Aloe pearsonii × distans

This is a hybrid I made quite a while ago, and the Huntington Botanical Gardens distributed a couple of the resulting plants under the name 'Hellskloof Bells' (Helskloof is a famous locality where one of the parents grows - Aloe pearsonii). The plants pictured here are siblings of the ones grown by the Huntington, and the two flower shots show the variability of the flowers; the racemes are redder and less elongated in the second one. The cross is notable for how colorful the leaves get, provided it gets plenty of sun. Both parents come from western South Africa, though Aloe pearsonii also occurs across the border in southwestern Namibia.

Aloe pearsonii

This Aloe species has a very localized distribution in the far northwestern corner of South Africa, and across the border in southwestern Namibia. Though localized, it occurs in great numbers at its favored locations. However, an extended drought in recent years has resulted in an alarming death rate, and there are now far fewer plants to be found. It is hoped that years of better rainfall lie ahead, so that the plant's numbers can begin to rebound. Its columns of purplish-red downward-flexed leaves give it a unique look, and its attractive heads of flowers in summer are a great addition.
