In this week's new Longreads essay, Erika Howsare writes about her search for secular ritual. She did not grow up religious, but in her 20s, she suddenly craved some kind of ritual practice:
My identity was too wrapped up in skepticism of Christianity to join that fold, and I really had no idea what else might be possible for someone wanting to practice ritual, much less within a group setting.
In this piece, Howsare reflects on the seasons, examines her connection to the land, and explores artmaking—through the work of performance artist Meesha Goldberg—as a form of secular ritual.
Ritual is an urge and an act; it’s an aesthetic gesture. As an adult I established the habit of turning my attention to those subtle seasonal details and recording them. I was loving and honoring the land, but this practice still left something undone. A certain clarity, maybe formality. Something like a frame around a painting, or the white on which the red square floats.

i’ve gotta do a presentation on contemporary art in my art appreciation class and our professor gave us a list of artists to pick from. and from there we had to pick an artwork to talk about.
originally i’d picked santiago sierra, but in doing research about him i stumbled across marina abramović. while not on the list of artists, i found myself bewitched by her work. so i asked my professor if i could talk about her and she said “yes. 🙂”
with that context in mind, there’s a group of boys in my class who literally never shut the fuck up.
they just whisper to each other and giggle and annoy the shit out of my for the entire hour and fifteen minutes of class.
but this presentation is my chance for revenge. it’s going to be a two pronged attack.
firstly, when they fuck around by way of their juvenile ramblings, they’re going to find out by way of me embarrassing them in front of the entire class. it’s one thing to have an instructor reprimand you for your behavior, but having a fellow student say, “if your conversation is so important it needs to happen now, might i recommend having it outside in the hallway instead. and if it’s not that important, i recommend waiting until i’m finished to continue whispering your sweet nothings to each other. you’re acting like children and your immaturity is as embarrassing as it is rude.”
secondly, abramović is a performance artist whose work is widely regarded as “disgusting and disturbing” by a lot of people.
people like the boys in my class. the boys who i’m going to make incredibly uncomfortable the presentation down below (there is information i'll be including during the presentation that isn't included on the slides).
i’ll update you all once the deed is done.
marked by endurance, pain, identity, & exploration, abramović uses her own body to challenge the relationship between performer & artist in search of her physical & psychological boundaries–as such, please be warned some of the images feature blood, nudity, weapons, and/or visible distress.
viewer discretion is advised.

On the fourth I played out a long cherished fantasy, and shot every American I met.
As performance art goes I was very successful, my spree lasted all day and I only had two negative responses (out of nearly a hundred.) One white lady told me I ought to have "pre-informed consent" and I was "basically assaulting people," as though splashing a little water on someone is akin to performing a sexual act or invasive medical procedure. Hilariously, the only real negative consequence she could imagine is that I "might ruin someone's nice clothes." It was an interesting statement to make when it was 85 degrees and 100% humidity outside, during a season when it rains multiple times daily. Overall, she set a really creative example of someone using triggering reactionary buzzwords to pretend something playful and harmless was a horrific traumatic event, in an attempt to manipulate the feelings of others. As someone who has been victim of assault, I thought it was absolutely ridiculous and offensive to make light of something so serious by equating its circumstances to a prank.
Really the best thing to do is laugh at that sort of person. I can't imagine being so sensitive and sheltered, they're basically spoiled whining babies crying and making up lies to get their way. For the rest of the day, any time we would have some normal interaction with someone, my friend and I would joke that we "needed consent" or say "you basically just assaulted me" (like when handing someone a beer for example.) If she thinks a splash of water is horrible, she is really not gonna like what I do with my guillotine! (I also almost got shot by the fuzz for having a water gun! Classic stuff.)
If you enjoy my work, please consider donating to me at kaccvcate on cashapp and venmo. With your help, I can arm a mighty war band with these vicious weapons, and we'll make it our sacred duty to ruin the nice clothes of every yuppie in New Orleans. Thanks for reading!
