Fishing in Denham/Monkey Mia
On our second day in Denham, in Shark Bay we left our camp site at 8:00am and drove to Monkey Mia, 28kms away, on the other side of the land. When we arrived there was dolphin feeding so we decided to go and join in. When that was over we headed over to the fishing charter we were going on, the Mac Attack, a well known fishing charter. The other guys on the boat were Garth, the Skipper, Mick and Kim. We headed out in the boat that had two 4 stroke 150 horse power Susuki engines. We were going out 15 nautical miles and saw dolphins on the way.
We stopped and put our lines in, looking for some legendary Pink Snapper, native to Shark Bay only. We felt bites straight away and then dave reeled in a small one, so we knew it was a school of pinkies. The snapper have to be over 50 centimetres and under 70 to be allowed to be caught. In a few minutes I hooked onto a huge one, and I nearly got pulled off the boat. I eventually reeled it in and got it onto the deck. It was a whopper. No less that 60 centimetres, as the least experienced angler of the group, had the first legal fish and my first fish for the day.
After that we moved on for a bit then stopped again, cast our lines in and continued catching and releasing fish. Dave caught one that was 49cm, which was really unlucky, and Mick and Kim both got some fish. A turtle came over and said hello, and so did some dolphins. I caught 2 more snapper, one 56cm and one 58cm. Kim reeled in a monster 70cm one and Mick got a shark, but the line snapped.
On the way back we found a float that belonged to the old pearl factory, that was blown away in a cyclone.
So we came home with 4 Pink Snapper, which was pretty good. (It was Awesome.)
That night we went squidding and I caught 3 squid to add to the tally.
