Do you have a favorite mindless art activity that you could do every day? One that you look forward too? One that might not always serve a purpose outside of just filling a creative hole? ⁣ For me it’s all the painted papers. ⁣ I love making marks on paper. Circles, dots, dashes, scallops, lines, leaves, flowers, and lots more circles. It’s cathartic and they come in handy every time I go to collage something. Just in case you were craving the sweet sound of crunchy paper today. ⠀⠀ Seriously. One of my favorite things about painted papers is the sound they make when they dry. ⠀⠀ I could sit and sift through stacks of paper all day. I love envisioning them cut into smaller pieces and I love how the details of each sheet plays off the next. And lately exploring watercolor has become my favorite medium for painting. After the workshop I co-taught with @sandikeene, QuickStart Watercolor, launched I couldn’t stop experimenting with all the things this paint could do for me. So yeah! Lots of painted papers. A few years ago I fell hard for working small. The Pocket Journal was born and everything was roses. I use this tiny journal as a forever home for lots of my small artwork. Little pages means little pieces. ⠀⠀ Then I fell in love with watercolor. The kind of love that makes you crazy. Do you ever take cues from your palette? ⠀⠀ I love the color explosion left behind after a good watercolor painting session. I always let it dry and revisit the color combinations the next time I sit down to paint. So many times I have found inspiration in these leftovers. It’s a fun way to discover “new” colors too! Playing with paint today even though I only have a few minutes in the studio. ⠀⠀ I’ve been so busy-with life stuff and helping to plan and launch Pocket.doc and about a half dozen other big things-that I was suddenly hit with the notion that I hadn’t painted in days. I didn’t like that idea very much so I decided to do something about it. ⠀⠀ I don’t let the clock scare me. I have big deadlines right now but that doesn’t mean I can’t be creative. In fact, it means I need to be more creative. Making things keeps me feeling inspired and refreshed and joyful in what I am doing. ⠀⠀ So I grabbed my favorite @mijellomission palette, a trusty old brush, and a scrap of paper and I sat down to paint. ⠀⠀ I knew before I began that I had exactly 12 minutes before I had to get started on the next item on my to-do list, but it was enough. Enough to splash some paint on the paper and more than enough to get me feeling creative and happy about art-even the long to-do lists that are part of my job. ⠀⠀ No matter what I’m working on- a painting, my Pocket.doc, or in my sweet Pocket Journal- I only need a few minutes to feel like I’ve accomplished something. Early morning in the studio is my favorite time to create. Today is a good day to be kind...and to paint. ⠀⠀ I had fun with our “two takes series” today. Sandi painted a beautiful spray of flowers that I admired, so I chose to use it for inspiration for my own take. It was tricky as I was working much smaller than she worked. My substrate was only 3” square. Size didn’t matter though as I was still able to pull from her painting to help bring my own tiny watercolor to life. ⠀⠀ As a springboard I chose her big florals, deep purpled blues, and her abundant leaves- and I created a micro version of my own. ⠀⠀ Swipe to see the piece @sandikeene painted, which I used for my inspiration. ⠀⠀ In case you missed it earlier, @sandikeene and I have teamed up and are sharing our love of creating side by side with you. Another little painting as part of Two Takes. ⠀⠀ It is so interesting to see what our brain retains after studying different art pieces. I always love picking out the bits and watching as they morph into something new as I paint them for myself. ⠀⠀ Three elements caught my eye in @sandikeene piece today. The large focal element, the penned marks (always my favorite and something I can’t help but do every time), and all the green hues. I took those three elements and tried to paint them into something of my own.
