I need to write weirder relationships and weirder intimacy

I'm laughing--this is still way more sane than my process, which is that I do no outlining or organizing until the entire thing is done. I usually don't even have chapter breaks until I'm approaching the end of the first draft.

I currently have one (1) document that has 50k words in it. there is no organizing structure in the document. when I get to the editing phase or if I ever feel like I am going to cut a huge chunk of text, I start a second document which is called "[whatever] DRAFTS" and then I will occasionally copy and paste the entire first document in there. this document is often hundreds of pages long by the time I'm done.

I use cool and helpful structuring things such a:

leaving a huge gap at the end of chunks of text when I think there is more scene there

leaving a huge gap at the beginning or in the middle of a chunk of text if I can't be bothered to figure out what's supposed to go there right now

leaving lots of notes in brackets in the middle of sentences (there's a lot of "[there's another sentence here]" or "[beat]" or occasionally the very helpful "[hhgh]" or "[mweh]" if I can't remember words in English).

very, very occasionally leaving notes in brackets about scenes that I need to fill in but am not writing right now this moment. whether I will describe said scene in a way that is comprehensible to me later is up to debate (although I have gotten better at it).

keeping way too much stuff in my brain and not on the page so sometimes I forget that I was going to do something (I have gotten better about this too--never forget the half-written scene that got cut from 'sidewalk soldiers' not because it was bad but because I had no memory of writing it and couldn't remember where I was planning on going with it for MONTHS).

Once I have something that is approaching a full draft, THEN I worry about structuring. This may explain why I constantly misjudge how long a fic will be and also why my chapter lengths (if I come up with a chapter-naming scheme partway through instead of at the end) are Like That.

I am fully aware that this is a truly unhinged way to write. Unfortunately, despite my graduate school advisor's best efforts, it continues to be the only way that I can write.

SO the biggest appeal of dabihawks is ofc the enemies to lovers trope, first lets look at canon:

theyre enemies plain and simple, they hate each other, its a beautiful show to watch of them absolutely disgusted by the other but forced to interact [ IF ONLY THEY GOT MORE FUCKING SCREENTIME TOGETHER JESUS CHRIST ] anyways its the angst potential, hawks dirtying his hands just to get into the league only to then betray the entire league </3 hawks dirtying his hands just for the sake of the mission for the sake of dabi letting him in because that WAS his only contact so hes the one hes "closest too" dabi the evil motherfuck toying with hawks, making him do all the things he hates and knowing what hawks is truely doing. they hate each other in canon plain and simple they dont care if neither one dies or not. hawks even STILL views endeavor as an equal even after all hes done (whether or not you think its valid is up to you i think that hawks needs a LITTLE MORE TIME AND SPACE to rethink the whole "yeah no enjis cool now hes alright :D" shtick.... personally i hate it i just want him to be a little more..... EYES OPEN to how fucked up endeavor did things even if hes trying to do better now like ?????) canon tropes that could fit are like their divorce, unhealthy co dependency, there was only one bed, acciental first kiss, drunk sex, fuck buddies, rarepair, the whole hero vs villain thing, height difference, flirty and the flustered, oh fuck theyre BOTH messed up, loud and quiet ETC ETC

now heres where the dots connect though through fandom genius. now when dabis first introduced hes blue and emo and firey and dramatic (theatre kid) mentally unwell, tired yet manic, daddy issues supreme, body horror circus party, the whole palooza. we ALL been known, his daddys a top hero who made him a top villain. and now hawks, who was an enigma at first, man too fast for his own good, red, arrogant, laidback, yet serious and calculating, heart of gold underneath all of that dirty work with a like for trashy preppy outfits. at first it was just the enemies to lovers, dabi hates endeavor and heroes, hawks admires him to the sun and is one of the best heros... AND THEN WE GET HAWKS BACK STORY. hawks. hero. raised by a villain. if the red and blue, sun and moon, emo/goth and jock, FLAME AND FEATHERS, if those parallels werent enough the father issues sure will! dabi, hero father made him a villain, hawks, villain father made him a hero. the amount of parallels these two have was fuel for the growing fire.

FIRE IN WHICH IT WAS FANON. fanon dabihawks is BEAUTIFUL. the best and probably only light dabihawks will ever shine in 😀😀😀 < gripping horikoshis neck even thought nothing will happen but angst for these two. slightly shifted canon compliant with some queer writing and spicing up the characters a SMIDGE, making them more fit to how they ACTAULLY ARE (in my very (not) humble opinion horikoshi you dont know your own characters like we do) all of that is the mountain of fanfic tropes. we already have enemies to lovers but add a little bit of that battle for dominance play and sexual tension, heavy flirting and fuck buddies OOO BOY. they play and they bite and hawks is number one pretty boy and charms his way past dabi "probably hasnt been flirted with in his life," OR dabi being the brat and attention seeker he is and pushing hawks buttons before dabi gets put in his place. hawks turned genuine lov member because then thats where he sees the TRUTH. or hawks still killing jin but REGRETS IT TO THE MAX and dabi finds him a little after and hawks begging for forgiveness. the league was his only true family but hes been a hero under the commission for so long that killing him was second nature until he realizes. rehabilitation after the war and dabi being captured and hawks still visiting him wherever dabis being held. if you make them even a LITTLE BIT GAY it literally makes things more tragic than just "lets hate each other even though we're walking parallels"

one very popular and loved aspect is red tailed hawks avian hawks and not just his fierce wings. THIS ADDS TO THE MOUNTAIN. youve got a multitude of bird facts like torpor, nesting, cloacas if youre into that, preening, MATING HABITS. hawks being a spy to the league only to see how open they are to their members quirks. spinner and his lizardness needing warmth and insects and shedding and togas fascination and need for blood ( not quirk reasons shes mentally ill but there are healthy ways to get blood so) hawks seeing the league being accepting open AND welcoming to when we dont see ANY OF THAT in his hero work??? especially with dabis inside knowledge of how shit the hero system is with quirk discrimination??? youve got so much to work with here JUST from the aspect of making hawks a hawk mutant. he likes how shiny dabi is with his staples and piercings, he loves the natural warmth coming from him (even if dabis skin is cold), hawks lowkey loving the smell of blood from dabis scars (bird of prey) dabi helping hawks be open to the more avian side of him, he imprints on him and dabi becomes mate in hawks mind, IN TURN hawks showing dabi that even the most shittiest of origins, you can still do good, hawks knowing full well that quirks sucks (molting season, talon clipping, wing care, the overstimulation of senses like sounds hawks has become numb to) and he coaxs that little burning fire thats still in dabi, that he can still do good (dabi said that killing innocent people drove him mad in a negative way so he doesnt enjoy it) two broken souls from quirk discrimination finding solace even with all the shit hero AND villain society treat them. this leads to, along with those above, hurt comfort, slow burn, mutual healing, mutual pining, sunshine x grump, girlboss and malewife, overly affectionate x touch adverse, old married couple, sacrifices too much x sacrifices too little, romantic virgin x romantic confident, annoyed x annoying, gets into fights x patches them up, OBLIVIOUSNESS TO THE MAX, idiots in love, domestic husbands ETC ETC (and the more kinky spicy aspects when it comes to bird genes and a fire quirk)

what makes them even JUCIER is if you make the commission EVIL. EXACTLY WHAT DABI HATES AND DESPISES. another common trope is to make hawks be lowkey abused by the commission hence the whole child soldier thing but hawks has been living with then his whole life so its like, fine for him. dabi being his savior, dabi showing him the league can be his true family, dabi, a villain, being hawkss hero. hawks, who would get his hands dirty just for the sake of justice, shows dabi true heroes are still alive. hawks being an avian mutant adds to the juice because if it was just hawks with fierce wings well you could paint it as just the child soldier BUT WITH THE HETEROMORPH youve got commission being absolute JERKS and forcing hawks to mask his avian-ness, forced to endure people touching his wings left and right, forced to not perch, forced to have them preen his feathers in the way that society views as "perfect," clipping his talons, making him live in a boring ass apartment because "hawks heroes dont care about sentiments, you have to be presentable and collecting 'shiny things' isnt herolike," the league being the EPITOME of quirk freedom, hawks finding solace in the league because hes actually able to be himself and being a heteromorph isnt SHOULDNT be bad, dabi being able to polish his old big brother instincts and take care of hawks nurse him back to help and free him from his bird cage.

SPEAKING OF BIRD CAGES, another beautiful fanon interpretation is DABI HIMSELF BEING A PART OF THE LEAGUE BEFORE HIS REBIRTH. OW. youve got friends to lovers and all the fluff that comes with it (as much as it is being in the commission) dabi and hawks growing up together in the commission only for endeavor to pull dabi out and hawks loses his one true best friend :[ dabi and hawks not knowing how to socialize with other kids but between dabis temper yet caringness and hawks being shy yet a determined bastard, they click LOVINGLY. they bond over shitty fathers (hawks not knowing the extent to his idol OR you can change it up and have hawks despise endeavor secretly but the commission knows hes adored endeavor so he has to suck up the urge to MAIM and KILL the flaming bag of shit because at the time endeavor aint "changing" and he acts EXACTLY like hawkss birth father.) hawks imprinting on dabi his first real friend, taking care of each other through the commissions pains and abuse, sacrificing themselves in order for the other to not be punished. MAJOR ANGST WHEN IT COMES TO DABIS DEATH and hawks loses his spark and throws himself into training to distract the howling pain of his bird side and instincts as he lost a flock member (and potential mate), ONLY TO FIND DABI ALIVE YEARS LATER. the angst of reconciliation to see your love turn yo the darkest sides (dabi being a villain and hawks being a hero both of who they respectively hate) the angst of dabi knowing that without him the commission successfully brainwashed hawks to the point of betrayal on their side and hawks knowing his old beloved is now on the side in which he has to take down and kill (his old beloved truely did die if this is the path dabi went to) THE FRIENDS TO LOVERS TO STRANGERS TO ENEMIES AND BACK TO LOVERS. IM GONE O-(-( ORZ. youve successfully wounded me.

the amount of aus/canon divergent situations you can put these two from those three things TOGETHER or SEPARATE/SOLO, soulmates, quirk accident, princess carry, found family, exes to lovers, role reversal, fantasy au, royal au, cyberpunk au, dystopian, apocalypse, sickfic, honeypot turned non sexual intimacy, highschool au, civilians au, quirk swap, body swap, arranged marriage, actual genuine married couple, kindergarten au, amnesia fics, time travel, time travel fix it fics, space au, star wars au, pirates and mermaids, and the wonderful beautiful amount of crack/crack treated seriously is UDGODLY. hawks pranking endeavor, the lov and hawks playing video games, trophy wife dabi, watching disney movies, coming out at the worse times, "HAWKS/DABI WDYM YOUR FUCKING A VILLAIN/HERO," one or more of the todorokis (minus endeavor) being in the league and dabi hating it but hawks loves it (adores shouto, loves and is terrified of fuyumi, gets along w natsuo, DABI YOUR MOM IS A FALLEN ANGEL), dabis mom being in the league and is a better mom in canon and dabis like what the shit or this is my mom fuckers touch her and your burnt and hawks is like but what about affectionate touching (hugs, headbumps etc), hawks learning to build a pillow fort and experience actual good childhoos activities, dabi walking in on hawks (and maybe spinner and toga) indulging in his avian-ness for the first time, dabi cooking for hawks, hawkss nesting habits, gift giving

I personally see kinning in the otherkin sense and the relate-to sense as two separate things; personally, I feel like there should be a term to separate the two better, as I understand that otherkin is a DISTINCT experience from simply relating to a character in a way that you see yourself as them; as such, in my Carrd and here please do not mind the term "kinning" being used for the latter, I am very open to a better term being used as I wish to respect everyone I can, and I find "relate kinning" can be very beneficial to someone, but deserves to be classified as something distinct.

Synpaths. The term you're looking for is synpaths, Axon.

Personally, identifying as an otherkin is a means for me to cope. Nope, you're Heart Axon, in the flesh. You are just him. It's okay, you were taking baby steps.

I don't see myself as Heart in a past life nor Heart spiritually in-general, rather that I am something along the lines of Heart reduced to a human form, or something like that, but do use them as an integral part of my identify and identify as it for personal reasons.

Update to this ^^^^ I identify as an alternate universe of a villain version of Heart, in some sort of Tumblr ask blog-multifandom-palooza-type deal. In the Horror au, how would Flurry react to Iolite murdering her mother (since I recall you saying that Iolite kills the Crystal Empire family), or the Novolestia family to losing Novo's granddaughter and Aura's and Heavenly's "cousin"?

Flurry is part of the Crystal Family who gets murdered so technically she’d only have about 10 seconds to react to her mother’s death before she dies too. Shining Armor is also killed btw even though he’s legally no longer royalty, because he used to be part of the couple whose love once conquered all and Iolite would see their divorce as a betrayal of that love.

The hippogriff family is kind of in crisis because the heir to their throne is now dead. I think they would go back underwater to keep themselves safe, following the example of the dragons who are also hiding and bolstering their defense. Pinkie has joined them just as Rarity and Maud have joined Ember, but Celestia stayed behind to help Twilight on the surface. Heavenly Glow is chosen as the new heir in place of Taffy, along with Sahar, with whom she shares a love so supernaturally powerful that it strikingly parallels the now-divorced and dead Crystal couple. If Taffy has had her daughter Spring Palooza by the time this AU takes place (which I think is likely), then the whole hippogriff family is collectively raising her in preparation for deciding whether she or Setting Star (Heavenly and Sahar’s daughter) is more suited for the throne when they grow up.

There were a few regressions, but most were expected, and one in particular (PR #111807) is expected yield gains in object code performance at the expense of a slight compile-time hit. There are a couple PR's that need future followup, namely PRs #111364 and #111524.

NED RIFLE- 2014 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The third and final part of director Hal Hartleys Henry Fool Trilogy....

And its by far my favourite of the three.

Ned Rifle, the son of Henry Fool and Fay Grim is now grown up. Despite being deeply religious Ned sets out to kill Henry for ruining Fays life.

He starts by meeting up with Fays brother Simon who is trying to reinvent himself as a standup comedian.

"Am i not funny?"

This was a hilarious direction to go with Simon, he has been at points in Henry Fool and Fay Grim, quite uninteresting to me, but he really had me laughing, his comedy coach paid off.

While at Simons hotel, Ned meets Susan (Aubrey Plaza) who asks him to introduce her to Simon (shes his biggest fan and wants him to read a paper she wrote on him). We soon find out she has much deeper ties to there family and a secret plan of her own. Susan and Ned travel the country together searching for the infamous Henry Fool....

Very rare to have the third part of a trilogy be the best one but i think this really is. Its so much fun from start to finish, has a quick runtime and doesnt outstay its welcome.

Aubrey Plaza was excellent as Susan, she fits perfectly into this world, and had a really interesting backstory. Loved her in this. Her and Ned are the main focus of the film, with Simon and Fay in smaller roles and Henry having a big role only towards the end of the movie.

The running joke where Henry keeps seeing things as one of the side effects of the medical trial absolutely killed me every time it happened.

Love the tone of this film, an interesting combination of whacky comedy and drama.

Writer and director Hal Hartley describes these movies as "some kind of parallel neighborhood where I work out how the world feels to me"

The budget was around 400,000 dollars.

And Ned Rifle is also the next stop on PARKER POSEY PALOOZA!!!

Parker plays the previously mentioned Fay Grim who is now serving life in prison for treason. She only appears in a few scenes in the movie (she shot all her scenes in one day). Usually, id complain about her lack of screen time but i think she was used very well in the time we saw her. However, having Parker Posey and Aubrey Plaza in the same movie and not giving them a scene together is absolutely criminal. Theyre characters did interact before the movie though, (Susan is the ghostwriter for Fays biography).

Potential Human Parallels to the Diamonds

Yellow Diamond:Dr. Maheswaren--Authoritarian

Priyanka was very strict with Connie, giving rigid rules with no exceptions, and stifling her interests under the assumption that she knew what was best for her daughter. This rigidity came from a place of caring--she loves Connie and only wants the best for her--but conflict arose when Connie’s interests went against what her mother believed in, namely putting herself in dangerous situations.

We know that Yellow is very controlling and likes things a certain way, following the rules of Homeworld to a T, and when things go against what she feels is appropriate, she gets angry. I feel that Yellow’s controlling nature would extend to her philosophy in “raising” Pink to be a great leader, giving herself the authority to determine whether Pink is ready for a colony or not.

In the first situation, Connie began to do magic stuff behind her mothers back, even continuing to wear her glasses after her eyes were healed...just like how Pink continued to act like a Diamond after her eyes were opened to the true nature of colonization (and probably the evils of Homeworld hierarchy).

Blue Diamond: Barb--Helicopter Mom

Barb was controlling of Sadie in a different sense: she saw what Sadie was interested in, and took it to the extreme.She “wanted to show everyone how talented [her] daughter is!” even if the person she was trying to portray didn’t reflect who Sadie was at all. It became so overbearing that Sadie started hiding her interests from her mom, like singing in Beach-a-palooza.

We haven’t seen much of Blue’s relationship with Pink, but Blue did say that they were very close, indicating that they had a much better relationship that Pink and Yellow. In fact, when being scolded by Blue, Pink hardly made an attempt to argue, but when Yellow scolded her, Pink lost her temper right back. Plus, she understood how important the humans were to Pink, even though they served no purpose to Homeworld.

I don’t think the problem was that Blue took everything Pink was interested in to the extreme, but only when Pink’s interests are in Diamond Things(TM). I have a feeling that, even though Pink Diamond wouldn’t be defective by Homeworld’s standards (Diamonds are supposed to be “absolutely totally completely flawless beings”), her being small (and pink, perhaps) could cause questions to arise. And Blue, wanting to protect her, would push her to reaffirm her Diamond status any chance she could get and prove she’s just as worthy of this status as the other Diamonds. Of course, this behavior would have the opposite and effect and make Pink resent being a Diamond even more. She probably started hiding her interests until they manifested in to a secret identity: Rose Quartz.

And I also think it’s worth mentioning that Sadie, despite being “an adult,” is much smaller than her mom, and while dwarfism and certainly nothing to be ashamed of, I have to wonder if that’s a contributing factor for Barb pushing her to be the best (i.e. unhindered by her condition). Probably not, but I gotta consider all the possibilities.

White Diamond: Vidalia--Laissez-fair

Vidalia has never had conflict with her sons, but that’s just the thing: there’s no structure in their household. There’s no reason for argument because she doesn’t tell them what to do, and while she allows them to express themselves however they please, that could potentially be dangerous. In fact, it was. Onion was kidnapped by Topaz and Aquamarine because he was out late in Funland after it was closed for the night, and judging by Garnet’s slip-up in Pool Hopping, he could have easily been the one who was taken to Homeworld with Steven.

So White Diamond...we really don’t know anything about her, and the fact that she hasn’t been present at all says more than you’d think. Laissez-faire is a french phrase that translates as “allow to do,” and it’s a philosophy of non-interference. I believe that White wasn’t incredibly involved in Pink’s upbringing, in favor of letting Pink learn by experience and not by force, as Blue and Yellow did. But she also didn’t stop them from trying it their way. She could have even figured out Pink’s secret--I would be surprised if she wasn’t that perceptive, being the most important forehead gem in the show--and let the war go on anyway, on the off chance that Pink would buckle, confess, and learn her lesson.

She obviously underestimated Pink’s tenacity...or maybe she didn’t. She did help with the final attack and the corruption...We won’t know until we learn a little more about White.

The specs and fics are high on that rn but do you really think we'll get any grieving Cs-dean story? We know in the beginning he'll mention Cas but simply alongside Mary and Crowley. Afterwards? Im sure Sam will say something to Dean once avour Cas but hiS focus will be about Mary who he believes is still alive, jody wont say anything about Cas she doesnt know about him, and dean we know him wont be bringing him up. Maybe Jack will - and I hate the Jack storyline lol haha

Hey there - sorry if I’m answering so late, I’m almost done with the week from hell and finally have some time to catch up on things.

Off the top of my head -

1) Dean will grieve for Cas, because we’ve seen him doing so before - we’ve seen him become a useless drunk as far back as S7, and, more recently, we’ve seen him obsess over Cas’ safety when that whole Lucifer thing was going down (this was particularly obvious because Sam was written - wrongly, imo - as someone who couldn’t care less).

2) On the other hand, SPN doesn’t have a good track record for mentioning dead people, which I always found frustrating and not very believable - especially if we consider Sam and Dean have the advantage of knowing for sure what happens after death. And, whatever, so at the very beginning you drink or sob or punch the walls, but after a while it’s simply human to talk about people you lost (“What do you think Bobby would make of all this?”) and the fact they never go there - the fact neither Sam nor Dean ever wondered what Charlie’s Heaven looks like, the fact John was never mentioned despite Mary’s magical return - that annoys me to no end. So I won’t hold my breath waiting for them to change just because it’s Cas; on the contrary, I expect the usual thing - Dean in full I don’t care, leave me alone mode, Sam seemingly not giving a shit, and neither of them mentioning Cas at all (but let’s all check for what beer they drink, because that’s likely to be relevant). 

3) Another thing is that, because of that bullshit the relationship between Dean and Cas is deeper than the relationship between Sam and Cas but we won’t tell you why wink wink nudge nudge, there’s usually a big difference in how Sam and Dean react to Cas being in danger (or, in this case, dead). Now, if this was a normal show and the fact Dean is in love with Cas was out in the open, the story could be told much, much better - because Dean would be able to be a mess around Sam and Sam would be allowed to grieve openly for someone who is his best (and almost only) friend and with whom he has a deep emotional connection. Instead, the show traditionally uses the contrast between Dean’s and Sam’s reactions to suggest that they don’t care in the same way (but why??? who knows??!!!??), and the result is that Dean frets and drinks and is generally annoyed at the world, while Sam acts like nothing’s wrong and doesn’t give a fuck about anything that’s not some final victory (we saw this for bloody weeks during S11, and I hated it).  

4) Also: Dean is not used to lean on other people, and he’s certainly not used to lean on Sam. Losing Cas will surely shatter him from the inside out for a variety of reasons (even if you discard the romantic element, well, Dean’s stated several times that Cas’ family, and since he feels responsible for everything, he will feel it’s his fault Cas died - which, technically, is sort of true), but Dean doesn’t have anyone to talk to. Sam’s primary focus will be Jack, not ensuring that Dean doesn’t fall apart (because, again, Sam’s being written in a shittier and shittier way imo), and Dean wouldn’t want to talk to him, anyway - parents generally avoid distressing their kids with their own problems. The obvious solution here is Jody, but, then again, the obvious solution used to be Charlie back in the day, and even Crowley, and Benny, so I’m not expecting a lot of opening up there. I wonder if and how Claire will be involved in all this, but, again - if I had to bet, I’d say Dean will likely find his emotional outlet with a stranger, either directly (as per the now infamous church confession) or indirectly (and yay for the mirror-a-palooza thing we see in every episode as victims of monsters mysteriously say exactly what Dean is currently thinking but is too straight to say out loud).

So, well - yes, I think Dean will grieve for Cas, but I’m definitely not expecting tearful confessions or a complete breakdown or Sam being overly supportive or anything like that. At this point, it seems like Sam and Dean will give Cas a hunter’s funeral (which, in my opinion, is a stupid idea, but whatever), say some bullshit thing about how he was family, and then immediately start fighting over Jack, and then - who knows. Sam’s goal will be to open up the passage into the other world again, so he’ll be looking forward to working with Jack, while Dean will be his usual grumpy self because reasons. And, of course, as we’re facing this incredibly important thing - finding a way to go back for Mary, kill Lucifer, and save the world from a Nephilim, some kid will be mauled by a werewolf and So, get this or I got cabin fever or We might as well help people and the quest to find Mary (not to mention time to grieve for Cas - and even Crowley) will have to compromise with the show’s need to remain exactly the same, or else.

(As for Jack - I’m not overly excited about him, tbh. We had the ‘exceptional kid’ storyline, like, three times already, and they never made use of it in any way that made sense. Also - if I had to guess, I’d say Jack will imprint on Sam in the same way Amara imprinted on Dean, because parallels and also Jack is Lucifer’s kid, after all, but for some reason Jack won’t kiss Sam and won’t walk into the sunset with a chorus of Girl, you’ll be a woman soon, you’ll need a man and yay for heteronormativity.)

Brianna’s story begins: from winning an award to the state legislature

Vicki: Today we’re thinking about finding our voice, but helping our students find their voice, and also finding our voice as educators. We have somebody uniquely qualified. We have Brianna Hodges @edutechtastic. She’s the 2017 Texas Instructional Technologist of the Year.

One day, Bri, you woke up and you were getting ready to testify in front of, I believe, the Texas State Legislature, right?

Brianna: Hah!!! Yes.

Vicki: And you had a friend who pushed you to help find your voice, and you’ve ended up in D.C., right?

Brianna: I have! I am very honored to serve as one of the two national advisors for Future Ready Schools, representing the Instructional Coach strand. And so, yes, I’ve kind of started very quickly after accepting the award for Instructional Technologist of the Year, then TCEA – as many of our state affiliates has a strong advocacy arm for educational opportunities here in Texas. And so, they reached out to myself and Carl Hooker, another one of our proud Texans, and asked if the two of us would go and testify in front of the Senate, in front of the legislature, on educational technology and Open Education Resources and instructional materials.

And so it’s really interesting. I actually have a background in politics and have worked with a lot of those people in a far different life, but to kind of come back into that area and then kind of have to speak on behalf of your profession, knowing that everything is recorded and that it can be highly contentious. It’s very intimidating, and to be looked at as that authority it was really interesting. I owe Carl a great big thank you for instilling that confidence that you’re asked for a specific reason… and that if you speak the truth in you, you speak it with your passion and your voice, then people want to listen to you and they believe in the ideas if you can paint that picture for them.

“I don’t see myself as ‘that’ person.”

Vicki: Now before you went up, though, he asked you a question. What was it?

Brianna: So Carl is also the godfather of iPad Palooza. Some of you might know about this. He had talked me into serving as one of the mini-keynotes for this learning festival. So iPad Palooza does – in place of having a single headline keynote event at the beginning of the festival – have a series of mini-keynotes. It’s pretty intimidating, honestly, for someone like me to see who all has graced that stage. But he has a way of believing in you and helping you see that could do it too.

So I agreed to it. So he asked me at that point, “OK what are you going to talk about?”

And I told him, “I don’t know. I don’t even know why you want me to do this!’ And I just started laughing because I am from a pretty small town, and I just don’t see myself as that person who gets asked to go and do all of these big (things). I just don’t see myself as that person who has that big name.

You know, he gave me some time. This was in April, and the learning festival, iPad Palooza is not until June, and so he was like, “Well, you’ve got some time. Don’t worry about it.” And we just kind of laughed that off.

Fast forward to a few weeks, and Carl also serves on Future Ready Schools as one of the advisors for the IT strand. So we both found ourselves in D.C. again. He asked again what I was going to speak on, and I said, “I really don’t know.”

He “pushed” me at that point, and he said, “Yes, you do. I asked you for a reason. And yes, you do.”

And I said, “OK, I really don’t know.”

And he said, “What would you tell your kids? What would you tell your teachers? Talk about what it is that you are passionate about.”

And he got me kind of riled up. I’ve known Carl for a number of years. So basically, I said, “OK! Fine. Yes. I would love to talk about how teachers are change agents, and what it means to actually change, and how do we create change. We create that change through using our voice and finding the thing that speaks loudest to us, and then taking that voice and sharing that with others.”

From that, he was really happy to know – and he said, “See, I told you. You knew that you had it in you.”

So fast forward to the actual keynote. Here I was. It’s a very intimidating process. You walk into this auditorium and there are all these video cameras on you. You see who all is going to be up there, and I drew the lucky straw of being the second person.

Anyway, my presentation… I kind of built it around, “What We’re Meant to Be.” We’re meant to be so much more than what we limit ourselves to, based upon our fear.

And so I talked about how, in my current role I spend my days in an instructional coaching role working with teachers. And they are faced with an immense amount of change as we go through this integration of technology, and individualization of learning, and all these different pedagogical changes that are coming rapid fire, it seems like in education.

That’s really unnerving, especially for teachers who have been really competent at what they have always done. Now all of a sudden to have that change come in. And then you take into consideration the amount of social media and just this world wide web, where everything is so connected and your ideas are shared instantly. That’s both a blessing and a curse.

So I really wanted to talk about how these same tactics that we use with our students – to help them understand that they matter – that we have to do the same things with our colleagues, as teachers.

A lot of the time, there’s a lot of influence and attention that’s put on the “school leaders” of principals and superintendents and administration. Sometimes teachers get lost in that, and we forget to value that they’re the ones who are actually changing the lives of so many children day in and day out. They’re the very people that often those kids can come to school for.

So I basically created a mantra that I talked about, how when we are in these situatons when we are asked to become these change agents, often our very first response is, “Well, I’m just a teacher.”

Don’t limit yourself through your fear

Vicki: (agrees)

Brianna: I was just super guilty of that with Carl, you know, and that was the very first thing I told him. “I’m just not good at this.” I found myself saying everything that my students would tell me.

Vicki: (laughs)

Brianna: And I was saying everything that my teachers would tell me. “I’m just not ready. I’m just not sure about it. I’m just a teacher. I’m just a mom. I’m just from a small town.” All of these different things. So after a lot of careful thought, when I was coming up with all of the things that I wanted to say, I decided on this mantra of just what all would we tell people.

My basic idea was that I needed my children – I have two kiddos, a five-year-old and an eight-year old – to be more than “just” a kid. I don’t want their fear to limit them.

I didn’t want my students to limit themselves through their fear.

I don’t want my teachers to limit themselves through their fear.

And so what I do tell them every day is that they are champions for learning. They are a stabilizing force for their students. They are fierce promoters of creativity and curiosity for their content. They are the game changers and the rally makers and the courageous crusaders. They are the spark and the voice and the change that our educational system needs. They are the very model of what our change agent looks like, sounds like, and acts like.

And I basically wrapped it all up by talking about that’s what we are meant to be. If we believe in ourselves and then we share that vision with each other, then that’s how we actually become the true change agents that we are challenged with.

Vicki: Wow. I love that. And there’s so much here. Really what you said stands on its own. But what I love, Bri, is your transparency of realizing that you and your students and your teachers are running along parallel tracks.

I can’t tell you how many incredible teachers I’ve seen at conferences, and I’ve gone up to them after sitting in on their session. I’ve said, “You should be speaking in more places. You should be sharing this story. Please blog. Please tweet. Please share what you’re doing.”

And their (response is), “Well, I’m just a teacher. I’m just not a big deal. I’m not THAT person.”

And they don’t understand that sometimes, we don’t choose the platform. The platform chooses us.

Hello! I'm sorry I didn't send you a message earlier. I had a research lab I had to attend as part of my course grade. 😅 Anyway, what you witnessed must have been tough, even if abuse is not directly your trigger. It seemed to further reinforce your dislike for Karamel, but also upset u (which totally makes sense), so I'm sorry. Supergirl shouldn't normalize (or romanticize) abuse and make it seem like an epic romance. 2.17 sucked. If I can make poached eggs, I'm a changed person? (Pt1) 💙

(pt 2/3) I guess I should have been used Kara’s sudden 180 degree changes in opinion when it comes to Mon, but was still floored when she gave J'onn a lecture about how she needs him. 😑 (Also, wtf Mon is now family, J'onn? Why?). Ugh. There was a lot wrong with that episode. Also, yes! You worded exactly how I feel about that ship. I wish we could have seen Katie as a vampire though…*sighs*. Oh, I don’t agree with what Dracula did (like not at all). I just wanted to see more Vamp! Lucy. 🙂🌷 (¾ uh, I changed it. Now there will be 4 parts) I also attended private school. It wasn’t very preppy, but there were fissures among us because the teachers catered to some. I digress. We could double team Merlin and he’d probably lose 🎉. Also, we somehow ended him before that one unfortunate event (😿) occured , so Morgana is fine/happy and we are her champions. Haha. 😅🗡⚔I seriously think she would have been a better ruler overall. Oh, but it’s not just poached eggs, it’s bacon and coffee and laundry. Truly a changed man who never raised his voice or tried to murder a man for liking his crush. Husband material. The scene where she cries to J’onn that they have to save him because it’s unfair and her fault and it’ll destroy his life and he was only in that situation because of her, this girl I watched yesterday had an almost verbatim reaction to her bf being sent away, down to ‘he was only trying to protect me’ and that was the moment I related to sg, and I was like ‘holy shit, this is horrifying’. Everything in that episode was wrong. Even the Romeo and Juliet exaggerated references (ugh), like, Kara might even be Juliet, but he is not Romeo, he is Paris.

What kind of lab, by the way? And it’s fine, I was singing Camp Rock and High School Musical songs to my dog… she got scared.  😁

We’ve been robbed of a Dracula season two. We deserved to see Lucy being a vampire. I would have sold my soul to see that. Can you imagine? Her going around, seducing people, being hot, biting people mid-makeout… it’s everything I’ve ever wanted. Like, I’ve never understood why straight girls were so into vampires until I considered girls being vampires, and it shifted my entire worldview *gay sigh*. 😊

My private school wasn’t like those things you see in movies and stuff (you could say it wasn’t preppy at all), it was just like a regular school, only very very rich kids and entitled fuckboys. The stuff of nightmares, there was even a few boys who harassed the young female teachers. Though I had no problems with teachers in middle school, it was a Montessori school, so it was the best fit for someone with ADHD, and there were a lot of disabled kids being treated the same as every other student, and that was great, I know a lot of schools in the same area that weren’t like that, including the school I went to high school, where the entitled fuckboy palooza happened.

Here’s the plan: we team up and end Merlin before he even goes to Camelot, everything is solved, go in on his place and save everything, she doesn’t need physical protection, she can handle herself, but she does need love and support, that’s where we come in. 😎😇 She would have been a better ruler than Uther, but after she was wronged by so many and somewhat manipulated by Morgause, she went on a downward spiral. If it was before ‘the unfortunate event’, yeah, she’d be a great queen.

I feel like I’m cheating because I already knew the riddle… but it is kind of the most famous riddle, so maybe it’s okay? and like, usually if I got the riddle wrong I’d be strangled and devoured, so I think the 🌷 and not dying are good enough prizes. Not that I’ll deny anything, I’ll accept rewards in form of pizza and/or cookies

I like Jason and Co, and I liked Camp Jupiter. I don’t think it cheapened the story, I really liked the plot, granted a bunch of teenagers running around and fighting giant deadly monsters and shit might not be the best situation, but overall, as far as I read, I liked it. I think we got enough of the Greeks, and the Romans deserved their chance as well, but I would have liked better if we got a purely Roman story at first, like Jason’s story like we got Percy’s, a book or two about his life at camp Jupiter, preferably parallel to Percy’s, and then the crossover. But that would be a lot to write and I agree with the decision to introduce them when they were introduced. I would like more short stories about the lives of people on both camps, that would be nice.

I have a thing for swords, I really like swords. But I also love archery (not that I’m any good at it) so I think I’d have both, I’d definitely want training in these two. A magical quiver with endless arrows would be awesome, also like maybe a bracelet that turned into a bow and idk I can’t think of anything original to be turned into a sword, but something I could keep in my pocket.The metal(s) would be, for both the sword and the arrows, half Celestial Bronze and half Silver (maybe a side dagger laced with lead or a few lead-laced arrows so I can fix some mistakes around the DEO). 😉

19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic

This is actually a hard one--I get a lot of comments being like, "wow, you did so much research for this fic!" and pretty much all of those are cases where I actually did zero research for the fic and instead did the research for my research and just so happened to leverage that knowledge in fic. If we don't count those cases, a lot of my research tends to be looking into things to make sure that I have the time period/geographical placement of a concept correct.

Probably the funniest bit of research I did was about Italian Scouts for disjoint, wherein I discovered that they have their own sport called Scoutball. (This tragically did not make it into the fic, because Bruno is the narrator and does not know anything about Scouts.) The most frequent piece of research I have to do is frantically googling "WHEN DO BOYS HIT PUBERTY" over and over because my mind is a sieve when it comes to that information specifically.

24. how do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative

Mostly it's just like...doing other things. I know folks who are like "write through your writer's block," but given that I write for fun, I am generally not interested in punishing myself. "Not feeling creative" usually means that I'm swamped with other stuff (teaching, fieldwork, research, etc.), so waiting until I actually have the breathing room/brain space again helps. This might be why it takes forever for me to finish anything. (Sometimes you really do have to let your fields lie fallow, though!)

I know a lot of folks who are like, "If you're feeling creatively drained, consume art!" which is very funny to me because I read a lot (for work and for fun) all the time and listen to one bazillion podcasts. It is not an either/or situation, at least for me.

27. your favorite part of the writing process

I know that it's pretty popular on tumblr.com to talk about how painful and horrendous the writing process is but I tend to enjoy most of it??? (Even when I am sometimes hitting my head against the wall--if I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.) That said, any moment where I can see things coming together is stellar--and fortunately that's a component of a lot of parts of the writing process (planning, writing, editing, etc.)! Something extremely fun and exhilarating about figuring out how it the disjointed snippets in my head actually all fit together into an arc.
