hi mara, i just wanted you to know i really envy the way you write! it’s beautiful, you’re able to put things so eloquently. i must admit i even checked out your a:n fics, (which, being quite honest, i lack interest in the game) however, that aside, your writing itself is what drew me into them and kept my intrigue. i think i’m most pulled in by your original works though— your work titled “Haunted House” about the shadow arcade is one i haven’t been able to stop thinking about since i read it months prior. the transition from the uncomfortable familiar into the mundane abnormal just hits the spot. it’s definitely my favorite from you, and usually i only frequented your BL stuff before reading this new batch.

which haunted house, though? I wrote two--and mostly intend to keep rewriting the same story as a regular Halloween tradition; I think the first one was stronger but both suffer from "forced marching through a plot to finish up a writing project" feeling; the second haunted house I really wanted to double-down on the blue beard themeing but felt it was all a bit thin in the end; too: in either story I never quite describe the shadow projector in a way that lives up to my vision for it--you know those old wheely carts schools used to bring out TVs for substitute teachers? like one of those holding a projector and several rectangular devices corded up together in some big electronic tangle, and the device is meant to spray a dark light over a person (i imagine the shadowy tumors that come up upon x-ray but encompassing the whole of the scan), and then the images the 'subject' sees within the arcade therapy are constantly sent to a fax-machine like device in the observation chamber and printed for analysis/record; in a direct way, it is a strange abscess opened up in the self for a masturbation--where the malignant desires of the person are meant to become a self-filling pus to fill up that abscess: the necrophile fills themself up with a world of carcass; the murderer fills themself up with blood; the other philes, similarly; and the world and body outside are kept clean while the little cyst capsule swells.

but, every writing attempt to plan something greater and edit for cleaner prose ends with me never finishing anything--see isekai, warhammer fanfic, the latest a:n fanfic (completely understand a disinterest); the BL stuff is funny to mention because i:d been thinking on it lately after revisiting my substack to compile a page organizing all my faith-related writing (work in progress), because i remember what had prompted all of it to be written: there was this really desperate pain inside me to 'connect' with absolutely anything--but there were no people, no relationships, no touch or no outlet and so i thought the best thing to do were to write short rapid stories that would be connection points--this is where i slip into something paranoid, which also i had been thinking about lately; sometime after i went to 'wilderness' and forbid myself from expressing anything to others for a short period of a month or two, and mostly kept all my pains to be expressed exclusively to prayer--and, seemed like i learned some self-coping skill through that, but, too: i gained eye towards hooks i referred to; connective hooks that come from inflammation upon the brain and spirit: pain, and community; all pain seemed to only serve a purpose to lure a soul to express it whether through outreach, art, writing, listening to music, etcetera--and through any selected mean the result would be to connect and let the pain bridge nerves between two people; the outside intellect, the invisible thing outside the two people, would shepherd peoples together with its will that way: my BL writing would not be some honest expression of the self, but nothing more than mind-control to force me to connect with others and become enmeshed in a pain mathematic that runs through the world and feeds flesh to the invisible; carcass: the desired state; for the rotted and depleted mind had no hook for the invisible to rent and were the only thing clean in this world; and, in the desired state: there was no room for passion to write, towards artwork; towards anything; for this worlds electricity is connection, befouled, and the Etiquette guides towards this electricity being dimmed in increments until the bulb goes candle pale and then ghost as its only being of light; --so the paranoid suggests.

Tell your secret admirer about your relationship to The X-Files. This could be about how you got into the show in the first place, what it means to you, or anything else you’d like to share.

My mother was an X-Phile long before I was, she watched from the Pilot on. She was in chat rooms, on alt.tv.xfiles, in fic groups. I was afraid of the theme song at first, so much so that I made her mute it if I was still awake. I started watching in 1997, when I was 11 years old. I don't really remember my first episode - some time during the cancer arc. By the time the summer of 1997 was over, thanks to my mom's recorded episodes on VHS and re-runs on FX, I was fully caught up and 100% a shipper when Redux I premiered, and I've been obsessed ever since. I lived and breathed X-files, accumulated stacks of spiral notebooks full of bad tween fic and drawings, scrawled quotes and logos on the covers of my school binders. I was in chatrooms and on Haven, reading fic on Gossamer waaaaay too young, but everyone there still made me feel like I belonged. I was a weird, lonely tween/teen who had an incredibly hard time relating to my peers thanks to being skipped ahead a grade, but I could pretend Mulder and Scully were my friends. They were the smartest people in the room, they were outcasts, too. If they could be smart and strong, I could, too. The fandom gave me a community when middle school couldn't. I met my best friend in 1999 when she wore an X-Files shirt the first week of high school. I decided to become a doctor because Scully showed me that I could. I watched the way that Mulder and Scully loved each other with their minds and souls, and decided that I would never accept any less for myself.

I feel like I'm rambling, but I cannot understate the influence that The X-Files has had on my life. It was always a comfort for me, even when I was in college and the chatrooms and boards started to go dark. I lost connection with the fandom by the time IWTB came out, but I never loved the show any less. When my husband and I first started dating, I'd invite him over to watch X-Files with me...and we did, for a while, before we got up to other activities. He says I seduced him with The X-Files. It worked!

I reconnected with the fandom in 2023, and I wish so much that I'd known you all were out there this long. Finding other X-Philes, now in their 30's, 40's and beyond, has been such a treasure. As has been finding out that people in their teens and 20's love the show, too! I love seeing younger fans, people who may not even have been ALIVE for a lot of the original run. This is how we survive, how the show lives on.

I wear Mulder and Scully on my skin now. They'll be with me until I die.

2. Tell your secret admirer about your favorite things! Favorite characters, ships, scenes, seasons, arcs, etc.

This is so hard! My favorite will always be Scully but I love Mulder endlessly, even when he's an idiot. My favorite side character is Byers, though it's hard separating him from the rest of the Gunmen. My favorite moments…god, so many. But a moment I come back to again and again is Scully facing down the senate committee in Tunguska to protect Mulder. She displays strength, grace, and integrity that I can only aspire too. Every MSR moment is my favorite. My favorite seasons are 4-6, I cannot choose between them

3. Now what are your least favorite things?

I hate season 9 - its like the writers forgot who these characters were. Mulder would never leave his new family after a lifetime of trauma from the loss of his old one. Scully would never give William up. Parts of season 8 are ok, though the way Mulder is written after his return is absolute character assassination, and I HAAAAAATE the secret brain disease. I don't even acknowledge it. I don't like IWTB much. I HAAAAAATE the My Struggles. I have...come to terms with the breakup, though I'll never like it. The Revival gave us a few great episodes and amazing moments. The parts of the show I rewatch most are season 1-7. Oh, and I hate Diana, but don't we all?

Spice Scale

Salt only – no spice at all please! i.e., general audience rating.

Black pepper – a hint of spice. i.e., teen rating.

Chili pepper – there’s a bit of a kick! i.e., mature rating.

Habanero – definitely spicy, but most spice lovers can handle it. i.e., explicit rating.

Ghost pepper – only for the spiciest of spice lovers. i.e., VERY explicit/kink/POANG rating.

I will read anything Salt-Habanero, for Ghost Pepper it depends on the kink. Not into choking, non-consensual anything, nothing involving urine/feces, not a big anal fan, no physical or mental degradation of any kind. No feet.

5. Angst Scale

Pale blue sky – no angst, all fluff!

Aquamarine – a little bit of angst, maybe some yearning, nothing too heartbreaking. e.g., the various scenes in Mulder’s hallway.

Cascade ocean wave – a moderate amount of angst, e.g. Pusher or Wetwired. Happy ending included.

Sapphire tears – pain slut. Angst with a happy or bittersweet ending. e.g. abduction arcs, cancer arc.

Catastrophic blues – literally why. Lots of angst with some devastation for dessert, e.g. cancer arc but Scully dies at the end, season 8 and Mulder dies.

I'm good for anything up to Sapphire Tears. I'm not here for major character death or devastation.

The canonical MSR song is Walking After You by the Foo Fighters. Lovers in a Dangerous Time by the Barenaked ladies is also them in a nutshell. I'm also a bit in love with "Anywhere with You" by Maggie Rogers for them.

Ohhh I love first kiss/first time, I love love confessions, I love hurt/comfort. I like angst but only if it has a happy or hopeful ending. I looove Only One Bed, or huddling for warmth. I love fluff. I'm not a big AU fan unless it's a fix-it fic (like Mulder not leaving Scully and William, or Scully not giving Will up). I also love slice of life fic, seeing all their lost moments in rental cars and airports just...existing together.

9. What is your favorite color or color scheme? These can be specific colors or general categories, e.g. jewel tones, cool colors.

what's your favorite txf episode and why?

I love this question, but damn it’s a hard one to answer 🥲 I have so many favourites that I really struggle to pick JUST ONE, so I’m gonna bend the rules and give you my favs in each “category”, the categories being MOTW, Mytharc and comedy 🫡

My favourite MOTW, right now, is Pusher. I think Modell is one of the show’s best villains, the episode is really well written and performed, plus it’s a turning point in Mulder and Scully’s relationship. And that final scene! Chills every damn time. This may but the single episode I’ve watched the most.

In terms of the Mytharc eps, I’m gonna bend the rules even more and offer a 3-parter 🥲😅 the season 2 finale/season 3 opener trilogy of Anasazi/The Blessing Way/Paper Clip. This run of eps, for me, is one of the most exciting runs in the show’s history, and was the point during my first watch when I was all in on the mythology stuff. Obviously it falls apart in later seasons, but at this point it was just so damn exciting. These three eps back to back play like a movie and I love them - we get all the hits, Mulder getting his ass handed to him, CSM, Skinner getting involved, Scully being a badass, etc etc. Just so good!

And finally, my favourite comedic episode, and the episode I’ve shown to my non X-Phile friends to get them involved - Bad Blood. Not much to say, it’s just great, so funny, a great little insight into Mulder and Scully’s relationship and how they see each other, and you can tell David and Gillian were having a blast. Love it!
