Finding a Jackpot
All my favorite songs now a days are not English. It’s either Italian, Swedish or German. I guess because of the poo quality of English music, one just has to look around to find good stuff. And I feel happy that I’ve been successful in the search for good music. Today’s favorite song: From 1981, Romina Power’s “Il Ballo Del Qua Qua”. It’s Italian and the whole of Europe almost knows this song. I’d like to thank Valeria for introducing this song. Then there is another, which has been quite a favorite since a few months, from 2002 “Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime” by Nena and Kim Wilde, it’s a mixture of German and English. I’d like to thank Chrissie for this one. I mean if I start to list down songs, it’ll take a lot of space. But it seems, the journey to embrace songs from a language I don’t know, started from Roxette. Yes, sir (I can boogie). (I still don’t know how to relate this article to Roxette properly) OK, let me share a few names in Swedish music. (Oh google, help me!) - Nordman - I can’t seem to find it being mentioned in the Roxette world. - Lisa Ekdahl - I can;t seem to find her being related to the Roxette world either. - Mauro Scocco - YES! This was the guy in the band “Ratata” with whom Roxette wrote and performed the song “I want you”. - Tomas Ledin - OMG!! JACKPOT!!! Marie along with Tomas, Frida and Håkan Hagegård performed this song together!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_geUxTj09s Oh there is quite a lot of him and Per and Marie on the internet!! Who is this guy! So much so, he is mentioned in RXB: http://roxetteblog.com/2010/05/18/gessle-ulvaeus-and-leding-behind-next-big-thing-contest/ I need to search some more on this Tomas Ledin. Till then, have a great great weekend. PS: WOW!!! I think it’s dear Judith from RoxetteBlog who commented below mentioning “Eskobar” in 2005 in the TDR forum! http://www2.dailyroxette.com/node/11766.html Love and Peace 10/2/2017

2019 Rugby World Cup Final breaks all-time streaming records in Africa
DStv Now served more than 500,000 unique users during match day.
In addition to the Springboks making history at the 2019 Rugby World Cup Finals this weekend, another revolution has been quietly underway. This year marks the point that live-streaming of sports went mainstream in Africa, breaking all-time online viewing records.
Much like the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup campaign, sport live-streaming had a somewhat rocky road to the final. But when things really counted, streaming delivered a record-breaking performance.
In the opening game, as South Africa faltered against New Zealand, DStv Now had its own challenges with some viewers missing out during the first half of the game. Fast-forward to the Final six weeks later and the situation was dramatically different, with viewing breaking all-time records for concurrent users and throughput, and this was all achieved with no downtime or outages.
Speaking about this, Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of the Connected Video division of MultiChoice said:
“Live events are the single biggest challenge a streaming service like DStv Now can face, as the huge number of concurrent users not only puts our systems under unprecedented load, it also strains the systems of the companies downstream from our servers who deliver the stream to customers. It’s fair to assume that the load during the Final was the largest ever seen in Africa, with three times more peak concurrent viewers than in the first game and double the number who watched the 2018 football World Cup Finals. Over the course of the day, we served more than half a million unique users.”
The number of active DStv Now users is four times higher than just two years ago, and there’s no sign of growth slowing. The number of hours streamed in a single day on the service now regularly tops one million, which is more than 100 years’ worth of viewing for a single person.
Talking about what the company changed to see the turnaround in DStv Now performance between the first and last games of the Rugby World Cup, Ekdahl said:
“We were disappointed at the problems we experienced early in the tournament. We’d of course done load testing and provisioned plenty of capacity, but we didn’t anticipate how congestion in one specific system could cascade into others. I’m proud of the work our engineering team has done to learn from that mistake, to rework systems architecture, and also work with partners who deliver the stream to customers to sort out bottlenecks affecting image quality. Our customers rightly expect systems to work, and in the face of record-breaking demand during the Final, DStv Now delivered the goods.”
The data carried by content delivery network partners during the Final peaked at more than 500 Gbps (more than 4,000 GB of data per minute), another record for DStv Now in Africa.
“This was a major test of our systems and the capacity of distribution networks and ISPs in the region. I’m pleased we came out on top and look forward to working with our partners to beef up streaming ability ready for 10 times and even 100 times the traffic we’re seeing now because the one thing we know for sure is that streaming video is going to keep growing,” concluded Ekdahl.

Nodding off at 10 feet above the waves
Nearly 45 years after the fact, this is the first time this story sees the light of day.
I’d flown my usual contract banner that day: pick-up at Colts Neck Airport, fly out to Jones Beach inlet, work the New York beaches back to Coney Island, then turn south and work Sandy Hook to Cape May, drop the banner and fly the airplane home.
This particular day was a little different from the others because I’d been out playing the night before and had only gotten a few hours of sleep. It took a good four-and-a-half hours to do the tow and I just couldn’t keep my eyes open. I must have nodded off a half-a-dozen times or more, especially in the last hour as the day started winding down. It was turning into one of those “I’ll never do that again” days, something I would say regularly until I realized I was going to do that again and stopped saying it.
Finally, I was at the turn in Cape May. I dropped the banner, landed, rolled it up and tossed it into the back of the Cub to head home. It was a little over an hour to Colts Neck. Thankfully, we had enough gas for the trip, so I pulled the prop myself and headed out. We usually climbed up to 400 or 500 feet and followed the Parkway toward home but I had a different plan. I was so damn tired I crossed the beach at Wildwood and dropped down to ten feet. The sun was low off my left. With the doors and windows open, a cool breeze and the near water would keep me awake.
A Cub is a tough old airplane, but…
It was beautiful and fun. Zipping along five to ten feet above the ocean provided the buzz I needed. I made the turn around Atlantic City. It was a seedy place, then. From down on the ocean I looked up at the tower that the terrified diving horse jumped from and I could see the people on the boardwalk and at the concessions. From there it was a straight shot up the beach and less than an hour to home. It was a little chilly, so I closed the lower half of the clamshell door and pushed the power up a little, as if another hundred RPM’s was going to get me home sooner. Out of the right window, I saw my shadow ripping across the water.
BOOM. I awoke from a dead sleep with full power and a lot of back stick. Water streamed back on the windshield and there was some water on my arm. I was wide awake now. I leveled off at 200 feet and took inventory. Best I could tell I clipped the top off of a wave with the propeller. The ocean looked pretty calm. The Cub seemed to be running fine but I pulled the power back and tried to see if the prop was bent. I couldn’t see any damage. I stuck my head out of the window and doors and couldn’t see anything. I very gingerly climbed to 500 feet and pointed the Cub home.
Over the next half-hour I don’t think my heart rate got below a hundred. The Cub had saved my ass again. The empty airplane floated a little and touched beautifully into the grass of the runway. I put it away. The prop showed no damage. It was good.
The next day was rainy. No flying, so it was a good day to change the oil. I popped the drain plug and let the old oil drain into a five-gallon bucket, then pulled the metal screen, the cockroach catcher as Cecil called it, cleaned and replaced it. While I was waiting for each quart of the fresh oil to flow in I took my rag and wiped down the motor mount, the engine and the landing gear. I felt something not right. I looked and to my horror, one of the landing gear tubes had been ripped about ninety per cent through. Apparently, while I was sleeping, the Cub tires had bashed into the ocean and took the damage. My mind started wheeling 100 mph. With my normal takeoff load of forty-three gallons of gas and operating on a rough, grass strip it wouldn’t have taken long for it to fail. Had it failed, it would have probably taken out a wingtip, some struts and the prop, maybe even damaged the center section where the wings attach to the fuselage. The Cub really saved my ass, got me home and the aviation gods conspired to keep me on the ground and find it.
For the rest of the season, while we were debriefing, the talk came around to how that had happened. There were no marks where I had taxied into anything. Cecil and the great Jack Ekdahl, another tow pilot and an unbelievable mechanic, speculated. There was a lot of, “Damn, he must have been moving to do that,” and other such conversation. All I could suppose was that it was wear-and-tear from operating off the rough field. Jack just smiled that Cheshire cat smile of his. He knew something crazy had happened, he just couldn’t figure it out.
