pablo Cortez: (claps a hand on the shoulder of a dark-skinned male about Iginio's age wearing a yellow shirt with music notes on the sleeves) This here is my son, Diego. He's the music teacher.
Diego Cortez: (softly) Hello.
Kayla: Buenos dias.
Professor Trein: You speak Mystiqel?
Kayla: Mystiqel? What's that?
Coach Vargas: The native language of Hispanola, the Cortez family homeland.
Kayla: Ah. The equivalent in my former world is called Spanish. I'm a polyglot, meaning I can speak multiple languages. I'm going to have to get a list of the languages here so that I can compare them with the ones I know.
Professor Trein: I'll get a list for you.
Kayla: Merci beaucoup.
~~~~
Later, everyone was headed to class, though Kayla stopped at the statues of the Great Seven.
Kayla: These seem interesting.
Grim: I'll say. That lady looks super strict.
???: You don't know the Queen of Hearts?
Turning around, the two saw Ace Trappola standing there.
Grim: (mentally to Kayla) Great, he's here.
Kayla: (mentally to Grim) Don't rise to his taunts. It'll make us look bad. (Out loud) Excuse me, but who are you?
Ace: I'm Ace Trappola. Heartslaybul 1st year. And you are?
Kayla: I'm Kayla Bandoriyu and this here is my familiar, Grim.
Introductions done, Ace explained who the Great Seven were. Of course, Kayla and Grim already knew this information but kept quiet to avoid suspicion. Then came the part Kayla hated. Ace insulting them.
Ace: Cool right? Unlike some piddling weasel.
Grim: (shocked) Myah?!
Ace: (mockingly laughing) Ha ha ha! I can't believe you fell for it! A magicless janitor and a wild monster causing havoc at the sorting ceremony! This is just too funny! Have fun cleaning while I'm at class, loser freaks!
Did- Did he just call them [freaks]? Kayla felt a surge of pure rage shoot through her. She stormed up to Ace, grabbed his shoulder, sharply spun him around, and slapped him so hard it was a miracle his neck didn't snap in two. Instead he fell to the ground.
Kayla: (growls) Never. Call. Me. A. Freak. Or Else.
With one vicious stomp onto Ace's 'Mr Happy', Kayla stormed off to class. Everyone who had gathered during Ace's explanation hoping to see a fight break out winced and yelped in sympathy.
~~~
Classes had ended for the day and the students of the newly dubbed Ozmadeus Dorm were making their way back when a loud crash sounded from the cafeteria.
Rai: What the...
Kayla: (thinking) So it's begun. (out loud) You guys head back. I'll go investigate. I'm taking Grim with me.
Kyle: Be careful.
~~~
At the cafeteria, Grim noticed another copy of himself and quickly killed it. Inside, Crowley was scolding Ace Trappola, Deuce Spade, Jack Howl, Epel Felmier, and Sebek Zigvolt for breaking a chandelier. (Odd)
After a bit, Crowley mentioned the Dwarf Mines where a new mage stone could be found. The five headed off with the young woman following.
~~~
At the mine, Sebek noticed her and started yelling only to get a large piece of caramel shoved into his mouth.
Kayla: Don't yell so much. Not only are you gonna destroy your vocal cords, but also hurt the ears of beastmen.
Jack: Who are you?
Kayla: I'm Kayla Bandoriyu, but what's important right now is to get that mage stone before Crowley writes up the expulsion paperwork.
Deuce: She's right. Let's move.
~~~
Good news: They found a mage stone.
Even better news: There were dozens of mage stones in the mine.
Bad news: The Blot Phantom was there.
Even worse news: There were SEVEN OF THEM!
Kayla knew that if they wanted to survive, she had to reveal the truth early.
"Tell me something: What's behind me? Tell me: Who's the loneliest of all? {MIRROR MIRROR: KING'S ROAR}!"
~~~
(Crowley's Office)
Crowley: Let me see if I got this right: Ms Bandoriyu followed you five with her familiar in tow.
Ace: Yep.
Crowley: You entered the mine and found dozens of mage stones.
Deuce: Yeah.
Crowley: But there were seven ink-like monsters guarding the stones.
Jack: Yes.
Crowley: So you lot engaged in battle, working together.
Epel: Eeyep.
Crowley: And when it seemed like it was over for you, Ms Bandoriyu unlocked a rare type of magic?
Sebek: That's the long and short of it, sir.
Crowley: ...
After a minute of silence, Crowley began to cry like a fountain.
Crowley: (sobbing) I-I d-don't believe it! Students of my school actually working together for a common cause!
Ace: Is... Is he okay?
Kayla: Give him a minute.
Crowley: (calms down) To think, in all my time as an educator, this year would be one where students agree and work side-by-side instead of arguing.
Kayla tuned out the rest of the speech, only piping in where needed. After receiving the Ghost Camera, the group was dismissed.
~~~
Jack: (yawns) Well, this has been tiring. I'm off to bed.
Kayla: Why don't you guys stay the night with me? It's closer and I did fix it last night.
Ace: In that dump heap?
Ace regretted those words after seeing the dorm.
Grim: Welcome to Ozmadeus, founded on the Unity and Balance of the Witches of Oz.
§§§§
Ficlet for Ozmadeus Dorm au.
(Warning: contains mentions of suicide and death (You Have Been Warned))
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§
Kayla Bandoriyu could not believe what had happened to her. At first, she was getting ready for bed after watching the news report of another population decline. The next thing she knew, she was waking up to the inside of a coffin in Twisted Wonderland. Grim broke her out but then tried to burn her to charcoal just to get the robes she was wearing. Luckily, Dire Crowley found her and took her back to the Mirror Chamber for orientation. She stood in front of the Dark Mirror who asked for her name. She gave it and the Dark Mirror announced, "Your soul is unique. The colors and shapes evenly blending together like an aurora. Your magic is unfit for the other dorms but a new dorm will arise by thine own hand." Everyone, and I mean everyone, of the dorm leaders (there being more than just the seven from the game) were shocked. Just afterwards, Grim broke out of Crowley's "Lash of Love" and started spewing fire everywhere. A major shock appeared right then and there in the form of another Grim, this one the size of a great dane. He snarled and ripped the smaller Grim apart, leaving behind a corpse melting into ink. After that mess, Crowley did try to send her and the students that didn't get sorted into a dorm back home. The Dark Mirror reiterated it's announcement and even stated that Kayla could not return to her world as it was now a dying Neverland, which shocked everyone.
~~
Kayla felt like screaming as Crowley was planning on leaving the group in a building that could collapse on their heads as they slept. Entering the abandoned dorm, Kayla found that the ghosts were at least nice enough to greet them by NOT scaring them. The three didn't have names, none that they could remember anyway, so Kayla decided to give them new ones. The tall thin ghost was named Larry. The shortest ghost was named Moe, leaving the rotund ghost with Curly Joe. It helped that they had similar laughs to the Three Stooges back in her old world.
"So what now?"
The question asked by a blue-haired wolf beastman resonated with everyone else.
"We clean," Kayla stated.
A pink-haired crane beastman snorted and said, "This place? We'd be here for weeks and never get a safe place to live with that birdbrain Crowley blackmailing our finances and food intake."
Kayla rolled her eyes and said, "In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and" SNAP! At the sound of Kayla snapping her fingers, the nearby furniture cleaned and fixed themselves. Shocking everyone. "The job's a game."
[Kayla (singing): And every task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake
A lark! A spree!
It's very clear to see
That a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down, the medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way
(Everyone looks at each other before separating to other areas of the dorm to try, Kayla's singing following them somehow)
A robin feathering his nest
Has very little time to rest
While gathering his bits
Of twine and twig
Though quite intent in his pursuit
He has a merry tune to toot
He knows a song
Will move the job along
For a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down, medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way
(As the song progresses, the dorm starts looking more and more like a lived in dorm than an abandoned house.)
The honey bees that fetch the nectar
From the flowers to the comb
Never tire of ever buzzing
To and fro
Because they take a little nip
From ev'ry flower that they sip
And hence (and hence), they find (they find)
Their task is not a grind...
'echo vocalizes'
Cheeky!
'Spit spot! And off we go!'
All (singing): For a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
The medicine go down, medicine go down
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way]
Everyone stared happily at the fixed dorm, even the ghosts. Curly Joe happily cried that the lost song magic, a very ancient form of magic, had returned.
During the cleanup, the wolf beastman had found an empty door frame which Larry revealed was to a sub pocket that changed to a person's wishes. Kayla decided that they needed some way to earn money at the school in order to survive. So taking inspiration from a game series she played once, Kayla set the door frame to create a challenge chamber for the students. Now all they needed was a name for the dorm. But that could wait a bit.
"If we're going to be living together for the next four years, we might as well introduce ourselves. I'm Kayla Bandoriyu, an immigrant from a dying world."
Red-haired monkey beastman: "Good idea. I'm Ricardo Sarutobi, monkey beastman from the Queendom of Roses."
Blond bear beastman: "Aslan Kumajiro, bear beastman from Northern Pyroxene."
Blue-haired wolf beastman: "William Howl, wolf beastman from Northern Pyroxene. Call me Will. My cousin Jack is a freshman in Savannaclaw dorm."
Pink-haired crane beastman: "Kyle Tsubasa, crane beastman from the Queendom of Roses. Specifically, Clock Town. It's not much, but it's home."
Black-haired frog beastman: "Adamo Gamabunta, frog beastman from Port o' Bliss."
White-haired falcon beastman: "Timothy Takahashi from the Isle of Woe. I prefer Tim."
Green-haired snake beastman: "James Hebizaka from the Scalding Sands. Call me Jim."
Nervous-looking lion beastman: "Rai Nervos from the Afterglow Savanna."
Robotic-looking fellow: "Chopper Tinson from the Briar Valley. I have advanced prosthetics replacing my legs and left arm."
Guy with straw-colored hair: "Albert Strawman from Harveston in Pyroxene. My neighbor Epel Felmier got sorted into Pomefiore dorm."
Grim: "And I'm Grim, a chimera reincarnated from another timeline."
Will: "Another timeline?"
Grim: "Yeah. Ya see, I stupidly ate some blot stones and went a little "cookoo for coco puffs", as my old human companion Yu would say. I ended up overblotting and accidentally killed Yu, which snapped me out of my power trip. I took my own life but woke up in this timeline. And I should know since we only had seven dorms. As Yu once said after they finally realized that they really were in a different world; "Toto, we're definitely not in Kansas anymore." No idea where they got that line from."
Kayla snorted, causing everyone to look at her. "Sorry," she said, "but I had a flashback to a really old movie I saw once. It's called "The Wizard of Oz" and it was about a girl named Dorothy who gets sent to Oz via a twister and has to find a way home."
Ricardo startled in surprise. "The Wizard of Oz?! But that's an old legend!" Seeing the looks of curiosity on everyone he explained (see first Ozmadeus Dorm post).
Kayla lightly hummed. "You know. The balance and unity between the Witch of the North and the Witch of the West made me realize something. Being students that were not sorted into the regular dorms, we have to stand as a united front against the adversity that everyone else will throw at us. But at the same time, we have to balance our morals without leaning too far one way or the other. Our dorm will be that balance here at Night Raven College. We will be the dorm of the Lost Witch Lovers. We are Ozmadeus." At that last word, everyone felt their magic practically sing in happiness.
And thus was born Ozmadeus Dorm, founded on balance and unity.
§§§§§§§§§
Whew. That was quite a bit of writing. Maybe I'll continue. Maybe I won't. We'll just have to wait.
@herrenxenoberg's Fandorm Showcase will be mentioned in these little fics if I continue. Go check them out.
I've got a very mixed relationship with TV Tropes. They banned me twice for no real reason, but I can't stop admiring their archive of tropes. This is what a work page for my "Encanto" fanfic, "Cracks in the future", would look like. (Some of these tropes also fit the canon characters in the movie.)This fanfic is set in an alternate universe, where Bruno has a wife (Míriam) and two kids (Teresa and Víctor).
A - H
Adaption Personality Change: Downplayed. There's a bit less emphasis in this fic on the weirder things, that Bruno will do in the movie. This is partly because most of it is told from Teresa's point of view, and she's a Daddy's Girl who won't find him strange. But it helps as well that he's happier in this fic than in most of the movie, and it makes his anxieties less pronounced and easier to control. That said, it is made clear that Bruno still manages to weird other people out. Abuelo Gonzalez (his father-in-law) actually wonders if he's "right in the head", and Pablo is forced to admit that he can see why people would find him "odd". But still, while Bruno is likely to cover his face with a hood if he's out in public, except if Míriam is there to pull it down, he will never wear a bucket over his head here. And he still has rats as pets long before it would be seen as normal, but his two alter egos Hernando and Jorge are never mentioned at all in this fic. And even him being superstitious is only mentioned exactly once.
Adaptional Angst Downgrade: Bruno is generally much happier in this fic than in most of the movie. It is true that he still deals with the pressure from his mother, and with a bunch of judgemental villagers. But it's noted that him meeting Míriam has improved his life a great deal. He never hid from his family for years either in this fic, since he could talk to his wife about his visions and had two kids to raise. Bruno and Míriam agreed to simply not reveal what he saw in Mirabel's future. That made his mother furious with him, but he didn't have to become a hermit…
The Alcoholic: Tía Malena's husband Enrique is described as a violent drunk, and nobody in Malena's family likes him.
All Work vs All Play: This is what Míriam and Malena were in their younger days. Míriam preferred to stay at home and help their parents in their shop, but Malena would be out dating different guys instead.
Almighty Mum: When a bully's father is about to start attacking Bruno's door, Bruno can't do much except take his crying wife into his tower, and tell his kids to go to their rooms and hide there. And as soon as the man attacks the door, what saves the situation is that the door gives the attacker an electric shock, and that Abuela Madrigal arrives and tells him and his wife off. They try to make it look as if everything is Bruno's and Teresa's fault, but that doesn’t work at all. Abuela Madrigal only tells them to leave. And naturally, they must obey her.
* As a matter of fact, people respect Abuela Madrigal so much that Teresa can use it. She learns that if Pablo's father keeps on slandering her and her father, her bringing up her abuela is the only way to make him stop.
Ascended Extra: Bruno has never hidden from his family for a decade in this fic, where he becomes the beloved father of protagonist Teresa. So he naturally has lots of screen time here, that he didn't have in the movie.
Awful Wedded Life: Tía Malena is clearly unhappy with her marriage to Enrique, who's described as a violent drunk who nobody in Malena's family likes. Also, Pablo reveals to Teresa that he wonders if his parents even still like each other. Both of these cases are in contrast to the three happy Madrigal marriages.
Bespectacled Cutie: Mirabel happens to be the only family member except for her father, who needs to wear glasses. She's also the only Madrigal kid to have no gift and struggles with that.
Beta Couple: Julieta and Pepa are already dating Agustín and Félix respectively, when Bruno and Míriam get together in the first chapter. It is later revealed in the second chapter, that Julieta and Pepa are planning triple dates. And later on in the story, the three couples have been married for 22 years and are still friends.
* Dolores and Mariano become this to Teresa and Pablo by the end of the story. It is a case though where the Betas get together later than the Official Couple, since everyone had just expected Mariano to propose to Isabela, while Dolores had hidden her feelings for him.
Big Sister Instinct: Teresa manages to save Víctor from a group of mean bullies, and it's revealed that Pepa used to do the same thing for Bruno.
Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Abuelo Pedro was killed during an attack right after his kids were born.
Bookworm: Bruno is hardly fond of being out among people in public, but he will still take his family on regular visits to the local library. It is noted that he was an avid reader as a young man. So now, it is important to him to encourage his kids to read. And it worked especially well with Víctor, who loves to go to the library. However, Teresa will borrow a book or two as well.
A Boy, a Girl, and a Baby Family: Dolores is 21 years old, Camilo is 15 years old and Antonio is the baby of the family at five years old.
Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Bruno becomes a downplayed example when Teresa meets Pablo. Bruno is clearly uncomfortable with it, but he still is more nervous than aggressive. And he doesn’t have anything bad to say about Pablo, he is even able to apologize for acting weird, and acknowledge that Pablo is the first person who isn't a family member, who will respect him. As soon as Teresa asks her parents if she can bring Pablo to her room though (she promises that they'll only talk, but they would be alone together in her bedroom), Bruno has to warn him that he can't do anything "improper" to her.
Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Downplayed with Bruno and Míriam as he is as gentle to her as she is to him. They were also both lonely before they met each other. However, Bruno was extremely unhappy until then. And he still has his anxieties and a bad reputation. Míriam managed to see that he wasn't dangerous though, even if she was the only girl in the Encanto to be willing to date him. Nowadays, it is her job to help him deal with whatever his problems are…
* Pepa and Félix are a gender-inverted example. She is very hot-tempered and overly emotional, and it became his job to calm her down (and it's a very important job, since Pepa's mood controls the weather in the Encanto). The Bully: A gang of them attack Víctor in an alley before Teresa can stop them. One of the bullies who insults their father gets what he deserves though…
* It is revealed that Bruno also was attacked by bullies when he was younger, and that Pepa had to strike them in their heads with lightning.
Bumbling Dad: Mirabel's father, Agustín, is clumsy and will always attract bees, but he does love his wife and his daughters dearly and will do anything for them.
Canon Foreigner: Míriam, Malena, their parents, Teresa, Víctor, Leonor, Pablo, Pablo's family and Enrique are all characters, who don't appear in the movie.
Clashing Cousins: Teresa and Isabela are never able to get along. But then, Teresa suddenly has an epiphany that Isa almost accepted a loveless marriage. And it makes her feel sympathy for her at last…
Daddy's Girl: Teresa is very devoted to Bruno and won't let anybody insult him (and that is what most of the villagers do). She is very adamant about assuring that he's right about all of his visions. Her theory is that she got the same gift as him just for this reason: Since she loves her father so much, she can't imagine having a different gift.
Demoted To Extra: This happened to several of the characters from the movie. Mirabel is Teresa's best friend and still an important character, but she's not the protagonist and will not appear in every chapter. And as much as Julieta, Pepa, Agustín, Félix, Camilo and Antonio are still there, they only get a few lines each. When it comes to more minor characters from the movie, like the kids who pestered Mirabel, Señora Pezmuerto and Señor Flores, they are still around as well, but they're not named and don't get any lines. Osvaldo Orozco Ortiz is an aversion though, as he is in the spotlight in one scene.
Disappeared Dad: Abuelo Pedro was forced to sacrifice his life to save all the other villagers, when they were attacked when his three kids had just been born. Not only did this traumatize his wife Alma (a k a Abuela Madrigal), but it's clear that Bruno (who was the only boy) also struggled a lot as he didn’t have a father.
* Nobody has ever found out what happened to Teresa's cousin Leonor's father. He seems to have just disappeared one day. So he must have either been killed, or he found some way to leave the Encanto and abandon his pregnant fiancée.
Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Mirabel and Dolores end up with this dynamic, when they're in the same scene together. Mirabel is very bubbly and talkative, Dolores is calmer and much quieter.
Fiery Redhead: Tía Pepa is red-headed and really hot-tempered. Her mood is what controls the weather in the Encanto.
Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Míriam had become the responsible sister, who preferred to stay at home and help her parents in their shop. Malena would be out dating different guys instead. Even as they've reached their middle age, Míriam is Happily Married and described by Teresa as a perfect wife and mother, while Malena is stuck with a violent drunk and is very jealous of her sister.
Freudian Trio: The three middle-aged women in the Casita form a trio like this. Pepa is really hot-tempered (the Id), Julieta is the calm and responsible sister (the Superego), while Míriam does her best to be the perfect wife and mother, but she can still start crying and lose her temper (the Ego).
* This is true for their husbands as well. Félix is jolly and extroverted (the Id), Agustín is calm and more composed (the Superego), while Bruno is introverted, but will often show emotions like sadness and anxiety and shame (the Ego).
* And naturally, this is true with the triplets too, with Pepa as a hot-tempered Id, Julieta as the calm Superego and Bruno as the introverted but nervous Ego.
Generation Xerox: Míriam got really scared the first time she saw Bruno's eyes glow green, and it made him plead with her to not leave him. Years later, this is repeated but gender-inverted with Teresa and Pablo. He is very startled when he sees her eyes glow green, and it makes her plead with him to not leave her.
* Pablo's mother says that Teresa reminds her of her mother though. But later, Pablo reveals to Teresa that her eyes will look sad even when she's smiling. And that's a trait, that she's apparently inherited from her father.
* Víctor is very much like Bruno, which has become notable to lots of people. Both of them are described as having a melancholy and nervous personality. Their pictures that hang next to Abuela Madrigal's door are nearly identical. Both of them are also into writing stories and theater and have rats as pets.
* But a lot of this might go back one more generation. As soon as Pablo sees a painting of Abuelo Pedro, he says he thinks that Bruno looks a lot like him. Bruno and Víctor are also to have inherited their writing skills from him.
Generational Trauma: Abuela Madrigal watched her husband get killed during an attack. And it made her think that her kids and grandkids have to work hard, and produce new generations of Madrigals, so the magic and their protection from new attacks will stay strong. But it makes her do things like allowing the villagers to slander Bruno, pushing Mirabel to the side until she feels unloved, pressuring Isabela to think that she must enter a marriage that she doesn’t want, and Luisa to think that she has to work hard until she almost burns herself out. Teresa is mostly left alone until she meets Pablo. But then, Abuela Madrigal makes it clear that she wants great-grandkids. It is only after the Casita crumbles and the magic is lost, that a healing process can begin…
The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Míriam and Malena have a responsible vs irresponsible divide, and not a smart vs pretty divide (even if Míriam is the wiser out of the two, and Malena is described as having been the more popular sister). But still, Malena seems to see her whole life as just a competition with Míriam. Malena is very bitter and jealous since Míriam has a better life than her.
* Mirabel and Isabela are unable to get along, and Mirabel and Teresa love to mock Isabela for being so haughty. But they can reconcile after Isabela reveals her secret: she was only going to marry Mariano to please Abuela Madrigal.
Glowing Eyes: This is what happens when Bruno or Teresa looks into the future. Their eyes will glow green.
Good Parents: Teresa and Víctor feel that Bruno and Míriam definitely are this. Teresa adores her father and admires her mother, just as much as Víctor adores his mother and admires his father.
Green Thumb: Isabela's power is that she can grow plants out of nowhere.
Happily Married: Teresa is glad that she grew up around three happy marriages (Bruno/Míriam, Pepa/Félix and Julieta/Agustín), but she can also describe her abuelos as being devoted to each other…
Hidden Depth: Even if Teresa didn't quite agree with Mirabel that Mariano was a "dumb hunk", she is very surprised when she learns that he's a poet.
Honorary Uncle: This story has an inversion. Normally, Teresa and Víctor would have called Tía Malena's husband "Tío Enrique". But nobody in Malena's family likes him because he's a violent drunk, so nobody has taught Teresa or Víctor to think of him as their tío. He is therefore referred to as just "Enrique".
Housewife: Zig-zagged with Míriam. She devotes a big chunk of her life to just taking care of her husband and her kids, and that is clearly what she wanted. However, she likes to run her family's shop too after she gets a chance to do so. Still, she is prepared to leave the shop again after the magic returns.
