Skynet is getting physical
Within my research, I've mainly worked on creating autonomous software entities (entitled intelligent agents) that are able to cooperate with each other and solve problems that are far more complex than those they could solve if they were to operate alone. But so far, all of this has been simulated at a software level. I'm now considering making the leap to the hardware level and reproduce the same behaviours with autonomous robots.
So, to that end, I've been experimenting with the NXT Lego Mindstorms to make sure they have the necessary capabilities to deliver such results. Of course, I've only built little robots that are mere examples of what they can do and nothing really interesting has come up, research-wise, I mean.
But that doesn't mean that it can't be entertaining. Like this sonar-based sentry gun I built for my office:
Students will now think twice before entering... :)

Mac OS X Lion
With the arrival of iOS5, I finally decided to make the change to Mac OS X Lion and although I had to make some adjustments afterwards, the whole thing went quite smoothly.
"Relax, I got this"
First up, the installation process. I fired up the install file and it stated that it needed about half an hour to finish. So I went on with my chores (like bathing the kid and preparing dinner) and about half an hour later I peeked and there it was the new and improved login screen ready to be used.
The obligatory warning about the reverse scrolling thingy was up but in my case, as previously stated, it didn't bother me... at all.
First impressions
The upgrade process was quite painless. My documents and apps were all there ready to be used and apparently nothing was affected with process of changing to Mac OS X Lion (10.7), including my macbook's speed and responsiveness. Some people have reported that Lion has transformed their macs into sluggish machines but I'm glad that my previous ward speed upgrade was good enough to make the change to Lion without compromising performance.
I love the new look and feel of Lion and especially the way it resembles iOS. Since I'm also an iPhone and iPad user, the way the two operating systems merge actually feels natural when switching between devices. This makes the whole Apple experience even more interesting.
Is the screen bigger or are you just happy to see me?
With Lion came full-screen apps and for my 13-inch Macbook this upgrade was very much appreciated. Now that there's no waste in screen real-estate, the screen actually looks bigger and I feel like I got a new machine. And since switching between apps has become so simple with the new gestures, full-screen apps are really a great addition to the Mac OS. The only problem is that I now get really annoyed when a third-party app doesn't have full-screen support.
Now that you mentioned gestures...
...yep, the new gestures in Lion are great but there's one particular gesture that was ruined for me. I got used to using the three-finger right swipe to go back on the browser and other apps (like Finder, Twitter and others...). Since changing between spaces is now done through that three-finger swipe, to get access to that previous behaviour you now have to add the Option key to the swipe.
Talking about annoyances...
...what about NTFS? Sure, Lion has native NTFS support but only for reading not writing, which makes sharing an NTFS drive between a Mac and a Windows machine a real hassle. But worry not, as in most things, it is most likely that someone has already had the same problem on the Internet as you have and this case is no exception: I present you a free solution for getting NTFS working on Lion. I tried it, it works like a charm.
Other annoyances and their solutions
TRIM Native Support also comes with Lion but alas only to Apple-branded SSDs, which is quite ridiculous considering how easy it is to change that. Do not use this previously-mentioned solution since it is not adequate for Lion.
Lion is now a full 64 bit operating system and if your Mac is recent, Lion will boot in 64 bit mode. This is painless for most cases but for particular cases like my own, in which I'm stuck to using the Cisco VPN Client that only works in 32 bit mode, this becomes a problem. Sure, there's a simple solution: when you boot your Mac just hold the keys "2" and "3" at the same time and it will boot in 32 bit mode. But if you want a more permanent solution (or simply because you can't get around to remember pressing 3 and 2 every time your mac boots) here's an hack for that. I tried it and works just fine and my VPN is now working on Lion.
Lion also introduced a new mechanism, called Local Snapshots, that keeps copies of files that you create so as to act as a local Time Machine. Considering that these backups are placed in the same disk as the original files, they do not constitute a reliable backup solution. Plus, it fills your disk and sometimes it will feel like the computer is sluggish (especially if you have a slower hard disk solution) because it is updating those backups. If you feel like this is not that useful for you (because you have a regular backup solution like Time Machine already working) you can turn it off. But this is a decision that only you can make since it may involve loosing information that is important to you. I recommend reading this post on this subject since it is quite complete and very well explained.
More hints on Mac OS X Lion (10.7)
If you need to know more, Macworld has a great compilation of 10.7-related hints here. Enjoy

World's funniest joke
I'm not the one affirming it, it's Wikipedia:
Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?". The operator says "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says "OK, now what?"

Need motivation to exercise? Try candies! GLaDOS would approve.
SPOILER ALERT: if you haven't played Portal or Portal 2 and intend to, do not read this post as it contains spoilers. You've been warned. Carry on. Or don't. Up to you.
If you're a Portal fan you know GLaDOS and if you don't, let me briefly explain it to you. She is an artificially intelligent computer that is responsible for the maintenance of the Aperture Science research facility. Like all artificially intelligent beings in science fiction, she turns on her human creators and wipes them out with a neurotoxin. She later discovers that, for some odd reason, testing humans in increasingly difficult testing environments gives her a sort of rush in her circuits, much like a drug would do for a human. But that rush can only satisfy her for so long since she quickly builds a resistance to it and urgently needs for the human to solve another (preferably more difficult) test to give her a new dose of the rush. The more difficult the test, the bigger the rush once the human solves it.
Today, when I was finished with my running activity I felt a bit dizzy probably because of the dehydration (it was really hot today and I didn't bring any liquids with me) or because my blood sugar was just running low. As I arrived home, I noticed there were some candies I bought for my son(1) yesteday and ate one. I have no words to describe the feeling as I placed the candy in my mouth and started flavoring it... but I'll try to describe it to you anyway.
Imagine you woke up late and had to hurry to go to work in such a way that you forgot to have any breakfast. As you arrive work you suddenly realize that you forgot to finish the report that was due the day before and you immediately start working on it. You finish way over lunch time hoping that you'll finally have some time to eat but, on your way out, your boss asks you to attend this meeting that will probably take two more hours than it really needs to and you start to think about ways to disguise the noise your stomach will make during the meeting. Right after the meeting, when you think you'll barely hold it together just enough time to head to the cafeteria and eat something, your boss asks you to deliver the devilish report and explain him the conclusions. One hour later, probably close to your leaving time, you're done with your boss and are on your way out when you realize that the cafeteria is already closed. The only alternative is the vending machine down the hall that will only have salted peanuts.
I could extend this story a bit by saying you didn't have enough change to retrieve the salted peanuts but I guess you get the point. And the point is... those salted peanuts will taste like chocolate-covered strawberries(2) being fed by topless <insert your dream woman here>(3).
So, getting back to this morning and my post-running candy rush, I had an epiphany. At that precise moment I realized that that feeling is a bit like GLaDOS' continuous pursuit for the next test-based rush. The feeling will be as good as the test is difficult. The satisfaction of eating salted peanuts will be as great as your hunger is. Ergo, the candy will taste as good as you're tired from the exercise activity. This will motivate you to exercize more and savour that precious candy right afterwards.
Obviously, I'm not saying to stuff yourself with candies or other sugary stuff (as that would definitely defeat the purpose of exercising). Just eat that one candy when you feel the most tired. You'll see what I mean.
I'll be running a marathon by the end of next month with this technique :)
(1) You know it's a lie, I bought them for me, but bare with me
(2) Or just imagine something else that presses your buttons if chocolate-covered strawberries is not your thing
(3) It's not my intention to be sexist in any way, so any ladies reading this, please feel free to imagine your dream man at this point

Shit that should not be: in the movies!
There's this podcast I listen called Hollywood Babble-On, which amongst featuring funny aspects of the show-biz like odd news, recent deaths and amazing impersonations by Ralph Garman, they also show funny movie mistakes that will make you wonder how did they end up in the movie in the first place (considering a movie is screened through so many people before they actually reach the theaters).
Here are some of those funny mistakes:
Saving Private Ryan: Watch for the camera crew in the bottom right corner
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: Watch for the girl getting hit in the chin
Back To The Future 3: Creepy kid pointing to his crotch
Wildcats: Woody Harrelson is black and then turns white

I can haz gravity?
A cat can easily rotate itself in order to always face the ground when falling, allowing for it to firmly land on its paws. But have you have wondered what would happened if cats were sudenly in a situation where rules like gravity wouldn't apply?
Lucky for us, some scientists wondered about the same question and decided to put it to test:
