Main types of plumbing pipes in homes

Whether you're hiring a plumber or tackling a plumbing project, the selection of different types of plumbing pipes can be confusing. After all, the uses of pipes tend to get mixed up. What type of pipe should be used for water supply, drainage, sewer, and even outdoor use? The answer is not as clear as it was in the past, when the main pipes of choice were galvanized steel or cast iron.

PEX Pipes

PEX, or cross-linked polyethylene, is one of the newest and most popular pipes available in the plumbing market. PEX is used exclusively for water supply. PEX has really put the water supply in the hands of DIYers and professional plumbers.

PVC Pipe

PVC or polyvinyl chloride pipe is drain or vent pipe used in plumbing. PVC pipes are moderately easy to install and require nothing more than a hacksaw and miter box to cut. PVC sticks together with solvents.

Rigid Copper Pipe

Rigid copper is commonly used for plumbing in the home. Rigid copper is easily cut with a hacksaw or a special copper pipe cutter. Rigid copper pipe is great for water supply because it poses no health risks.

ABS pipe

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) pipe is mainly used as vent and drain pipe. ABS pipe looks similar to PVC pipe, except it is black and slightly softer. Check local codes to determine where you can use this product.

Flexible Termination

Flexible connectors, are used for end connections on appliances. Such as water heaters, toilets, sinks, etc. They are used for gas and domestic water and are available in many lengths and sizes. BUT local codes must be followed. They are not allowed inside walls or floors.

Galvanized steel pipes and cast iron

Two other types of pipes are sometimes found in older homes and are rarely installed, especially by DIYers: steel and cast iron pipes. Galvanized steel pipes have been used for decades for drainage, water supply, gas supply and a variety of other purposes. Galvanized steel pipe still exists (especially for gas service), but it is used much less frequently and never for water service in new construction or remodeling projects. Each end of the pipe is threaded, and the individual pipes are bolted together with connectors.

we’ve got this room in our house that only exists because the people who owned our house before us built a new master bedroom upstairs and had to extend the downstairs area underneath to have somewhere for the bedroom to sit

it’s an extremely weird room - two of the walls are unfinished wood and the other two walls are 80% windows and a sliding door, and then the floor is half the same cobblestone that’s outside on the patio and half weird concrete and all of it is covered in these horrible rubber mats bc the people before us just used it as a dog run

anyway my long-term intent is to turn it into half a dining area and half a den with bookcases lining one corner and a little coffee/tea bar

and i was frustrated the other day bc these bookcases i wanted that would’ve been perfect are just a few inches too tall - we’ve got about 90in from floor to ceiling and the bookcases are 93in, and every other bookcase i was finding was like 70-ish inches, max, and i want floor to ceiling bookcases, goddammit

so my husband and i were kicking around ideas and i went “y’know at one point i had thought about just building a bookcase into the wall itself” and i could just IMMEDIATELY see the wheels turning in his head

he’s got tools, he’s decently handy. they get pallets in at his work all the time that just get tossed out and he could take them and break them down into boards and turn them into shelves

PVC Heat Tape Pipe installation No help required

Last weekend I put a heat tape inside a PVC pipe to put inside my culvert to un-thaw culvert in the spring so water doesn't run over may drive way or main road. This weekend i put 90 degree end with male plug hanging out for power on a dolly to put in culvert by myself no need for helper.
