is it too late
pairing: bucky barnes x joaquin’s sister!reader (kind of exes to lovers, but more of ex-almost lovers to lovers)
summary: you hadn’t seen bucky since the fight with thanos and that one-off kiss. but when he hears about you, sam, and joaquin’s fight at celestial island and your brother getting hurt, he comes to check on you at the hospital.
word count: 3.4k
a/n: rewatched bnw recently and came up with this idea

The moment replayed in your mind.
Sam’s voice over comms.
“Joaquin’s down. We need emergency medical now.”
It was all a blur.
Seeing your brother fall from the sky. Sitting beside him in the helicopter as you flew to the hospital. Squeezing his hand, hoping and praying for him to squeeze yours back.
“C’mon, stay with me, please…I can’t lose you.” You whispered into his ear.
Then, they brought him back into the operating room. Your anxiety only got worse when you couldn’t lay your eyes on him.
Sam jogged in shortly after you.
You were sitting on the floor in a ball. He rushed to your side. “Is he going to be okay?” You asked. Tears were streaming down your face as he helped you up.
“Of course he is. He’ll pull through. He’s a fighter.” He assured you. He held your hand tightly as he led you to the waiting room and found a chair for you.
“I’m going to go find a doctor and see what they can tell us. You stay here, and if you need anything, text me.” He said, before jogging off.
You didn’t remember how long it had been when he came back. Time always seemed to move so slow in a hospital.
He sat back down beside you, letting you collapse into his arms as you sobbed. He quietly comforted you. You knew it his counseling background, but you didn’t care. You just didn’t want to feel alone.
“He’s in surgery. They said there’s a viewing room if you want. I’m going to go, but you can stay here if you want.” He told you.
“I’ll stay here. I can’t see him like that— all cut up and everything. But thank you Sam.” You said, giving him a weak attempt at a smile.
Bucky was walking into a meeting with another member of Congress when his phone buzzed in his pocket.
A news article popped up on his phone— news coverage from Celestial Island.
The headline “Falcon, Joaquin Torres, Critically Injured After Fight at Celestial Island”
Oh, no. His heart sank.
His first thought was of you. All he wanted to do was comfort you, but he wasn’t sure if it was his place.
You and Bucky had a complicated relationship.
Years back, you met Sam at a coffee shop. You both hit it off, so you told him to call you if any superhero business ever happened.
You were trained in the martial arts and had been training since you were a child— constantly sparring with Joaquin.
You were the one who introduced Sam and Joaquin years later.
The call from Sam finally came after the Sokovia Accords. You went with him to the airport in Germany.
That was where you met Bucky and the rest of the gang.
You, Steve, Bucky, Sam, and Nat all ended up going on the run together.
You and Bucky quickly developed feelings for each other, but never acted on them. It was weird enough living outside the law. Neither of you wanted to add a relationship to the mix.
When you all landed in Wakanda, ready to fight against Thanos, Bucky was different— more distant.
He knew how big of a threat Thanos was— and he couldn’t hide how terrified he was. So, before the battle, he pulled you into a room by yourselves.
“If this goes wrong, I don’t want to have any regrets.” He said, and then he kissed you. Kissed you like his life depended on it— pushing all those years of feelings into the kiss. To his delight, you kissed him back.
Then, the battle happened.
Bucky was dusted.
And you hadn’t properly seen him since.
It was mostly Bucky’s doing. He was constantly worried that he wasn’t good enough for you and that he had too much baggage.
“I’m sorry, Congressman. I really have to go.” Bucky said, turning on his heel and heading for the door.
“Congressman Barnes. Where do you think you’re going?” The Congressman yelled at him.
Bucky ignored the screams and kept walking. He had to get to the hospital.
Sam heard the door behind him click open. He didn’t even have to turn around to know it was Bucky.
“How’d you know? Super soldier intuition?” Sam asked, not taking his eyes off Joaquin on the operating table. He felt like it was his duty to watch your brother for you.
Silently, Sam was wondering if maybe you’d texted Bucky about what happened and that’s why he was here.
Sam had a front row seat to yours and Bucky’s relationship over the years. He knew how much you both cared about each other— even if you both couldn’t admit it sometimes.
“I saw it on the news.” Bucky said, walking up to Sam’s side.
Silence fell over the room. Bucky watched the surgeons, trying to get any sense of how it was going.
“Does she know?” Bucky asked. His voice came out as soft as a whisper.
He didn’t even the courage to say your name. He hadn’t let himself say your name for years. It was too painful to think about how he blew everything with you.
“She knows. She was there.” Sam told him. Bucky swore under his breath, putting his face in his hands. He couldn’t imagine how traumatizing that must have been for you.
“You should go talk to her, you know that?” Sam said, nudging Bucky.
Bucky jumped up, doing a terrible job at hiding his shock. “She’s here?” He asked, eyebrows raised.
He hadn’t been in the same building as you in years. It put him on edge, like at any second you could walk through a door.
“Go talk to her.” Sam said. It was more of a demand than a suggestion. He noticed that familiar look in Bucky’s eyes. It was like Sam could see Bucky’s fight or flight response kick in.
The thought of facing you after all these years terrified Bucky.
“She doesn’t need me to make her life any more complicated.” Bucky gave the first excuse that came to mind— the one that sat in the back of his mind every time he thought about you.
“She needs you more than you think she does. Trust me.” Sam said.
Bucky froze. If he could get up the courage to talk to you— what would he even say?
Sam noticed Bucky’s hesitation. That counselor training kicked in again.
“What do you I even say to her? How do I explain why I wasn’t there for her all these years?” The vulnerability was clear in Bucky’s voice. This wasn’t him just making excuses to avoid his problems— this was a genuine question that he’d been searching for the answer to.
“None of that matters. Just show her that you’re here now.” Sam encouraged him, pulling him into a quick hug.
Taking a few shaky breaths, Bucky headed towards the waiting room.
He found you alone in the waiting room. You were nervously shaking your leg and fiddling with the rings on your fingers.
He took another breath to steady himself before walking towards you.
You finally looked up when he was about five feet in front of you.
“Hey, gumdrop,” the nickname rolling off his tongue like no time had passed.
You broke. Tears started streaming from your eyes. They weren’t necessarily bad tears. You had hit your emotional capacity worrying about Joaquin. Seeing Bucky just sent you over the edge.
He quickly kneeled in front of you, pulling you into his arms.
You let yourself relax into his grip and let the emotions wash over you. You sobbed into his chest.
It felt nice to have someone be steady for you, so you could let go and stop being the strong one.
He caressed your back, whispering soft assurances in your ear. “I’m here. I promise, I’ve got ya,” his voice brought you more comfort than you thought it would.
“Bucky, it’s so bad. Everything has gone to shit. They don’t know if he’s going to make it.” You rambled in between sobs.
It broke his heart to hear you like that. He hated himself for staying away so long. He should have been there for you.
“Hey, hey, hey, look at me,” he took your hands in his, “don’t talk like that, it’ll all be alright.”
You looked down at his hands cradling your own. There was only one other time Bucky had held your hands— right before the kiss when he said he didn’t want any regrets.
You could see in Bucky’s eyes that the same moment was replaying in his mind too.
“You want to take a walk and get some air?” He asked you softly. He knew it wasn’t the time to delve into your complicated history, but it ate away at him.
He kissed you, so he wouldn’t have any regrets if he died, but he’d had so many regrets since then.
“I can’t leave him.” Your voice cracked as you thought about your brother.
Bucky shook his head, squeezing your hands. “I told Sam to call me the second anything changes. I promise we won’t go far.” He assured you.
You slowly agreed, letting him pull you to your feet.
You and Bucky walked hand in hand. His metal fingers intertwined with your flesh ones. Such a simple gesture that you had dreamed about for years.
You both found a quiet little garden attached to the hospital. There was a small metal sign outside that it was a place for loved ones to have some peace and quiet. There was no one around.
Bucky led you over to one of the wooden benches tucked between two large cherry blossom trees.
“Did Sam tell you to check on me?” You asked softly. He gently shook his head.
“I saw it on the news. I just knew I had to be here, but I didn’t know if you’d be here or not. If you weren’t, I was going to watch over your brother for you.” He told you.
You reached for his hand, placing it on your thigh. The physical touch made you feel a little more grounded and helped to calm your swirling thoughts.
“How have you been?” Bucky asked. He couldn’t express how genuinely interested he was in your life. It had killed him to stay away.
“Just trying to survive really and keeping Sam and Joaquin from getting themselves killed,” you told him, honestly. He could hear the tiredness in your voice. You’d been struggling to keep it together all on your own.
“I’m so sorry. There should be someone looking after you too. You shouldn’t have to do this all on your own.” Bucky apologized.
You refused to meet his gaze— knowing you’d just melt into his arms if you looked into his eyes. “It’s okay, Bucky. It’s not your job to look after me.” You said, pretending the words didn’t pain you.
Bucky looking after you and protecting you like you were his was the dream.
“What if I want it to be?” His voice was hesitant, terrified at how you’d react. Silence. He listened to your breathing as he waited for you to respond.
“What do you mean?” Your voice shook.
You couldn’t get your hopes up only to have them crash back down again.
“I want to take care of you and be that person you can rely on.” He confessed.
You finally looked up at him. His crystal blue eyes stared back into yours, searching your expression for a sign of how you felt.
“Why didn’t you come find me? After that kiss, after everything. Why did you stay away?” You asked him.
He sighed— trying to force himself to be vulnerable with you. He knew he needed to be, but that didn’t help with the knot in his stomach.
“I didn’t want to make your life complicated. I have so much baggage. I can never just be a normal guy.” He told you, giving you a weak smile.
His words echoed in your mind. You wondered if Bucky would ever understand that you never wanted him to be anyone but himself.
“I didn’t want a normal guy. I wanted you, Bucky. I wanted the guy that always knew how to cheer me up and the guy that used to cuddle into my side when we watched movies.” You watched as your words washed over him.
“Well…what about now? Do you still want that guy? Or did you move on?” He asked.
After all these years, you still knew Bucky too well. You could tell he was anxious from the way he furrowed his brow and focused on you.
“Well, I’ve been thinking about our kiss for years. I’ve been wondering what it would be like to kiss without the threat of a purple alien and dimensional war.” You told him.
“Congressman Barnes at your service.” He said, smiling as he leaned in to kiss you.
He cupped your face with both his hands. His lips were just as soft as you remembered. Your stomach felt fluttery as he kissed you with a gentleness you’d never seen before.
Your first kiss was rushed and short— but not this one. This was intentional and meant to express how much you’d both been longing for each other.
Your fingers traced up his sides. You’d started to forget what his muscles felt like under your hands, and you were glad to refamiliarize yourself.
You both pulled away— large smiles on both of your faces. “When your brother wakes up, I’ll make sure to ask him for his blessing.” Bucky assured you, lacing his fingers through yours.
Bzzzz. Bzzzz. Bzzzz.
Bucky’s phone.
You straightened up in your seat. “Is it Sam?” You asked as Bucky quickly answered the phone.
He quietly nodded as he listened to the phone. You jumped up to your feet, feeling like you were about to need to rush to your brother.
“Hey, Buck. They said surgery is expected to last another couple hours, but everything looks good. They have a room set up for after the surgery that you guys can wait in whenever you’re done making out.” Sam explained.
“He’s okay.” Bucky mouthed to you, giving your hand a squeeze. You took a deep breath before sitting back down beside Bucky.
“You spying on us, Sam?” Bucky asked, cocking his head to the side.
“Nope, just a good guess. I was right though, wasn’t I?” Sam teased.
Bucky rolled his eyes and hung up.
“They said the risky part of the surgery is over, and everything is looking good. They expect it to be another couple hours, but the room he’ll be brought to after surgery is ready. Sam said we can go wait in there whenever we’re done making out, direct quote.” Bucky told you.
A giggle slipped through your lips. Hearing your laugh again made Bucky feel warm and fuzzy inside.
“C’mon, let’s go.” Bucky grabbed your hand and led you upstairs to the hospital room.
“When do you have to go back to work, Congressman Barnes?” You asked, gesturing at Bucky’s suit as you both walked down the hallway.
He shook his head, massaging his thumb against the back of your hand. “This is more important. I can stay overnight and keep you company. You’ll probably be here a while.” He said, leaning over and kissing your temple.
“Bucky, you’re a member of Congress. You have more important things to worry about than this. I’ll be fine on my own.” You lied, feeling guilty.
He stopped walking, pulling you to the side of the hallway. “Nothing’s more important than you.” He said, softly kissing your lips.
“Thought I heard you lovebirds out here,” you both heard someone say beside you. You both pulled away and saw Sam sticking his head out of the room assigned to Joaquin.
“You mind keeping her company? I’m gonna run home really quick and pack an overnight bag for her, some pajamas and a blanket and whatnot.” Bucky said, resting his hand on the small of your back.
Sam quickly nodded. “Of course. I’m not leaving any time soon.” He assured Bucky.
“Be back soon, gumdrop.” Bucky said, pecking your lips before leaving.
“He’s still calling you gumdrop?” Sam teased as you walked into the room. You rolled your eyes at him, flicking his arm.
“Why don’t you get some sleep? I’ll stay up.” Sam said, gesturing towards the couch as he sat down in the chair next to the hospital bed.
“You promise you’ll wake me up if there’s an update?” You asked, raising your eyebrows at him. He nodded, assuring you he would.
He helped you fold down the back of the couch, so you could sleep on it like a mattress.
Bucky came back to the hospital an hour later. He had a bag packed with pajamas for both you and him. Along with a blanket, toothbrushes, and your favorite book to keep you occupied.
He walked into the room and noticed how quiet it was. Sam was quietly scribbling away in a notebook. You were curled up lying down, fast asleep. He swore his heart skipped a beat seeing you so peaceful.
Bucky set his bag down, tugging the blanket out. He nestled himself behind you on the couch, throwing the blanket over both of you.
He wrapped his arm snugly around your waist. Even while asleep, you leaned further into his touch. Sam had to fight back the smirk on his face.
You felt someone softly shake your shoulder, waking you up. “What’s wrong? Is it Joaquin?” You asked, squinting at the bright hospital lights.
“He’s out of surgery and awake. Everything went great. He’s here.” Bucky said, softly.
You fully sat up and saw Bucky and Sam standing up. They were several nurses wheeling Joaquin through the door.
As soon as Joaquin’s eyes landed on yours, he gave you a small smile. It made your heart swell. He was okay. He was still Joaquin— happy and upbeat Joaquin.
Once the nurses left, you raced to his side. “Can I give you a hug? I’m so relieved that you’re okay.” You asked him.
“C’mere, sis,” he said, holding his arms out. You gently gave him a hug— not wanting to hurt him.
“I’m glad you’re alright. You really scared us there for a while.” Sam said, squeezing Joaquin’s hand.
Then, Joaquin noticed Bucky standing behind you. “Oh uh…hey, Bucky. What’re you doing here?” Joaquin asked, confused. They knew each other and were friendly enough, but nothing beyond acquaintances.
Most of what Joaquin knew about Bucky, he knew through you and Sam and your friendships with Bucky.
“I heard about what happened on the news. I didn’t want you or your sister to be alone right now.” Bucky said, simply. His hand gently found its place on the small of your back.
“That’s really nice, man. I appreciate it.” He said, reaching out to shake Bucky’s hand.
You tried not to laugh as you saw the way Sam was smirking at you both. Bucky brushed off Sam’s look. This was the moment.
Probably best to do this while Joaquin was still on pain meds.
“While I’m here, I actually wanted to ask you a question.” Bucky started. Joaquin’s interest was peaked.
“I know you’re both as close as family gets. So, I wouldn’t do this without your blessing, but your sister is so special to me. I really would love your blessing to take her on a date.” Bucky said, nervously drumming his fingers on your back.
Joaquin furrowed his brows in confusion. The Winter Soldier wanted to date his sister? He hadn’t been around for all your years on the run, so he didn’t know anything about the romantic tension between the two of you.
He looked over at Sam. “The three of you are really close, so you’ve seen them together. Does he treat my sister right?” Joaquin asked Sam, knowing he’d be the expert on the subject.
Sam just smiled and nodded. Then, Joaquin looked at you, studying your expression. “You really like him, don’t you?” He asked, grinning at you. He was able to read you better than most people.
“Yeah, I do. I have for a really long time.” You said, smiling back at him.
“Whatever approval you need to make my sister happy, you have it.” Joaquin said, genuinely. You were beaming. You couldn’t help it. Bucky wrapped his arm around your waist, tugging you into his side.
“Feels kinda weird you asking me for my blessing when you’re old enough to be my great grandpa.” Joaquin joked.
Yep, he was back. Happy, upbeat Joaquin.

In which I am predictable
Fic concept where Puck has had respiratory issues ever since Meghan met them that are in the category of ~eh, mostly under control, and she’s learned not to question, up until circa the Iron Bug plotline/her and Puck exploring the possibility of romance, at which point their random coughing fits merge into coughing up blood. Which. Concerning. But Puck insists it’s fine. And when she brings it up to nurse Stacy she looks long suffering and pitying but not like it’s unusual, just talks about upping Puck’s treatment.
Cut to book 3 at Leanansidhe’s safehouse, Meghan and Ash are fully in their romance era, Puck is helping train Meghan. They’re at a weird impasse where Meghan isn’t mad at Robbie anymore but hasn’t really forgiven them or addressed the issue. Coughing fits are worsening, Meghan really wishes Puck would address them, and
Wait are those flowers.
(They’re forget-me-nots, specifically.)
Oh my god you have Hanahaki, Meghan says.
Literally shut the fuck up, Puck says.
Oh my god, your love for me is killing you isn’t it, Meghan says.
I will pay you 20 American dollars to pretend you didn’t see this, Puck says.
I’m a terrible person for not being able to requite your feelings, Meghan says, spiraling.
It’s not for you, don’t worry about it, Puck says.
Wait what? Meghan says, because this love triangle has been consuming nearly every thought in her brain and the idea of Robbie having an active social life outside of her is admittedly kinda weird, which she’s going to unpack later.
Puck proceeds not to tell her who they love and why it’s killing them, just that it’s been like this for a while and sometimes gets better/sometimes gets worse, PLEASE don’t ask pressing questions, this is totally normal for them and they’re used to it and it’s not going to stop them from being helpful. So it’s fine.
Meghan tells Ash, because she’s gotta. Ash is trying to timeline it out because oh god his best friend is dying if Puck dies from this then he won’t get to avenge Ariella, so he has to figure out who it’s for and how to solve it like Right Now, Fuck the Iron Kingdom, who is it for and why has it been going on for so long, and why is Puck so unconcerned about it. One thing leads to another, Meghan winds up going well Puck and Leanansidhe seem close, so maybe she’ll know.
Lea I will give you 25 American dollars not to be a snitch, Puck says.
Wow. All three of you are baby idiots, Lea says, who’s been watching her horrible little sibling figure do the equivalent of breathing in weedkiller incense for about 3 centuries and hoping it kills their forget-me-not garden faster than it kills the rest of their body. It’s very clearly for Prince Ash. They developed it within the same year Ash swore his murder oath.
Turns out being in close contact with the person who swore to kill you and that you have a terminal flower disease for is not an ideal position to be in. And Puck’s illness has progressed much more quickly than it had been for the past three centuries with everything that’s gone down. So Stacilia’s treatment has been falling behind.
You all suck, Puck says, bordering on tears and/or hysteric laughter. And it’s not like I like him romantically anyway so it hardly matters anymore, he doesn’t care for friendship when there’s a girl to fall in love with. Let me tend my shitty flower garden in peace.
Which. Rude. But not an entirely inaccurate reading of the situation.
There are no easy ways out of this.
#iron fey#platonic hanahaki is my favorite trope#Puck has developed an emotional attachment to the forget-me-not garden#hey at least it’s proof that they can love people (spoken like a self deprecating aroace)#also they can’t remove them because then they won’t have issues with trying to kill Ash during their fights so it has to stay in#(and they won’t turn their back on their friendship with Ash#even if it hurts.)#Robin Goodfellow#Prince Ash#Meghan Chase

Thinking more thoughts about This in light of the back and forth I have with @booksandberries. Sensei herself points out that Sasaki's growth is due to both Miyano and Hirano. And the thing with Miyano is almost certainly coming from a place of physical/sexual attraction because it's so hard to re-watch/re-read Sasaki and Miyano and not see how immediately Into Miyano Sasaki is, and letting his guard down is really the only way that is going to go anywhere. So Sasaki's pretty incentivized to get close to Miyano in order to get what he wants - which is that closeness itself. (I also someday want to make a post about my ideas about Sasaki's sexuality because in terms of this series he's the character who sort of gets the least amount of screen time actually "struggling" with the fact that Miyano is a guy. Like he does but it gets over it a lot quicker than most. Kagiura may as well but Kagiura's attraction to Hirano isn't rooted in physical attraction the way Sasaki's is for Miyano???? IMO)
But then: Hirano. The light novels give us plenty of glimpses into how they interact when they're alone, right? Their first meeting, the aftermath of The Fight, studying together, and so on. Sasaki appraising Hirano's abs and thinking about how ripped he is. Unlike with Miyano, Sasaki does have a guard up when he first meets Hirano, and he honestly keeps it up for a good while longer. He doesn't really divulge too many of his feelings to Hirano, and even though Hirano sort of watches the whole ssmy relationship develop (and even tries to impede it early on bc he doesn't trust Sasaki - maybe he can smell the lust pheromones?) they never Talk About it. And then one day - they do. "Did something happen between you and Miyano?" "Yeah, I confessed to him."
The volume of trust!!!!! The way Sasaki didn't hesitate. The way he relied on Hirano, and a little of that was rooted in his own desperation, because he knows he fucked up - but he also perhaps trusts that Hirano will help. Because that's what Hirano immediately does - he takes out his phone and tells Sasaki to fix it. If nothing else, he trusts that Hirano won't be Weird about him being in love with another guy - which, fair, Sasaki has been watching the whole Ritual going on with hrkg for months now, but plenty of people have internalized homophobia. It took a long time and a lot of work to get to the point where Sasaki so easily admits his feelings and his mistake to Hirano - and Hirano just takes it in stride. The trust Sasaki has in him is never misplaced. Hirano can hold that shit for him.
It does make me a little upset that this doesn't go both ways - I can't think of any moment in particular where Hirano allows Sasaki to help carry his burdens. And I kind of think, for all his griping, Sasaki would want to. But Hirano is so cool, calm, collected, so in his own head and capable of working through his own shit, he barely asks for advice - and when he does, it's super cagey and not obvious in the slightest...
But then again, when Hirano is looking for a birthday gift for Kagiura, he asks his friends for ideas, vaguely. What does Sasaki say he would want? Concert tickets. What does Hirano ultimately get? Basketball tickets. I don't think it's a coincidence.
Please join me in sshr brainrot hell we're open 24/7 :)

Been rolling this author commentary in my head since rereading the volume (it's Sasaki and Miyano, either volume 8 or 9).
I love that Harusono notes the ways that both Miyano and Hirano have had their impact on Sasaki; Miyano "encourages him to drop his guard" because Sasaki feels compelled to get closer to him. But with Hirano he "doesn't always put a guard up" because Hirano is a safe person to be himself around. Hirano doesn't expect him to be anyone but himself and doesn't ask him to change
#sasaki to miyano#hirano to kagiura#sshr#sasahira#sasaki shuumei#hirano taiga#is any of this well articulated? no#have I even scratched the surface of what I want to say about these two? absolutely not!

canon verse roast lore summarized (if we can even call this a summary)
at some point while robin's touring the cosmos, sunday mentions how he's concerned about her and that she should get an assistant or something and she eventually agrees. enter me, a traveler from (redacted) that she meets shortly after she has that conversation with sunday. we chat and i mention that i've been traveling the cosmos, with the desire to see as much as i can, but sometimes it gets a little rough because i gotta pay to get around or something and she ends up asking me to be her assistant so that i can still travel and not worry as much about paying for it. it takes some convincing from her but i eventually accept.
she introduces me to sunday the next time she returns to penacony and He Is Not Happy. because he had assembled a group of candidates, all of which were very trusted and capable members of the family and instead robin chose me, some rando from god knows where that she barely knows. robin, does defend me though (by this point we have known each other for a few months), but that doesn't stop sunday from trying to intimidate me into quitting. but i grin and bear it because i like robin and rationalize that i only have to deal with the control freak siscon when we are in penacony.
so naturally he and i are not friends. we play nice in robin's presence for her sake, but otherwise... i spend as much time away from him as i can while on penacony. i think that when robin has the accident we get into an extremely heated argument and i say some things that end up improving his opinion of me. or something. LMAO. after that we clearly are still not friends but are much less hostile with one another (or more it's like sunday is less hostile toward me and i, in turn am less hostile toward him).
around the time of the charmony festival, robin's schedule calms down a lot and she tells me i can take a vacation during the preparations, and while i object initially, she insists i deserve it and that she can handle things with me gone since it's not that busy and that sunday will be there to help (i protest because sunday's sure to be busy). eventually i end up relenting, saying i'll be back at the start of the charmony festival. meaning during the events of the penacony arc i am off planet— i actually go back to (redacted) for some time. so i get to hear about sunday and everything on the news. L M A O. and it's all very insane to me. can't wrap my head around it but the first thing i do is call robin.
sometime later, robin tells me sometime later that she's thinking of going on a hiatus, which means i don't really need to attend to my duties as her assistant. but she says that, in the meantime, she can put in a good word for me to board the astral express so that i can keep traveling without worrying about expenses too much (she naturally withholds the information that sunday will also be on the train).
so i board the train and, sunday is there and i'm just like 'what the fuck' because i know robin did that on purpose and the first chance i get i call her and demand an explanation and she all but asks me to help sunday on his journey the same way i helped her and i can't ever say no to robin. so. lol.
at this point we start to actually get to know one another. since sunday is more relaxed there is way less hostility (when i find out they hit him for the train i tell them good job and they should do it again if he gets out of line). somehow i end up hanging out with sunday a fair amount but i like the rest of the ae crew a lot so i hang out with them lots too... sunday has varying opinions (feelings) about that lmao.
this is the point where all the thoughts get muddy but, and i did mention this before, march (and maybe tb) try to play matchmaker. i keep in contact with robin a lot (via text). unbeknownst to me, march is also contacting robin with regards to her matchmaking hijinks.
but where the game is currently, i go hang out with sunday and welt. welt, unfortunately has to play babysitter since sometimes sunday and i have snark-offs.
#sunday roast#sunday develops feelings first but i think that he's conflicted about it#march picks up on it and tells him she'll help out since pretty girls are messengers of love or something#and so she arranges a sleepover for all the girls on the astral express and uses it to ask me about sunday#by that point i haven't really thought about him much lmao though i say he's very handsome#while she's hounding me tb (and sunday who prtends he's not there willingly and dan heng who is there semi-unwillingly#are trying to eavesdrop from dh's room#i think i say to march that i do not think that sunday knows what romantic feelings are which greatly offends him lmao#so i think after that he's trying to rizz my pants off#at some point we go to (redacted) and contend with my past#sunday does NOT like (redacted) at all#feels threatened#uhhhh there was something else i wanted to say.....#OH. i think there are similarities to office au roast#except since i'm not sunday's employee in canon i can disrespect him almost as much as i want#it's all subject to change depending on how the story goes....#and how hoyo wants to break my canon but i can pray...#anyway that's like 80% of canon roast lore#please do not laugh at me.....

i said this YEARS ago when the 'vibes based literacy" discussion started because i had been reading about dyslexia to try to help my partner at the time, who was undiagnosed: the book about dyslexia that i was reading described precisely the techniques used in the "contextual guessing" reading education system, but as dysfunctional adaptations by dyslexic children. the contect guessing and memorization thing is a way of teaching entire generations of children to be functionally dyslexic, a profound and devastating disability, when they do not have dyslexia and do not need to have it. it's horrifying. it was how my partner read things, and watching him try to read something out loud was extremely demonstrative of the struggle he was having.
ken goodman probably had dyslexia and didn't know it, it's the most common learning disability in the world, an estimated 20% of all humans on earth have some degree of it.
In the paper, Goodman rejected the idea that reading is a precise process that involves exact or detailed perception of letters or words. Instead, he argued that as people read, they make predictions about the words on the page using these three cues: 1. graphic cues (what do the letters tell you about what the word might be?) 2. syntactic cues (what kind of word could it be, for example, a noun or a verb?) 3. semantic cues (what word would make sense here, based on the context?) Goodman concluded that: Skill in reading involves not greater precision, but more accurate first guesses based on better sampling techniques, greater control over language structure, broadened experiences and increased conceptual development. As the child develops reading skill and speed, he uses increasingly fewer graphic cues.
he's completely wrong, this not how fully literate people read. this is how dyslexic people read. fully literate people are using phonics and the alphabet all the time, that's how we read so fast and so easily, even texts that we're unfamiliar with or that aren't in our native language. i can scan a page of italian, french or norwegian and get the gist of it even though i don't speak the languages. i can sound out those words and pronounce them, even if im pronouncing them incorrectly, just by reading the actual letters and phonemes.
relying on context to predict which word comes next is what leads to the kind of aphasia dyslexics often exhibit not only while reading, but when speaking aloud. my partner would swap words that were contextually correct but not what he actually meant all the time. for example if he wanted me to hand him a blue comb lying nearby on a table, he would say "could you please hand me the green brush?" or if he was describing a cat he saw, he would often swap in another contextually-related word, one that sounded the same, like "bat", or one that was conceptually related but incorrect, like "dog". as a result i had to ask him to clarify or repeat himself many times to figure out what he was trying to say. it created profound problems for him and separated him from me and everyone else. the worst part is that he was barely aware of this. when he was driving it was extremely difficult for him to follow or give directions because he would swap out "left" and 'right" randomly.
you cant actually read like this.
She thinks the students who learned three cueing were actually harmed by the approach. "I did lasting damage to these kids. It was so hard to ever get them to stop looking at a picture to guess what a word would be. It was so hard to ever get them to slow down and sound a word out because they had had this experience of knowing that you predict what you read before you read it."

No Man's Land
Jack Abbot x f!Reader
5.1k || All my content is 18+ MDNI || C.W.: mentions of blood, mentions of guns and shootings, mentions of death/dying/coding, CPR, anxiety about partner's safety, Jack's traumatized, reader's traumatized, mentions of dissociation and compartmentalization, poor description of medical events, potentially incorrect medical descriptions/knowledge, very very light smut, angst, age gap kind of implied with Jack but not explicitly referenced, no use of y/n or related, not proofread, no beta, I think that's all but if I missed any please (nicely) let me know.
Summary: This is my Pitt-Fest-But-Not fic. Development of your relationship through vignettes of the past and conversations between Jack, Dana and Robby. There's a shooting where you work. Jack is at the ED when the dispatch comes in and is terrified when he can't get in touch with you.
A.N.: If my Robby reads like John Carter I'm sorry, except that a little bit I'm not. I feel like I'm struggling with my Jack characterization but can't tell if that's just me hating everything I do. This is my take on one of my fave tropes where reader is in mortal danger. I needed a physical location that could be associated with reader and settled on a courthouse, but what it is reader does there is not described. Probably (definitely?) needs a part two. If you get the nickname, thank you, I feel seen. If you don't I explain it at the end. This is absolutely something I would call him, in part to fuck with people who know his real name. I would love to know if you enjoyed and to hear any thoughts you'd like to share.
“He has a girlfriend,” Robby smirks at Dana.
She blinks at him. “I’m sorry, I thought we were talking about Jack Abbot.”
“Oh we fucking are.” Robby stifles his smirk and forces his lips to remain closed and as neutral as possible.
“You’re shitting me.” Dana’s incredulous look breaks Robby a bit and he starts to laugh, tries to turn it into a cough when both he and Dana look up to find Jack staring at them as he takes his snow dusted beanie off. He gives Robby a ‘really?’ look even though he knew Robby would rat him out to Dana the second Robby had dragged it out of him.
Dana looks back at Robby. “Who? How did they meet?”
Robby holds up his hands. “You now officially know as much as I do about her.” Dana makes a noise of vague discontent but knows Jack well enough to know Robby is telling the truth. That’s all that’s been revealed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It’s not worth it,” you whisper. Jack blinks and looks around, unsure if you’re talking to him. He has no idea who you are, has never seen you before in his life but it appears that you are in fact whispering to him in the middle of this bookstore.
He raises his eyebrows. “It’s not?”
You shake your head, give him an almost conspiratorial smile. “No, he must have gotten a new ghost writer. It’s really bad in comparison to his other stuff. Save your time and money. I’ll give you a summary right now for free if you’re that curious.”
Jack smiles to himself a little bit as he sets the book back on the shelf. There’s something about you, your smile, the way you just randomly spoke to him. He’s drawn to you. An alarm goes off in some part of his brain telling him to ignore it, ignore you, he could get hurt. He pretends to weigh his options as he turns to face you fully. “How about for a cup of coffee?”
Your brows furrow in confusion for a moment. There’s simply no way this unfairly attractive man is asking to buy you a cup of coffee. “The summary?” You clarify. “That I’d give for free. You want it to cost a cup of coffee instead?” You let out a nervous laugh and some part of his heart aches because you’re so adorable. “I just want to make sure I understand before I potentially make an even bigger fool of myself.”
“Yep.” He can’t help but laugh a little. “You give me the summary over coffee. Actually, you know what? You’re going to have to give me a recommendation too because now I’m going to have nothing to read.” He clicks his tongue at you.
“Well,” you laugh out, all breathy as you try to pull yourself together. “You drive a hard bargain but I think I’m willing to accept those terms…” you glance at his name badge, “Dr. Abbot.” You give him a full smile and Jack knows then and there he’s totally fucked in the best of ways.
“Jack.” He smiles at you as you both begin walking towards the café. “Call me Jack.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything quiet enough after handoff, Robby walks out with Jack into the morning sun that does little to warm the breeze pulling leaves off the trees. “Any chance you can cover a shift on Thursday night?” Robby is asking, yes, but he knows it’s not really a question, Jack is always willing to work.
“Can’t.” Jack says simply, shrugging his shoulders. “Sorry.” There’s an expectant silence that hangs between the two as they keep walking.
“Care to elaborate?” Robby finally asks.
“No.” Jack turns and smirks at him. “It’s none of your and Dana’s business.”
“Ha!” Robby laughs. “So it’s her, it’s about her! The ever elusive girlfriend. Will we ever get to meet her? Or does she not want to meet us? Is she real?” Jack stops walking and gives Robby one of his looks. “Holy shit, is it someone here?”
Jack snorts at that. “No it’s not someone here. She’s not even in the medical field.” He sighs, half longing and half resignation of some kind. “She’s honestly dying to meet you guys, especially you and Dana, but I’m trying to protect her from this hellhole. It’s hard with schedules too, to find a time.”
“That’s such fucking bullshit,” Robby laughs. “Are you afraid to truly commit? Think bringing her here will make it too real?”
It’s a valid question but one that Jack nevertheless resents. “No, actually, if you must fucking know Thursday is our one year anniversary. We have plans. So you’ll have to find someone else to cover. But I’ll bring her around soon,” he laughs through his nose to himself at your stubbornness, “if I don’t she’s liable to just show up one of-”
“A year?” Robby laughs, incredulous. “A fucking year? How the hell did you hide it for three months before I dragged it out of you?”
Jack ignores him. “Also, I’m moving to days. It’s better for us.” He’s so nonchalant about it, just states it like he’s saying the sky is blue, like it’s not going to make Robby’s eyes widen and mouth drop open like it does.
“I don’t,” Robby huffs a laugh, “I don’t even know where to fucking begin.”
“Then don’t.” Jack smirks, starts to walk again while Robby stays frozen, running a hand through his hair. “Go do some actual work.”
“I thought you found comfort in the darkness?” Robby yells after him.
Jack slows and turns around but keeps walking backwards, one hand holding the strap of his backpack to keep it over his shoulder. He glances down at his phone and the photo of you that is now his wallpaper. He smiles to himself a little, yells back. “Guess I find it somewhere else now.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You giggle, honest to god giggle and Jack could lose his damn mind as he nibbles at your collarbone. “You know if my anatomy class had been this fun, I might have become a doctor too.”
You’re laying on your back in bed as Jack kisses your sweat slicked skin all over as you both come down from your last round. He’s taken to 'teaching you anatomy' like this, identifying different parts of the human body with his mouth.
“Hmm,” Jack hums against you. “I’m glad it wasn’t then. Fuck doctors.” He starts to kiss down your chest.
“That has become quite the favorite pastime of mine, yes,” you smirk. “Fucking one specific doctor, actually.”
“Getting fucked by one specific doctor more like it,” he murmurs into your sternum. He kisses laterally, lips hitting your breast and moving towards your nipple.
“I think we’ve established what those are,” you moan softly as he takes your nipple into his mouth. You let your hands run through his salt and pepper curls that you adore so much.
“Can never be too thorough.” You giggle at him again and can feel him smile against you. “But fine, you want something new?” You nod, let your nails scratch gently at his scalp.
“Nipple,” he kisses your nipple and then down your torso to right above your belly button, “to navel is no man’s land.” He continues to lavish kisses on the soft skin of your stomach before looking up at you when you don’t respond.
“I can’t tell if you’re fucking with me or not.” You eye him with mock suspicion.
He laughs and it’s your favorite sound in the whole world, you swear. Well maybe second, only behind hearing him tell you that he loves you.
“I’m not. Nipple to navel is no man’s land. It’s a real thing. It’s one of the worst places to get shot or stabbed because there’s so many organs that could be hit and the place we’d expect to get hit would depend on whether the person was breathing in or out at the time, whether their lungs were inflated or deflated. And we generally have no way of knowing. It can be difficult to get clear imaging.” He starts kissing lower, down below your belly button, rubbing his stubble along your skin to tease you as he gets lower and lower. “It’s never a good time. Lots of poor outcomes.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s supposed to be his day off and yet Jack finds himself staring at the board and running a hand over his face. “It’s still so fucking weird seeing you here during the day and it not meaning something catastrophic has happened.”
Jack turns to look at Dana. “I’ve been working days for a month now and it’s my day off.”
“You can go, we’re fine for now,” Robby nods at Jack. “Thanks for the brief assistance brother.”
“No, no,” Dana interjects, “he’s not allowed to leave until we nail down a time to meet his girl.”
Robby raises his eyebrows and starts to tilt his head and open his mouth to agree with Dana. A dispatch comes through before anyone can say anything else and Dana grabs it, pinning Jack down with her eyes, daring him to leave before discussing meeting you.
“Saved by the bell,” Jack huffs, taking his stethoscope off and starting to walk away.
“Shooting at a courthouse,” Dana relays to Robby, “not a mass cas, just a few people, two a little iffy, one they’re already doing CPR on, a few caught in the race to get out. Two dead on the scene.”
It takes a few seconds for Dana’s words to truly register with Jack, but when they do his hearing fades to only a sharp ringing in his ear. This wasn’t happening. He’d been so reticent at the beginning of your relationship, waited so long to give in and define it and hand his heart over to you, terrified he’d lose you because of himself and who he was, his imperfections, his past, his trauma, his PTSD, his baggage, as he thought of it. He feels so stupid now, in the moment, not having worried about how he could lose you from a random act of violence, that in the moments he can’t be there to protect you somebody could come in and rip you from him. Just like that. With the pull of a trigger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You know, I can confidently say this is the most unique date I’ve ever been on,” you tease Jack.
“Hey,” he pants, “me teaching you CPR is a great date.”
“It would be better if you took your shirt off,” you whisper and wink at him before letting your eyes linger on his arm.
“If I did that you’d be so distracted you’d learn nothing,” he smirks at you, sweat glistening on his skin just a little. Just enough to drive you nearly feral for him.
“I think I’ve got the compressions part down, but I may need more help learning the mouth to mouth part.”
He rolls his eyes at you. “You’re ridiculous.”
“You fucking love it,” you shoot back at him, leaning into his space and bumping him with your shoulder.
He can’t help but kiss you. “Yes,” the word is muffled against your lips, “yes I do.” He gives you a firmer kiss this time before he pulls away. “But really. You should know how to do it, just in case. It will help you feel in control in the moment if the need for it ever arises. You’ll know what to do.”
You bite your lip and smile at him.
“What?” He eyes you with suspicion.
You shrug. “Nothing, I just love you so much. Sometimes it overwhelms me, how much I love you.”
He can see it in your eyes, how much you love him, can almost feel it physically squeezing him like a tight hug. He’s really not sure what he ever did to deserve you or your love. “I love you too, Doll.”
“I love you more, Peter.” Your face pulls up into that usual self-satisfied and silly grin you get sometimes when you call him that nickname. It’s a recent thing. You’re calling him it more and more though, it’s becoming a natural way of referring to him. From anyone else he would hate it, hearing it between another couple would make him roll his eyes. But from you? He loves it more than you’ll ever truly know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jack spins around.
“Jack you can still go, we’ve got it covered.” Robby looks at Jack for a minute and then meets Dana’s eyes as she looks to him after taking her own look at Jack.
“What courthouse?” Jack asks. It’s quiet, controlled and clipped and almost missable in the chaos of the ED. He’s not looking at either of them, staring past them at a wall with a chest heaving more and more by the second as his face grows paler.
He tries to keep it together. Dana will say the name and it won’t be your courthouse and he’ll go straight to your actual courthouse, grab you, take you home and never let you leave. A perfectly reasonable reaction, he thinks.
“Jack-”
“What fucking courthouse?” It’s louder this time, almost enough to pause the chaos of the ED.
Jack’s voice drips with what sounds like rage to most of those who hear him but is unmistakably fear to Dana and Robby.
Neither of them have ever seen Jack like this, this scared, struggling this hard to keep it together, truly raising his voice for anything other than to quiet down an unruly patient. His eyes find Dana’s and they’re glassier than she’s ever seen them, the intensity of his gaze making it painfully clear he’s hanging on every word and the wrong ones will shatter him.
She swallows and opens her mouth and Jack knows what she’s about to say before she even says it. And she does. The name of your courthouse.
“I’ll triage.” He says it before Dana has even finished, the words hollow and breathless and commanding all at once. He spins and starts off to the bay doors with nothing more. He obviously knows from the report Dana gave that they won’t need triage. He just needed to get out of there and try to create an excuse to stay in the ambulance bay. He knows Robby won’t let him, that Robby and Dana already know you’re at that courthouse, could be a victim.
Robby and Dana share another look, So you work at a courthouse. This courthouse. “Fuck,” Dana mutters, “I really hope we don’t end up meeting her today.”
Jack’s hand dives in his pocket as he strides to the ambulance bay. He already knows in his heart that there’s not going to be a text from you saying that you’re okay. He hasn’t felt his phone buzz. He never even kept his phone on him until you.
Even though he knew he wouldn’t have any messages, waking his phone and seeing none hits him like a freight train all the same, right in the chest. It threatens to bring him to his knees, make him sick, but he can’t. He sets it all aside. If you do come out of one of the ambulances he can hear in the distance you’re going to need him at his best. But what if you’re one of the two people dead at the scene? He has to shove that out of his mind too, can’t give into the complete panic that threatens to consume him.
Disassociate. Compartmentalize. Do the job. ABC. Assess. Stabilize. Repeat.
His fingers fly across his phone automatically, calling you having become so routine. He prefers it so much to texting, hearing your voice, communicating more directly. “Call me,” he starts, “the second you get this message. Or fucking text me,” his voice breaks, “please. Fucking please.” He hangs up and calls again, knowing he’ll get your voicemail again but trying anyway because it’s all he can do.
He’s helpless, powerless, he can’t do anything to try and save you and that threatens to swallow him whole.
Your voicemail recording telling people to leave a message plays again and all Jack can wonder is if this is all he’ll have left of your voice in his life. Your voice on your mailbox, maybe some voicemails you’ve left him, videos, voice memos you’ve sent. All distorted by recording, not your real voice. He can’t remember what your real voice sounds like all of the sudden. What your laugh sounds like, how you sound when you’re sleepy or in the throes of pleasure or telling him you love him. God, did he even tell you he loved you the last time he saw you, when he said goodbye?
“I need you to call me,” he says into the phone again, pauses. “I love you.” He takes a ragged breath in and speaks through his teeth. “I love you so fucking much, so you have to be okay and you have to fucking call me.”
He sends a series of texts asking you to call him or text him or call the hospital or do anything to let him know you’re okay, asking if you are okay, asking where you are as though you’re going to respond. He already knows you’re in the back of one of those ambulances because of fucking course you are, because he’s not allowed to have anything good in his life apparently. How could he be so stupid to think differently?
“Hey, we don’t need triage for this. The numbers are controlled.” Robby walks out to stand next to Jack in the ambulance bay. “If you want to stay you can, but you can’t wait out here to see who shows up, you have to-”
“Yeah, yeah, jump on the first patient that pulls up, I know, I got it,” he interrupts Robby.
There’s a silence as Robby passes him a gown and ties for him before he does the same for Robby.
“Jack, if she’s in one you cannot-”
“Like fuck I can’t.” It’s just a statement. Cool and collected and a projection of indifference. It scares Robby more than if Jack had yelled.
“No, actually brother, you can’t. I’m telling you right now. You’re not working on her. We don’t work on family, on significant others, and you would tell me the exact same thing. It’s too risky, you’ll be too clouded.” Robby watches Jack’s jaw clench and roll as he stares out at the street.
He wants to argue that of course he’ll be clear, he’ll be focusing on saving you, he’ll have never been so clear in his life. But part of him knows that seeing you like that on his trauma table, your blood all over the table and him and his hands might make him freeze.
“Fine.” Jack whispers. “But if she’s,” Jack has to pause and take a shuddery breath. “If she’s gone or really going and it’s inevitable you have to let me in. You have to let me try to save her. You have to let me code her, Michael.”
He can taste the rising bile in his throat just at having to talk about coding you.
The first ambulance pulls up before Robby can respond and Jack’s on it so fast Robby’s surprised Jack doesn’t get smacked in the face by the door opening.
It’s not you. It’s someone who is very much not you and is clearly one of the iffy ones.
Disassociate. Compartmentalize. Do the job. ABC. Assess. Stabilize. Repeat.
Jack forces himself to go emotionally numb as he listens to the paramedic rattle off vitals and history, trying so very hard to focus on this, something he can do, even if it’s not for you. By the time they hit trauma one Jack’s fine and in full swing, running it like he would any other trauma. Nobody on the team in the room with him suspects anything is amiss.
He hates the way he can’t see the other’s who come in, that he has to stay with this patient until they’re stable and can’t go looking for you. He chastises himself for not having brought you here before or at least having you meet Dana and Robby. They don’t even know what you look like, couldn’t identify you.
“Jack!” He glances at Dana who stands at the door as he preps for the chest tube. “What’s her name?”
He yells your name at her, impassive and stoic as he reaches for the scalpel, ignoring the looks everyone throws each other at the slightest tremor in his voice.
“I’ll look for her.” Dana promises. He doesn’t respond. He can’t. He’ll fall apart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The restaurant you’re at has to be the fanciest place you’ve ever been to. It’s the hottest place in the city and you have no idea how Jack snagged reservations here for dinner to finish out celebrating your one year anniversary.
The lighting and low hum of other patrons talking to each other and glasses and silverware and plates tinkling is cinematic. You feel like the main character. But then that’s always how Jack makes you feel.
“I got you something.” He pulls out a wrapped rectangular object.
You click your tongue and tsk at him. “We said we’d do them at home! I didn’t bring yours!”
“I know. I have something for you at home too.” His eyes sparkle in the flickering candle light, a little smirk pulling up. “I didn’t mean for it to be a double entendre, but both are true.” You snort a laugh at him and take the gift from him. “Open it.” He’s still smiling, eyes still sparkling, but there’s something there. He’s nervous. It makes you even more curious.
You carefully unwrap the object until it reveals itself as a hardcover book. That same one Jack had in his hand a year ago and that you told him was bad and gave him a summary of over coffee.
“Oh, Jack,” you say softly, eyes getting a little watery. It’s so perfect. So sweet and sentimental. The book that brought you together, that gave you each other. It’s almost like a physical representation of the foundation of your relationship in a way.
“You have to open it,” he instructs you in a whisper.
You raise an eyebrow but do as he says.
‘Move in with me?’ is written on the blank first page.
You look between the page and Jack. “Is this?” You look back at the page and then up at him again. “Are you really asking…?”
He nods. “Move in with me. Or move somewhere with me, we can get our own place, it doesn’t have to be my apartment. We basically live together anyway at this point. Let’s just make it official, yeah? Wherever you want, you can decorate however you want. Just as long as it’s our place.”
You bring a hand to your mouth for a second before using your napkin to dab at the inner corners of your eyes to stop the tears from falling and look back at him.
“You’re a romantic, Jack Abbot,” you hum all dreamily.
“You better not tell anyone. Can’t have you ruining my street cred.” He smirks, but his expression and the way he fidgets show he’s still anxious. “So?”
You realize then you never actually answered him. Sniffling a little laugh and letting a few tears fall you give him his answer, voice thick and full of emotion. “Yeah, I think I’m willing to accept those terms. I’d love to move in with you… Peter.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He hears you counting to yourself before he sees you. “One, two…”
It’s not loud, just said in a normal voice, softer if anything because of how you’re panting, but Jack is so on edge and so desperate to find you he’d subconsciously been listening closely to his surroundings, military training kicking in. His head snaps to you and he doesn’t even know what to think when he sees you being rolled in on top of a gurney, performing CPR that would rival the quality of his own.
“Why is she..?” He hears Robby question the paramedic as you roll in.
“She was performing them just as well as we could and it was better to just scoop and run,” the paramedic explains. “She must have had one hell of an instructor.”
“Peter!” You yell, without looking up, not sure if he’s still here. You’re so used to it by now that the nickname is just what comes out of your mouth as you look for him. He’d texted you to let you know he was going in for a bit.
Jack could sob and the entire team in the room with him can feel a crushing tension shatter. Maybe he does get a little teary just from the sheer relief. He tells himself it’s sweat in his eyes.
“Yeah Doll?” He yells back, not giving a fuck about everyone hearing him call you Doll, and you calling him Peter, knowing full well he’s going to have so much explaining to do about this entire situation, the confusion in the room palpable.
“I’m okay!” This time he does laugh to himself.
“Yeah I’d say so,” he mutters, smiling. He’s still anxious to see you, get his own eyes on you, feel you with his own hands.
It’s only about thirty more seconds before his patient is stable enough and he can rip his gloves and gown off and start putting fresh gloves on as he walks into the trauma room you’d been wheeled into. Normally he’d yell out for someone to talk to him or ask what they’ve got but not this time. This time he doesn’t even care about who’s on the table, only the person who came off it. Only you.
You’re standing to the side now, watching Robby and the rest of the team work, impassive as pink tears stream down your face from the dried blood on it. You’re just so fucking overwhelmed by everything and now that you’re not doing CPR everything that’s happened is hitting you at once.
Jack says your name as he moves to you, needs his hands on you.
“Are you hurt? Were you hit?” He rushes out. His voice brings you back and you look up at him with wide, terrified eyes. He goes to look you over but you latch onto him, hugging him tightly, shaking a bit.
“I’m fine, I’m okay, I’m, I’m sorry,” you start to rattle off, fisting at his scrub top and clinging to him like he’s the only thing keeping you tethered to reality. In the moment he might just be.
He hugs you back just as hard, kisses the top of your head. He doesn’t care who sees right now, all he cares about is you. “It’s okay, you have nothing to apologize for. I’m just so fucking glad you’re okay. I thought… I thought you were…” He doesn’t have to finish, you know what he means. “I can’t fucking lose you. I love you way the fuck too much.”
You’ve been so wrapped up in each other neither of you have noticed that Robby’s patient, the one you were doing CPR on, has started to code again. “Abbot, need you here!”
You let him go, nod at him. “Go on,” you whisper, “I’ll be right here. I’m okay. I love you more.” Jack nods at you and walks over, jumping in and assisting Robby.
It’s once you’re out of Jack’s arms, away from his warm body and more grounded in reality that you notice how cold you are, how you’re swaying because he was supporting you far more than you realized, how lightheaded you are, how your abdomen and chest really fucking hurt. You chalk it up to the adrenaline wearing off and being sore from the chest compressions you just did.
On the other side of the room an instrument tray gets knocked over, metal hitting the floor in a loud clang. It startles you, makes you jump and twist quickly to see what it was, if it was another gun, another shot. You feel something almost tearing, a sharp pain across your abdomen and lower chest, a feeling of sticky warmth against your shirt.
You sway a little, start to realize how much worse the pain is now. It’s bad enough that you can’t even make noise to express the pain. There’s no air in your lungs, you swear. You realize your lightheadedness is now much, much worse, that you’re shivering from how cold you are. Or are you just shaking? You can’t tell. It doesn’t make sense. The room isn’t even that cold. You shouldn’t be so cold. Not unless.
You pull your shirt up slowly and look down and run your hand over your skin and sure enough, there’s a bullet hole seeping blood, about half way between your nipple line and belly button, skin now covered in a dark bruise.
You cough a little, it’s quiet. It starts feeling like there’s water in your lungs. Like you can’t get any oxygen in even though you’re in a room full of it. The metallic taste in your mouth is what manages to seep into what’s left of your consciousness next. You cough again, into your hand, and feel something wet hit your skin. Blood.
It hits you. You’re drowning in your own blood. That’s why it feels like you can’t breathe. You’ve been shot. In a bad place, one of the worst places, Jack had told you that night. You get scared, feel your heart pounding. It feels like you’re dying. You don’t want to die, don’t want to leave Jack. You’d just finished moving into your new place together, were going to spend all weekend unpacking and painting and getting furniture where you wanted it. You were going to make your home.
Time. You were supposed to have more time together.
“Hey, Jack,” you slur softly, struggling to keep yourself standing. Luckily he hears you. Your use of his first name and the slur to your voice has him panicking again already. Time slows as he turns around to take you in, eyes going from your face and the blood coating your teeth and trickling from your mouth as you try and smile reassuringly at him, down to your torso where you’re still holding your shirt up just enough for him and everyone else in the room to see the bullet hole and bruising marring your skin. “I think, I think I’m not good, it’s not good.” Your vision tunnels so fast you can just barely see Jack’s expression of sheer abject unadulterated horror and panic as you get out your last words. “Nipples to navel… no man’s land.”

*Break the water surface
The original clip is probably: his own light reflects from the skin to the water surface, outlining his soft blue outline, which rises slowly, gently, quietly from the water. You looked along the glowing blue smooth curve until you finally saw him one-a pair of ruby-colored eyes staring straight from the water.

You were in your room, listening to music, headphones in and volume on full blast while you sat on the edge of your bed, flipping through your playlist when some movement out of the corner of your left eye broke you out of your focus. You glanced up at your partially open door to see your older brother peeking through and tapping on the barrier to try to get your attention.
He was finally home for summer vacation from his second year of college. "Hey!" You jumped up, taking out your earbuds and throwing your arms around him in a big hug. "Hey, little sis. It's been a while," He greeted you, not having seen you since winter vacation earlier that year. Behind him was Matt Sturniolo, his childhood best friend who you hadn't seen in even longer.
"Hey, Matt," you said, your gaze traveling over towards your brother's best friend, who looked as attractive as ever. You'd always had an insatiable crush on him, and it didn't help that he had more facial hair, more tattoos, and a more chiseled jawline since the last time you'd seen each other.
He always hit like a drug, like a habit you couldn't kick, like a long-term addiction you couldn't shake. He flooded your system with cascading waves of dopamine whenever you looked at him and interacted with him. You craved him. However, you knew you couldn't ever pursue him.
Your brother had always warned you about him. "I know as you get older and start developing feelings for boys, you're gonna wanna start dating. But whoever you date, please don't date my friends, especially not Matt Sturniolo. I know he's my best friend, but the kid's bad news. He's only after one thing when it comes to girls, and he's off-limits to you," you recalled your brother saying to you.
After you'd started going through puberty, your brother had been hyperaware of the way your behavior suddenly changed towards his best friend. He'd started picking up on the way you'd been interacting differently with Matt, trying to get his attention more often and trying to find excuses to be in the same room as him, which terrified him.
You didn't know what he meant by that, only after one thing? You didn't know what that one thing was, but you secretly found yourself curious about it, and you wondered if it was something you could give to Matt. But you nodded at your brother, promising to stay away from Matt despite the way your stomach dropped when you looked at his friend.
"Hey, you're all grown up," Matt replied, bringing you back to the present. He subtly checked you out before pulling you into a hug, leaning down, hooking his arms around your waist, and picking you up. He let out a soft grunt as he lifted you into the air. He loved the way your body felt writhing against him as you giggled. "Put me down," you half-heartedly said, secretly loving the you felt in his arms.
Your brother shot him a look as he placed your feet back down on the hardwood floor beneath you. "I'm going off to college after the summer ends. Can you believe it?" You asked, swaying back and forth. "No, I can't. The boys at school are going to adore you," Matt said, nibbling on his lip and doing nothing to conceal the hungry look in his eye.
You didn't notice, but your protective older brother did.
"Hey, Matt and I are gonna go grab some dessert. He's gonna stay the night here. We'll be back," your brother said, wrapping up the conversation so he could go scold Matt in the car and remind him of the rules about hitting on his little sister. "Can I come?" You wondered, your eyes lighting up at a chance to be in Matt's presence once again. "I don't think that's a good idea," your brother started to say.
"Come on. Let her tag along so we can all catch up. I'll buy," Matt offered, looking back over at you with a smug smile. "Fine," your brother hesitantly said, leading the three of you out to the garage. You sat in the backseat in the middle and clicked your seltbelt closed.
On the way to get a sweet treat, Matt sat in the passenger seat with his head craned all the way around, his eyes lingering on your sweet treat between your thighs. You'd forgotten you were in a skirt and were innocently sitting with your legs splayed out while your pink panties peeked out from underneath the short fabric.
Your brother, who was focused on the road, was completely unaware of the show you were unknowingly putting on for Matt.
"So, what have you been up to since the last time I saw you? You got a boyfriend now?" Matt lustfully cooed, not that he cared if you did, while studying the outline of your puffy lips through your underwear. He bit down on his lip while his cock jumped in his jeans at the sight.
Your brother glared over at him, recognizing the tone of voice he was using on you. The same he'd use when trying to take girls to bed. "No. All the boys my age are so immature. I don't want to be with any of them," you said, making a face. "Oh really?" Matt replied in a smug voice.
You guys had arrived at your destination, and after you guys had all ordered your desserts to go, Matt was handing his card over to the employee and giving you sly looks while he undressed you in his mind.
The three of you piled back into the car to head home. Matt watched intently as you swirled your tongue around on your strawberry ice cream, imagining you were lapping up something else. "Thank you for the dessert, Matt. It's so good," you said, letting out a soft moan while you savored the taste. You weren't trying to tease him, but you were driving him wild.
"Oh, a little is dripping onto the sides there," Matt pointed at the melted, pink liquid leaking down the waffle cone, and you licked a long stripe up the dessert, cleaning it off with your tongue. "Almost got it. Give it one more good lick," he urged you.
"That's it. Good girl. You got it," Matt purred, licking hot fudge off his spoon as you dragged your tongue up the length of your cone once more. His eyes flashed back to your panties, and he noted a small damp spot on the front of the pink cotton. Blood rushed to your cheeks as Matt watched you.
Your brother reached over and slugged Matt in the arm, almost making him drop his hot fudge sundae. "Hey!" Matt exclaimed. "Hey, why'd you do that?" You innocently asked, secretly enjoying the way Matt was watching you and talking to you. "Don't worry about it. Matt's just being a perv," your brother scoffed.
You realized where Matt's eyes kept traveling back to when he wasn't watching you clean off your cone. Suddenly, you became self-conscious, slamming your legs shut and going back to eating your ice cream in silence while you looked out the window.
It's not so much that you minded Matt viewing you that way. It's that your brother was picking up on it. You avoided eye contact with both of them, worried that they had noticed how much you liked when Matt had called you good girl.
No one said a word the rest of the awkward car ride home. Later that night, the boys went into your brother's room, which was only ever occupied when he was home from school, to play video games.
You desperately needed to take care of the aching feeling between your legs you'd been wrestling with since Matt had picked you up earlier when you'd hugged him. You reached into your pink panties and started slowly rubbing yourself while you pictured Matt.
On the other side of the wall, Matt and your brother were tapping away on their controllers in front of their game. Your brother was quietly berating Matt for the way he was looking at you and talking to you earlier while they waited for the next round to render.
"Dude, that's my sister. Please don't try anything."
"Relax. I'm just having a little fun making her blush. She's really cute when she gets all worked up," Matt smugly responded. "Gross. Don't talk about her like that. If you lay a finger on her, our friendship is over. I'm serious," your brother said in a somber tone. How about in her? Matt silently wondered, smirking to himself.
"Seriously, I'll kill you if she loses it to you," he told Matt sternly, insinuating you were a virgin. "She hasn't lost it yet?" Matt's gazed off into the distance as a perverted scene unfurled in his mind. "Gross. Forget I told you that. Just stay away from her," your brother said, eating his words after he remembered Matt had a thing for innocence corruption.
"Don't worry," he smirked, holding up both hands up in a defensive position, despite the thoughts going on behind his eyes about stuffing you for the first time. "I'm going to bed after this game. I feel sick after watching you with her today," he grumbled, rolling his eyes.
Matt brushed off his friend's comments. It's not that Matt didn't value his friendship with your brother and love him dearly. It's just that he was weak to his carnal desires, unable to say no to them and unable to turn down temptation when it was taunting him. Especially when it was forbidden fruit.
After they finished their final round, they shut off the light and Matt laid down on the floor next to your brother's bed with a blanket and a pillow. Your brother had fallen asleep and started softly snoring, and right as Matt began to drift off, a low hum woke him up.
At first he thought he was getting a call, but when he peered down at a black screen after picking up his phone, he realized the vibrating was coming from somewhere else entirely. It was low, unwavering, and seemed to be coming from the other side of the wall, in the direction of your bedroom.
Matt stealthily got up and slipped out the room. When he stepped into the hallway, he realized a dim light was pouring out of your room and into the hallway through a crack in your door you'd left open a bit on accident. Matt approached your room and peered in through the sliver of space between the door and the frame.
There you were, bathed in warm candlelight, laying on top of your blanket naked, legs spread, and steadying a vibrator on your clit. Matt smirked to himself as he studied the way your thighs quivered while you used your toy.
Your lips were fixed in an o shape, your cheeks were pink, and your brows were pinched together. You shut your eyes and threw your head back as Matt's name slipped through your slew of whimpers.
He poked his head into your room, pushing the door open, and he slowly invited himself inside, approaching you to get a better look at you. He loved the way your slick folds glistened in the soft lighting, and the way your breasts started to subtly bounce as you started to violently shake.
You were right on the verge of greatness, slowly nearing a climactic ending, when your eyes fluttered open, and you saw Matt standing at the foot of your bed, staring down hungrily at your pussy. Immediately, you grew insecure about being watched, chasing away your orgasm.
"Matt!?" You said his name again, but this time in an aggravated whisper. "Poor thing. All alone in here. Why play with those toys when you could have the real thing?" Matt cooed, reaching for your pink vibrator. You handed it to him while it was still buzzing, and when he rested it back onto your clit, you let out a relieved sigh in response.
"Good girl. Just lay back and relax. Just here to help," he softly directed you. "Oh, Matt," you breathed out softly, lifting your hips up and grinding up against the vibrator in his grip. You glanced down at his smirk and how his eyes were fixed on the way you were clenching around nothing.
With his free hand, he took his middle finger and started teasing your folds with it. Your eyes widened as he sunk his finger into your drooling cunt. For a moment, you thought you must be dreaming. You let out a loud, satisfied sigh as he pushed it all the way in.
"You gotta be quiet, sweet thing. If your brother had any idea what I'm doing to you right now, he'd kill me."
You nodded at him and placed your palm over your mouth to muffle all the noise you couldn't keep yourself from making. "It's gotta be our little secret," he grinned at you as he added another finger, and you could feel the cold metal of his rings on the warm flesh of your thighs as he pumped them back and forth into your heat.
"You're so tight," he whispered, relishing in the way you clenched around his digits while they started to stretch you out. He shut off your toy for a moment, setting it off to the side, and repositioning himself.
He lowered his head between your legs while he fingered you, and he started to work his mouth on your special place, rolling his soft tongue over your clit and manipulating your folds with it. He closed his lips down around your bundle of nerves and gently hummed against it, recreating the feeling of the vibrator, only much better.
You arched your back up off the bed and rolled your hips forward, chasing the sensation of his tongue exploring places no one ever had before. "Like that, princess?" He asked you in between licks. "I love it," you whispered back.
Your eyes rolled back into your head, and your legs started to tremble as he continued stimulating you with his mouth and his fingers. "Good girl. You got this," he cooed while you got close. His fingers curled so perfectly, hitting all the right spots while you kept your hand held tightly over your mouth, desperately trying to avoid waking anyone up.
"That's it, pretty thing. Cum all over my fingers," Matt purred sweet nothings from between your legs while he felt you starting to tighten around his fingers. "Relax. Let it happen. Give in to how good it feels," he talked you through it while you shook beneath him, experiencing your very first orgasm given to you by another person.
You let out a few soft whimpers that you couldn't keep to yourself while you steadily throbbed around Matt's fingers that had slowed to a stop once you'd finished. He licked them clean, and he complimented your flavor as he started pulling his cock out of his sweatpants.
You couldn't see much in the low candlelight, but it was intimidating-looking. You could see the veins that texturized his thick shaft, and you could make out how swollen the mushroom-shaped head was.
"You ever had one of these in here, sweetheart?" Matt cooed, giving you a devilish smile, and introducing his bulbous tip to your slick hole. You bit your lip and shook your head from side to side, confirming your innocence to him.
"Oh, poor thing. Let's fix that. You're way too cute to not be getting fucked," Matt groaned as he pushed it in. You squelched around his thick rod, and he shoved it all the way in until it filled you entirely, the base of his dick resting against your entrance.
You felt your pussy expanding around him as he started rocking his hips back and forth, hitting a pleasant spot deep inside of you. You held your breath for a moment, still adjusting to the size difference between his fingers and his cock, and when you exhaled, a few stifled sounds came through. It hurt so good.
"Good girl. You're taking me so well. Can't believe this is your first dick," he praised you softly while he delivered a few harder thrusts. Soon, there was no pain at all, only pleasure.
He grabbed you by your waist, steadying himself while he started to speed up, getting caught up in how good your virgin hole felt wrapped around him. He watched as he pumped back and forth, fixating on the way you coated his length in your arousal.
"That's it. Take it like the good girl you are. I know you've been dreaming about this for years," he smirked at you, and you eagerly nodded in response. It was like a fantasy come true, losing your virginity to a forbidden man, your brother's best friend, while your brother slept soundly one room over.
The bed started gently rocking and making a soft rhythmic thump thump thump as the headboard made contact with the wall. But each of you were too caught up in how incredible the other person's body parts felt to care about the noises you were making.
Matt picked up your toy again, and after propping your right leg up onto his shoulder to get a deeper stroke, he turned on your vibrator once more and held it on your clit again, sending your eyes rolling back in your head and causing your jaw to fall open in sheer desire. You'd never experienced stimulation quite like this, and you didn't know how badly you craved it until now.
When your gaze shifted back to Matt, he was peering down at you with glossed over eyes and a pleasure-filled expression. You were both at the gates of heaven, about to immerse yourselves into a shared orgasm that neither one of you could fend off any longer.
"That's it. Be a good girl. Finish all over my forbidden cock," Matt whispered, all too aware of the dynamic that existed between you, mocking your brother's attempt to keep you two apart, that instead drove the two of you into each other's arms in a twisted self-fulfilling prophecy.
You both tensed up, Matt injecting you with his seed and filling you to the brim while you throbbed around him, milking him dry. You guys softly moaned in harmony, your bodies moving in unison. The sound of the bed thudding against the wall came to a stop, and the buzzing of your toy dropped off when Matt killed the power on it.
"Wow. Your pussy is so pretty pumped full of my cum," Matt whispered with an edge of thrill in his voice as he pulled his meat out of you and watched the way it leaked out of you while you continued clenching around negative space, recovering from the orgasm Matt had just given you.
He was still admiring the mess he made inside you that started to leak onto your sheets when a stern and infuriated voice boomed from behind him, sending chills down his spine and sending a sobering wave of fear through his system when he realized the two of you had been caught. It was your brother, watching from the door way.
"I thought I fucking told you to stay away from her, Sturniolo."

I was like 11-12 years old when I figured out at a boring-ass church activity that you could put rocks into little plastic spoons and then pelt people who annoyed me with them. I did this for the rest of the activity, and at Sunday dinner the next night was bragging about my victory (cornering the mean kid who picked on my youngest brother and pelting him with rocks). One of my cousins was like “no way, that sounds SO fun! Let’s do that RIGHT NOW!” So we grabbed spoons and went and got pebbles from the back yard and launched them at each other.
The problem was my grandma sold her soul for the world’s most resilient plastic spoons so we could launch those fuckers HARD. I gave out welts like candy on Halloween, and I got them back in kind.
So we resorted to taking cover and giggling until we got whacked, then yelping, then returning fire.
My cousin hid in my grandpa’s little fishing boat. It was a good boat, but simple and honestly underused. We didn’t know the little windows on it, meant to keep the wind out of my grandpa’s face while he drove, were cracking. However, they were definitely cracking. Eventually it became obvious and we realized we had been being dumb.
This was NOT the first time in my life I’d been dumb roughhousing and broken something, and I had developed a reputation in my family as being “suicidally honest” so I was the one to deliver the bad news. My grandpa let out a pretty good chuckle and said it was OK, tousled my hair, and asked my grandma to bring me cake. I am not kidding. I learned later he hated his boat and only bought it for his kids’ sakes, since he thought everyone needed to know how to fish. At the time though I was just bewildered and pleased at my good fortune. FINALLY, at long last, being honest and telling the truth about breaking something expensive was getting me cake. I knew if I kept trying it would eventually serve me, and now so had CAKE. I was pleased as could be.
My dad, on the other hand, was livid. He LOVED that boat. He spent several weeks each summer recovering from breaking ribs in that boat every year for about 7 years prior to this incident. He had great memories and memories that boat. So he told my Grandma NO cake for me AND that I’d be coming by this weekend to fix stuff around the house and pay for the broken window with my babysitting/lawn mowing money.
Obviously I was devastated, but that felt more in-line with the way things normally went when I broke something expensive so I just figured it was OK. My grandpa gave my grandma a look and sadly said “Ok, have her here on Saturday to help me with some yard work.”
That Saturday my dad woke me up at 6:00 sharp and drove me, sleepy and bewildered, to my grandpa’s house. He was mumbling under his breath the whole time but he thought he was teaching me consequences for my actions so he was ultimately OK with it.
We get to my grandpa’s house at 6:15. My grandpa is outside with a ladder hanging Christmas lights. The lawn is freshly mowed, the trees and garden are weeded and well-tended to, the carnations in the front yard look immaculate, and my grandpa has this giddy mischievous look on his face. He tells me he was so excited that I was coming over that he couldn’t sleep, so he did all the yard work himself. He asked me to help him put up Christmas lights and decorate the Christmas tree, which I did, then said that because I was such a good helper I could have some pancakes for breakfast. I was sent home with the slice of cake I had been denied the week before, wrapped to keep it as fresh as possible.
The whole way home my dad looked a little miffed, but told me that he was glad I had been honest and was proud of me for helping grandpa. I know he wanted me to Learn a Lesson™️the cowboy way, like he had as a kid, but didn’t have much room to complain since I’d still been Put To Work.
I think that was a lesson for both of us, although I’m not totally sure what it was supposed to show me. I think it was my grandpa’s way of showing my dad that discipline without tenderness doesn’t count as much. He died last year and I miss him terribly, as does my dad. I hope that my story of victory, drama, punishment, and ultimately a secret second victory is meaningful to someone else out there, but if not it still means a lot to me ❤️

thinking about a yandere who was cursed by the gods (something similar to medusa), not because he did anything wrong, but because they found him too beautiful and too tempting.
what was once a god of a man was now but... still a handsome man, just with cursed eyes. with eyes that turn anyone into stone the second he gazes upon them. everyone who he once knew were now nothing more than mere statues, having glanced upon his beautiful eyes that now bring death.
he has chosen to live in solitude, away from everyon- well, not really. it's just that the once lively place he lived in.... wasn't so lively after all. i mean, they all turned into stone 💀
anyway, he shut everyone out because #1 they were all dead and #2 he didn't want to lose another person that he loved. what better way than to just... not interact with society and become a social hermit?
enter, you.
little ol' you who accidentally wandered into his place. he was flabbergasted and terrified. shit, he didn't want to kill an innocent person! so he tried to scare you away by making weird noises and blockign off your path while simultaneously not showing his eyes.
but wow, you just kept coming closer and closer!
"stay back! i'm warning you! you'll regret it!"
he tried to cover his eyes, tears threatening to spill from them as he absolutely majestiv form trembled on the spot. man, was he really about to take the life of another innocent person who didn't deserve to get turned into stone??
then you told him you were blind and he felt the fear leave his body as fast as it came.
from then on, the two of you chatted daily, talking about your different lives and such. it helped him regain a sense of... normalcy that he thought he'd forgotten. it was nice having you around.
so much so that he actually started to develop feelings for you. feelings that were so deep and obsessive that others would've probably ran away. not you though, never you. you were the only one to stay by his side despite his unusal predicament. perhaps the gods were sorry for playing such a cruel fate on him and decided to give him a blessing?
wrong.
"sweetheart! sweetheart! it's a miracle!"
your voice snaps him out of his daze, filling him with a giddy feeling that he's come to love and crave. oh you are just so delightful! he swears he could just lock you up to coddle you in hugs and kisses for the rest of his miserable little life!
"darling? what miracle?"
he pauses, feeling his heart drop into his stomach the second you enter his room without your usual glasses on. wait... what are you-
"i've regained my sight! bless the heavens above i-"
"no! no! no! don't look!"
but it was all for naught. you had already turned to stone.
"fuck! why did this happen?! no no no.... please wake up. please, you can't leave me too!"
the beautiful man sobs, cradling you in his arms as his salty tears fall onto your now stone cold cheeks. he cries and begs, voice growing softer and softer as the sun begins to set. how could the gods be so cruel? what had he done so wrong for them to subject him to such a fate? fine! take away his friends! take away his family! but why did they have to take you too?
"please come back...."
things were only made worse because today was the day when he'd finally decided to ask you to spend the rest of your lives together.

lighter x gn!mechanic!reader, 1k wc lighter is down bad for reader. like. DOWN BAD, lots of cute banter, pining from both.

Whenever you visit Blazewood, the Sons of Calydon mark it as a significant day in their metaphorical calender.
You’re their precious mechanic, the one who ensures all of their bikes and engines are running smooth for any operations (read: trouble) they get themselves into. Having been long-term friends with Caesar, you make the effort of travelling from Sixth Street to the outskirts of New Eridu every few weeks. Granted, for how many times you’ve travelled between the two places, you’ve grown rather close to the tight-knit biker gang, so it's an exciting time for all.
However, the reason it’s marked down is because they know it’s a special occasion where they can all tease a certain, aloof boxer a bit more than usual.
“Y/n!” Burnice’s voice cuts through the bustling atmosphere of Cheesetopia, capturing everyone’s attention as you walk through the door of the diner.
They all wave you over the booth they sat in, Burnice and Luci shuffling over so you can sit down with them. You don’t see the way Caesar nudges Lighter as you settle down opposite him.
“How was your trip?” Caesar asks.
“Good, a little tired though,” your yawn is perfectly timed. “My limbs still feel stiff.”
“Oh no! Do you need a little rest?”
“No need, I wanna get started working as soon as possible, I'm itching to tinker some engines."
The dark-haired across from you chuckles, adjusting his sunglasses to sit higher on his nose bridge. “There’s the Y/n we all know. If you need a little help, let me know, I’m happy to lend a hand.”
The group giggles between themselves.
“Thanks, Lighter!”
The giggles intensify when Lighter’s ears flush red at the tips.
This is why your visits are a marked occurrence: because the rare blush and nervous appearance that overtakes his normally cool and collected character is incredibly entertaining, and watching him bumbling about around you is a hard opportunity to come by. All Lighter can do is admit defeat and be susceptible to all the teasing that’s sent his way, because he might as well accept it.
He’ll turn a blind eye to the blonde heads popping around the garage every so often as he helps you out in the garage as long as it means they leave the both of you alone. He’ll ignore the giggles of the girls as they listen in on the quiet conversation exchanged between you both in the dim lighting of the dreary space.
“Any biker gang fights happen recently?” You ask whilst observing the rear wheel.
“Nah,” Lighter grunts, “just a few challenges here and there.”
You extend your hand out to him. “Spanner, please.” He places the tool comfortably in your hands and you resume working. “A few challenges? Did you win?”
“‘course. Wouldn’t be a good champion if I lost.”
“Sounds easy in theory,” you murmur, peeking around the bike. “I bet you don’t even know the names of the gangs you won against.”
His silence is the only answer you need and you sneak a smug glance at him. You look away before you could notice the red blush creeping up his neck. “So what if I don’t? I won against them, ain’t that all that matters?”
“Sure. Guess your memory gets knocked out of you after a couple fights.” You giggle at your own joke.
“C'mon, quit teasin’ me.”
“Sorry, just can’t help it when it took you almost five months to remember my name.” It’s light-hearted, he can hear the smile in your voice.
“Gosh, you just don’t know how to let things go,” he counters, a smile of his own developing.
“Nah, it’s just fun to tease you.” Then, you stand up with a grunt, looking at your handiwork closely one last time before making your way to your workbench. “Besides, it’s not everyday I get to interact with a cool guy like you.”
Lighter’s heart skips a beat in his chest before jumping against his ribcage. “You think I’m cool?”
“Doesn’t everyone?” You ask. “You’re the cool guy who cares about everyone, and that’s a good thing. I like that about you.”
Oh, you’re gonna kill him. He’s not gonna make it out of the garage if you continue this onslaught of compliments. He doesn’t really want you to stop either, wants you to say something that really shows how you feel about him, like how you think he’s handsome, or that he’s admirable, or better yet, that you like him as well.
‘I like that about you’, ‘I like … you’, yeah. That’s also good enough for now.
Instead, you fall silent as you rearrange all your tools, locking the box that cuts through the tense atmosphere with a ‘click’.
“Well, I’m beat,” you huff, stretching your arms over your head, “my back hurts and I’m hungry.”
“You’ve been working real hard, let me treat you to dinner.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
A few minutes later, you end up at the Fuel Truck, enjoying some food together and continuing your conversation in the cool, breezy night of Blazewood. It’s easy being with you, effortless, doesn’t really burn through his energy like some other social interactions do, and Lighter can’t help but feel like this is how it’s meant to be. Sharing stories, talking about the important and mundane alike, he doesn’t know when you became more than the cute mechanic Caesar was good friends with, but he’s glad he finally got your name down on the sixth time of trying.
He tucks a strand of stray hair away from your face before you can get it in your mouth, and the grin you give him almost paralyses him.
Plates are emptied, drinks finished, and dessert is done, but you’re still talking into the late of the night, until the employees need to wipe down the bar and call it a day. All good things come to an end, and Lighter wishes you could stay with the Sons of Calydon for longer than just a few days, but you have your own business in Sixth Street, so he monopolises your time whenever he can.
Which is how he ends up walking you to your motel, letting the long day draw to a close.
“Thank you for dinner, Lighter, today was fun.”
He chuckles, the sound deep and full. “No problem, it’s my pleasure.”
“Come back tomorrow, yeah? Swing by the garage anytime you want.”
“Anytime?” The biker rubs his chin. “Careful with your generosity, I might end up annoying you.”
“I doubt it.”
“And if I overstay my welcome?”
“Then apologise by keeping me company.”
You shoot him a wink before going up the stairs of the motel, quickly disappearing from his sight as he laughs to no one in particular. He lightly punches his chest, as if trying to tell his hammering heart to calm down.
Yeah. You really are trying to kill him.

please please write about theodore nott getting caught by the reader touching himself to her. then absolutely wrenching her in the his dorm. overtimulation. squirting. round after round.
This one was a lot longer than I originally planned, oops, lol.
Just One More
Theodore Nott x F!Reader
Warnings: mention of masturbation, oral(female receiving), squirting, overstimulation, forced orgasms, unprotected sex, creampie
18+ Minors DNI

You and Theodore had gotten assigned for a project together for potions and were working on it in his dorm. You had called it for the day, exhausted and ready to rest after the long school day and hours working on this project with Theo.
You weren’t extremely close with the boy, but that didn’t stop his attempts to flirt with you and joke around with you whenever he did see you. And you had to admit, you may have developed a small crush on him. He was hot and flirted with you, what else could you say?
You said ‘goodbye’ and left his dorm, heading to your own. You noticed once you got there that you had left your textbook in his dorm and figured you’d just grab it real quick.
But as you were about to knock on his door, you could hear faint noises inside. After a second of listening, you realized the noises were moans. Did he have a girl over? It was just his moans you could hear so probably not.
“Oh, (Y/N), cara mia. Fuck.” You heard coming from the other side of the door.
‘(Y/N)’ Was he really moaning your name? Holy shit.
Before you even realized it, you were knocking on the door. You could hear a quiet cuss escape his lips and some shuffling with a louder ‘Hold on’ coming from him. After a moment, the door opened, and Theo leaned against the door frame before his eyes widened when he saw it was you, quickly turning his expression into a calm one with a flirty smirk.
“Cara mia. What are you doing here? Didn’t get enough of me?” He asked as he looked you over.
“Uh, I forgot my textbook. Though, it seems like you were the one who didn’t get enough of me.” You said, giving him a sweet, innocent smile.
His smirk fell. “What are you talking about?” He shifted slightly, clearly nervous now.
“I kinda heard you. You moaned my name. I was only gone for a few minutes, it seems like you barely waited after I left to, uh, you know.” You said, tilting your head.
“How long were you outside my door, bella?” He asked.
“Long enough.” You shrugged.
He looked at you for a few seconds, like he was pondering his next move before pulling you into the room and closing the door behind you.
“Seems to me like you were enjoying listening in.” He said as he backed you up to the bed.
“Well, it was more like I was surprised, especially once I heard my name.” Your legs hit the bed and you fell on it.
“So you didn’t like it?” He leaned down, putting his arms on either side of you to trap you on the bed.
“I didn’t say that.”
“If you wanted, I could show you more of those sounds now.” He lowered his head to your ear as he spoke quietly. “I could show you what I was thinking about doing to you that was making me moan like that.”
“Very tempting.” You said back just as quietly as him. “How should we start?”
“How about we start by getting these clothes off?” He said as he leaned back and helped you out of your clothes, a bit quickly and desperately. “Fucking hell, principessa. You’re fucking gorgeous.” He said before leaning back down to pepper kisses along your neck, trailing up before connecting your lips. The kiss was heated and hasty, like he couldn’t get enough. He nestled between your legs, his hands roaming along your skin, feeling everywhere. One hand traveled lower until he made it to your folds, groaning into the kiss when he felt how wet you were. He teased your entrance, enjoying the whine from your throat as he started pushing two fingers in you, swallowing your moans once he started thrusting them in and out of you.
He parted from your lips and went back to your neck, kissing and licking his way down to your chest before giving your nipples some attention. Your moans were loud now that you weren’t being muffled by his lips, your back arching into his mouth as he licked and sucked at one of your nipples before giving the other the same attention.
“Fuck, Theo!” You moaned. Your hands were gripping at the sheets, the neat fabric getting wrinkled in your grasp.
Theo moaned against your nipple in response, flicking his eyes up to your face to watch your reaction. He used his thumb to find your clit, rubbing circles on it as your eyes rolled back from the pleasure. It didn’t take much before your orgasm washed over you, making you cry out his name and have your body trembling.
He moved his body to bring his mouth onto your clit, his fingers never stopping inside you. The pleasure was starting to get overwhelming as you wrapped your fingers in his hair, cries and gasps leaving your mouth as he licked and sucked at your clit.
“Theo, please! ‘S Too much!” You whined, trying to pull away from him. His free hand stopped you, wrapping around your hips to keep you in place. “Shit! Oh my fuck!” You cried out from the overstimulation, the pleasure on the brink of being pain.
He wasn’t stopping, forcing another orgasm out of you as you cried and clawed at his scalp, which only made him hiss. He kept going, though. Any hopes of him slowing down or stopping were gone, all you could do was plead and cry. He worked you to another orgasm, this one nearly making you black out as it hit you.
“Fucking hell, cara mia. That was perfect. I need you to do that again for me.” He said and you raised your head to look at him, noticing the drenched sheets beneath you.
“What?” You asked, still dazed.
“I made you squirt. And you’re gonna do that again for me.” He smiled before leaning back down to lick at your clit again.
You whimpered and clung to his hair again, body fighting on if it wanted more or less from him. His arm around you wouldn’t let you decide anyways since it kept you from squirming further or closer to him. He easily brought you to another orgasm like he already knew your body. He helped you through it, not even minding that you soaked him again in your cum.
He finally let you go, standing up to push down his pants and chuck off his shirt before settling back between your legs, bringing them over his shoulders as he started easing his cock into you. You and him moaned together as he bottomed out, giving you a moment to adjust before beginning to thrust. “You take me so well, cara mia. Holy shit. You feel better than I ever imagined.”
Your mind was already blank from all the previous orgasms, no way you could respond other than with the moans and whimpers that left your mouth from how sensitive you were.
“Just one more for me, bella. Cum on my cock for me and we’ll be done. I just need it. I need to feel it.” He rambled, his hips pounding into yours, desperately trying to get both of you to cum.
With how sensitive you were, your orgasm came quickly, clenching his cock and sobbing. He praised you, wiping your tears as he helped ride out your orgasm.
“Sorry, principessa. Just one more. Please, just one more. I promise that’s it.” He said as he kept slamming into you, overworking your cunt.
“I can’t-I can’t, Theo! I can’t!” You cried.
“Just one more. I promise. Just give me one more. Fuck, you felt so good cumming around me, I just need to feel it one more time.” He said, gently kissing your leg on his shoulder.
He forced you into another orgasm before he finally came, filling your pussy with his cum.
“It’s okay, cara mia. We’re all done. You did so good for me.” He rested your legs on the bed and cupped your face, pressing soft kisses on your face.

˗ˏˋ Entry : 050 - Lover! HSR Men x Fem! Reader: Can't sleep at night.... ♡ ˎˊ˗
꒰ Caelus, Aventurine, Sunday, Dan Heng ꒱
ₓ˚. ୭ ˚○◦˚ ℂ𝕒𝕖𝕝𝕦𝕤 ˚◦○˚ ୧ .˚ₓ

"Alright, who is begging to be whooped by my bat—" Caelus announces, his voice full of conviction as he held his bat until his gaze lowered down to see your sorry little state clutching a miniature plushie of him you got from the trailblaze stern's merchandise. "O-oh, babe!"
He immediately panics and throws away the bat he was ready to swing at a moment's notice.
"I uhm... Heh!" He scratches the back of his head before taking your hand. "What's wrong? It's really late now, did you have a nightmare?"
"No... Not really" You slump, entirely upset. "I watched a sad movie and now I can't sleep."
"... Ah, that old film Mr. Yang recommended?" Caelus hums thoughtfully, "Wanna hit the hay with me then? My new room is really big and I got new pillows!"
"Please" You nod sheepishly as your boyfriend guides you inside the upturned storeroom he spent days decorating and renovating.
It was a sight to behold knowing how empty and barren the place was until the astral express team decided to give him the space. Now Caelus had a whole paradise to himself. A kitchen, his own bathroom, a weapon station, and even his massive gaming area that he spent hours on end when the crew isn't off doing training or he's joining March on whatever stupidity to stress Dan Heng and Sunday with since the former head of the oak family has decided to hitchhike for a little while.
"Wanna talk about the movie?" Caelus asks as he kisses your plump cheek so you would look at him. "Or is it too sad?"
You shook your head, not wanting to recall the film that made you look at the wall and contemplate life. Mr. Yang is truly cruel for suggesting such a sad movie.
"Hm..." He ponders, trying to recall the contents of the book he asked from Dan Heng about cheering up your girlfriend who is clearly upset.
Now that he thinks about it, the contents of that book is too cringey and will probably not help you at all.
"Anything you want me to do?" He gently ruffles the side of your head.
"Sunday told me he taught you some voice thingies" You say, your eyes glimmering as you look up at his golden orbs.
"Well, uhm... Err... About that" A dust of pink tinges on his fair cheeks.
He wanted to surprise you with a love song on your anniversary so he secretly started asking voice lessons from him, but maybe he should have told the halovian man that it's for a surprise.
"You will, right?... Right?" You nod expectantly, making Caelus feel all the more helpless as he can't resist his lover.
"Alright, alright" He nods as he clears his throat.
"You can do it, Caelus. Sunday said your voice is really good, just relax" He tells himself.
He needed a bit more time as he developed the courage, but eventually he started humming. He remembered Sunday's lessons well after all, he should be fine.
Caelus kept humming for a while until he noticed you completely passed out in his arms and nuzzling his chest. He silently screamed a victorious howl, crying of joy and thanking Sunday for joining the astral express and for the free singing lessons.
Now he knows the perfect way of coaxing you to sleep without using unconventional methods. The strict guidance he underwent from Sunday is all not in vain.
After all, he has his cute girlfriend snuggled up against him with a miniature plushie version of himself in her arms. What more can he ask for?
So gently, he squeezed you in his arms while kissing your cheek.
"Goodnight, baby. I hope you dream pleasant dreams"
ₓ˚. ୭ ˚○◦˚ 𝔸𝕧𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕦𝕣𝕚𝕟𝕖 ˚◦○˚ ୧ .˚ₓ

Aventurine has just finished working on his remaining paperworks for the evening until there was a knock on his office, he lazily called out to come in and perked up at the sight if your wearing the pajamas he bought for you the other day.
"Ah, look at you, darling. I knew the limited edition one made of fine silk suits your cute figure, come come. I want to admire you more." Aventurine urges you to come over.
And once you were near enough, he perched you on his lap and peppered your pretty face with kisses.
"It's bedtime now, though, why are you still awake, hm?" He inquires as he strokes the top of your head.
"Can't sleep..." You complain softly as Aventurine presses his lips on your forehead.
"Mm, is it because you need me by your ride to sleep?" He teases.
"Mhm..." You nod sheepishly, feeling childish for such a demand.
"Ah, how cute!" Aventurine muses, giving you another plethora of kisses. "I would love to join you in bed, but as you can see, the ipc is working me to the bone again and I have just returned from break"
He gestures to the pikes of paperwork still on his desk and open documents on the screen.
"Can I stay here then?" You ask, playing with his necktie. "I'll be good, I promise"
"Whatever makes your pretty little head happy, dearest" The signonian man hums, pulling your head to the crook of his neck as a way to coax you into sleeping.
The room soon falls into silence, with the exception of Aventurine's writing and keyboard typings. A sweet aroma of wood and citrus permeates through his office, making the whole place even more cozier than it already is.
And soon, you would find yourself lost in dreamland in your beloved's arms.
It took him a while to notice, but Aventurine soon realizes you're completely asleep. He smiles gently, his heterochromatic eyes gazing so lovingly at your face.
He never really thought he would be holding you like this again given all the trouble he went through in penacony. Not to mention, he was dead set on disappearing there until a knight of beauty rescued him from hell.
Aventurine is not taking another chance at being so reckless again knowing that someone as precious as you is waiting for him at home. And how could he leave you when you're this adorable and clingy? He would rather be humiliated than ever make you upset again.
So once again, he kisses your forehead— A lingering one this time as a way to bless you in your sleep.
ₓ˚. ୭ ˚○◦˚ 𝕊𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕒𝕪 ˚◦○˚ ୧ .˚ₓ

Sunday's days are finally peaceful and stress-free ever since he became a runaway fugitive in Penacony. Who knew staying in the astral express can bless him with such clarity and tranquility? He's never had his guard down like this when he was the head of the oak family. He always presented himself as the most perfect person as he can be.
But now, he is dressed in an outfit that is asymmetrical. He lives in a space where there is a mess here and there that he cannot help but tidy up as a way to help pompom. It's quite awkward to reside in the train that bodyslammed him multiple times when he was at the peak of insanity. But this will do. Yes. This will do. Sunday is, after all, still adjusting to the life in the astral express, the astral express that you are also part of.
"Sunny?..." You call out to him as he arranges some books that he borrowed from Dan Heng as a way to pass the time.
"Dearest." The halovian smiles lovingly, putting down the books he is holding and gesturing you to his bed so he can sit you down. "My love, if you sleep this late then you will he moody in the morning again"
He cups your cheek gently, his wings fluttering softly as he touches your skin.
"I just can't sleep... I was scared you're still missing" You murmur, making his heart ache.
"I told you, it's alright now. I'm hitchhiking here" He reassures you before tucking you in his sheets. "I promised you that I will protect you as I give my services to the astral express, you needn't be so distressed."
He then ponders for a while, "Shall I hum you a tune then? My sister used to be like you when she has trouble resting. While I would normally suggest that we listen to her albums, it seems that my love needs 'Sunny'— More right now."
It was awkward to use that nickname, but he would make an exception for his beloved.
"Mhm..." You nod, intertwining your fingers together.
Sunday started to hum a lullaby he used to coax Robin with when they were little. A soft, steady and melancholic lullaby his mother taught him when he was younger. It was one of the few things he cherishes from her. Though her departure is abrupt and sudden, Sunday chooses to remember all the joyous memories he has given him and his baby sister.
And part of that way is singing you the lullaby she would sing. It never fails to soothe you after all.
See?
Your already breathing so slowly. Your chest would rise and fall in a steady manner and he would eventually stop.
"There we go, my little bird" Sunday cooes, kissing your forehead. "Don't worry about me anymore. I will stay by your side as long as you permit me to. I want to see the stars with you a bit longer, so rest well."
ₓ˚. ୭ ˚○◦˚ 𝔻𝕒𝕟 ℍ𝕖𝕟𝕘 ˚◦○˚ ୧ .˚ₓ

"Yes?..." Dan Heng answers the door and sees you fidgeting with your little fingers.
"Hi..." You awkwardly greet him.
"..." The vidyadhara steps aside, a silent way of inviting you in since he knew what is going on.
"Am I bothering you?" You ask, glancing at the paperwork on his desk scattered around.
"No, I was finished anyway" Dan Heng shakes his head, "Ignore the papers. I was just reviewing some stuff regarding our recent expenses,"
His blue eyes then glance down at you who is holding a teddy bear he gave you as a present on your birthday. The sight softens his heart.
He lifted his blanket, tipping his head over to it so you can snuggle in.
Once you are settled, Dan Heng tucks you in before climbing in himself.
"Aren't you uncomfortable with my bed?" He inquires, softly patting your hip to coax you into sleep. "I don't have a comfortable mattress like March and Caelus."
"But yours is the warmest" You shake your head.
"Is that so?" He smiles softly, "Shall I tell you a bedtime story the elders tell the children then?"
"Stories?" You perk up at the suggestion.
The stories from the xianzhou loufu are always fascinating and Dan Heng had a talent for story-telling. Maybe it's because of the fact that he loves reading books that he has a knack for it.
He starts telling you the folklore that he finds fascinating. His voice is low but not too quiet, he expresses the right emotions as needed and fluctuates his voice to immerse you further in the story.
It never fails to amuse Dan Heng on the precious way your eyes would light up at the climax of the story and when he tells you the twists.
You are always so amazed by the folk lore he tells like a little girl.
By the end of the story, you are ironically more exhausted than he is as you struggle to keep your eyes open.
"What a fun and sad story" You yawn, "Are stories from the xianzhou loufu always full of tragedy?"
"Not really, I just chose this story in particular for tonight" He kisses your forehead as a way to apologize, "I'll tell you a happier one next time then, forgive me for this one."
"Nuh-uh... It's okay" You shake your head as your eyes finally close. "I like Dan Heng's stories..."
And just like that, you are asleep in the vidyadhara's arms— Warming his heart all the more at the sight of you so snuggled up on him.
Truth be told, Dan Heng never thought there would come a day wherein he would ever have a lover. He's always busy attending to the data bank and taking care of March and Caelus to spare them from their stupidity. There are times where he is just so over them and lets them be stupid though just so they can have a taste of their medicine.
But with you? He would never do that.
Dan Heng will always keep you out of danger. He wont necessarily direct you to what not to do or what to— But he will be by your side and ready to extend a guiding hand should you actually need him.
Every boyfriend wants to cherish his dearest darling.
And Dan Heng is no exception to that.
Telling you bedtime stories is just one of the few duties he enjoys doing as your lover and he silently hopes that you keep coming to him to hear all about his culture that he adores.
He presses his lips on yours, applying a chaste kiss before muttering in his native tongue— A silent oath that vidyadharas have to their fated ones. An oath that he binds himself to you. To his beloved. To the one who owns his heart.

Teething
dbf!Joel Miller x f!Reader
Joel was crowned as The Trusted Adult to accompany you to your wisdom teeth extraction appointment. Chaos ensued.
Tags: no outbreak, age gap, most likely exaggerated effects of sedation, sexual themes
Word count: 3.1k
The skies were painted with shades of copper and lilac when you arrived home. A familiar pickup truck was parked in the driveway next to your dad’s mud-caked F-150, and you slipped your way between the space between the two to get to the backyard through the narrow passage on the right side of your house, sticking twigs of overgrown shrub brushing against your arm. Your dad hated garden work, and it was not like you hated to prune and trim the green galore by yourself—you just hadn't found the time.
Laughter bounced against the pillars supporting rusting canopy adorned with vines and wildflowers, echoing around the tiny outdoor dining area. Around the table were three men you could discern blindfolded: your dad, and his friends, Joel and Tommy. The three looked pretty scruffy, which was not unusual. On the table were cans of beer that you just knew would leave more water stain on the undone finishing of the wood.
Tommy said something about a boat, and your dad and Joel burst out laughing again like they just heard the funniest joke in the world, and you could swear you could feel the ground vibrated underneath your shoes. Your dad said something then, about sinking and anchor, maybe, and Tommy smacked his can on the table as the three of them erupted into another laughing fit. They didn't register the new addition of their little late-afternoon get-together until you put both hands on your dad’s shoulders, kissing the top of his head. He smelled like sawdust and smoke.
“What’s so funny?” you grin.
“Sweetheart!” your dad jolted, slightly twisting his torso to see you. “We were just chatting about fishing. How was today?”
“Hi Joel, hi Tommy," you smiled at the brothers, greeted with a polite nod from Joel and a cheerful 'hey' from Tommy. “today was okay-ish.” you patted your dad's shoulders once more before letting go and starting to make your way towards the backdoor, leaving the men to their football talk and fishing jokes alone. “I'm gonna take a shower. Have fun, guys.”
"Aw, shoot—almost forgot!" your dad said, clapping his hands once. "Sweetheart, I’m real sorry, but I don’t think I can take you to the dentist Thursday. They need me over in Georgetown to look over somethin’—"
“Aw, Daaad,” you groaned, although your face showed nothing akin to annoyance, just sorry for him. You knew how much your dad overlooked his back pain, especially for work, and these frequent trips requiring a lot of driving didn't help. “I’ll see if my friend can take me, okay?”
These friends of yours... you’d have a bigger chance of losing your teeth in a car crash before you could even step into the dentist's office. You shook the thought off. Let's think about that later.
“What’s goin’ on?” Tommy asked, brow scrunched. “You alright?”
“I’m getting my wisdom teeth removed,” you pointed at your cheek, the approximate area where your upper right molar was growing sideways. “One popped out and it’s growing weirdly, so I got an x-ray. Turned out all four of them are developing in such shitty angles, so, they’re taking 'em all.”
“All at once?!” Tommy gasped, to which you nodded as you purse your lips.
“More cost-effective, or whatever.”
“Ouch. That sucks.”
“I’ll take her,” all eyes went to the source of the voice: Joel. He was staring directly at your dad. “I’m free Thursday.”
Your dad blinked, a little surprised. “Shoot, Joel, that’s real kind of you, but you don’t gotta do that. I mean it—I appreciate it, more than you know, but I don’t wanna put you out.”
Joel shrugged slightly, tone steady. “Ain’t no trouble. Got the day open, figured I could help.”
You practically bounced in place, cutting in before your dad could say anything else. “Yes! Please, Dad, can he? Joel’s like… perfect for this. Besides, you know my friends, we'd crash into something and you'd have to pay for the damage."
Your dad chuckled, shaking his head. “Well, I won't stand in the way. Joel, you sure about this?"
Joel was only halfway to a nod when you shouted, “Really?”, prancing your way towards his seat and kissed his cheek. “Thank you, Joel!”
The man raised his eyebrows and cleared his throat while Tommy laughed. Your dad shook his head slowly at your endearing antics, his eyes meeting Joel’s as they silently said ‘Thank you, and sorry’.
The next time Joel’s gray Ranger pulled up in front of your house, you had been waiting on the porch with a smile worthy enough to be a toothpaste ad.
.
The fog in your head started to clear just enough to let you notice the figure sitting by your side. Joel’s broad shoulders took up half the room—or at least it felt that way in your dazed state. His arms were crossed, and his brows furrowed as he watched you with what looked like mild concern. You blinked a few times, your vision wobbling like you were looking through a fishbowl. You couldn’t really register where you were or how you ended up here yet.
“Hey,” he straightened his posture up the second he realized you were awake.
“Whoa,” you slurred, pointing a wobbly finger at him. “You look good.”
Because he did. That was the first thing you noticed about him. You couldn’t remember if it was exactly true, but a voice in your head told you that Joel always looked good. You believed it. And he did right now, with clothes all ironed, beard trimmed, hair combed. Joel wouldn’t admit it, but he’d even put some styling powder on his hair today.
His lips twitched, and he scratched at his beard, unsure of the appropriate response to give. “Uh, thanks. How are you feeling?”
You ignored the question. “Does my dad know you’re here?”
“Yeah,” he said slowly, leaning closer. “He was there when I said I’d take you here, remember?”
“No.” You deadpanned, voice thick and blunt. Your tongue scraped against your gum, and it touched some soft, fibery, wet cotton balls. You almost gagged.
Joel sighed. “Alright. Uh, pain anywhere? Are you comfortable?”
You tilted your head, as if trying to access some hidden inner truth. Then, with startling conviction, you announced, “Sweaty.”
He quickly raised from his seat, reaching for a handkerchief in his pocket to wipe your forehead with when you suddenly choked into tears. You could barely get the words out through the swollen jaw, numb tongue, and spiky throat. “I miss my daddy…”
You felt like the saddest child in the world. You didn’t know where your dad was, but most importantly, your brain wasn’t able to assess where he might be. But he wasn’t here. And that alone was enough to send you spiraling into agony.
Joel looked around awkwardly, clearly out of his depth. “Sweetie,” he said, reaching out to pat your cheek gently. “I’m here.”
You blinked up at him with wide, glassy eyes, your bottom lip trembling. “Where is he? Did he sell me to you?”
“What?” if only you were sober enough to see the expression on his face.
Tears continued to pool in your eyes, spilling down your cheeks. “What am I supposed to do, being sold to a person like you?”
“Person like me—What’s that supposed to mean,” Joel withdrew, seemingly offended momentarily before he realized he was talking to a group of at most six brain cells, half of them blackout drunk.
“Hot,” you sniffled. “Hot like you.”
Joel freezed. His jaw worked soundlessly for a moment before he muttered, “O…kay. Uh, let’s call for a nurse, okay?” He stood up and looked toward the hallway.
“I don’t even know how to be a housewife!” you lamented, gesturing wildly toward a painting of sand dunes on the wall. “You’re going to dump me in the middle of a desert!”
“Honey,” Joel said, his voice strained but calm. “Nobody is dumping or selling anybody, okay? Just—wait here. I’m gonna go get a nurse. I’ll only be gone for, like, five seconds.”
You watched him disappear behind the wall, your lips quivering as you began counting on your fingers. “One… two… three… four… five…” You looked up at the hallway, waiting for Joel to come back as you realized how alone you were in the room. You didn’t want to be alone. The fluorescent light was hurting your eyes and the air smelled like a dentist’s office. You were in one, but you didn’t really register that. Panic set in like a tidal wave. “Joel?”
“Joel! JOEL!” You thrashed in the chair, trying to swing your legs over to touch the ground, ready to bolt after him like some kind of lovesick lunatic. It was hard, like you were learning controls for a video game for the first time, and your limbs didn’t move the way you wanted them to. Joel returned with a nurse moments after. She was holding a clipboard and if not for the mask hiding her expression, Joel would have seen that she was wearing a smile that looked dangerously close to a laugh.
“You’re back! I thought you were leaving me…” your voice cracked as you reached out toward Joel with snot running freely down your upper lip. “I’ll be a good wife from now on, Joel, I promise.”
“Oh,” the nurse said sweetly. “Sounds like someone’s still a little loopy.”
Joel ran a hand over his face, mortified. “Sorry about that.”
“It’s alright,” she smiled at him before checking on you. “Definitely not the worst I’ve witnessed. You’ll be okay, won’t you, sweetheart?”
You nodded.
She asked you to open your mouth, and you attempted to talk to Joel the entirety of it, moving your heavy tongue around, making barely coherent noises. At one point you reached for his hand and he took it.
“Hoew, wa ho hayhee hee hahee?” which would translate to ‘Joel, was our wedding in Bali?’, like Joel would’ve been able to decipher it. He just played along in hopes to shut you up.
“Yes, yes, of course.” he cupped your hand in his.
“Okay, now bite down with pressure, okay?” the nurse said softly after pulling the blood-soaked cotton balls out and replacing them with new ones. You did as she said. “That’s good. Thank you.”
“No, thank you.” you smiled at her. “You’re so nice.”
“And you’re so nice, too.” she said as she gathered her clipboard and metal tray. “We’re all clear here, you are free to go home. If you prefer to wait out until she’s not so disoriented anymore, please use our waiting room since we have to clean this one before the next patient.”
“Thank you.” Joel nodded politely at her.
“Any more questions you’d like to ask the doctor?”
“I think we’re all covered. Thank you for everything. Let’s go, sweetie.” he helped you stand up, and the second he let go your body leaned, craving to touch the floor. Both him and the nurse reached out to you, crashing their heads in the process.
“Ow!” she yelped.
“Sorry, sorry. I got her. I’m really sorry.” he slightly bowed down as he held you steady, one palm planted on your ribs just below your breasts.
“Sorry,” you parroted, utterly oblivious to what just happened.
“It’s alright,” she laughed lightheartedly as she reached down to fix your shoelaces. “There you go.”
“Thank you again. We’ll stay out of your hair now.”
.
After what felt like eighty years, Joel finally got you on the passenger seat. He could feel his lifespan shortened significantly, and his back hurt so much trying to crouch to your level as he guided you across the parking lot. He should’ve just carried you—would’ve been much quicker and better for everyone involved.
You touched the dashboard, feeling the texture underneath your fingers like it was the first time you got in a car. Joel closed the door next to you and scurried his way around the car hood to the driver’s side, sighing when he got in.
“Joel, what’s your favorite pie?” you asked as he leaned over to put your seatbelt on, hand fiddling with the belt when it got stuck and you instinctively ran your fingers through his hair.
“Pecan,” he muttered, body getting tense under your casual yet intimate touch.
“Oh, I had pecan pie at my house recently.” you withdrew your fingers as Joel straightened up and put his own seatbelt on. “We’re like, soulmates, or something.”
Joel started the car. “Yes, that was me. I brought the pie to your house.”
“Wow, you’re so kind.” you smiled, eyes tearing up, as if bringing you pie was the equivalent of saving all kittens in the world. Joel rolled his eyes and shifted the gear from neutral, and the two of you slowly moved out of the office parking lot to the road.
You cupped your own swelled cheeks, feeling the spherical cotton balls nested between your jaws. “I don’t like these, Joel.”
“Yeah? Wanna take them out? Do you think the bleeding has stopped?” his eyes ran between you and the road in front of him back and forth, getting ready to merge onto the highway.
“My mouth is so full,” you whined, and you fished one cotton ball out, all wet and slightly red, before rolling the window down and throwing it out. It bounced on the dry concrete behind you briefly before it got run over by another car.
“Hey, no littering! And keep your arm inside, my fucking god, d’ya wanna lose it?” Joel yelled, one arm leaving the steering wheel to pull your hand into the car and close the window back up, almost taking up the lane next to you. A semi-truck passed through and the driver honked their horn, deafening. You snarled at it while Joel mouthed a quiet ‘fuck’.
“I still got more inside,” you pointed at your open mouth, like Joel couldn’t tell from your slightly muffled voice still.
“I know, but either keep it in your mouth until we get home, or find some—I don’t know, plastic bag to keep it in, alright? Try the glove box.” he points at the compartment in front of you. You fiddled with the handle, and when it opened it revealed a little toolbox, a pocket knife, a folded map, and two dusty condoms from God knows when.
“Joel, what is this?” you pinched one out for Joel to see, voice thick with betrayal. “You’re cheating on me.”
Good fucking god. Joel snatched the thing out of your hand, shoving it back into the glove box before slamming it closed. He shouldn’t have been panicking like you were actually his bride and he’d been two-timing you after work, because you weren’t, and the only thing that had been in touch with his dick in the past six months was his fist. “I don’t know how it got there. It’s from a while ago.”
But the damage had been done. You covered your face with your hands, eventually took the remaining cotton balls out and let them go onto the floor mats. Joel winced.
“What should I do? Is my blowjob not good enough?”
Joel was the most uncomfortable he had ever been his whole life right now, and he once witnessed his friends’ parents hitting it crazy style with the same banana pudding that was served at dinner smeared everywhere when he was there for a sleepover, so that was saying a lot.
“You have never—what are you fuckin’ doing?!”
You had leaned over as much as your seatbelt allowed you to, fingers reaching to unbuckle his belt. “I’m gonna show you how good I c—”
Joel lost control of the steering wheel as he tried to shoo you away, but you latched your palm around his bulge like leech. He accidentally turned the truck too much to the left, switching lanes without warning, and abruptly hit the brakes for a split second when he thought he was going to crash into a Camaro, almost slamming you forward if not for the seatbelt. Three cars honked at the two of you as they passed, one was generous enough to give you the finger.
He pushed you back to your seat, both of you huffing and puffing. There was silence for about thirty seconds until Joel composed himself.
“What the fuck did they put you under, because I need some,” he muttered under his breath before speaking clearer. “Put your hands on the dashboard. Now,” he commanded, eyes flicking between you and the road.
“Why?” you mumbled, your fingers twitching like they might reach for Joel’s belt again.
“Because I said so,” Joel grunted, shifting in his seat to try to hide his hardening length, jaw tense as he kept one hand firmly on the wheel. “You wanna be a good wife, don’t you?”
You blinked slowly. Joel was right, you wanted to be a good wife.
“Yeah,” Joel continued, eyes narrowing slightly, still focused on the road. “Only good wives put their hands on the dashboard.”
“Really?” you laughed, the sound drifting lazily out of you. But you planted both palms on the dashboard anyway, sunlight pouring on the back of your hands, warming them up.
“Yeah—yeah,” he muttered. “Look it up.”
“I can’t, my hands are on the dashboard,” you frowned, chin pointing towards your splayed fingers.
Joel rolled his eyes, letting out an exasperated sigh. “You just have to believe me, then.”
You thought of it for a second before nodding. “Okay. I believe you.”
He glanced at you, eyebrows lifting. “You should. You’re my wife.”
Your head tilted, a lazy grin spreading across your face as you processed the words. You’re my wife. Somehow that was the most beautiful string of words you had ever heard. “Am I a good wife?”
“Sure. You got your hands on the dashboard. Guess that makes you a good wife,” Joel said. Your loopy grin was infectious despite his best efforts to stay stoic.
“I’m a good wife,” you repeated to yourself, beaming.
There was a beat of silence before you leaned slightly toward him, eyes bright, head swaying with the motion of the truck. “Are you a good husband?”
Joel’s grip on the steering wheel tightened for a split second, his gaze flicking to the side, then back to the road. “...I don’t know. Do you think I’m a good husband?”
“Yeah,” you said immediately, so sure of yourself as you gathered the evidence in your hazy brain. “You took me to the dentist. You got me pecan pie.”
Joel scoffed, his hands tightening on the wheel. “Driving and pies, guess that’s the key to a successful marriage.”
.
By dinner time you were already out of your groggy state, although the pain started to creep back in despite the painkillers that you just sat in the living room with a frozen pouch of CapriSun pressed against your cheek. Joel hadn’t said much but he did stay until your dad got home.
He had hoped you blacked out and didn’t remember anything from earlier. He wasn’t sure if he could live knowing you were able to remember that you were so eager to put your mouth on him, on top of you calling yourself his wife, on top of you casually admitting you found him hot.
And because he got hard in the car. He didn’t know if you saw it but for his own peace he would like to believe that you didn’t.
Joel was a little bit grateful that Tommy wasn’t there because he would never let this die.
He would never let this die himself.
When your dad set some burritos for Joel and applesauce for you on the counter, Joel was ready to go home and get drunk while pondering in the shower.
“You’re leaving already?” you licked the applesauce, tasting it innocently, and Joel had to remind himself that licking applesauce was not a sexually enticing act.
“Yeah, working early tomorrow. Get well soon.” he stood awkwardly as he pocketed his keys.
“Thanks a lot, man,” your dad got up to give Joel a hug with his back facing away from you, and you stared Joel dead in the eyes as you mouthed playfully: ‘Husband.’
His lips twitched. Seemed like he would never know peace ever again.
