There’s a whole lotta Roy Ayers Connection when it comes to Nickel Bags by Digable Planets (@planetsdigable), even though Roy Ayers isn’t the one being sampled. Rap group Digable Planets were a prime example of fusing jazz and hip hop, and in their two releases in the 1990s, sampled Roy Ayers more than a few times, but in this case they sampled one of Roy Ayers’ greatest muses, inspirations and friends Herbie Mann. While Herbie was most known for his shirtless photos (I have a theory that Will Ferrell as Ron Burgundy’s iconic flute scene was inspired by the persona of Herbie Mann, but that’s another story), he was a fantastic flutist that a pioneer in jazz fusion and incorporating multicultural elements in his music, not to mention giving Roy Ayers some of his earliest credits and features. Herbie’s title track on the 1971 release “Push Push” was a great mix of jazz flute and heavy funk, which was ripe for a hip hop sample. For the song “Nickle Bags” by Digable Planets, Producer Butterfly aka Ishmael Butler (aka @shabazzpalaces) did some deep digging to extract a perfect four count loop sample amongst a ten minute song, added a few more samples that I won’t mention here, and the result was the perfection that you hear in this post. There are many more examples of Digable Planets using Roy Ayers as an inspiration as well as many other jazz greats from the 1970s. Der damalige Hype schlägt sich wohl auch auf die Preise im Vinyl Zweitmarkt nieder... Endlich eine „Blue Note Records“. Allein wegen des Designs würde ich mir einen „Jazz“ Kalender wünschen. So viele, traumhafte Cover alleine von diesem Label. Beide Platten auf der Wunschliste. Disclaimer: Was das hier ist? Nachdem ich 2018 diesen kleinen Kalender gekauft hatte, kam mir die Idee, diesen auch wirklich zu „nutzen“. Was ich dann in 2019 auch umsetzte. Außer jeden Tag drauf zu schauen, ein Kalenderblatt abzureißen, nahm ich mir vor, das jeweilige Album am gleichen Tag auch zu hören. Gleichzeitig schaue ich nach ob ich das Album in meiner Sammlung habe und wenn es mir gefällt, oder ich tatsächlich „schwerwiegende“ Lücken in meinem Regal entdecke, dann kauf‘ ich das Album nach.
